Cudos to CBS News for continuing to chase this story… (CBS) Congressional investigators tell CBS News there’s evidence the U.S. Attorney’s office in Arizona sought to cover up a link between their controversial gunwalking operation known as “Fast and Furious” and the death of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.
Terry was murdered in Arizona near the US border last December. Two assault rifles ATF had allegedly allowed onto the street without interdiction were found at the scene. But the US Attorney’s office working both the Terry murder and the “Fast and Furious” operation did not immediately disclose the two had any link. Two Republicans investigating the scandal, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) say there’s evidence that officials at ATF and the US Attorney’s office sought to hide the connection. (more…)
(Investors Business Daily) Scandal: A former ATF special agent tells Congress a National Security Council staffer was informed about Operation Fast and Furious before guns allowed into Mexico wound up at the murder scene of a U.S. agent.
The latest evidence that both the White House and attorney general knew and approved of Project Gunrunner and its deadly offshoot, Operation Fast and Furious, came this week in the testimony of William Newell, ATF special agent in charge of the Phoenix office, before Rep. (CBS News) At a lengthy hearing on ATF’s controversial gunwalking operation today, a key ATF manager told Congress he discussed the case with a White House National Security staffer as early as September 2010. The communications were between ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix office, Bill Newell, and White House National Security Director for North America Kevin
O’Reilly. Newell said the two are longtime friends. The content of what Newell shared with O’Reilly is unclear and wasn’t fully explored at the hearing. (more…)

Next Round Of Gunwalker Hearings Announced – The House Oversight Committee has announced that the next round of hearings on Operation Fast and Furious (aka Project Gunwalker) will be held Tuesday July 26th at 10am (the announcement is below). Looking at the witness list, this one should be very interesting. Darren Gil, former ATF Attache to Mexico, was forced into retirement when he objected to the project. (The Hill) — Republican lawmakers have requested correspondence records, including emails and handwritten notes, from a dozen senior Justice Department officials who may have been involved in a controversial gun-tracking operation.
The Hill has obtained a letter sent from Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and Rep. Darrell Issa (Calif.) to Attorney General Eric Holder this week in which they ask for communication records from 12 senior officials with the Department of Justice (DOJ), including James Cole, the recently confirmed Deputy Attorney General. There has been a rapid uptick in information since Ken Melson appeared in front of Issa’s congressional investigative committee. Revelations include the depth of conspiracy within the DOJ and the attachment by the FBI. Also, we discovered the funding stemmed from Obama’s stimulus bill, and in Florida there was another very similar project taking place with guns headed toward Honduras. The entire tentacle ridden case of corruption appears to be gaining traction toward being exposed. However, there is also a great deal of questioning about why this entire program would be taking place to begin with. (more…)
