BREAKING UPDATE:  Jewish Week and Rabbi Hammerman Issue Joint Apology.

(YidWithLid)…The Jewish Week apologizes  – I just received this from the Jewish Week…

We apologize for posting an Opinion column on Dec. 14 by Rabbi Joshua Hammerman entitled “My Problem With Tim Tebow,” the Denver Broncos quarterback who is an Evangelical Christian. The column, in fact, violated our own standards calling for civility in posting comments on our website. The policy statement notes that “name calling in any form will not be tolerated, and comments that denigrate any religion or Jewish religious stream will always be rejected.”

The column was removed from our website later that day.

Rabbi Hammerman is a respected spiritual leader and longtime Jewish Week columnist whose writing over the years has been exemplary. This column, however, was more inciting than insightful, and we erred in posting it, which we deeply regret.  

Repentance and forgiveness are cornerstones of all major faiths, as is the recognition that we all make mistakes. We trust that the sincerity of our remorse, as expressed by the rabbi as well, will be taken into account by those whom we offended.

(YidWithLid)…I just got off the Phone With Jewish Week Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Gary Rosenblatt he confirmed that the post has been taken down and an official statement will be out soon. When I tried to press him asking whether he took it down because he disagreed with the content he pushed back and said “Rather than putting words in my mouth, why don’t you wait for the statement.”   (more…)

(ForeignPolicy.com)…In yet another reminder that the phrase “witch hunts” isn’t only used figuratively these days, the Saudi Interior Ministry announced on Monday that it had beheaded a woman named Amina bint Abdul Halim bin Salem Nasser for practicing “witchcraft and sorcery.” The London-based al-Hayat newspaper, citing the chief of the religious police who arrested the woman after a report from a female investigator, claims Nasser was tricking people into paying $800 per session to have their illnesses cured.

‘Tebowing’ becomes officially recognized as a word

It appears “Tebowing” is here to stay.

(USAToday)…The Global Language Monitor website says it acknowledges that the word Tebowing — the act of taking a knee in prayer during an athletic contest — is now part of the English language.

In today’s online world, that’s practically the equivalent of gaining acceptance to Webster’s Dictionary.

A press release from the website says the quick acceptance and use of Tebowing “has seldom been equaled, mirroring, for example, the rate of adoption of the word Obamamania in early 2008.”

Tim Tebow got the word going on Oct. 23, when famously he took a knee after his Denver Broncos completed a dramatic comeback victory against Miami in overtime.
