Do I really need to tell the names of the two Admirals being portrayed in this?
Of course I do! Though this was one of the most consequential periods in US history, it is stuff that simply is not taught. For all his faults FDR knew who to tap to lead the US military in war when the chips were down.  

The bald guy is Admiral Ernest King. He had been made Commander of the US fleet just the day before (Dec 30th, 1941) and summoned Admiral Chester Nimitz to give him Command of the Pacific fleet as directed by FDR.

Myles Standish
(c. 1584-1656)

Plymouth Colony leader, dies of strangury – caused by kidney stones or bladder cancer – at 72

Biography: Myles Standish was a military officer and early settler of Plymouth Colony. He played a key role in the defense and administration of the colony during its formative years.

Standish’s early life remains largely unknown. He served as a soldier in the Netherlands before the Pilgrims hired him as their military advisor. In 1620, Standish joined the Mayflower voyage to America and signed the Mayflower Compact.

Upon arrival in the New World, Standish led expeditions to explore the area and establish relations with Native Americans. He organized the defense of Plymouth Colony and conducted raids against perceived threats.

His aggressive tactics sometimes drew criticism, however, including from Pastor John Robinson.Standish’s most famous military action was the Wessagusset incident in 1623. He led a small group to confront Native American leaders, resulting in a violent confrontation.

As Plymouth Colony grew, Standish settled in Duxbury and took on administrative roles. He participated in land distribution and served as treasurer. Standish also engaged in trade and helped establish new settlements in the region.

Standish married twice and had seven children. He died in 1656 from a kidney stone condition. His legacy lives on through monuments, place names, and cultural references, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Courtship of Miles Standish” (1858).

When the crew of the Artemis II mission transmitted photographs of the Earth from space, everyone could see our smallness. Astronaut Christina Koch put it this way: “What struck me wasn’t necessarily just Earth; it was all the blackness around it. Earth was just this lifeboat, hanging undisturbedly in the universe.” 
Job, in our first reading, made a similar discovery. He had lost his wealth, his family, and his health. His misfortune seemed an unjust punishment. His friends tried to convince him that he was guilty of some grave sin, but he protested that he was innocent. Then, in the midst of Job’s pain and confusion, the Lord questioned him: “Where were you when I founded the earth?” (Job 38:4). And so began Job’s epiphany about God’s greatness and his smallness. In the end, he bowed humbly before the Lord and admitted, “I have dealt with great things that I do not understand” (42:3). 
We, too, might need to let God expand our view of him. We can forget that our loving Father is also the all-powerful Creator, the source of all life, the judge of every living thing, the Lord who rules all of history. We live in a world that tells us to live for ourselves: to prioritize what we need to do, what we deserve, and how we can better ourselves. The demands of life can keep our attention fixed on our immediate needs and leave little room for God. Or perhaps, like Job, sadness and loss have tempted us to lose hope in the Lord. It’s no wonder that we can lose sight of him at times!
But Job’s story reminds us of what an encounter with God is like and how it can change us. The same can happen to you! Follow Job’s lead today: quiet yourself in prayer and ponder who God is. How can you be all-powerful, perfect, completely just, and merciful at the same time? Ask the Holy Spirit to open your “spiritual eyes.” Let him bring these words to life for you, so that they fill your heart with love and awe.

COMMENTARY FOR PSALMS 23

Confidence in God’s grace and care.

– “The Lord is my shepherd.” In these words, the believer is taught to express his satisfaction in the care of the great Pastor of the universe, the Redeemer and Preserver of men. With joy he reflects that he has a shepherd, and that shepherd is Jehovah. A flock of sheep, gentle and harmless, feeding in verdant pastures, under the care of a skilful, watchful, and tender shepherd, forms an emblem of believers brought back to the Shepherd of their souls. The greatest abundance is but a dry pasture to a wicked man, who relishes in it only what pleases the senses; but to a godly man, who by faith tastes the goodness of God in all his enjoyments, though he has but little of the world, it is a green pasture. The Lord gives quiet and contentment in the mind, whatever the lot is. Are we blessed with the green pastures of the ordinances, let us not think it enough to pass through them, but let us abide in them. The consolations of the Holy Spirit are the still waters by which the saints are led; the streams which flow from the Fountain of living waters. Those only are led by the still waters of comfort, who walk in the paths of righteousness. The way of duty is the truly pleasant way. The work of righteousness in peace. In these paths we cannot walk, unless. God lead us into them, and lead us on in them. Discontent and distrust proceed from unbelief; an unsteady walk is the consequence: let us then simply trust our Shepherd’s care, and hearken to his voice. The valley of the shadow of death may denote the most severe and terrible affliction, or dark dispensation of providence, that the psalmist ever could come under. Between the part of the flock on earth and that which is gone to heaven, death lies like a dark valley that must be passed in going from one to the other. But even in this there are words which lessen the terror. It is but the shadow of death: the shadow of a serpent will not sting, nor the shadow of a sword kill. It is a valley, deep indeed, and dark, and miry; but valleys are often fruitful, and so is death itself fruitful of comforts to God’s people. It is a walk through it: they shall not be lost in this valley, but get safe to the mountain on the other side. Death is a king of terrors, but not to the sheep of Christ. When they come to die, God will rebuke the enemy; he will guide them with his rod, and sustain them with his staff. There is enough in the gospel to comfort the saints when dying, and underneath them are the everlasting arms. The Lord’s people feast at his table, upon the provisions of his love. Satan and wicked men are not able to destroy their comforts, while they are anointed with the Holy Spirit, and drink of the cup of salvation which is ever full. Past experience teaches believers to trust that the goodness and mercy of God will follow them all the days of their lives, and it is their desire and determination, to seek their happiness in the service of God here, and they hope to enjoy his love for ever in heaven. While here, the Lord can make any situation pleasant, by the anointing of his Spirit and the joys of his salvation. But those that would be satisfied with the blessings of his house, must keep close to the duties of it.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.
