Richard DeVos
(1926-2018)

American businessman who co-founded Amway, dies at 92

Biography: Richard DeVos was an American businessman who co-founded the multi-level marketing company Amway (now known as Alticor) with Jay Van Andel in 1959. The company sold cleaning products and later expanded to distribute goods worldwide.

DeVos was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Dutch American parents who worked with electrical equipment. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II prior to entering into business.

He became very wealthy from Amway, although the company has been criticized as a pyramid scheme and even banned from India due to their business practices. In 2012, Forbes said he was the 60th richest person in the United States with an estimated net worth of $5.1 billion.

In 1970, DeVos and his wife Helen started a foundation that supported education, healthcare, the arts and conservative political causes. DeVos donated large sums of money to the Republican Party over the years.

He served for a period as the finance chairman for the Republican National Committee. DeVos was also close friends with former President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty Ford and, when Ford died, DeVos was an honorary pallbearer at his funeral.

In 1991, DeVos bought the Orlando Magic NBA team in 1991 for $85 million. He had previously tried to get a Major League Baseball team in Orlando but failed to do so.

After being denied a transplant in the United States as he was deemed too old and unhealthy, DeVos went to the United Kingdom for a heart transplant in 1997. He wrote about this experience in his book “Hope From My Heart” (1997).

Luke chapter 13:

In 1st-century Israel (as well as every culture throughout history), there was the belief that if bad things happened to a person, it was indicative of their sin.

Today, our New Age culture calls it “karma,” or perhaps “bad vibes.”

But Jesus tells us that our first instinct should not be blame or mockery, but the examination of our own hearts.
This is doubly true in our current time, when the first instinct of many people is to gleefully celebrate or laugh about death – even political assassinations!
Few of those mockers ever stop to think about the condition of their own soul before God Almighty. They have forgotten “memento mori” – to remember that they too must die.
Death, after all, is the consequence for our rebellion against God. The only way out of it is to make ourselves right with God.

COMMENTARY FOR ISAIAH 55

An invitation to receive freely the blessings of the Saviour. (1-5) Gracious offers of pardon and peace. (6-13)

1-5 All are welcome to the blessings of salvation, to whom those blessings are welcome. In Christ there is enough for all, and enough for each. Those satisfied with the world, that see no need of Christ, do not thirst. They are in no uneasiness about their souls: but where God gives grace, he gives a thirst after it; and where he has given a thirst after it, he will give it. Come to Christ, for he is the Fountain opened, he is the Rock smitten. Come to holy ordinances, to the streams that make glad the city of our God. Come to the healing waters, come to the living waters, #Re 22:17|. Our Saviour referred to this, #Joh 7:37|. Come, and buy; make it your own by application of the grace of the gospel to yourselves. Come, and eat; make it still more your own, and enjoy it. The world comes short of our expectations; we promise ourselves, at least, water in it, and we are disappointed; but Christ outdoes our expectations. We come to him, and we find wine and milk. The gifts offered to us are such as no price can be set upon. The things offered are already paid for; for Christ purchased them at the full price of his own blood, #1Pe 1:19|. Our wants are beyond number, and we have nothing to supply them; if Christ and heaven are ours, we see ourselves for ever indebted to free grace. Hearken diligently; let the proud heart stoop; not only come, but accept God’s offers. All the wealth and pleasure in the world, will not yield solid comfort and content to the soul. They do not satisfy even the appetites of the body; for all is vanity and vexation. Let the disappointments we meet with in the world, help to drive us to Christ, and to seek for satisfaction in him only. Then, and not before, we shall find rest for our souls. Hear, and your soul shall live. On what easy terms is happiness offered us! By the sure mercies of David, we are to understand the Messiah. All his mercies are covenant mercies; they are purchased by him, they are promised in him, and out of his hand they are dispensed to us. We know not how to find the way to the waters, but Christ is given to be a Leader, a Commander, to show us what to do, and enable us to do it. Our business is to obey him, and follow him. And there is no coming to the Father but by him. He is the Holy One of Israel, true to his promises; and he has promised to glorify Christ, by giving him the heathen for his inheritance.

6-13 Here is a gracious offer of pardon, and peace, and of all happiness. It shall not be in vain to seek God, now his word is calling to us, and his Spirit is striving with us. But there is a day coming when he will not be found. There may come such a time in this life; it is certain that at death and judgment the door will be shut. There must be not only a change of the way, but a change of the mind. We must alter our judgments about persons and things. It is not enough to break off from evil practices, we must strive against evil thoughts. To repent is to return to our Lord, against whom we have rebelled. If we do so, God will multiply to pardon, as we have multiplied to offend. But let none trifle with this plenteous mercy, or use it as an occasion to sin. Men’s thoughts concerning sin, Christ, and holiness, concerning this world and the other, vastly differ from God’s; but in nothing more than in the matter of pardon. We forgive, and cannot forget; but when God forgives sin, he remembers it no more. The power of his word in the kingdoms of providence and grace, is as certain as in that of nature. Sacred truth produces a spiritual change in the mind of men, which neither rain nor snow can make on the earth. It shall not return to the Lord without producing important effects. If we take a special view of the church, we shall find what great things God has done, and will do for it. The Jews shall come to their own land; this shall represent the blessings promised. Gospel grace will make a great change in men. Delivered from the wrath to come, the converted sinner finds peace in his conscience; and love constrains him to devote himself to the service of his Redeemer. Instead of being profane, contentious, selfish, or sensual, behold him patient, humble, kind, and peaceable. The hope of helping in such a work should urge us to spread the gospel of salvation. And do thou help us, O Spirit of all truth, to have such views of the fulness, freeness, and greatness of the rich mercy in Christ, as may remove from us all narrow views of sovereign grace.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

PLEASE READ THIS – this is not my Substack – it’s someone else’s – but a few years ago, I had a premonition about our drinking water system. I have posted here before about storing water safely at home – and the supplies to use to get an initial quantity of water stored safely in your garage, etc… but everyone needs a way to access water and turn it from ground, non-potable water, to water you can drink. The systems are simple – and are quite rudimentary and easy to use. I have successfully stored filtered drinking water for 3 years without any loss of quality or degradation. Savannah and I can use 7.5 gallons in a weekend for the two of us – not showering or bathing. I store 50 gallons in my garage on storage racks.

Please do. I also have two inside portable generators – 1 for heat and 1 for cooling. Each power station is 1 kW of power – and I use one of them for both my deep freeze and interior refrigerator with plenty of power to spare. The other, I use for heater and lighting and recharging devices. REMEMBER to measure INRUSH – it is what it takes to start up an appliance. A small heater can use up a lot of power source – so you may have to run them at their lower ratings – but you can do so safely – by running a test operation to measure the number of watts pulled. My freezer and refrigerator pull about 330 watts.

Again – one power station for heat. The other for cooling.

These can be recharged while they are running and create no emissions – so can be used inside the apartment. They can be recharged by AC, car battery, and solar panel – and I purchased the cabling and solar panel to be able to run them.

Once you have these things – should a major power grid event go out – close all your blinds and darken your windows. For in a neighborhood that is dark and desolate – people are going to run to the place where they can see a light on. If you turn your lights on – keep them in the interior of your home – away from windows and doors – you don’t want others to see what you have.
