I use sunscreen if I’m going to be outside for a long time, I do NOT tan, I try to wear long sleeve shirts but in the summer that’s not always possible. In the car I drape a towel over my left arm so it doesn’t burn.
Me either. I just can’t stand feeling all greasy. I don’t spend long hours in the sun and I wear a sun bonnet on float trips.
Despite my personal distaste I did usually try to be a conscientious mom when our son was young.
Only reason I use Coppertone every now and again here in Arizona is because I like the way it smells..
Sun is good for you in small doses. Many, many people are deficient in vitamin D , which the body produces naturally from sunlight exposure. Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with increased incidence and aggressiveness of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers. Low vitamin D is also linked to immune disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, MS, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, rheumatoid arthritis…
Seed oils are linked to skin cancer.

There is also some evidence that seed oils cause inflammation of arteries. Real butter and real fats in moderation is my thing.
As an example of how to use wisely. When you trim up some beef for that stir fry, toss the fatty chunks in your wok to render until a little crispy and season the pan a bit. It adds a very “beefy” flavor and you actually use less oil overall. It also allows you to throw those bits in the garbage without getting the smell and fly attraction of fresh meat. If you have too much rendered fat pour it into a container and it keeps in the fridge for a long time.
Buying beef tallow is like paying double for already high priced beef. Why not use every bit you can at current prices. You could even freeze those rendered beef bits and boil them later to enhance a broth.
On the green checkmark list, for the animal fats, make sure they are the 100% GRASS FED version. Not surprisingly, the grass fed versions are harder to find and more expensive but they can be found by anybody online.
If not grass fed, you get the high omega 6, low omega 3 problem making it closer to a seed oil. The reason people are fat and sick is because they get almost all their fats high in omega 6 and hardly any or no omega 3. That is what causes all the inflammation and metabolic syndrome ailments.
The corn plant is classified as a grass. Just like wheat, barley, etc.
I think the grass fed thing is more about letting animals roam a bit while supplementing with other feed. Keep in mind there is no grass in the winter so 100% is a little tough to do.

Where do you get duck fat? Duck eggs I buy at the local farmers market, they are great for baking but not equal, you need to read up on them before using them.
We simply save it and refrigerate when cooking duck.
MinnesotaMike gave instructions above for rendering beef fat. I’m not sure, but there must be a similar process for duck fat.
I used to eat a lot of duck, but the price of duck now is ridiculous.

Low vitamin D IMO is why so many black folks struggle.
I tell my students about vitamin D and winter (low sunlight) and skin color. I want all of them to stay healthy. I take 4000 IU a day (up to 10,000 is ok, but it is a fat soluble vitamin and you can get into trouble by taking too much). I’ll double it for a few days if I’m feeling like I’m coming down with something.

They pull the same scam with cholesterol. All that matters is that the triglycerides are low. And to lower triglycerides, you must eat less carbs… and eat the right kind of fats and not eat the wrong fats.
Confusing because many things about cholesterol is counterintuitive and a person has to be very particular about the types of fats they consume. Pharma exploits this to put everybody on statins when all they need to do is be careful about food choices and exercise. To understand it, a person has to spend many hours learning it.

Yeah, they reduced cholesterol too, the doctor wanted me to go on them 20 years ago and mine was actually off the chart. She wanted me to go on statins.
I told the doctor to shove it where the sun don’t shine. I got it down to the then acceptable 200 with niacin and it’s been there ever since.
Niacin and sodium bicarbonate can heal kidneys and keep healthy.
I know this from first hand experience.

Cholesterol was high so a nurse dr put me on statins. Statins make me fall down. They as the real Dr said relax things blood vessels, muscles etc.
2nd trip to the Drs office the real Dr put me on a weaker statin. Still can’t stand up.
So, I quit taking anything went online found flushing bad oils out with good, Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
One month later back to Dr for cholesterol test.
100% perfect even lower than suggested levels. hdl and ldl
So all good now have always used extra virgin olive oil ….it was buttered toast that did it.

I did the opposite, starting 2.5 years ago.
No seed oils of any kind. Only grass fed fatty beef, milk, cheese and butter. A tin of sardines with no seed oils once a week. Mennonite free range eggs. No sugar either and minimal carbs. A bit of fruit or veg if I feel like it.
My bloodwork is fine and I feel better mentally than I have in 20 years. I’ve lost 40lbs of fat and gained back 10lbs of muscle.
But My doctor tells me I must go on statins just because I’m 70. 🤪🤣

Benzene is a contaminant found in some sunscreens, not an ingredient. Many sunscreens contain UV blocking ingredients called Avobenzone and Oxybenzone. They are not benzene, nor related to benzene. Sunscreens do block the body’s ability to generate Vitamin D, but Vitamin D has not been proven yet to help prevent cancer.

Apparently this is not a new study. In 2023 it came out and was primarily aimed at some genetics thing. Nicolas Hulscher is not an author of the study. The actual authors say this interpretation is wrong and claim that there is some paradox of high sunscreen users are out in the sun more and frequently misapply the sunscreen.
The researchers saw the correlation, recognized it as a known confounding pattern, and explicitly concluded that the data supports more sunscreen use – not less.
Hmmm, so which is it? Is sunscreen still a thing or not? I try to use as little as possible because it’s just greasy icky, but a small amount of spf50 pretty much prevents me from any burn given a couple hours exposure in the boat.
