The circumstances surrounding Jeanine John Taele, 38, canvassing Trump National Golf Club ahead of President Trump’s visit certainly indicate Taele was planning a 4th assassination attempt on the life of President Trump.
Taele was arrested at Trump National Golf Club in CA with fake credentials, a fake badge and claims of being a State Dept security agent, while taking pictures and filming the venue. Taele carried armor piercing and hollow point bullets with a loaded handgun in his vehicle. [LA Sheriff’s Office]
When agents searched his home, they found an illegally modified AR style rifle with barrel shortened, body armor, high-capacity magazines, unlawful ammunition and “multiple notebooks containing concerning statements.” “He’s now facing 4 state charges and a federal charge.”
Taele was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm (25400(a)(1) PC) and Possession of Armor-Piercing/Prohibited Ammunition (31310 PC).
Recognizing the potential security implications surrounding the incident, detectives from the Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) obtained and executed a search warrant yesterday, August 3rd, for Taele’s residence in the city of Downey.
During the search, investigators recovered:
• An illegally modified AR platform rifle
• A 1911 .45 caliber pistol
• An AR platform upper receiver
• Body armor
• High-capacity magazines
• Bulk pistol and rifle ammunition
• Multiple notebooks containing concerning statements
• Two radio signal devices
The investigation is being conducted in close coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the United States Secret Service. Additional charges could be added as the investigation continues. Taele remains in custody. The investigation is ongoing. (source)

AP ammo is not commonly available in gun stores or flea markets. My guess is that he “liberated” some rounds from his time in the Corps. The rest can be purchased legally, although much of it cannot be purchased in California. But in, say, Nevada you can.
Last I knew you could buy surplus M855 Ball ammunition made with a steel core fairly easily in a lot of places outside of California. Would be more than a bit generous to call it armor piercing specifically.

No, his AR is not a pistol. It has a buttstock. It is illegal because it qualifies as a short-barreled rifle (barrel length less than 16 inches), which must be registered with the ATF as such. He likely purchased an upper with an 11 or 12 inch barrel and installed it on his lower receiver, making it violative of the NFA. Hollow point ammo is not illegal in Commiefornia. The ammo in his pistol magazines is reportedly armor piercing, which is illegal. Magazines holding more than ten rounds are illegal in California.

Media help fuel this dangerous cycle by stripping the arrest of its context. Per the arrest of Jeanine John Taele’s arrest, this is Axios’ Rebecca Falconer, headlining her piece as,
“Man arrested near Trump golf course after gun found in car.”
Falconer mentioned the information that “Trump is visiting California this week to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner” but not the fact that Trump has been the victim of several assassination attempts.
Just because Trump keeps surviving attempted assassinations or apparent attempted assassinations doesn’t mean they should become less newsworthy.
If anything, the escalation of left-wing political violence makes each attempt or plot more deserving of coverage. The problem for the propaganda press is that covering the left’s murderous tendencies damages its political interests.
