Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle 
 
St. Thomas, the Apostle, who at first did not believe, has become for the Church one of the first witnesses to her faith. She is fond of appealing to his testimony and frequently puts in our mouths those simple words whereby he expressed the fervor of his regained faith: “My Lord and my God.” It is known that St. Thomas preached the Gospel in Asia beyond the frontiers of the Roman Empire, probably in Persia and possibly as far afield as India.

There is very little about the apostle Thomas in the Gospels; one text calls him the “twin.” Rarely during Jesus’ lifetime does he stand out among his colleagues. There is the instance before the raising of Lazarus, when Jesus was still in Perea and Thomas exclaimed: “Let us also go and die with Him.” Best-known is his expression of unbelief after the Savior’s death, giving rise to the phrase “doubting Thomas.” Nevertheless, the passage describing the incident, had as today’s Gospel, must be numbered among the most touching in Sacred Scripture. 
 
In the Breviary lessons, Pope St. Gregory the Great makes the following reflections: “Thomas’s unbelief has benefited our faith more than the belief of the other disciples; it is because he attained faith through physical touch that we are confirmed in the faith beyond all doubt. Indeed, the Lord permitted the apostle to doubt after the resurrection; but He did not abandon him in doubt. By his doubt and by his touching the sacred wounds, the apostle became a witness to the truth of the resurrection. Thomas touched and cried out: My Lord and my God! And Jesus said to him: Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed. Now if Thomas saw and touched the Savior, why did Jesus say: Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed? Because he saw something other than what he believed. For no mortal man can see divinity. Thomas saw the Man Christ and acknowledged His divinity with the words: My Lord and my God. Faith therefore followed upon seeing.” 
 
Concerning later events in the apostle’s life, very meager information exists. The Martyrology has this: “At Calamina (near Madras in India) the martyrdom of the apostle Thomas—he announced the Gospel to the Parthians and finally came to India. After he had converted numerous tribes to Christianity, he was pierced with lances at the king’s command.” 
 
Reflection: Cast away all disquieting doubts and learn to triumph over old weaknesses as St. Thomas did, who “by his ignorance hath instructed the ignorant, and by, his incredulity hath served for the faith of all ages.” -Butler, Lives of the Saints 

Pope St. Pius X granted an indulgence to all who, looking at the Body and Blood of Christ, say the words of St. Thomas, “Dominus meus et Deus meus” – My Lord and my God. This pious invocation is retained in the current edition of Manual of Indulgences (USCCB) and is often silently uttered by the faithful during the Elevation of Host and Chalice after consecration during the Mass. It also may be silently uttered in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament during Eucharistic Adoration.

COMMENTARY FOR JOHN 1:12

The apostle and evangelist, John, seems to have been the youngest of the twelve. He was especially favoured with our Lord’s regard and confidence, so as to be spoken of as the disciple whom Jesus loved. He was very sincerely attached to his Master. He exercised his ministry at Jerusalem with much success, and outlived the destruction of that city, agreeably to Christ’s prediction, ch. #21:22|. History relates that after the death of Christ’s mother, John resided chiefly at Ephesus. Towards the close of Domitian’s reign he was banished to the isle of Patmos, where he wrote his Revelation. On the accession of Nerva, he was set at liberty, and returned to Ephesus, where it is thought he wrote his Gospel and Epistles, about A. D. 97, and died soon after. The design of this Gospel appears to be to convey to the Christian world, just notions of the real nature, office, and character of that Divine Teacher, who came to instruct and to redeem mankind. For this purpose, John was directed to select for his narrative, those passages of our Saviour’s life, which most clearly displayed his Divine power and authority; and those of his discourses, in which he spake most plainly of his own nature, and of the power of his death, as an atonement for the sins of the world. By omitting, or only briefly mentioning, the events recorded by the other evangelists, John gave testimony that their narratives are true, and left room for the doctrinal statements already mentioned, and for particulars omitted in the other Gospels, many of which are exceedingly important.The Divinity of Christ. 

6-14 John the Baptist came to bear witness concerning Jesus. Nothing more fully shows the darkness of men’s minds, than that when the Light had appeared, there needed a witness to call attention to it. Christ was the true Light; that great Light which deserves to be called so. By his Spirit and grace he enlightens all that are enlightened to salvation; and those that are not enlightened by him, perish in darkness. Christ was in the world when he took our nature upon him, and dwelt among us. The Son of the Highest was here in this lower world. He was in the world, but not of it. He came to save a lost world, because it was a world of his own making. Yet the world knew him not. When he comes as a Judge, the world shall know him. Many say that they are Christ’s own, yet do not receive him, because they will not part with their sins, nor have him to reign over them. All the children of God are born again. This new birth is through the word of God as the means, #1Pe 1:23|, and by the Spirit of God as the Author. By his Divine presence Christ always was in the world. But now that the fulness of time was come, he was, after another manner, God manifested in the flesh. But observe the beams of his Divine glory, which darted through this veil of flesh. Men discover their weaknesses to those most familiar with them, but it was not so with Christ; those most intimate with him saw most of his glory. Although he was in the form of a servant, as to outward circumstances, yet, in respect of graces, his form was like the Son of God His Divine glory appeared in the holiness of his doctrine, and in his miracles. He was full of grace, fully acceptable to his Father, therefore qualified to plead for us; and full of truth, fully aware of the things he was to reveal.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Restoration of Weddington Cemetery continued:

Lots of miles and years have passed since that pic was taken.  

That cemetery had never been fenced in and the field it was in had been used as a cow pasture. Cows love to lay down against things and use upright objects to rub on and scratch themselves. 

Before we could even start work on the cemetery we had to build a bridge over a small creek that heavy equipment could pass over to gain access.  

John found 12′ long section of heavy walled ductile iron pipe about 5′ in diameter that was perfect and had been discarded by the RR company and was along Hwy 32 not far from Brockway Glass. I arranged for Johnson crane service to load it on one of Mofab’s 20′ flatbed trucks that I had borrowed and then they followed me to the creek and lowered put it in the creek bed where I wanted it.  

I then cut steel plates at Mofab to fit over each upper end of the pipe and borrowed Mofab’s portable welding unit and welded the plates onto the pipe to make side rails so that the gravel we put over the pipe would stay in place. I got a contractor to bring riprap rock make a foundation for the road bed and to stabilize the pipe and they put #8 gravel over those larger angular riprap rocks to form the road over it.  

And that was just the beginning of the work we had to do. 

We laid out a grid system for the cemetery based on a drawing I drafted and then recorded the locations of all grave stones and grave stone fragments on the drawing. We probed the entire cemetery for grave marking foundation stones and grave stones or the pieces of them. The location of everything was recorded on the drawing. 

We then moved everything we found except the few monuments that were still standing and intact. Contracted for grading to level the ground and for the erection of a fence around the cemetery. 

During the depression the WPA had mapped the locations of the graves of all veterans they could find so we could locate even those that didn’t have markers. We ordered new markers from the VA for those that did not have one. John did the research and ordering of those markers. 

We repaired all the broken markers using epoxy and sometimes aluminum frames and cleaned all markers and mounted them where they had been in concrete foundations. Then planted grass. 

On this day in 1863.

After two days of intensive battles with Confederate forces attacking the Union line, Lee decides to concentrate his attack on the center of the Union line. What would become known as Pickett’s charge failed and the defeated Army of Northern Virginia would be forced to retreat the following day.

On that same day, July 4th, that Lee’s Army began its retreat back south, Confederate Lt. Gen Pemberton surrendered his besieged Army at Vicksburg, TN. to Union Maj. Gen. Grant.

From that day forward the Confederacy’s only hope of surviving was to hope that the citizens in the North would vote President Lincoln out of office due to fatigue and the long Union casualty lists.

But Maj. General Sherman took Atlanta before the election and for the first time ever an Army in the field allowed it’s soldiers to vote and those two events ensured Lincoln won reelection by a margin nobody had anticipated.
