Yes, my dear friend’s family is there. The citizens are scared.. 12,500 people were slaughtered in 2 days… rapes, beheading. My friend’s father is former police and her late husband an Iranian Air Force pilot who was imprisoned for speaking out against the regime. as it happens, our family knows a couple; close friends there, as well. and the concept that they are all eagerly awaiting being bombed so they can get their freedom; or that all the young or all the this or that are in this or that camp; is a lot more nuanced and complicated than we keep dismissively making it. not much different than in the former republic of the US.
Strange, the Iranians I know are pretty clear, they hate and loathe what the IRGC has done to their country, they want them gone, removed so that they can try and build a country not ruled by crippling fear. They all know friends and family who’ve been executed by the regime, but they are fiercely proud patriots as well, and it’s a humiliation that they cannot remove this stain on their history themselves, but need outside help.

I can’t understand what’s wrong with your thinking when almost daily we get more news of the IRGC killing Iranians because they ask for freedom. And yet you daily post comments over and over questioning if the people of Iran want freedom.
Just today, the news reported gang rapes of hospital nurses because they treated protesters. The rapes were violent and prolonged, leading many nurses to require operations to try and repair the damage or at least let them live (for example, the need to remove damaged intestines).

The logistics of holding human shields in place every single minute of every single day for an unknown 5 minutes of destruction that could happen at any time is not only daunting, but nerve racking; to quote Tom Petty, “The waiting is the hardest part.” You better believe that the idea of desertion among the guards would spread more, as well as escape of the human shields.”
In addition, he could continue to strike targets as already occurring and add in low level sonic boom flights over these targets at zero dark thirty, large bombs landing close enough to feel the concussion (but at a safe distance from the hostages,) and picking off the security forces guarding the human shields when targets become available. If one thought along these lines for any length of time, I’m sure many other good ideas would float to the surface and there is still three weeks before congressional approval is needed.

The truth is we don’t know if those Iranian civilians are willing to sacrifice their lives willingly for their country – just like a lot of Americans would if we were being attacked. The irony of this Recognition Gambit is that it turns the IRGC into rebels in their own country, meaning the more they fight to keep the Strait closed, the more they justify the invited U.S. presence.

It may not be that the government is “shredding” jobs. Rather, employees may be leaving after finding new jobs, and they are not being replaced. I wouldn’t give the government credit for purposefully downsizing the workforce.
Why? This admin has been clear about it. The holdups are courts and unions, otherwise we’d have shedded many more millions by now (which would still be too few).
I know people who work inside the federal employee unions. They are losing their jobs, too. Some senior people are just retiring early, or hanging on hoping to be the last ones let go.
There’s less federal employee work, and there are only so many protests they can go to.
They see what is happening, they are losing their sources of new work and income, and there is nothing they can do to stop it. A win-win for us taxpayers.
Concerning the Germans in NATO: when I was teaching German, I had the opportunity to visit the country almost yearly from the 1980’s until 2006, a little over 20 years.
The attitude of the younger generations – given that they grew up in rubble and/or experienced the anti-military, anti-patriotism attitudes in the aftermath of the Nazi Era – was that Patriotism had led to Nazism, and the military was defiled by its acquiescence to the Nazis.
Therefore, only idiots would join the military…or neo-Nazis.
I saw and heard this first-hand from both college and high-school students, not to mention adults, and of course the attitude was seen in movies and television.
And as far as immigration from Islamic countries, Germany was one of the first to import Turks to help rebuild the country during the “Economic Miracle” (Wirtschaftswunder) of the 1950’s and beyond.
The Turks never integrated much into German society, which too often was just fine with the Germans, too many of whom despised the Turks and expected them to leave ,when they reached the age for early retirement, and return to Turkey.
Twenty years have passed, and from my contacts there not much has changed among the older people. One teacher, whom I knew well, told me she would never come to America for another visit, because President TRUMP was so “awful” and even frightening.
However, the rising party called The Alternative for Germany is obviously supported either by the youngest Germans reacting against the pacifism of their elders and the increased immigration from Moslem lands at a time when the economy could no longer use them.
I do know some Germans who have been very grateful for America’s help after WW II and for the presence of the American military and understand the benefits of that presence!
But it will be difficult for the country to agree on much of anything, given the multi-party system, which is a disaster for them like the Uniparty is for us.
Also, keep in mind that “Germany” is much more fragmented than even the United States at present. Not only is the old East Germany a different area culturally, but the divisions from medieval times persist: the Rhinelanders, the Berliners, the Hamburgers, the Northern Lutheran vs. the Southern Catholic areas, the Bavarians acting like a quasi-independent country, etc.
So, it will be interesting to discover if America leaves its German bases, whether the reaction will be one of relief or regret.
I suspect it will be a mixture of both, as the “Pacifist” class will cheer the end of US involvement in their country, without realizing exactly how much they have been protected by the “Damn Yanks”, while the realists will recognize that they have lost the Big Brother who always had their back against the bullies on the playground!
Much like here in our own country, the majority of people have no idea who is actually pulling the levers of powers and thus, they reflexively cheer for “their” side and can’t figure out why everything is getting worse for normal, everyday, hardworking taxpaying citizens, when both parties continually promise to make things better!!

He said Orban has been better than anybody at helping Washington understand what the Ukrainians need and what the Russians need to achieve peace. He accused EU bureaucrats of foreign election interference in Hungary five days before Orban faces voters.
Now hold both threads simultaneously. Orban is the only NATO leader with a documented direct channel to Putin. He is also one of the only European leaders publicly aligned with Trump’s transactional diplomacy. The Iran war has structurally removed Gulf energy supply from global markets for what the IEA calls the largest disruption in history. That removal destroys Russia’s primary leverage over Europe, which was energy dependency, because Europe is now scrambling for non-Russian, non-Gulf alternatives and building the infrastructure to never be dependent on either again.

If he backs down after so loudly and profanely assuring an apocalyptic outcome, the impact of his future pronouncements will be greatly diluted and the murderous Iranian regime will be emboldened.
If he executes the massive bombing strikes and kills hundreds/thousands of Iranian civilians used as human shields, he will be condemned worldwide.
The President’s most recent, roaring bluster created this situation, giving the Iranian regime the time necessary to organize an highly effective parry to his attack through its use of innocents who will be killed.

I think you need to understand this isn’t WW2, or the Vietnam War, a plane at 30k feet can accurately drop a series of small diameter bombs, with either small or inert warheads that can wreck a transformer, or substation. Cruise missiles, fired hundreds of miles away, can saturate the area with graphite bomblets that spew filaments over the lines to short them out, neither of these methods risk killing anyone, even a human shield. Or FPV drones can attack, or EMP devices, or…..
Then again, the whole power grid might be placed under a cyber attack that specifically targets certain locales, or the sturm and drang takes out main supply routes and key rail targets, or the popular resistance can be shielded and supported, or…..

First, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission told Jack Phillips that he may sell baked goods only if he’s willing to include messages that violate his religious beliefs. The Supreme Court said that violated Phillips’ First Amendment rights. Up next, Colorado’s “anti-discrimination” law allowed creative entrepreneurs, like web designer Lorie Smith, to do business only if they, too, would include messages in their work that violated their religious beliefs. Again, the Supreme Court said this violated the First Amendment.
But Colorado had another law, this one dictating what licensed counselors like Kaley Chiles may say to their young clients about sexuality and the sexes. They may, the law says, provide acceptance, support, and assistance for “an individual’s … identity exploration and development.” That much might sound OK, but it only works in one direction. Counselors may help an individual who wishes to separate so-called gender identity from his or her sex, but not those who wish to align them.
In other words, a counselor in Colorado may help a boy — even without his parents’ permission — accept that he’s actually a girl, but must tell a girl — even with her parents’ permission — who doesn’t want to be a boy that she has to go elsewhere.
