Years back I asked a friend, who was the nuclear engineer on a super tanker, why don’t you suck up fresh water for ballast and take it back to the oil exporting country?
You could have a fresh water purification plant on board and deliver a whole ship load of fresh water on arrival.
His eyes glazed over for a bit, thinking. He said that was a great idea and would work just fine for ballast. I never heard from him again before he died.
So….why not do it??
That is, suck in fresh water while delivering oil. Many ports are at freshwater river locations, where it meets the sea.
De-salinization is crazy expensive.
KSA was trying to access fresh water from beneath the dessert but they are pretty inefficient at doing anything so not sure where that project is these days. The push was because desalinization is so expensive.
CA is the same. They would desalinate but the money laundering prevents it/ and the expense. (and I’m sure things I have no clue about)

Over the last forty years, Iran’s growers have faced pressures from sanctions, tariffs and restrictions on their ability to access international financial tools.
Although pistachios themselves were not on the list of sanctioned products, restrictions on global banking made trade difficult for Iranian farmers.
All that changed in 2016 following the Iran nuclear deal, officially The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This agreement with the US and its allies removed sanctions.
Regarding pistachios. Thr California Davis University system planted various nuts and citrus @ various locations throughout allvoff California in 1900. 8 almond trees. Pistachios trees. 8 apticotctrees. 8 olive trees. 8 fig trees. And more on my grandparents farm homestead. In 1905 a decision was made to grow almonds. 320 acres. Producing in 1910. The pistachios never produced because the female trees produce the nuts. Male is the pollinator. We had no male trees. 1970 when I got out of Vietnam I bought male trees. 2 years later we had acsmall pistachio crop. Long story we started working with a few Iranian pistachio farmers from Kerman Iran. Iranian nuts were stained white and red…tovhide the black stains. UC Davis propagated a new variety that the hull would come off easy leaving no stain. We worked together. Lots of time and hard work proved successful. Then 1979. We kept growing…Iran not so much. Yes….our family were pioneers in nut farming. Females have the nuts! Gracias Dios

A side note. Yhe pistachio seedling trees only produce small seeds with a very hard outer shell. Very hard to get to germinate . 10% germinate success. One day without telling my dad or my uncles I soaked 100 seeds in a batter acid solution 20 % acid to water. Gracias Dios. I got 90% to Crack open and germinate . Within 6 months vi was selling seedling pistachio trees to farmers. The days when We didn’t need no stinking licenses !! Good Ole days

My SD neighbours have an almond and citrus farm East of the California line near Lake Havasu. They’ve had it for 40 years or so. The mom told me they had a 40 year old Land Rover which still runs and she recently gave it to her nephew!

Yes they were dyed Red and white. Would stain my lips and tongue . During harvest season our mid day lunch consisted of water…almonds and pistachios when ripe. Late September. Almond harvest began in July. 4 months of in the sun work. I’m 77 and cancer free. Gracias Dios 🙏

I have been saying that since the 1990s. If one looks at how the water infrastructure is so mismanaged in CA, and the resulting “government-created dust bowl” in the Central Valley, perhaps the war is on.
I first learned about our water infrastructure from Devin Nunes when he was still congressman from the Central Valley, when John Batchelor interviewed him (that used to be a terrific radio show).
The infrastructure was built to capture snowmelt from the Sierras, store it, and carry the state through the regular 5-8 year drought cycles. Now because of “a tiny little fish” (Pacific smelt), the snowmelt runs out to sea. And also dams are being removed instead of being built.
The Substack UNWON keeps track of a current battle to keep a dam in place which provides water and power to half a million ranchers, farmers and regular folk in the rural Sonoma-Marin region (Potter Valley Dam). Brook Rollins USDA has been most helpful.
Also the state water agency seems to be grabbing control, even over private wells.
A tsunami of misery is coming to this state.
@FHPO I believe you leading out one important factor in California’s water issues…. UNCHECKED IMMIGRATION.…. You see, the utility infrastructure isn’t built to handle the amount of people drawing water, electricity, driving on the roads etc.. Even if the smelt wasn’t in the equation the water would still be short.
Why is it that people don’t see this? Why do people not f*cking freak out about water availability in California? Another piece of the foundation of the once free people in California is now easily controlled. Not just a community but 95% of the state.

On a slightly different issue, I visited the Hearst Castle in central California last November. Two very busy, separate restaurants in the visitor center plus a large coffee shop. No indoor bathrooms can be used- large, off limits indoor bathrooms surrounded by yellow tape with signs stating that you must use the outdoor porta potties indefinitely due to water shortages or whatever. How much energy and chemicals are used transporting and dumping the porta potties? Who gets that porta pottie contract? Are porta potties more environmentally friendly overall versus indoor plumbing? As David Letterman once said: In California, its still the wettest drought on record.
The unchecked immigration is not the cause of water issues in CA.
It’s the cause of lots of problems, but this water problem has been brewing since at least early 1990s.
It’s not an easy topic to elucidate on: corruption, interstate and international agreements, nature, mismanagement, politics, etc.

They are able to produce (even in the desert) millions of gallons per day of pure water directly from the atmosphere. (H2O)
This company is already in the process of closing contracts with UAE and others in the ME, as well as South America and even has water projects already started in California.
The water war is all over the west and not just CA. CA is criminal in favoring the stupid little bait fish and letting fresh water flow into the sea. It really is trying to destroy fishing, farming and agriculture in general for population control.

I can’t figure out how the coastal areas of WA and OR have seen drought conditions in the last 20-30 years. I haven’t researched. It makes no sense.

It has to do with snowfall. That’s what recharges our aquifers and wells.
Rain just runs off into the creeks and rivers and then into the ocean, whereas snow melts into the ground and in about three years finally comes back up through our wells.
Or not, depending on what the snowfall was or wasn’t three years previously.
They just lie and hope no one will notice the moss on everything West ngof the Cascades/Sierras and the dust on everything East.

I live in Camarillo, CA. We have 2 desalinization facilities in our town. (2 separate water districts)

California continues to allow billions of gallons of fresh water from the Sacramento River flow out through the delta and into the Pacific ocean…to save a one inch useless bait fish called the Delta Smelt. Having driven up and down I-5 from SF to LA more times than I can count I saw first hand all of the farms with dried up fruit trees etc. which died due to those farms not getting enough water. CA could easily fix this but the libs value the Delta Smelt more than they value human farming.

It’s already very expensive in the out skits of Arizona and New Mexico. The expensive part is transporting the water and wages of delivery driver. I’ve entertained off grid properties. Water is around $0.10 per gallon if I were to to go and get it myself. Some townships have stopped selling water to people outside city limits because of scarcity. 500 gallons hauled on a water trailer isn’t very expensive if transported yourself.
Personally i’d buy drinking water and the stuff i brought in would be showers, dishes, ect…
Don’t know that I would be wanting any water, which isn’t going to be all that fresh, from a tanker port. When I was a chief engineer we would never distill to potable or boiler feed water in port. And I don’t think you are going to use fuel tanks for potable water.
It’s bad enough in New Orleans were you get water from the Mississippi after everyone upstream has dumped their crap into it. But continuing threat when the river has low flow of salt water intrusion even that far upriver.

Yep the ice bergs are already displacing the water. Only land ice melting could raise water levels, like glaciers. But it would take a tremendous amount as nature has a way of warming that water, turning it into vapor and then depositing it back on the land as rain or snow. It’s a never ending cycle.

Saudis bought up farms along the Colorado River in the county and the adjacent county we lived in AZ (LaPaz, Mohave) they grow water heavy crops like alfalfa exploiting the grandfathered in unlimited water usage rights for farms there. They fly the crops back to their country. Depleting the water reserves of Arizona .
And alfalfa isn’t truly water heavy uless one is trying to get cuttings 4 times a year.
They were (and probably still are) purchasing land in AZ, sinking wells, and transporting the water back home. They would deplete and move on.
Kris Mayes said she was going to do something about that but apparently easier said than done. Sure would like to know who approved (and probably profited) from that crime on citizens. Yet still I constantly hear about how we need growth – more homes, more people here in AZ so I guess they already have a plan to sell us $10 gallon water GRRRRRR.
So much for having to guarantee 100 year water supply before getting approval to build. Still trying to convince my spouse to sell property in AZ–before the water situation becomes life threatening
The current allocation for the lower Colorado ends at the end of the year. A new plan is in development for Lake Powell and Lake Mead and the public comment period ended last week.
I am not sure why Lake Powell was approved so close to Lake Mead. Lake Powell is so huge all the water just evaporates anyway.
My why is i’m sure naive but how have those people survived the centuries without those plants to take out the salt.
Prior populations were naturally limited by what was provided by nature (Oases, rivers, etc), and, in some cases, human manipulation.
The Middle East (17 countries – 2026) has an estimated population of 515 million (living in an environment that once provided very limited fresh water access for relatively small communities, with major cities, scattered throughout the region)
That population is projected to grow to 665.4 million by 2050.
Desalination is the only viable solution for fresh water to support such populations in the region.
The salt removed, however, has to go somewhere after removal. At least some of the salt removed is returned to the source from which it was taken.
Desalination subsequently becomes even more expensive with the higher concentration of salt in the available water supply going forward.
A never ending cycle.
In addition, the surrounding ecosystem also becomes more “toxic” to the fauna/flora currently living therein.
The question is, Imho…
How long before the process becomes inevitably “unaffordable”…
Even with profits from “Oil” sales to subsidize said process?
The sad thing is the shieks have pissed away so much wealth that they could have hauled icebergs from Antarctica to dilute the salt content of the Persian Gulf. I think once the brine dumped by the desalination plants raises salinity to 20-30000 ppm most sea life will start to die off.

Some research suggests the rocky coral reefs in the North are already in decline.
These reefs, along with the Mangroves, may well be the “canary in the coal mine” wrt to the health of the aquatic environment in the gulf.
Industrial pollutants and the increased encroachment/ destruction of habitat from human expansion along the coasts, have played no small part in the loss of diversity amongst the aquatic populations.
In general, the more dense (saline content) water settles to the bottom of the Persian Gulf as it flows southward into the Gulf of Oman.
Conversely, “fresher” waters travel northward from the Gulf of Oman, into the Persian Gulf, atop this southward flow.
As the salinity increases in the Persian Gulf, more of the shallower waters will be effected. As this occurs, likely more of the ecosystem will be negatively effected, as well.
This slow, but sure degradation will cause imbalances in the ecosystem. Some will adapt, some…
not so much.
The increase in demand for “fresh” water, coupled with an ever more saline water supply, does not bode well for the denizens of the Persian Gulf.
Nor, those who depend on it’s bounty.

Water at most ports is usually somewhat polluted and certain chemicals and oil will destroy the membranes in a desalination plant. When a ship is underway on the ocean it is generating its’ own electric power, usually with some excess reserve. So it is easier underway to run a desalination plant at full output and fill your fresh water tanks then sell the excess when dockside. Also ballast tanks get nasty and you wouldn’t want your drinking water coming out of them. BTW, I am a retired Merchant Mariner, Chief Engineer.

Major coastal cities of Israel have had de-desalination facilities since the 1950’s, as they realized early the vulnerability of anything “water” linked to the Jordan River.
Those facilities were targets for attempted air-attacks by Syria and Egypt during the 1967, 1973 and 1983 wars. Likely targets of anything being fired at Israel since the Russian M1930 long range guns were installed by the Syrians on the Golan by the Syrians in 1966.
One of the first things installed in the Port of Elliat on the Red Sea, after being captured in 1948 by the Israelis, was a de-desalination facility as they developed the area.
The same is true for the once UK dominated areas of the smaller kingdoms in the Persian Gulf, Aden and Yemen. Those were major outposts of the Empire with Naval Bases and Airbases to control the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf since at least 1914.
It was not lost on the rulers of Saudi Arabia, that some sort of water supply was needed to grow.

In my crazy socialist area of northern Minnesotastan gas was $4.56 this past Saturday.
This information is way off on the cost in my state DE. I have six gas stations within a six-mile radius of my house and not one of them is as high as what AAA states. As of yesterday, the highest I have seen is Sunoco at $3.30. The lowest is BJ’s at $ 2.69. Seems to me the gas stations who have not even received a new tanker delivery are price gouging.

President Trump has said that he, himself, decided not to bomb Iran earlier this year. He had said “Help is on the way.” Then he canceled the mission.
Viewing the present war, and the extent to which we are going to disarm Iran, which is comprehensive, it is clear the original plan to bomb would have been ineffective, leaving the regime in power to retaliate against the Iranian people.
So, who was it in the Trump administration, who tried to sell the president on the original plan, which would have been ineffective? This question has not been asked, but it should be asked.
Using his own wits, President Trump, at the last minute cancelled a plan, that might have rebounded in a severe injury to his administration, leading to all sorts of discredit. Waiting to do the job right, with military planning to cover all threats, is leading to a remarkable victory and a step up on the world stage.

Does a specific jury have to be impaneled as opposed to potential jurors for the law to apply?
If we had a CONgress able to pass even the most basic sane legislation, a person could rightly expect them to protect juror integrity and the rule of law.
Short of that, all prosecutors and courts should question whether a juror has participated in any iteration of juror manipulation and instantly dismiss the juror if the answer is yes.
