My apologies for my short comments today. I will be baking most of the day, from scratch, an apple cinnamon bundt cake with maple syrup glaze, a chocolate cream pie (an old Hershey cookbook recipe) with real whipped cream and semisweet shavings on top and a fudgy, chocolate sheet cake with chocolate frosting for a volunteer firefighter’s fund raiser. They will be auctioned off and all the local churches in the little town my church is in will be giving a concert as well. It will be some wonderful praise and worship music this evening. I am looking forward to it.

I haven’t baked a cake in ages because it is just the two of is; but now and again I will bake a pie which we eat a slice of each night while were watching BritBox of Acorn faves for the umpteenth time because nothing produced today is enjoyable.
At the moment we are trying to leave a bit of time pass before we dive in once more into All Creatures Great and Small…but it’s hard.
Interestingly, we had a wonderful personal reply from Samuel West who portrays Siegfried Farnon (son of the superb late actor Timothy West and his wife, the recently late Prunella Scales of many productions but best known for her “Sybil” in “Fawlty Towers”). We had left a message for him telling him how much we enjoyed ACGaS and why…we were shocked to see he didn’t answer on the site where replies show up, but messaged us privately. Which was lovely 😌💕

Pat, I watched a speed up video yesterday of quite a few indoor cats on a room with sun streaming in through a set of windows. It was time lapsed so I could see the sunlight on its way through the day.
Every cat sought out the sun, and when it moved and they were no longer on it, they all moved as one to the place it was. On and on and on like that until it disc-appeared (as my then four year old granddaughter pronounced it).
Just had a thought…and OH LOOK!!! I found it!! 😺

will provide the calming moments I really need. She’s right of course . . . I so enjoy these precious moments of human/kitty solace.
I’ve commented before how, once she moved beyond her feral stage, she began looking after me. Is that really a “thing” . . . do cats really “look after” their people? Heck, I don’t know. But when she jumps into my lap like she did awhile ago, it sure feels like it. And that’s good enough for me. Be well, dear Bet. It’s always great hearing from you. 🙂

Freedom means the freedom to be perverted, stupid, obnoxious, and an utterly licentious barbarian—but not infringe on others’ rights. Jesus never forced anyone to believe and practice what He taught, and we shouldn’t either.
The problem is that it isn’t what the Left believes. They don’t believe in freedom; they believe in tyranny, which means they get to practice whatever they want to, and they get to ram it down our throats and we must approve of it, not condemn it, and pay for it. They want to control the government forever, and they demand we either cower into accepting their decadence and tyranny, or they’ll imprison or kill us if we cause too much trouble.

Unsure what to think of the Dow hitting 50+ today. Once again the roaring twenties are upon us.
Extreme volatility lately in the financial markets. Dow 50,000 plus is a measurement in dollars of the Dow stocks value. If you look at a chart (Google “Macrotrends”) you will see that the value of the Dow has swung wildly over time when measured in Gold, not dollars. Some reversal points in the chart include Feb 80 – 1.30, July 99 – 41.6, July 2011 7.5, Aug 2018 – 21.5, Feb 2026 – 10.0. The ratio is the number of ounces of gold needed to be equal to the value of the Dow at a given date. In Feb of 1980 that value was 1.3 ounces of gold. In July of 1999 the value was 41.6 ounces of gold. Today it is 10 ounces of gold. The dollar is depreciating and the government and Federal Reserve state that is normal, targeting two percent inflation as okay and what we should strive to reach.
Stocked up on firewood in the house from the rack I filled next to the sliding glass door. Still 30′ with a foot of snow cover between the sliding glass door and my main firewood storage under the lean-to on the back of the old garage. Beginning to wonder if my emergency supply is going to hold out until the snow is gone.
I used to put up 14 cords of wood each year. Back in the day it was cheaper. That is no longer the case. $120 per cord of 101″ logs that still needed to be cut, split and dried. The wood processed during the summer was intended for next years winter because it needed to dry. Couple of times I had to dip into partially dried wood to keep the house warm. I could get away with it because I have an outside wood boiler that wasn’t susceptible to chimney fires.
Mine is just for a fireplace insert. I only burn when the temp will be staying below freezing. Otherwise it’ll run you out of the living room and sun room.
Our NG bill was $138.75 last month. And that includes heating the garage.

I’m down to about 2 weeks worth firewood. This week predicted to be fairly moderate so will be scouring the wood lot for any standing dead wood that’s seasoned enough to burn well. May also try scouting a neighbor’s land that was timbered two years ago. May be some seasoned dead stuff left over from the select cutting operation. The footing is dangerous right at the moment to be running a chainsaw; packed hard sleet that re-freezes nightly.
Love to be able to share some of our firewood with my Treeper friends – though you might have to help with the splitting – we’ve got a diesel log splitter, but it’s been sitting idle for a while.
Even here, we’ve used a fair amount of mesquite mostly – can’t imagine how much you have needed in other parts of the country.
Had to give up manual splitting long ago. 😕
This time in 1982
I was in the Green Mountains of Vermont going through my first winter warfare training on a team in 10th SFG. Fifteen days of shooting, moving, communicating, and living out in the elements.
It never got above 0 F the whole time and one night it got down to -30 F.
We moved on skis using skins to climb in them.
To bivouac we traversed up the side of a mountain with our last traverse trail running under where we would set up. We had to dig snow to make a level platform to set up our two man tents. We had of SF looking for us and the most likely way they would find us was following our trail in the snow so by making the trail pass below our bivouac site and be easy to ambush.
We frequently laid false trails and intentionally moved over terrain that may be dangerous to make it more difficult to trail us. For example we came across a place where a massive number of trees had been felled over a deep gorge laying in random directions forming a kind of bridge. There were plenty of gaps where a man could fall through. We worked our way right over that instead of trying to go around it.
No fires, only a small stove, one for each two men, and always set up in a hole dug in the snow and only used during daylight hours.
A couple times we found creeks with water running under the ice but most of our water came from melting snow or ice. Dehydration is a real threat in such conditions with heavy physical activity and no easy access for water so each day when we had to stop to make commo we had the stoves busy melting snow or ice to refill our canteens. That would also be the one time each day when we could heat up something to eat.
Canteens had to be carried in the chest pockets of our Gortex parka while moving and at night went into the sleeping bag with you. As a medic I had IV fluids and various liquid medications and ointments. All of those were kept close to my body and went into the sleeping bag with me at night.
One’s feet would sweat. We would change socks during our daily commo stop and pin the sweat soaked socks on our uniform next to our body to dry. Our leather Hagwag 3/4 shank mountaineering boots were used as a pillow because they would freeze solid at night without some body heat keeping them at least partially thawed.
Being new and for the first time moving over such terrain on skis with 80 lbs or so of weapons, ammo, medical supplies, and all the stuff needed to survive in such conditions I had the toughest time, falling frequently. Each time taking off my ruck, getting up, putting back on a ski, and putting the ruck back on.
Later years I was the one standing around waiting for some newbe to do those things.
That first annual winter warfare training was tough. I was in shape but lost 15 lb.
Note. The climbing skins we used on our alpine touring skis were not the adhesive type you see today. They hook over the shovel, had a velcro band that held them just in front of the binding, and then had tension strap that came off the end at the tail of the ski that attached to the binding. I cannot find a youtube video which shows using those type of climbing skins.

COMMENTARY FOR PSALMS 27
The psalmist’s faith. (1-6) His desire toward God, and expectation from him. (7-14)
1-6 The Lord, who is the believer’s light, is the strength of his life; not only by whom, but in whom he lives and moves. In God let us strengthen ourselves. The gracious presence of God, his power, his promise, his readiness to hear prayer, the witness of his Spirit in the hearts of his people; these are the secret of his tabernacle, and in these the saints find cause for that holy security and peace of mind in which they dwell at ease. The psalmist prays for constant communion with God in holy ordinances. All God’s children desire to dwell in their Father’s house. Not to sojourn there as a wayfaring man, to tarry but for a night; or to dwell there for a time only, as the servant that abides not in the house for ever; but to dwell there all the days of their life, as children with a father. Do we hope that the praising of God will be the blessedness of our eternity? Surely then we ought to make it the business of our time. This he had at heart more than any thing. Whatever the Christian is as to this life, he considers the favour and service of God as the one thing needful. This he desires, prays for and seeks after, and in it he rejoices.
7-14 Wherever the believer is, he can find a way to the throne of grace by prayer. God calls us by his Spirit, by his word, by his worship, and by special providences, merciful and afflicting. When we are foolishly making court to lying vanities, God is, in love to us, calling us to seek our own mercies in him. The call is general, “Seek ye my face;” but we must apply it to ourselves, “I will seek it.” The word does us no good, when we do not ourselves accept the exhortation: a gracious heart readily answers to the call of a gracious God, being made willing in the day of his power. The psalmist requests the favour of the Lord; the continuance of his presence with him; the benefit of Divine guidance, and the benefit of Divine protection. God’s time to help those that trust in him, is, when all other helpers fail. He is a surer and better Friend than earthly parents are, or can be. What was the belief which supported the psalmist? That he should see the goodness of the Lord. There is nothing like the believing hope of eternal life, the foresights of that glory, and foretastes of those pleasures, to keep us from fainting under all calamities. In the mean time he should be strengthened to bear up under his burdens. Let us look unto the suffering Saviour, and pray in faith, not to be delivered into the hands of our enemies. Let us encourage each other to wait on the Lord, with patient expectation, and fervent prayer.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

We walk by the grace of God, his grace removed we wither and die.
That is what we see today. The source of our life denied.
We are always one step from destruction, it is undeserved mercy that sustains us. Ignorance is not a reason for exception.
Do not look to this world for comfort. To focus on the downfall of men creates more of the same. God is perfection, focus on him.
If an individual fall we all fall. The angels rejoice for one soul redeemed. We are not separate but united as one body. Eternity is only joyful if we are united. Hell is separation from God and his creation.
As believers we are to give freely the gospel, that salvation may be accepted by those lost. In that moment our lords promise is his presence. Great joy comes when you are united with your source.

Biography: Harvey S. Firestone was an American businessman known for founding the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Born in Ohio, he was early to recognize the potential for automobile tires and became a key figure in the burgeoning industry.
After high school, Firestone first worked at the Columbus Buggy Company. He then launched his own business in 1890, producing rubber tires for carriages. By 1900, Firestone saw the opportunity in automobile tires and established the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.
Firestone was part of “The Vagabonds,” a group of American industry leaders including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and others, who would vacation and collaborate professionally. He collaborated with Samuel Crowther to write “Men and Rubber: The Story of Business” in 1926, in which he reflects on Ford and Edison, considering the causes of their success.
His contributions to industry and education are commemorated in the Firestone Library at Princeton University, among other memorials. The Harvey S. Firestone Memorial was dedicated in Akron, Ohio, in 1950. Firestone was posthumously honored with inductions into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2013.

American author and aviator (Gift from the Sea), dies of a stroke at 94
Biography: Anne Morrow Lindbergh is a renowned 20th century aviator and author. She was born in 1906 in Englewood, New Jersey, to a wealthy and influential family. She attended Smith College and graduated with a degree in history in 1928.
Anne met famed aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1927 at a dinner party, and the two were married in 1929. Anne accompanied Charles on several of his famous flights and earned her own pilot’s license in 1930. In 1932, the Lindberghs famously became parents to the first child born of a trans-Atlantic flight.
Anne wrote several books during her lifetime, including ‘Gift from the Sea’ and ‘North to the Orient’. She also wrote a detailed diary of her experiences, which was later published as ‘Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead’.
It may be Caturday but this guy deserves special mention.

She said my dog looked “dangerous.” She asked why a German Shepherd like this was even allowed on a plane. Ma’am, let me introduce you to Duke.
That “threatening” animal spent six years deployed with Marine Special Operations. He’s a certified Multi-Purpose Canine. While most people run away from danger, Duke runs toward it.
His resume: Tracking high-value targets. Detecting explosives before they turn into funerals. Shot twice in the line of duty. That scar on his shoulder? Shrapnel from an IED in Helmand Province. Despite being wounded and bleeding, Duke located four more devices in that same area to keep his team safe. The limp you’re staring at?
He took multiple rounds during an ambush to save his handler. Because of him, a 22-year-old Marine got to go home to his daughter. Duke has a Navy Commendation Medal. He has a Purple Heart. He is credited with saving over 40 American lives.
And the most important stat? Zero bite incidents. The only thing Duke has ever snapped at were threats trying to harm our troops.
So no, I won’t be moving seats. But you are more than welcome to lean over and thank him for his service.
