My good friend’s daughter, in her 40s, with a PhD was laid off a few years ago from her research job, and still has been unable to find another one. Has been living off her severance, unemployment, and inheritance from her grandparents. She has other PhD friend’s who have had to take office jobs not earning much.

My hubby has a high school diploma.
He became Vice President of a manufacturing company, second only to the owner.
He interviewed people to fill the Purchasing Agent job, a job where they’d need to be able to figure out things like how many 3″x3″ widgets can be made out of an 8’x4′ piece of plywood.
Hubby put together a simple, I mean really simple, test each applicant was required to complete, and after 3 people with college degrees in mathematics failed the test — he no longer required the applicants to have college degrees.

I worked for a major paper company back in the 70’s to the 90’s. The young engineers were some of the most stupid people I have ever known. To save money they hired from the bottom third of the class. They also had some foreign engineers that couldn’t do anything, but were needed to meet quotas as as they had a lot of government contracts. The few good engineers were older guys hired from other companies. Then I got into the electric power industry and those people were by and large top notch.

Different businesses do things differently. Sometimes there is no “engineer,” and the production people — no matter their level — are the last people to calculate price per unit.
So a Purchasing Agent, or Buyer, may often do that job, as was the case when my husband was hiring someone for that job.

Most of the younger guys I worked with were eligible for
retirement at 38-41 years old. They still had children at home
and health insurance costs alone are enough to…break the bank.
Most have started their second careers in the same type field –
but different in many ways, and are now working on their second
retirement income. The foundation of their first career enables them
to transition into another with relative ease. 👏
And a lot of them served in the National Guard, I am thinking
they may be getting some type of benefits from that also!

The world population is said to be 6-8% Caucasian; I recently saw someone claim it was 15%, definitely an outlier.

So, if a State Government insists on not complying with the Terms and conditions of the FEDERAL Grant … the Federal Agency administering a FEDERAL Grant can deny ALL funds to the intended recipient of that Grant.
The responsibility is now directly in the court of the House and Senate Leadership that authorizes the funds for the Grants, to add the appropriate requirements to the funding Bills they pass.
The Executive Branch entity administering a Federal Grant can also ADD accountability rules to the Grants as they are delivered to the States per their legal and constitutional responsibility to safeguard public funds.

My No. 1 rule, ‘If a car could come around the corner/over the bridge, pull out of a yard…etc, it will’.
That’s ’saved me so many times’.
Then there’s the one my driving instructor taught me, ‘the problem in front of you will solve itself’ (especially useful tailing tractors towing 30ft ploughs, or potato picking machines.
Another good rule – if they want the road, let them have it.
I have avoided 3 head-on collisions in the last 13 years or so by just letting them have the road in my lane. That saved my life 3 times, my sister’s twice, a family friend once, and about 8 baby goats. I’m good at avoiding the oncoming traffic by 4-6 inches on the left and the ditch on the right by about the same amount.
From back in the day when they were all RWD, and Firestone would “pay the tow” …
Getting a car moving is easy. Getting them to stop is the hard part.
Driving a motor vehicle in snow is like piloting a boat. Anyone who has operated a boat will understand.
Nothing ever stops on a dime in the water. You are constantly managing drifting and momentum, and always plan on a wide berth.

luckily made it, was FWD, but i could use lower gears as needed.
when in Raleigh, people have the righteous common sense to stay home
if snow is predicted or wet roads with temps below freezing

because they know they don’t do well in those rare conditions.
but i frequently see a problem nowadays with lots of “new” drivers
from Central and South America, or the Middle East, or the Caribbean

One winter the weather was really bad and my husband and I had to drive from Duluth to St. Paul down Interstate 35.
The road hadn’t been plowed yet and the snow was literally rubbing the bottom of our car as we slowly drove along.
There were only two narrow tracks that went almost the entire 150 miles south that day, and one by one we all stayed in those tracks — no one even tried to speed by.
At least that’s one good thing Minnesotans have going for us, we sometimes do the right thing while trying to get home safely.
Judgement these days seems to have left the room.
Around here, no one knows how to drive in snow. While I was trying to inch my way home, I found myself at the top of a short hill and wondered why there seemed to be a line of cars parked beside the road. Then, the car in front of me started down, started to slide, hit his brakes, and wound up sliding neatly beside the other cars. I was next. I started down, started to slide, didn’t hit the brakes, and soon was on my way.
One of the problems is the 4WD that allows people to go faster, but going faster means longer stopping times. It also means if you skid off a road you will be farther from the road surface, which means your frame hung up and higher towing fees.
I grew up and live in Northern Wisconsin and have plenty of experience in snow and ice. We learned on frozen lakes by deliberately skidding vehicles in open areas. Pretty soon handling skids was instinct not thinking. I also drive a 4WD but slow down. My thinking is no matter how much longer it takes me to get home it will be much sooner than going in the ditch or having an accident, or never getting home at all.

And 12 is to keep a safe distance from trucks, they can go sideways fast and take a lot longer to stop. Not just Semis but all the straight or boxtrucks as well. I drove a box truck in Minneapolis for 25 years and never had an accident in the snow. I had some very close calls by inept drivers but thank the Lord I escaped. I dreaded snow storms and my blood pressure was always high during them. Now I look out the window and enjoy watching the snow.
My British husband who has taught many to drive…cars, buses, big trucks..and himself a driver of all three over long distances including the European continent, has always driloed into our grands to keep themselves far behind the larger vehicles and not behind them. Rather in a position so the operators of these beasts can see them in their side mirrors.

Growing up in the great white north (Michigan), I learned when I move to the DC and Texas that they have no clue on how to drive in snow. Everyone else is dangerous. So…….see rule 1 and stay at home.
Hubby and I grew up in Minnesota and thought we knew about driving in snow.
Then one of my sisters moved to Marquette, Michigan.
I think she said their usual snowfall per year was over 100″.
There were a few times when we were the ONLY people driving on 28/41 between Superior, Wisconsin and Marquette due to the heavy snowfall. Hubby kept his foot on the gas, not going fast, but not wanting to get stuck in the deep snow, and stayed in the middle of the trees on both sides, since the road was gone!
Michigan truly is the great white north!
If you haven’t been on the UP’s North shore of Lake Superiors in winter you haven’t experienced deep snow. Houghton, Hancock, Ishpeming, Negaunee and Marquette.

Been there, done that too. It’s scary. Fortunately I was stopped at a light.
I was on a clover leaf getting off the highway, thinking there was no one on the road I was going onto.
But unlike the drivers of today that do not bother to check the lane they are going into, I still turned my head and looked to the left before actually moving that way.
And there it was, a semi truck at my back bumper, barreling down the road.
That’s when I learned that if you slam on your breaks all the snow on the top of your car will be on your windshield and you won’t be able to see a thing in front of you.
Yes, that was scary, and from that time forward I never drove anywhere without first pushing all the snow off the top of my car.
I’d guess after being scared, even at a stop light, you probably do the same thing.
