I lived in New Jersey for a while and now live in Utah. Made the mistake of going back there one Christmas. It was so cold, I thought my face would crack.
Come on over to the end of Lake Erie and south of Lake Ontario. Lake effect is the operative word. Amazing situation when a band 1 mile wide drops several feet under its clouds and nothing outside the band. Fascinating to observe.
Yes, south is nice but I do prefer some changes in seasons. A cold brisk fall morning is delightful in limited doses. I would imagine states like Kentucky, TN, VA, the Carolinas would be more to my liking if I ever could move south. The bugs, snakes, alligators and heat are another thing I pause about. But visiting for several months a year would be nice when it’s blowing snow clouds and -1 here in January and February.

One stop in NW CT last night at the TravelAmerica (TA) was $5.49 for diesel and $4.99 at Loves.
Northern VA is $3.49.
$2.46 in eastern suburbs of Cincinnati.
Unfortunately those prices do not reflect the entire country. It’s not just NY but many blue states that refuse to lower prices, even if we have high state tax.

Funny thing about ‘forums’ in Doha they always seem to fill up with Americans right when Washington starts tightening the screws back home.

Yes, Congress is finally admitting those vetting gaps were real.

Good morning.
I just watched a video on the Neutrality Studies youtube channel and thought I’d share a few impressions.
It’s my first exposure to David T. Pyne, whose substack lists him as “Deputy Executive Director of the Task Force on National & Homeland Security; Former US Army HQ Staff Officer; Published National Security Strategist & Military Historian, Russia & Nuclear Weapons Expert”
Pyne was commenting on the Ukraine peace proposal, and one thing that immediately jumped out at me was that he seems to have a pretty low opinion of Rubio and some other Trump picks:
“The problem is, you know, here in the US there’s a saying that Personnel is Policy.
And as I wrote in my Real War substack, it’s basically return of the neocons, because President Trump made the mistake of appointing Rubio as as Secretary of State, Ratcliffe as CIA Director, Mike Waltz as National Security Adviser, and Keith Kellogg as Special Envoy to Russia.
You know, all those are folks that have advised him to do the wrong thing. So he comes up with great plans, with great fanfare sometimes, and then there’s no follow through. So it looks to the outside neutral observer that US foreign policy is quite bipolar because it swings from one side, America first pro peace, then it’s pro-war, Ukraine first or Israel first. And I think that explains the swings.”
Pyne also mentioned that the EU counter-proposal was an unserious one, most likely being used to derail the peace process than anything else. “I think President Trump would be wise to respond by cutting off all negotiations with the EU and and Ukraine and and just sign a separate piece with the Kremlin.”
[Note: I’ll admit this was a new idea to me, and I don’t really know how a “separate peace” would work. Added to my lengthy List of Things to Research]
Pyne mentioned that he thought the neocon faction might be diminishing a little currently, noting that Rubio hasn’t been as prominent lately but that he still has multiple roles in the administration.
Pyne thought the person who leaked the Ukraine peace plan might be Keith Kellogg:
“The Axios article was leaked with the 28 point peace plan, and Witkoff responded on X saying ‘this wasn’t me that leaked it. It was K.’ And a lot of people have assumed that meant Kyril Demetriov.
But actually, the Russians aren’t in the business of leaking anything when it comes to diplomatic negotiations. And so, I think it’s more likely that it was Keith Kellogg. And Keith Kellogg resigned, you know, basically tenered his resignation just mere hoursafter the leak occurred.
I think that Kellogg is really a Zelensky ally, repeating Ukrainian propaganda talking points. And I think he was frustrated that he was locked out of this negotiation, and he leaked the proposal because he opposed it. He wanted his fellow neocons to be aware of it, and perhaps Ukraine as well.”
Finally, Pyne discussed Venzeula a bit and said that Rubio got in the way of negotiations with Maduro:
“The Trump administration has been carrying out talks with the Maduro regime, and those talks were essentially to get Maduro to go into exile.
The US would essentially pay Maduro a certain amount of money, perhaps 50 million, 100 million and provide certain asurances that would would allow him to go into exile in the country of his choice.
The issue was that Maduro made a condition that the Opposition leader could could not be his successor. It had to be someone within his regime, and he wanted it to be the current Venezuelan Defense Minister.
In return, it was agreed that the US would essentially have predominant rights with regards to Venezuelan oil and rare earth minerals.
So that deal was being negotiated by Richard Grenell, and unfortunately, Rubio torpedoed that that deal.
There’s also rumors that Russia and China didn’t want the deal to happen and were refusing to give Maduro asylum in in Russia and China. And, reportedly, they they would would like the US to get bogged down in fighting in Venezuela. And they’ve dispatched a Russian general to help organize an insurgency that could bog down the US
in kind of a Latin American Vietnam over a period of many months or perhaps even years.”

Apparently Kellogg is expected to leave his post in January 2026 “according to multiple sources.” While the White House has not provided detailed reasons for his departure, it has been reported that Kellogg informed associates of his plans to step down around that time. His role as special presidential envoy is a temporary designation, and such positions theoretically require Senate confirmation to continue beyond 360 days, which may contribute to the timing of his exit.
As of now, there is no official White House press release or public statement confirming Dan Driscoll’s formal appointment as special envoy for Ukraine.
