Serious street rod, annie. Thanks for posting. In sociology class I used to use street racing culture as an example of deviant behavior—formally defined as marked social differntiation.
I talked about how street racing grew out of the post-world-war 2 period. There were established traditions about street racing (see the movie 2 Lane Blacktop). Locally, and in most urban areas, there were tacit agreements between street racers and the police. The cops would basically leave the racers alone so long as nobody got killed and they raced in largely unobserved places.
I pointed out in class that this was a long standing tradition dating back at least to the early 50’s. The cops were conspicuously quiet about street racing . . .
And every time I taught this component, after class I’d have one or two students—street racers—tell me where the next races were going to be held. 🙂

Now that the statute of limitations has passed, we can all admit to our juvenile delinquent past. Hahaha Some friends and I managed to pull a prank which actually made the CBS evening news (national, not local). Fortunately, we had not yet been caught so only the prank and not the perpetrators was mentioned. Another group in high school managed to find a way into the school building on a weekend and we shuffled ALL of the desk drawers from every desk. In other words, no desk had its original drawers in it on Monday morning when the teachers opened them. (never got identified on that one either)
In 2 Lane the Dennis Wilson and James Taylor characters were street-racers. They held themselves apart from mere “pranksters” (!!!). This distinction continues to this day. The guys doing do-nuts in the middle of city streets are a different subculture entirely and rarely even speak. The two groups actually don’t have much in common. Annie’s Chevvy street rod is a good example. You won’t see a car like that “doing do-nuts”. It’s a street-rod, more at home where there is 2am back-road drag races.

Ya know, monti you’ve given me a pause . . . I haven’t done any fieldwork since I retired awhile back. There has been a sea-change in car culture. Hoonigan culture didn’t exist way back when.
Had an interesting conversation about this with a 30 something neighbor. We’ve been comparing notes. He is very much attracted to hoonigan culture—thinks the do-nut car-antics are cool. I’ve realized that there is now a pretty significant generational difference. In the minds of many hoonigan enthusiasts, do-nuts antics are cool while midnite drag racing on obscure straight stretches is old fashioned. 2 Lane is still a great film. 🙂
We have some local hooligans (not a mis-spelling) who do donuts in rural intersections and different places.
To me they’re just dangerous and very un-cool. Street racers sometimes endanger everyone late night with very high speed runs more like road racing than old style drag cars.
The bottom line Garrison is that higher horse power is easily obtainable and you can buy more horses now off the shelf than what took lots of effort and knowledge to obtain in the 60s/70s/80s.
Where 400 horses used to be a stomping machine now its nothing to brag about. Takes a lot of the mystic and the lore out of what it used to mean to have a “hot” car.

Biography: Art Carney is best known for his role as Ed Norton in the television series “The Honeymooners” (1955-1956), for which he was granted an Honorary Life Membership by The Florida Water and Sewage Works Operators Association in 1954. He also won an Academy Award for Best Actor and six Emmy Awards during his career.
Carney began his entertainment career in the 1930s as a comic singer and mimic on radio. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and was wounded in the leg during World War II, which left him with a lifelong limp. After the war, Carney transitioned to television where he gained fame alongside Jackie Gleason in “The Honeymooners.”

I hit a patch once on the highway in SE Idaho in my Isuzu Rodeo. Not fun.
That driver should have parked it up instead of taking video. Never ever fool around on black ice.
A friend leaving on a business trip to Colorado spoke of picking up groceries in Gunnison, Co on the way to the work site in Crested Butte, Co. I replied that he was going through one of the coldest spots in Colorado high country. He replied that, “no Crested Butte was higher in elevation and therefore would be colder temperatures there.”
I had to explain that everyone in Colorado knows Gunnison constantly records some of the lowest temps in the state for a larger mountain community. Gunnison is surrounded by large drainage basins which are surrounded by a lot of high peaks. What happens to cold air in the mountains? It flows downhill like water. All those rivers of cold air coming out of locations like Taylor park and down off the mountain peaks funnel down through Gunnison and result in low temperatures.
In an extreme example like Greenland they have tremendous winds caused by the heavy cold air blasting down to the coasts off the higher interior ice caps.
How does this weather trivia become useful? Well one should choose their campsite not right next to the babbling brook but higher up the side of a mountain valley if one wishes to be warmer and have less breeze. Farmers know to locate orchards and vineyards up on the sides instead of down in “the bottomland” to avoid frost kills of fruit.
When its really cold in Colorado (below 10 degrees to negative 10 or so) sometimes Denver/Colorado Springs/Fort Collins will record lower temperatures than at the 8,500 foot levels and above. The opposite is of course true the rest of the time, the mountains will be cooler sometimes a great deal cooler than down on the high plains. Another weather trivia for the high country like Colorado is that it can snow and be chilly in the morning and due to dry air and sun the snow will be gone the streets dry before noon.

Edward “Butch” O’Hare would go on to take on 6 Japanese Betty bombers closing in on the USS Lexington and was credited with downing five of them. He in his F4F Wildcat were all that stood between the bomber formation and the carrier because his wingman’s guns had jamed. He became and ACE in one flight and the first Naval Aviator of WW II to received the CMOH.

Hello all, I want to share a recipe I made up recently in time for Thanksgiving. My local chain grocery is selling fresh corn 4 for $1 so I’m going to get 8 and pre-prep my contribution to dinner and stash it in the freezer until the day before. I’m going just stash the prepped corn and broth in the freezer – this recipe complete loses some flavors after freezing.
7 C’s Corn Chowder
Corn, celery, green curry leaves, chicken broth, chayote, coconut milk, toasted coriander. Plus ginger, garlic, onion, toasted mustard seeds and coconut oil.
Chayote seems out of season so I’m going to substitute traditional potatoes. I just taste and test as I go so amounts aren’t firm but 8 ears of corn helps make a good amount for sharing. I clean the corn and lightly roast in the oven. After it cools cut the corn off the cob and set aside. Boil the clean silk, cobs and husks in chicken broth until all the flavor goes into the broth. Drain and discard. ( I make a strong chicken broth from the bones.) At this point I’m going to put the corn kernels and the broth in the freezer for a week and 1/2.
The other ingredients are like making a standard stew or chowder. I love the fresh green curry leaves with corn and they are safe and healthy to eat but some people just think that they shouldn’t be left in so I take it out for them. Leftover leaves can be kept in the freezer and used for other recipes or tea.
Coriander gets toasted to bring out the flavor and then powdered with mortar and pestle. This ingredient doesn’t hold its flavor long so best to do it the day of.
Chayote is a wonderful mild flavored fruit that is used as a vegetable. You don’t have to peel it and the soft pit can go in as well. It’s a nutritional powerhouse which is amazing considering the delicate flavor. I’m just not seeing any right now. So potatoes.
Toasted mustard seeds are exquisite and have an addicting nutty flavor.
If you’re into using all of the animal you can chop up the chicken skin into tiny pieces and fry the fat out of them until they’re crispy then soak any remaining fat out by rolling in a kitchen towel. They can be served on the side to be sprinkled just prior to eating kind of like tiny croutons.
I use a can of whole coconut milk.
Many people think that they hate coconut but are surprised when they have it in a savory recipe – they usually LOVE it!

COMMENTARY FOR JAMES 1
“This epistle of James is one of the most instructive writings in the New Testament. Being chiefly directed against particular errors at that time brought in among the Jewish Christians, it does not contain the same full doctrinal statements as the other epistles, but it presents an admirable summary of the practical duties of all believers. The leading truths of Christianity are set forth throughout; and on attentive consideration, it will be found entirely to agree with St. Paul’s statements concerning grace and justification, while it abounds with earnest exhortations to the patience of hope and obedience of faith and love, interspersed with warnings, reproofs, and encouragements, according to the characters addressed. The truths laid down are very serious, and necessary to be maintained; and the rules for practice ought to be observed in all times. In Christ there are no dead and sapless branches, faith is not an idle grace; wherever it is, it brings forth fruit in works.How to apply to God under troubles, and how to behave in prosperous and in adverse circumstances. What the sun is in nature, God is in grace, providence, and glory; and infinitely more. As every good gift is from God, so particularly our being born again, and all its holy, happy consequences come from him. A true Christian becomes as different a person from what he was before the renewing influences of Divine grace, as if he were formed over again. We should devote all our faculties to God’s service, that we may be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.”

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

In my youth I wanted to be an artist. Alas, I lack the talent it takes to paint ‘the treeness of trees’, or the essence of beauty. I considered myself a ‘faithful renderer’ – photography is a better media for that.
But I never lost an appreciation for talent.

Oh, Peace, you do not offend.
What any of can see differs from what others can see. Perhaps one of the greatest visuals available to us is how van Gogh’s painting ‘evolved’ over time. I once read a guess .. cataracts. I thought ‘maybe’
In my case each eye has a different problem. Miraculously, my brain puts an image before me. Because macular destroys the ability to focus, to see details, faces (for instance) are hard to see – tho the whole colorful world is visible.
Reading is interesting. the lines in paragraphs (multi line blocks) don’t line up – and they ‘wave’. I cheer the treehouse admonition to break posts into small – even single sentence – blocks. I abandon many a post …
Even many of your glorious posted works of art are a challenge. I do best with simple and contrasting color images.
That said – I thank God every moment of every day that I can see. As you know, ‘seeing’ is more than visual sight.

I ground up leaves yesterday. I was on the zero turn for 3 hours and the acre was nearly leaf free.
This morning you. Couldn’t tell I done it out front where the big silver maple over hangs the driveway.
But less to do when I do the final mowing to grind leaves after the last of them are down.

Sunday afternoon couch session (weather is gloomy) so got the old playlist on and the track (below)
came up – reminded me of the pic Betsy posted of the galaxies in the universe – grains of sand. Always mystified me as to why it (the Universe) has to be so big and diverse. One would think if it was all about us little creatures, just the Milky Way would have been more than sufficient.
So what’s the deal?? Are there millions (Billions) of “us” scattered all over (maybe an arm/head/tail or two extra) ?? or is the whole elaborate show just for us – even though we can’t see it??
No way the Creator does things for no reason, so I’m pretty open for an explanation. My homeless friend has a rather interesting theory. (years of cold, isolation, and boredom probably does this).
Anyway in his “weird” quantum entanglement, black and white hole, worm infested, dragon and snake, greys, whites and blacks (possible he’s describing his living quarters) populated universe, it’s all part of our endless “migration” to a higher and higher state of unity with God. Time is not what we think it is, and bad things can happen when we “mess” with space – basically because we’re clueless as to what is actually going on, and are, if we continue in our sinful ways certainly going to attract the attention of not so friendly “powers”. (not quite sure if they’re greys, whites or blacks).
The comforting news fortunately is that All and every is under the same Creator – with the same moral “rules” consistent throughout. And this is why he suffers (last test before his next migration) -out of the reincarnation Earth cycle.
My closing is usually along the line of – That’s great, I can buy anythings possible, we really don’t understand jack squat when it comes to a hundred million light years and beyond and beyond, who knows??. God is still in charge right – now how do we fix the problems with our spouses, kids, and fellow beings so that at least our little stay here is as pleasant as possible.???

Just had to re-install brave and linux on my chromebook. Lost everything when I miss hit the synch upon starting up a replacement android cell phone.
I don’t synch anything.
I detest google and hate the selective searches which shadow you out. I don’t do anything I don’t have to on google.
Finally brave runs CTH beautifully and fast with no garfs and hiccups from interrupting ads.
Sorry, rant over now…..hard not to rant when had to give up 35 minutes of my life to reset everything back to an actual usable

Evening Prayer For Forgiveness
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me through this day and Lord, forgive me for the times when I have wandered outside Your best will for me, instead of trusting You implicitly.
Thank You, that You are such a gracious Shepherd to me and that You come and rescue me even when I lose my way and stray from the path that You have laid out for me.
As I look back over today, I know Lord that there were things that I should have said and done differently, and times when I reacted in a manner that was not honouring Your holy name. Forgive me I pray, but thank You, Father, that You always faithfully prepared to gently bring me back to Yourself.
Give me a good night’s sleep I pray, knowing that there is no condemnation because I am in Christ, and may I wake up in the morning refreshed and ready to do Your will. In Jesus’ name I pray,

Heavenly Father, as I lie down to sleep tonight, I pray that You would guard my sleeping and protect my mind from wandering thoughts and unnecessary planning. Teach me to wait for Your perfect timing and not to try to plan my future in my own strength.
Lord, I know that You have scheduled every day of my life. Help me to trust You in all things and rely on You to lead me along the straight path and guide me in the direction that You would have me to go.
Give me patience to wait for Your perfect timing, and may I not trust in my own abilities and scheming, but rather rest in Your love and trust my future into Your hands.

Praise Your holy name Heavenly Father, for granting yet another day in my life and for being with me every step of the way. Thank You for the many blessings that You have provided and the love and fellowship that I have with the friends and family that in Your grace You have placed in my life.
My heart is so thankful for all the many blessings that I enjoy day by day, and today I am once again reminded that Your mercies are new every morning and Your faithfulness endures from generation to generation.
