One of the perks of working in low paying jobs was to have health care insurance. They had a huge pool, everybody was pretty young, and healthy. What was the problem? Greed.
On the topic of health insurance, they did exactly the wrong thing — by intent.
Providing health care for the uninsured without bankrupting them was an 80/20 issue. Ensuring continuity of care for those changing or between jobs also was.
The solution really should have been simple.
Modify COBRA to address those without insurance for an extended time — not affecting the rest of us
Decouple employers from a specific insurance company. Offer the same tax incentives to subsidize employee – selected insurance companies / plans. Now the relationship is between the insured and their insurer. Change jobs? Insurance company doesn’t care. Maybe this new employer pays $250/mo while the other paid $300/mo. Part of the consideration when changing jobs, only under this you don’t have to sit and go through what’s covered and not line by line like you do right now because you still have the same plan.
On top of that, they created a huge and massively expensive federal bureaucracy to manage it. No chance this was ever about mitigating cost. This was another disastrous welfare program.
Our founding was made to prevent a centralized power.
It failed.
We are in a position of false bravado.

This was enriching further…the insurance industry. Politicians do not want to address the cost of healthcare and the continued decline in services….same with homeowners and auto. The Industry needs to be taken down and remade.
Before Obamacare, when I was between jobs and freelancing, Anthem BC/BS had a very affordable HSA individual plan that IIRC was under $200/mo. It wasn’t as good as the Anthem employer plan I’d had, but it gave me discounted medical rates because I was in the Anthem network, for both routine or catastrophic coverage, and was a good safety net. Once Obamacare kicked in, individual plans like that went away. And COBRA was a joke — way too expensive when you are laid off, working sporadically, or on unemployment.
^ This. We needed access to policies for catastrophic coverage, and pay our own way, as we all used to, for regular doctor visits.
This type of coverage was removed so that we could all share in paying those regular doctor visits for those who either wouldn’t pay, couldn’t pay, or shouldn’t have even been here.
Actually, my old Anthem HSA plan covered routine visits and procedures, too. I usually ended up with a co-pay, but it was much less and very affordable than if I’d had to pay totally out of pocket. Have you looked lately at how much a “regular doctor visit” is? I am grateful to be on Medicare and a Med Sup plan G, which covers most things. But the raw totals I see on my This Is Not A Bill statements show like well over $1000 for a routine visit or checkup. It’s insane.
That’s why I used to use Urgent Care clinics when I didn’t have good insurance coverage. Visits were like the old days, like $50-75, plus any treatment or meds — very affordable, and faster than an ER visit.
I am afraid most COULDN’T pay. But the cost passed to others is catastrophic ….some paying the equivalent to 2 house notes.
“Having Insurance” has become a joke…..A joke on us. People are still going bankrupt because of healthcare cost even though they have insurance.
I don’t even pretend to understand the many issues with our medical coverage issues, but because our government is involved in regulating and managing it’s not a surprise it’s a total mess.
“We have to pass the ACA legislation to find out what’s in it” That’s just an example why it’s such a mess-It’s political solutions not practical solutions.
Seems there are just a few issues:
-General health care
-Health Care for the poor.
-Catastrophic Healthcare and Preconditions
-Insurance Options regulated by government
-Pharmaceutical cost coupled with incentives to the medical community
I’m sure this is an over simplified list, but take each and decide what drives cost, availability, etc. and solve each. This instead of some overreaching government program like the ACA that is driven by donors and lobbyists that nobody understands along with insurance options that are highly complex and poorly regulated and a medical industry that is more profit oriented than providing excellent medical care.
I guess that’s just who we are as a society-everything is political, ideological or just corrupt.
I guess I’m just getting too old to expect more from self-serving humans(?)
In the before times, before Obamacare, one could go on the very competitive open market and buy a policy structured to one’s particular needs.
Deductibles of a few hundred to maybe a thousand dollars were the norm. OOP expenses were less than 3 grand in most cases. Premiums were typically less than $400 per month.

Over a period of 12 hours between last night and this morning, the Israeli Navy took control of 41 vessels in the flotilla attempting to break the Israeli maritime blockade on the Gaza Strip, according to the military.
Forces of the Shayetet 13 naval commando unit, the Missile Ship Fleet, and Snapir harbor security unit, along with other Navy forces, were involved in intercepting the flotilla.
The six largest vessels in the flotilla were boarded first, with the smaller ones being tackled later.
Some 400 activists have been detained and brought to Ashdod Port to be deported from Israel.

I don’t think he’s tired of it, but it’s an area we he must rely on others, so that makes his info gathering and decision making all that much harder.
Another part of what he’s looking at is the big picture of health care in this country which is a huge convoluted mess. Pharma crimes is a piece of that, but only a piece ( and Secretary Kennedy may eventually address some of that as he works to straighten out government). The big bill and now setting up a system to purchase drugs online without insurance are steps in trying to improve healthcare (big picture work).
I wonder if with this shut down he will also attempt to improve healthcare — for example, maybe let providers who rely on treating illegals go bust or change their business models. For example, healthcare could be improved just by not paying for illegals.
Would be great if he could destroy obsmacare and replace it with affordable choices such as the new concierge and direct pay models and also a way to over catastrophic.
Complex systems like health demand a strategy for dealing with them and President Trump is a genius at strategizing.
I have no sense of whether Secretary Kennedy has ideas and plans in improving healthcare as a system or if he will stay focused on the government and how it hurts us.
Forgot to mention President Trump bringing back drug manufacturing to this country and no longer charging us more than other countries. My point is President Trump is working and strategizing on the big picture and thus he is improving healthcare.
Like you, I would give anything to see the pharma pay for what they did and are doing and to stop it. One point to make is we have some control. When we can, we can stop buying their crappy and even deadly product. I think some countries — maybe Japan? — are looking at refusing some of the covid drugs — can’t remember the details.
I look at it this way. Pfizer makes MANY drugs that Americans need and use on a daily basis. It is not just the clot-shot (which is now not recommended for anyone except over 65 and with a Dr’s consultation) – it is also the bringing back of manufacturing the drugs to our shores so we are not beholden to foreign entities that are not so friendly.
Pfizer won’t be the only company that joins the program.
I consider this a WIN for the USA.

The Executive Branch under Article II of the Constitution is allowed to determine how to comply with the CONGRESSIONAL Spending Authorization ACTS passed by Congress and signed into law by the President. Thus the President establishes Entities within the Executive Branch to manage the disbursing of funds … [this also explains why the CONGRESS has taken upon itself the creation of “mandated” EXECUTIVE BRANCH entities (of questionable constitutional legality, USAID being the most notorious) that require MORE Budget and places where Congress can hide their piggy banks as well as create FISCAL footholds within the Executive Branch .. that are allegedly protected by Article I Authority.]
The Executive Branch under Article II is also charged with stewardship of Federal Funds and ensuring that fraud, waste and abuse is NOT occurring. [In a CURRENT word DOGE activities.]
With shut down, President Trump is now free and in fact authorized per Article II and required by law to structure the Executive Branch entities to spend tax revenues and cash on hand in the safest most efficient manner. [i.e. consolidation of responsibilities, removal of redundancies, removal of fraud-waste-abuse, et al.]
The problem will come AFTER SHUT DOWN when the Executive Branch is SUED in Federal Courts to reopen ALL the stuff eliminated by the President’s Team … that is NO LONGER NEEDED.

A million invaders/anchors later, big money equipment/medical liability, it’s no longer feasible, though you do hear about a lot of write-offs and high end fundraisers.
When the “newcomers” to the country are said to use social benefits at over 65% it’s a death knell for the charities (from what I read the local food pantries have experienced a similar bankrupting since the corpse’s installation).
