I’m posting this article I just read over at ZH, it’s about what is going on with beef prices that are soaring to levels so insane that average families can’t even afford to buy it anymore.
The article rightly points out that the people that don’t pay much attention to politics but do eat food from grocery stores are going to be piling into the voter booths at the mid-terms because they’ve had it with food prices- and that yes, this is an emergency that need urgent attention.
The writer lays out a good plan that POTUS Must Get DONE and like tomorrow morning.
I feel like we need to get this issue onto the radar, about beef prices.
I have great concern about our families, I’m a single mother trying to feed huge teenagers right now and I can’t remember the last time I bought us steaks- it’s been that long.
The better eggs that are free range, not the cheap store brands with pale yolks, the good ones that actually have high nutritional content are still $6.00 a dozen here and they held at that price all summer when they didn’t even need to heat the building. I can’t afford that and we did used to eat a lot of eggs. My kids have been raised on way too much pork and chicken because what else can we all afford???
If you think you have trouble making ends meet, try being a single mom right now or an elderly person. We’ve got baggers at our grocery store that are in their early 90s and struggle to even stand there.
I’m also really working very hard on the schools and education disaster here in my own state.
Listen up Charlie Followers: we cannot encourage families, we cannot encourage Home Schooling when we don’t then push for policy that allows these young families to survive on a single income so that she can raise her own kids and teach them without using government schools.
It’s a full time job to raise your own kids right and we need this desperately- we’re here in this mess because we don’t have enough of this- well these food prices and a completely unaffordable cost of living is the largest reason there is a decline in the birth rates!

Beef is critical, a decent steak where we are is now about $23.00 each, I’d need three of those to feed my family, this is impossible on my budget if we want to eat for the rest of the week!

We’ve never been able to do a whole lot as far as traveling and fancy expensive outtings, but we at least ate well- now we don’t even have this.
This all needs to change urgently, we cannot grow families and improve our health as MAHA is trying to do without food prices being brought under control.

I talked to a based middle aged retired nurse who served 37 years in the meatgrinder (hats off, Aggiegirl) about AGS the other day. I also mentioned my symptoms appeared after during my Long Covid nightmare.

Not disputing your message at all, but want to point out that we Americans are conditioned, if you will, to eat large quantities of beef compared to most of the world. It’s basically the main feature of our primary meals that we supplement with other foods, salad, vegetables and starch. I was raised in a very rural area and my parents always had beef raised to be used for our consumption, so I grew up with this type of beef-centered meals.
It was only after I started traveling abroad and had the unique opportunity to live with families, I realized the vast difference in how others view beef in their diets. Most recent in my experiences staying with families is in Japan where beef is very expensive and almost considered as a “garnish” and not all that often. A piece of “good beef”, as my Japanese friend says is reserved for a special occasion or maybe a holiday treat in a restaurant. And, the Japanese are certainly not unhealthy. (Seldom drink dairy products or eat cheese, either.)
I will always remember my close Japanese friend using the word “grotesque “ to describe our Thanksgiving dinners, with the huge turkeys or the Xmas hams…proudly brought to the holiday table on an oversized platter.
I’m not sure that beef IS critical, although I get your point. Vegetarians seems to do well without it in their lives. And if it’s important to your family there are lots of ways to incorporate it in much lesser amounts and still have it your meal plan…stir fry, immediately comes to mind.
I consider myself a savvy shopper and fortunate enough to not be restricted by budget, but I do take notice of a regularly purchased item being $1 more since I last bought it, and wondering if I can substitute with something else. …whether something we’ve always eaten in the past is really worth the now increased price, etc. Things I may have discarded in the past…stale bread or leftover veggies, are now used in bread pudding or soups.
NHnative, you are working within a single person’s budget …we are working with a self-invested retirement income with literally no increase of income but steady increase in daily expenses. We both grew up in rather poor homes and know how to make cuts and still have a good life, but I do feel very sorry for young families who have not only the problems of daily expenses but also without knowing how to handle it because they’ve never had to.
