Nobody loves paying higher property taxes, but they are reasonably aligned to the value of a house.
If you live in a moderately priced house, I wouldn’t expect you to grasp this.
The value of my house will likely far outpace the overall amount I pay in property taxes in the span I own it.

A principal residence is a lousy investment. It’s merely a place to live. There’s no mathematical possibility that your house will ever be a “fabulous term investment.” I live in a lousy blue state, and I’ll never recoup what I’ve paid in property taxes.
A building is a depreciating asset as it requires maintenance for those things that eventually break and wear out.
Roofs, windows & doors, hvac, plumbing, electrical, etc. It can add up to costly repairs over the life of the building.
What appreciates in most instances of real estate (but not all) is the land, not the structure.
Pick the right parcel, in the right location, and you can do extremely well.
Regardless of what sits on it.
Property taxes are like paying rents to the state. A very unpopular, wasteful and inefficient ‘landlord’.

Property taxes are a tool used by local government to support their bloat. Local government, like the DC swamp, have too many people on their payroll to pay for this and all the projects they authorized, like the artist sculptures on public property (which are a waste of money). To support the bloat and interest on the loans for their ‘projects’ they increase the value of your property which increases your property tax. This is done with them knowing that most people will accept the increase, moan about it and not challenge it.
Houses are only a good investment if one can find a buyer when they sell it.

I was in 1st grade in 1960, only got 4 shots, (measles, mumps, diphtheria, and small pox) Never required to get another all the way through 12 grade.

Only shots I remember were smallpox and tetanus, and I think we also got an oral polio vaccine but I’m not sure.

I stumbled across this video yesterday. A couple of months ago, before finding CTH, I wouldn’t have even watched it, much less understood and been able to read between the lines of their conversation. My eyes are opening.
It’s an interview with Finnish economist Tuomas Malinen, who is concerned about how Finland is being armed to become the next Ukraine, since the CIA is failing there and is still desperate to break up Russia. Malinen believes they are trying to Trap the U.S. and NATO into war with Russia, via Finland.
Anyway, this isn’t a full transcript, but here are some interesting quotes in case you don’t have time for the whole 58-minute video (ums and stutters edited out, for the most part):

“It’s an interesting thing. Like I think I mentioned this before like about a year ago or something when when we spoke was that one of the first acts of of President Stubb was to sign a a defense treaty with Ukraine. And this was the first time we made a military treaty with a nation in a war against Russia since 1944. It was the craziest thing. Like a president, newly elected president, signs a military treaty with an enemy of Russia, our, like, next door neighbor. The rhetoric has been very aggressive towards Russia. Something we have not heard, maybe ever, during our well over 100 years of independence.”

“There is something really bad going on in the Nordics. In the worst case, this is something of a preparation for opening of of another front against Russia. That’s the absolute worst case. I mean, the fact that your president was one of the parties of the Europeans that ran to Washington Monday, two weeks ago, that was just bizarre because it was all of the big guys, right? Including the NATO general secretary, including Ursula of the EU and then the Germans, the French, the Italians. And then there was and Zelensky, of course. Why was Finland’s President invited to Washington? He even felt the urge to explain that right when he was given by Mr. Trump, by the real president of Europe. [note: I laughed aloud here, when he called Trump the real president of Europe. Laughed again after this, when Lottaz explained how Trump didn’t even recognize Stubb, but forgot who he was a second time.]
Malinen:
“So I can think of only two reasons why Alexander Stubb was there. First is what you proposed, that it’s the next Zelinski, basically, or in the worst case, so the war would be coming here. The second one is that I have been getting really really conspirational of late, but I just think there is a very dark, like, forces on the move in Europe, like there were in 1930s and 1940s, which are pushing for this. …In this group, I call them the European coalition for war, which I think is conspiration and there’s something behind it. …Stubb has become something of a leading figure in this conspiracy, by agreement of I don’t know who.”
Lottaz:
“Finland of course has I think, of all the EU states, it has the longest border, land border with Russia. It is militarily a very very challenging terrain, and it is also fortified, now that you have, I think, 15 US military bases. You have a base agreement with with the US. So in a sense, if you want to entrap the United States in Europe, doing it in a place that already has US troops and is part of NATO would be easier to do than in a place like Ukraine that doesn’t.”

So, and Finland is now a member of NATO. So, if you actually provoke anything through Finland, then you’re inside what NATO obviously said and the Germans and the French and the Italians have said they they actively don’t want. You would have a direct war. There cannot be any other logic than preparation for war. I think it was May or something like that our military announced that it will increase our reserve from 325,000 men to 1 million coming into, what is it, 2032. About five or seven years time. And this is like, we haven’t had this thing since I think 1941. …If you’re going to make peace, you don’t need 1 million, 1/5th of the population, in arms.” [Here was another eye-opener for me…I had no idea Finland was going to commit a full fifth of its population to military service]
Malinen:
“Our current minister of foreign affairs, Elena Valon, for several years, five years actually, was quite close to the leadership of coalition party, and it shook me to the core how incompetent those people are. And I know, almost for certain, that President Alexander Stubb is a narcissist, from my friends who have worked under him. So these are not competent people, in a sense, but I think they are marionettes. They’re puppets here, which are playing a some secret darker scheme. I think that’s the only logical explanation for this all. I cannot, stupidity does not cover it. This is just pure evil, in a sense.”
Malinen:
“I was in a small conference about a month ago in Cambridge and there was a ‘former’ CIA operative there and and she told me even in the introductory dinner before the conference started, that we need to break up Russia.”
Lottaz:
“In 2025. They still want to break up Russia?”
Malinen:
“Yeah. Yeah. There was two other neocons there and one of the main points or main ideas of the conference was to learn what they are aiming at. And what we learned was that
there is no end point to this war. They really want a perpetual war, and they want to break up Russia.” It was really shocking. It was really shocking to hear, because this was a conspiracy theory for me earlier. And then she told me straight to my face, we need to break up Russia. I was like, okay, this is true then. This is what they’re aiming at. And I don’t know the exact exact players here, but all the stooges that were in the White House, and I don’t mean President Trump, they are…someone is telling them what to do.
This is some kind of scheme, some kind of plan. It’s the only logical explanation, in my thinking.
Lottaz:
“You know, there’s enough people with that kind of belief that you would have a viable political faction. And you have this political faction. It’s the Blumenthals and what’s the other guy’s name? Sorry, the the other senator, Lindsey Graham, and so on.”
Malinen:
“Yeah, it’s that group that pushes for stuff like this, and it’s that group that would sign up to this. And it’s that kind of people then in the think tanks and so on who write all of these papers. And then there are accolytes who go to the CIA
and work there who then take part in these conferences. So it’s just a natural group of people who wants to see such a scenario. But the the the question is are they still powerful?
Is the ‘Break Up Russia’ faction still powerful enough? And I would say, like just from a grand strategic point of view, the US itself is not strong enough to push for that anymore. They’ve they’ve lost that game in Ukraine. So the fascinating thing is that there’s still people who believe that and who want to push for that. And do they have another strategy now of achieving it? Because all they’ve done so far is to create the opposite.”
Lottaz:
“The thing is, the general media information that we that we’re getting in Europe is still, to this day, this pure contradiction. On the one hand, that the Russians are very weak and, you know, badly organized. The only reason why they haven’t lost yet is because they use human waves, right? They just 10 times more. They they don’t value life. On the other hand, we also need to worry about them being in Portugal tomorrow, if they’re not stopped in Ukraine.” [Again, this made me laugh.]
“So that’s still the tenor right now. And the one thing that nobody ever said, and you know my my dear mother, she listens to the radio every day and she cares about this slaughter very much because she cares for human life, right? Like any decent normal human being. And when she said ‘Yeah, but the Russians are advancing very slowly.’ I said, ‘Yeah, because the Russians are fighting a war of attrition. They don’t want to win a lot of territory. They just wanted to grind down anything NATO could throw at them. An they did so very successfully.’ And and her answer was ‘oh, but somebody would need to explain that to to me and others.’ So it’s still not being explained in those terms. It’s only like us in the alternative sphere that actually read the Russian sources and and try to understand what they are exact exactly doing.”

The final piece of the interview discussed how the only way to get peace in Ukraine would be for Trump to remove Zelensky, which he won’t/can’t do. If Trump sees that he cannot override the deep state and the military industry complex in the US, they believe he’s made a deal with Putin that he’s willing to let Russians move further into Ukraine, until Ukraine is forced into peace.
The video is well worth watching, and it certainly put Finland on my radar in a way that it hadn’t been before.

Just saw one of those quick smiling upbeat press statements by Kevin Hassett re state of economy. All is good.
Economics is not by strong point. However, my general sense on the latest not so good jobs report is that it is part of the lag when you are in the middle of a massive total restructuring of our economy (reducing government workforce, reducing private workforce paid for by USAID and unnecessary government contracts and grants, companies adjusting to new tariff rules, American First economic policy changes, etc).
Also saw where wage growth is up and the Fed may finally (and overdue) lower rates. The uncertainty over tariffs will settle down after court challenges are resolved and Trump finalizes the last handful of deals with countries re tariffs. And the data on so many investments coming into the US (from within and without) is only just beginning but is amazing even though the positive effect will take time.

HASSETT: All of the job creation in the U.S. has come from native-born workers, whereas in the Biden admin, half was foreign-born… if the supply of new illegal immigrants goes to zero, as it has, then there won’t be non native-born workers taking jobs from native-born workers.

Funny, I don’t recall Powell expressing any concern about the massive government spending under Biden, much less basing Fed policy decisions on it. He was probably too busy worrying about DEI and climate change.
During the auto-pen years:
Government jobs increased (costing taxpayers and increased national debt)
During the trump 1/2 year, 2025:
Government jobs decreasing (saving taxpayers and national debt)
Investments in a U.S. manufacturing resurgence beginning (not government jobs, private jobs to be growing)…
And yes,
higher interest can reduce the rate of inflation growth.
