How many “1,000 year” floods are we going to have this year?

A lot. Because it’s far more common than you (and others) have been misled to believe.

 I will offer up an explainer on this subject once again. 

A “1-in-1,000-year flood” is a flood that has a 0.1% chance of occurring in any given year at one specific location. That last part is key—this recurrence interval only applies to one location at a time.

Let’s talk about river floods. 

According to USGS, there are 250,000 rivers in the United States within 19,000 watersheds.

Since rivers and streams are not at an independent risk of flooding (as many are connected within a river basin), we can estimate the expected number of “1000-year” river floods per year using the watershed figure. 

With that information, it can be expected that the U.S. will get 19 “1,000-year” river floods each year, on average. Some years, there will be more than 19, while in other years, there will be fewer.

 Let’s now talk about flash floods. Well, the U.S. covers about 3,809,525 square miles of land. A flash flood from afternoon thunderstorms might inundate 100 square miles. 

If we divide the U.S. into 38,095 evenly sized 100 square mile grids, we can expect there to be a total of 38 “1,000-year” flash floods each year. Now, some of those flash floods could trigger river floods. 

So, in total, the U.S. may observe 30 to 60 “1,000-year” floods each year, and it means absolutely nothing with respect to climate change (or weather modification if you’re one of those people).

COMMENTARY FOR PSALMS 119

“The general scope and design of this psalm is to magnify the Divine law, and make it honourable. There are ten words by which Divine revelation is called in this psalm, and each expresses what God expects from us, and what we may expect from him.

1. God’s law; this is enacted by him as our Sovereign.
2. His way; this is the rule of his providence.
3. His testimonies; they are solemnly declared to the world.
4. His commandments; given with authority.
5. His precepts; not left as indifferent matters to us.
6. His word, or saying; it is the declaration of his mind.
7. His judgments; framed in infinite wisdom.
8. His righteousness; it is the rule and standard of what is right.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me. 

Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

I have followed Matt on X during his journey of enlightenment. He is a resident of Asheville, NC who works remotely for silicon valley. Being a leftist but a good person he went out and started working to help after the catastrophic flooding there. And it opened his eyes changed his life!

He has returned to attending church. At first he went alone. Then his family joined him. And now, this coming Sunday, his parents re coming and for the first time since he was a kid and walked out of the church, he will be going with his parents to services.

Oh man… not sure how to write this. Here it goes.

January of this year, I did something I hadn’t done… ever. I gave Trump credit for doing something good. I gave him credit for keeping his promises to us in Western North Carolina.

I could never have imagined the volume of hate and anger I received from doing something that was obviously the right thing to do. Just giving credit where credit was due. Saying thank you.

Since that moment, I’ve learned a lot.

I’ve learned that some of my liberal friends were never friends. They torched our friendship almost immediately… just for thanking Trump.

I learned that many liberals seem to preach tolerance, but aren’t tolerant of conservative ideas AT ALL, it’s just an act to pretend to be moral.

I learned that the greatest organizations in the world are churches… something that was genuinely UNTHINKABLE for me a year ago.

I learned that the media just… lie. They lie constantly and without fear of being caught.

I learned this lying comes from a bizarre sense of righteous morality that the lie, in the end, will achieve some good. I learned they cannot be trusted.

I learned that I offloaded my own critical thinking to these organizations, and that many of the news “stories” I believed were true… never were.

I learned what it means to be swatted.

I learned what it’s like to have some crazed leftists send armed police to my home, with my kids in their beds, at 2AM claiming I had been shot and to break down the door.

I learned that the only thing in the world that can change a persons mind is kindness is action… because that’s what changed mine.

I learned that kindness is telling the truth, not protecting someone’s feelings.

I learned that telling the truth is the most dangerous thing you can do, and that’s why free speech matters so much.

I learned that free speech is never truly free… they will come after your entire life and try to destroy everything in it. …but it’s worth it It’s all been worth it.
