Believe it or not over all for the lower 48, this July has only been the 20th warmest so far this century as far a daily high temps. Do not confuse this with over all temp because due to the high load of water vapor there has been relatively little cooling at night and that’s a big part of why it feels so miserable.

I grew up in a brick faced end-of-group row house on the SW outskirts of Baltimore in the latter ’50s and ’60s. We had no A/C. Roof was covered with slate “shingles” (slate= rock) which held the heat long after the sun set. Of course brick also has impressive heat retention. Interior walls were all covered with thick plaster,,which also has a higher specific heat quality than modern gypsum (drywall.)
Sleeping was accomplished by having a strong Hunter Zephyr window fan on the first floor blowing outward and closing up the rest of the first floor windows. Second floor bedroom windows were all opened wide and the fan pulled in the night air which wafted across our beds (yes we had screens..😏 ).
On the most extreme nights, I went down to the basement which was considerably cooler than the second floor and slept in an old chair. My 7’x11′ bedroom was the only one with one outside wall and one window and it faced west, so it was the warmest wall going into the evenings. The other two bedrooms were each on the two outside corners of the small house so they each had two outside walls and two windows

The floor in the front room is where Ma would get us all to sleep when it was unbearably humid-hot.
There were three large windows -like a bay window, and one window in the adjoining dining room -for a little cross ventilation.
Oh, those nights
-there was no cross breeze.
-Not a whisper of a breeze. Dead stillness.
You could almost hear the heat! I swear!!!
We had no large fan…, just a little old one on a base with the wire around the blades.
She’d make it kind of like a middle of the night adventure; insisting, “okay, come on, everybody get up.”
-you might imagine the grunts —ha!
She’d have each of us run cold water on our hands and arms and face and neck and back of the knees.
Then we’d lie on
the outside line-dried sheets she spread out on the floor.
They were crisp and cool
-for about a minute.
But, we survived.

LOL! expensive! I get the jam. I brought some home for us and my neighbor fro a trip to Wyoming and idaho. Steve loved it so much that when he went out west he found a relative that would ship him Huckleberry jam when he wanted it and he gives me a jar every once in awhile.
While I was out there went to a place to have lunch. The piece of huckleberry pie I had for desert cost more than the rest of my lunch.

“The faithful lament their calamities, and hope in God’s mercies.1-20 The prophet relates the more gloomy and discouraging part of his experience, and how he found support and relief. In the time of his trial the Lord had become terrible to him. It was an affliction that was misery itself; for sin makes the cup of affliction a bitter cup. The struggle between unbelief and faith is often very severe. But the weakest believer is wrong, if he thinks that his strength and hope are perished from the Lord.”
(21-36) “Having stated his distress and temptation, the prophet shows how he was raised above it. Bad as things are, it is owing to the mercy of God that they are not worse. We should observe what makes for us, as well as what is against us. God’s compassions fail not; of this we have fresh instances every morning. Portions on earth are perishing things, but God is a portion for ever. It is our duty, and will be our comfort and satisfaction, to hope and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord. PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

I doubt you’ll hear about this anywhere on TV in the US. Though we’ve been hot here in the much of the US, globally temperatures are plummeting. The S. hemisphere has been having a colder than normal winter.
European model is forecasting up to 30 cm of snow at higher elevations in the Alps. That’s nearly a foot of snow in JULY/early August.
Would not be surprised if some climbers end up in trouble. -6 C = 21 deg. F.

BTW Texas, though the state has had relatively wet and mild temps so far this summer, that is expected to change in August. While the Eastern half of the US is forecast to average cooler than normal temps during the month of August, Texas and most of the west is forecast to have higher than average temps for the coming month.

The heat and humidity in central il has been like a sauna.
Here in central Indiana too. Almost like a jungle with rain every day and humidity running at 70-80%. Thank God for A/C.
Usually by this time of year I can get by just fine with mowing every other week. Not this year! The grass and weeds are growing like it’s Spring! And with so much rain one has no choice but to get it done when on can no matter if the heat index is 100 or more. I do some, take a break and rehydrate, do some more, until it gets done.
On the bright side, everyone’s gardens around here are producing like crazy. Everyone trying to give us fresh tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, etc.

except because my mower is electric (not my choice, but it does a fine job; after 2 recall replacements 😳) , I have to wait for grass to dry, so, there has been extra tall weeds and grass —because wet grass is a big no-no. Also, I keep batteries stored in a cooler in the garage; for fear of them getting too hot if exposed to such extreme heat.
Been watering garden and flowers at least twice a day.
If not for a/c
the blow-up baby pool; with a steady hose-flowing, would be my dwelling -under a tree.
Nah… the big rectangular one with a filter that’s still in the box would be in full time use. 😃
The problem is the higher the grass gets the longer it takes to dry. I too, wait until the grass is reasonably dry to mow it. Mowing wet grass is harder on the equipment and means the nasty job of cleaning the mower deck. No big deal for my trim mower but the 50″ deck on the zero turn is another matter.
For the past 7-8 summers it’s been blazing hot here, 105 – 110 every day. This summer? AWESOME. The whole of last week was low 90s, before that mid 90s. The next 10 days or so upper 90s with very low humidity, to boot. Love summers like this!
Forgot to mention, this is the San Joaquin Valley in CA.
The administration has already hit out at another ‘trial’ in Columbia.
