Ironically, a Republican administration is detailing the events of how a Democrat administration targeted one of the most beloved Democrat legacy names.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On July 21, 2025, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard released over 230,000 pages of documents related to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK), in accordance with President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order 14176.
This unprecedented release follows through on President Trump’s commitment to fully release previously-classified records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy (JFK), Senator Robert F. Kennedy (RFK), and MLK, and was carried out in coordination with the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the National Archives.
Unlike the majority of the JFK assassination files — which were identified and released in accordance with federal law — the MLK files in today’s release had never been digitized and sat collecting dust in facilities across the federal government for decades, until today.
The documents include details about the FBI’s investigation into the assassination of MLK — including the discussion of potential leads, internal FBI memos detailing the progress of the case, and documents related to James Earl Ray’s former cellmate, who stated he discussed with Ray an alleged assassination plot. Additionally, as James Earl Ray fled the country following the assassination, the release includes unique foreign evidence from a Canadian police department. Never-before-seen CIA records outline overseas intelligence on the international hunt for the prime suspect in the assassination.

While some of the documents released were made public through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, today’s release is the first time these records are published online in one collection with minimal redactions for privacy reasons — including redactions for Social Security Numbers and grand jury information. As agencies continue to search government facilities for additional files, the new documents will be uploaded alongside the previously released files at archives.gov/mlk to ensure all MLK assassination documents can be found in a centralized location. About 25 years ago, I mailed my cousin a package with a bunch of little stuff for her five kids (silly string, etc.). The package arrived at the Kilcogy post office, the nearest p.o. to her place, where it sat “in state” for all the locals to view “the parcel from the Yanks.” After 3 days of viewing, the postman came out to my cousin’s farm to deliver it, along with most of the folks in Kilcogy. They stood in the front yard while the postman went to the door. My cousin Pauline answered and seeing the big crowd, of course, she had to open “the parcel from the Yanks” right then and there. A party ensued and lasted most of the day. She telephoned me later and thanked me for thinking of the kids, but suggested that I not send packages — she can’t afford beer for the entire village! The Irish do have a way, don’t they!? Keep the faith…you may get there before you know it. In the meantime: Go n-éirí an bóthar leat.
Never have been to Ireland, and only in the past few years have I learned of a rather extensive Irish heritage on both sides of my family.
But I always loved the John Ford/John Wayne movie The Quiet Man, and always hoped that it was true.

After my 18th birthday I took a 1 month trip around Ireland. That was some 30 years ago. It was before the EU transformed it beyond recognition, basically succeeding in doing what the British had tried for 800 years. When we came to Kilkenny we stayed there for 2 days. In a small pub across the street from the hostel that evening there was an old barber in his 80s. Apparently the people knew he was coming, so the pub was even fuller than normally. This man started singing “The Bard of Armagh”. It’s hard to describe, but I guess surreally beautiful gets closest to what I witnessed there. It was a once in a lifetime experience, a blessing for sure.
Fortunately or unfortunately the young people of Ireland have no idea what they lost…
Such a beautiful story…and one I can feel very deeply because I had a similar experience on my first trip to Britain. It was a coach tour with one of the overnight stops in Llangollen a small town in North Wales. We went to a small pub on the night the local men’s choir showed up. And completely unfamiliar as I was with anything Welsh except through old black and white movies, when they started singing Cwm Rhondda, their voices so overwhelmed me that I found myself suddenly and silently weeping.
I didn’t know it that night, but as fate …or design…would have it, this tourist would come to live near this beautiful town for the sweetest two decades of my life…
The memory of their singing now this early morning is evoking the same response…
Tyrants may try to silence speech. And they may be successful as we can see all to clearly today…
But they cannot and never will be able to silence the human voice in song, the lyrics reflecting history and memories of times past. Songs handed down from generations are more powerful than mere speech.
Who knows..perhaps as they grow older, those young people as they remember and sing those songs themselves will come to realize what they’ve lost…or more accurately what was stolen from them. And the terrible tide of despotism will ebb once more.

I returned from Wales to America for the same reason you departed Ireland. We get to an age when such choices call to us. But had I not, I wouldn’t have found another home amongst these branches with so many kind and erudite friends who have become beloved family. When I lived at Kilkenny I had many conversations about the political developments. The question I asked basically was always the same: “Why do you give your country away now, having fought so desperately to regain it for so long?” One of the answers I got was that betrayal draws itself like a red line through irish history. It is this vulnerability to “Divide and Conquer” that has plagued the Irish all the time. When I travelled through Dublin at that time I saw a poster of a then chanceless “far right” party that accused Sin Fein of exactly the same treason, picturing the heroes of ’16. It was heartbreaking even then, long before the Irish became a minority in their own land.
I don’t know why this affects me so much, but there isn’t a country on earth, including my own that I feel so much and am so sorry about like I do for Ireland. I love their culture and music. Maybe I spent one of my past lives there?
Speaking of special moments…I still have a picture, taken from an old norman tower, close to the church of Kilkenny. I went to the top and it was one of those mixed weather days that are so typical for Ireland. It was like a scene from a long gone past. The sun just got through the clouds. Rays of sunlight piercing through, iluminating the vast pastures of the surrounding area. I’ll never forget that day!

With your description of the scene you experienced and the day you’ll never forget, there goes my heart, AE…because I have so many just like them. And so, as with you, it is as deeply painful for me now to watch a country which took my heart rapidly descend to a totalitarian state as it was when I lived there witnessing the terrorist bombings of innocents by the IRA.
I believe it was Somerset Maugham who wrote (paraphrasing) that some people are born in the wrong place. And by some stroke of fortune they arrive elsewhere where everything seems more familiar than where they came from. The people, the scenery, the buildings, everything. They feel instantly at home. This is where they surely should have been born, or perhaps were once upon a time.
Nothing I’ve ever read has stuck with me as has this passage…because that is how I felt. I’m sure you can identify with my feelings.

This may not help, but it is a palliative I picked up when I was living in Wales which worked for me on the occasions when I was afflicted by the same.
Boil water and let it cool to a warm, drinkable temperature. Take repetitive sips, not gulps. And if you are so inclined dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda before you drink it. Old remedy which I found effective. I surely do hope it will be the same for you, my new friend.

Was an ambulance driver… a ‘sand hog’ (worked building tunnels under rivers)… proudly owned a small grocery store… and passed away at 94 in 1986.

I too, am of Irish descent. On my one and only trip to the British Isles, I was yanked out of line at Gatwick, brought into a private room and was strip searched. They went through my luggage thoroughly and than put me all back together. It was all very professional and as I was getting dressed I asked, if they were allowed to tell me, why I was singled out?
I was told that since I was an Irish looking American they were mainly looking for cash I might be bringing in for the IRA. I didn’t complain because I thought they were doing the right thing. I saw it as a great story to repeat and my fiance and future wife thought it was absolutely hilarious. She teased me about it for days.

As a child, I watched on tv the live transmission of MLK giving his “I Have a Dream” speech. I liked it so much I decided to go along with it- to judge people based on what they do, not on what they look like.

What does “documents released” actually mean? Is it (1) heavily redacted documents put on the internet for all to comb thru; (2) NOT heavily redacted documents put on the internet; or (3) documents sent to some other agency such as DOJ for them to continue to hide, redact, change, destroy?
