This looks so much like the view from the mountain in our backyard, at about 11,000 feet – it actually could be – though the cactus does not grow at that altitude- so maybe 6,000 feet.

Saguaros grow only in very specific areas and only in the Sonoran Desert. (So when you see them in a movie set in Texas – they are cardboard!) They produce flowers and then fruit in June. In most areas, only certain Indian tribes are allowed to harvest them.
We have many types on our property- one is called jumping cactus. It is a cholla and seems as though it actually jumps out and attaches itself to you as you pass by! Very painful – because it not only injects a poison, but its spines go in every direction, so pulling it off you is likely to elicit a few choice noises and words! And, I’ve perfected those. 😉
They all produce a gorgeous colorful flower, usually an edible fruit and an ethereal scent. The yin and yang of pain and beauty!
All our animals are very adept at avoiding cactus spines, but occasionally they mess up while chasing some poor critter. So we always carry a comb in our pockets to remove on the go. 😃

Afternoon, friend benzy. My late wife and I were at an antique show here in Texas, we happened to encounter a couple of vendors who were from the UK. I mentioned my Scots-Irish roots. The husband laughed (it was in good humor) and said ” . . . Ah, yes, Europe’s barbarians . . .” Well, we did decamp by the millions to settle in what is now referred to as “appalachia” so I guess “they’uns” might have a point.

Having worked for awhile in the documentary film industry, your comments strongly resonate. I come from an era where “editing” often (usually) consisted of razor-blade cutting 1/4 in tape. You could do all kinds of stuff if you knew how. (Get the spacing right and then use a equalizer to make it all flow together. If you were lucky nobody could tell where the tape edit was . . . 🙂 Looking back, it is inescapable that the available tech was so primitive. But, then it was all pre-digital and had been that way for years and years.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. His courage in protecting his teammates represents the very best of Long Island and the selfless sacrifice of Navy Special Warfare.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan on 27 and 28 June 2005. While leading a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lieutenant Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. On 28 June 2005, operating in an extremely rugged enemy-controlled area, Lieutenant Murphy’s team was discovered by anti-coalition militia sympathizers who revealed their position to Taliban fighters. As a result, between 30 and 40 enemy fighters besieged his four-member team. Demonstrating exceptional resolve, Lieutenant Murphy valiantly led his men in engaging the large enemy force. The ensuing fierce firefight resulted in numerous enemy casualties, as well as the wounding of all four members of the team. Ignoring his own wounds and demonstrating exceptional composure, Lieutenant Murphy continued to lead and encourage his men. When the primary communicator fell mortally wounded, Lieutenant Murphy repeatedly attempted to call for assistance for his beleaguered teammates. S/Sgt. Morris instantly returned the fire and killed the gunner. Continuing to crawl within a few feet of the gun, he hurled a grenade and killed the remainder of the enemy crew. Although in pain and bleeding profusely, S/Sgt. Morris continued his reconnaissance. Returning to the platoon area, he reported the results of his reconnaissance to the platoon leader. As he spoke, the platoon came under heavy fire. Refusing medical attention for himself, he deployed his men in better firing positions confronting the entrenched enemy to his front. Then for eight hours the platoon engaged the numerically superior enemy force. Withdrawal was impossible without abandoning many wounded and dead. Finding the platoon medic dead, S/Sgt. Morris administered first aid to himself and was returning to treat the wounded members of his squad with the medic’s first-aid kit when he was again wounded. Knocked down and stunned, he regained consciousness and continued to treat the wounded, reposition his men, and inspire and encourage their efforts. Wounded again when an enemy grenade shattered his left hand, nonetheless he personally took up the fight and armed and threw several grenades which killed a number of enemy soldiers. Seeing that an enemy machine gun had maneuvered behind his platoon and was delivering the fire upon his men, S/Sgt. Morris and another man crawled toward the gun to knock it out. His comrade was killed and S/Sgt. Morris sustained another wound, but, firing his rifle with one hand, he silenced the enemy machine gun. Returning to the platoon, he courageously exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire to drag the wounded to a protected area, and with utter disregard for his personal safety and the pain he suffered, he continued to lead and direct the efforts of his men until relief arrived. Upon termination of the battle, important documents were found among the enemy dead revealing a planned ambush of a Republic of Vietnam battalion. Use of this information prevented the ambush and saved many lives. S/Sgt. Morris’ gallantry was instrumental in the successful defeat of the enemy, saved many lives, and was in the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
