As a nation, we have allowed ourselves to be represented by people who want to languish in the habit of not doing anything about things that need tending!

This is why the Federal Government wasn’t supposed to be able to do very much in it’s original design. All of these things are supposed to be handled at the state or local level, or not at all. It needs to collapse back to it’s original powers and nothing more.
Population decline, and children no longer wanting to care for their elderly parents.
Dislike of ones own parents is the issue that needs addressing.
There needs to be a reversal in attitude toward big families, and all living under the same roof.
We lived under one roof for a few years..three boys under 9.. 4 women over 60, ( two spinster sister couples and our sixty something grandparents.
One outside flush toilet in a cold sandstone shed.

Around where we live now, ( very affluent) parents are often viewed as a financial resource.

Indian families are so successful in the west because they share the same bills, eat out of the same pot, care for each others children, giving parents down time, and they share the same home tutors. They learn skills, earn money, have strong family bonds, and a support network within their family that cannot be broken.
Western families teach their kids to get out of the house.
Many immigrant families are “successful” in the West because of chain migration and the financial benefits of having several members of the household collecting SSI and food stamps, and receiving Medicaid as “low income seniors” even though they never worked a day in this country!
Changing the parameters for who is allowed to immigrate and what benefits they’re allowed to receive wood change the entire dynamic, IMHO!
I do not blame someone for wanting their family members to be with them but if they come to this country then the family members who requested them need to be 100% responsible for all of their financial burden!
In addition, NO ONE should be eligible for ANY benefits if they do not speak enough English to apply for them!
My husband is a first generation American so I do have personal experience with this issue. It took his father five years to get established and fill out all of the necessary paperwork in order to bring his mother and older siblings to America. They had to learn English immediately and were permanently barred from receiving ANY type of public assistance, which they wouldn’t have wanted anyway!
Simply returning to those requirements would make a huge difference! We could once again become a melting pot rather than a Balkanized country of divided loyalties!
Families should be nuclear families and elderly parents if as you say they are responsible for them.
None of this cousins and uncles stuff, especially when you have a lot of inbred third world-types who are related to their entire village.

You can’t generalize like that. The UK did it to their detriment. Their new influx of migrants are purely there for the benefits, but the first to arrive worked, and had to work. Those first immigrants now make up 90% of the lawyers, and doctors.
Did you read my entire comment? My in-laws immigrated here for a better life for themselves and their family and they worked hard! They learned English, they got jobs, and they paid taxes. There was no option available for them to bring family members over unless they were willing to foot the entire bill for everything, for the rest of their lives!
The current laws of family reunification specifically voided those policies and encouraged the importation of millions of people who would only be a drain on our society rather than making positive contributions!
I am absolutely not generalizing! I am speaking from personal experience and everything I said can be easily verified!
I currently live in an area of the country that is very high tech and almost every house in this area has been sold to workers in that field, who can bring over their parents and in-laws, which significantly boosts their monthly income because they all go on to SSI and receive cash every month! None of them learn any English and they have zero interest in becoming a part of this country, other than the checks they get every month from our government!

I taught my kids to be independent so that they could survive on their own after I was gone.
Part of that learning process was to spread their wings & fly from the nest. We didn’t disengage from each other in the process & when they needed help they knew to come home.
Now, my eldest granddaughter drives 3 hours each way to spend lots of weekends helping me maintain my 1/2 acre yard & to do any other chores that I ask of her. I can’t begin to tell you what a joy she is & how much I appreciate her.
I intend to live/die on my own before I will have an “immigrant” wipe my behind. I’d rather die of neglect than give anyone an opportunity to abuse me the ways that we hear are happening in nursing homes & private homes both here & abroad.
You can create independence within your own family unit, and ultimately people will do what suits them.

I was in college in the 70s. Got married when I was 25. However, I got the idea that couples shouldn’t start a family until they both had good jobs and had bought their first home. (not sure from where, just society in general I guess).
My older sisters got married at 19 or 20 and moved into an apartment. They had babies before they even had a house! Can you imagine that?

We have an awful way of treating large families here, and mocking “sons living in their Mothers basements” etc What if that son is helping the Mother by being there, helping toward bills, and keeping the roof over her head etc Families need to step back a few generations, and start rebuilding them!

We need to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons, he and likeminded ideologues in Washington are now arguing. They’re just weeks away.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because the same people have been making the same claim since at least the 1990s. It’s a lie. In fact, there is zero credible intelligence that suggests Iran is anywhere near building a bomb, or has plans to. None. Anyone who claims otherwise is ignorant or dishonest.
If the US government knew Iran was weeks from possessing a nuclear weapon, we’d be at war already. Iran knows this, which is why they aren’t building one. Iran also knows it’s unwise to give up its weapons program entirely. Muammar Gaddafi tried that and wound up sodomized with a bayonet. As soon as Gaddafi disarmed, NATO killed him. Iran’s leaders saw that happen. They learned the obvious lesson.
So why is Mark Levin once again hyperventilating about weapons of mass destruction? America’s record of overthrowing foreign leaders is so embarrassingly counterproductive that regime change has become a synonym for disaster. Officially, no one supports it.

We have to act now!” They don’t really mean this, and you can tell they don’t by what they omit. At least two of Iran’s neighbors — both Islamic nations — already have nuclear weapons. That fact should scare the hell out of Mark Levin. Yet for some reason he never mentions it. How come? Because it’s not the weapons he hates. It’s the ideology of the Iranian government, which is why he’s lobbying to overthrow it.
It goes without saying that there are very few Trump voters who’d support a regime change war in Iran. Donald Trump has argued loudly against reckless lunacy like this. Trump ran for president as a peace candidate. That’s what made him different from conventional Republicans. It’s why he won. A war with Iran would amount to a profound betrayal of his supporters. It would end his presidency. That may explain why so many of Trump’s enemies are advocating for it.
And then there’s the question of the war itself. Iran may not have nukes, but it has a fearsome arsenal of ballistic missiles, many of which are aimed at US military installations in the Gulf, as well as at our allies and at critical energy infrastructure. The first week of a war with Iran could easily kill thousands of Americans. It could also collapse our economy, as surging oil prices trigger unmanageable inflation. Consider the effects of $30 gasoline.
But the second week of the war could be even worse. Iran isn’t Iraq or Libya, or even North Korea. While it’s often described as a rogue state, Iran has powerful allies. It’s now part of a global bloc called BRICS, which represents the majority of the world’s landmass, population, economy and military power. Iran has extensive military ties with Russia. It sells the overwhelming majority of its oil exports to China. Iran isn’t alone. An attack on Iran could very easily become a world war. We’d lose.
None of these are far fetched predictions. Most of them comport with the Pentagon’s own estimates: many Americans would die during a war with Iran. People like Mark Levin don’t seem to care about this. It’s not relevant to them. Instead they insist that Iran give up all uranium enrichment, regardless of its purpose. They know perfectly well that Iran will never accept that demand. They’ll fight first. And of course that’s the whole point of pushing for it: to box the Trump administration into a regime change war in Iran.
The one thing that people like Mark Levin don’t want is a peaceful solution to the problem of Iran, despite the obvious benefits to the United States. They denounce anyone who advocates for a deal as a traitor and a bigot. They tell us with a straight face that Long Island native Steve Witkoff is a secret tool of Islamic monarchies. They’ll say or do whatever it takes. They have no limits. These are scary people. Pray that Donald Trump ignores them.”

I have always believed that Donald Trump is the best person — and maybe the only person — who can end the war between Russia and Ukraine honorably and justly.
I appreciate the fact that President Trump has gone the extra mile by engaging Putin in a positive way to try to get him to come to the table.
I have always supported this approach, but to make peace you have to have willing partners.

I’m talking about Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” which, as is the pattern in DC over the last two decades plus, always has meant the exact opposite of whatever the bill is named.
The basic problem government has at all levels is that once a program gets introduced or advanced it is never removed. All the way back to 2019 the level of spending and debt it generated was unsustainable and not a little either; as I’ve pointed out most of the problem traces directly or indirectly straight to CMS and has for 30 years and its not a function of whether people need medical care — its a function of cost and the fact that as with education cost and results have been decoupled to the point that there’s no connection between them at all.
You can see proof of this in all the exemptions that the various people who make these rules and law have for themselves. For example why is it that every Congressperson isn’t required to buy their own Obamacare policies in the marketplace for themselves and their families, at full price and with their own money (since all of their salaries are well beyond the “subsidy” phase-outs) and deal with the same issues everyone else does?
The usual excuse, that if you want {X} done, and most people agree {X} is a good thing, you must tolerate all the other wild-eyed spending — unrelated to {X} — in order to have it. This is a damnable lie but it is the currency of both political parties and has been for decades. As an example nobody wants murderous thugs who are in the US illegally to stay and no, funding for finding and expelling them does not require keeping the rest of the spending escalation since 2019 in place. The two are completely unrelated, other than of course buying the Congressional votes for one by doing the other.
As anyone who’s read this column knows I’m no fan of Elon Musk but a correct statement is correct no matter who’s mouth it comes out of, and in this regard Elon is absolutely correct: The current so-called “budget proposal” is a steaming pile and it demonstrates that neither political party will do anything until the economy folds back on them led by the bond market.
The CBO is now out with their alleged “scoring” but please understand that the CBO doesn’t deliberately knob-twist for political purposes — their math is set not by reasonable expectations but rather is statutorily-required so, for example, they are required to compute expected deficit and tax impacts as if all expirations of either a tax or a spending item will occur as in current law even if said law has stood on the books for decades and in every case where the expiration comes up it has been extended. This is why, for example, there is always an annual “Doc Fix” bill put forward for CMS; it is a deliberate act to game the projected deficit figures lower, both parties engage in it equally and both parties have bound the CBO and thus force it to understate forward deficit expectations by forbidding them the capacity to use said history in their projections.
If you did this in the private sector, whether publicly-traded or not, by the way, you’d go to prison as that sort of action designed to deliberately generate a false financial statement would nearly-always cross the line into a criminal act.
Collapse of federal spending capacity caused by a rapid and uncontrolled rise in borrowing costs is not imminent as far as I can tell but it is extraordinarily unwise to wait until it is because inertia cuts both ways and no, we are not going to “get away with this” indefinitely — and when the bad comes it will last, even with reasonable corrective measures that impose severe austerity for about as long as ignoring it lasted.
Do not believe for one second that this will be limited to government services.
This is already starting to show up in various data sets, such as the GDP figures and employment, indicating that the inertial resistance is wearing off. Of course the usual “reaction” to softening economic data is to do the opposite of what must happen to fix this, and if that is attempted this time it will make the situation much worse.
