Tom’s thesis is that there is a power struggle between Europe (EU) and the United States and that much of the stagnation in the West, over the last three decades, was due to the fact that the Western elites were busy fighting for control instead of looking after their own economies and development. In other words, it is like two business partners breaking up. I think we have all seen businesses like that, where two guys form a company and in the beginning all was good, but eventually they start fighting over the direction of the company, then the business starts going down hill and eventually the partners split taking different parts of the company with them.
PS: Kind of ironic that after the West “won” the Cold War and defeated communism that the smug Western elites allowed China and Russia overtake them. If DJT had only run for President in the 1990s (or Perot or Buchannan had won) this would never have happened. (sigh)

Living here in Michigan – one of the most polluted states in the nation – I’m not as excited about this as you are. We have over 6000 toxic waste sites including a spreading dioxane plume near Ann Arbor not too far from here. You can’t eat fish out of the entire 130-mile long Huron River (less than 10 miles from where I live) nor from any of its many connected lakes because of PFAS contamination.
Nobody wants out of control unelected beaurocrats running everything (well most sane people don’t) but giving companies free rein to do as they please just to create American jobs definitely isn’t MAGA.
Congress is supposed to be handling regulations but you know how the congress critters are going to vote when the big companies start writing campaign checks.
No regulations whatsoever? Very concerning.
Thanks, JSD — I live near Cleveland, and totally appreciate what you say. Growing up here in the ’60s, it was like a toxic waste dump. Companies had a blank check to poison the air, water, and soil. Lake Erie was polluted, and the Cuyahoga River was a joke because it caught on fire. Sad that a lot of our rust belt industry left, and I too hate the EPA overstepping.
But since moving back here in 2010, I am thrilled that the lake is clean and swimmable, the skies are clear in the summer, the soil is clean enough for city farms, and the river is clean enough for boating and even fishing. PTrump has said that although climate change is a power and money grab, he is in favor of clean air and water, and wants America healthy again. Let’s hope he provides some balance.
Yep. One of the companies that I worked for long ago in Plymouth Michigan disposed of their waste in a field right across the street from their manufacturing plant. Someone (probably us taxpayers) got to pay for the cleanup.

I look at it like, our companies have to comply with regulations that protect the air, soil, and water, and if they have to pass the costs along to the consumer, so be it.
However, if companies in China don’t have costs from protecting even human workers, let alone oceans at air, no other company can possibly compete with them.
I’ve always been disappointed with “conservatives” who bash the EPA for any and all regulations.
Make our companies do what needs to be done to clean up after themselves, and do not allow any products from a competitor who doesn’t follow the same high standards to be sold here, without tariffs to equalize the costs.
This is one of the things that costs Republicans votes- the way some of them are so very vocal about “job-killing regulations”.
You should see the EPA superfund sites at phosphate mines outside Tampa that are owned by Monsanto. There is so much mercury contamination in this State that eating deer meat and fish caught in our lakes and streams is not advisable. These companies have never given a fig about who has to live with their messes.
That’s the concern. A company doesn’t have a conscience… even if management does care, some day they will be gone.
The company that I just retired from (Japanese owned) had never had a layoff since it was founded in 1936 until 2008 when new management (Americans) came in and got rid of 25% of the workforce. They have had layoffs like clockwork ever since.

Show me in the US Constitution where it says the Federal government has to clean up messes in the states?
The individual States have their own versions of the EPA. Where I live, it is the Louisiana Dept. of Environmental Quality. People I work with have to deal with them a lot.
Like education, it is a States issue.

Still need national standards though. I can’t see getting rid of all federal regulations.
Go to your STATE authorities, rather than expect Federal Gov’t to solve your local problems.
That was my immediate reaction as well.
It can become a murky problem space. Back in the day I looked at power plant scrubbing regs for SO2 and NOx against epidemiological impact data. It turns out that there is a residual part of the population that will incur associated diseases regardless of effluent controls – but the cost of adding controls at the margin increased exponentially. Naturally, the regs eventually exceeded the “no projected gain” threshold.
There is also the contentious matter of quantifying “external diseconomies”.
That said, there are obvious cases where regulation based on real science/analysis and health impacts, national security, etc., matter.
Bounding Congress, various executive agencies/departments and all the lobbyists seeking lucre and preference to focus on the necessary will remain an eternal problem.

PDJT emphasized that he returned an El Salvadoran citizen to his country and Bukele wanted his citizen back. Bukele said that he wasn’t going to release Garcia into his country because Garcia is a criminal. So Garcia now gets to sit in prison under control of El Salvador of which he is a citizen.

“We need Russian gas, we need cheap energy – no matter where it comes from,” said Klaus Paur, managing director of Leuna-Harze, a petrochemical maker at Leuna Park.
French energy firms Engie and Total have also spoken out in favor of resuming gas purchases from Russia.

But just like with 8 USC 1324 and the INA reform act mandating almost $1,000/day fines for any person who was in the country beyond their legitimate period of stay so once ordered removed or your visa expired you better get out — or else — nobody has enforced said law.
Trump came into office and said he was going to fix this with regard to trade. Ok, the market people don’t believe him and then they have a 2-year-old style temper tantrum as they can’t have another candy bar in the bond market when he does some of it. What does he do? Give the market a candy bar rather than do the right thing, which is to say “**** off ****heads; you had fair warning and if you think you can push me around with this sort of **** I’ll **** you up the *** by throwing all of you in prison under long-standing anti-monopoly and racketeering laws — extortion is a predicate offense to RICO and indictments can issue faster than E/Os so choose wisely.”
