Los Angeles wildfires: California firebug arrest caught on video as police warn of arsonists

Police and residents of Azusa, California, a small city in Los Angeles County, teamed up Friday to stop a suspected arsonist in his tracks as at least three large wildfires threaten the region and winds are expected to pick up again.

With increased officers on patrol amid the wildfire emergency, Azusa Police Department Capt. Robert Landeros said the first responding officer quickly arrived on the scene at Pioneer Park around 11:30 p.m. after neighbors confronted the homeless suspect, who was still there when the first officer arrived.

“This was intentional,” Landeros told Fox News Digital on Monday. “Some of the neighbors confronted him, stopped him from setting an additional fire in the park.”

Video shows an Azusa officer handcuffing a man just steps from a billowing brush fire, which authorities say county firefighters quickly extinguished.

Police have identified the suspect as 39-year-old Jose Carranza-Escobar, “a transient” whose last known address was also in Azusa. They said he admitted to starting the brush fire.

The arrest comes as firefighters continue to battle at least three active wildfires in Los Angeles County that have killed at least 24 and damaged thousands of homes and businesses.

Carranza-Escobar has been charged with three separate arson charges and is facing nine years in state prison if convicted.

The Palisades Fire, the biggest and most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history, has “human origins” as a likely cause, according to a new report.

Authorities investigating the cause of the fire told the Los Angeles Times that they believe it was started by someone — possibly as an accident, sources told the Times.

Officials noted the trail is popular with hikers and is often used as a hangout by local teens and the fire may have “human origins,” according to the Times.

The area’s an overlook known as Skull Rock on the Temescal Ridge trail in Pacific Palisades.

The blaze has consumed nearly 30,000 acres (47 square miles) and destroyed 5,000 structures since it was sparked nearly a week ago.

NOAA seasonal projections are almost always worthless. They always have a warm bias.

Right now at 03:07 local time at my Indiana home my home weather station shows 0.1 deg F. Been going through my cured Chinese Elm firewood at a prodigious rate this winter. So far gone through a stack 7′ high by 6′ long. And I let it burn out before we go to bed and light it in the morning. If it’s getting above the mid 20s I don’t use it because it’ll get too hot in the living room.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

Biography: Edmund Halleys’ reputation mainly rests on his discovery of the orbit of Halley’s Comet, named after him but he was widely involved in a number of scientific endeavors.

Halley was educated at Queens’ College, Oxford where he was influenced by the work of Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed’s work to catalog the starts of the northern hemisphere.

In 1676 Halley began a voyage to St Helena in the southern hemisphere and had cataloged more than 300 stars by his return in 1678, publishing it later that year. As a result he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.

Halley was instrumental in bringing Issac Newton’s discoveries on planetary motion to publication, editing and overseeing the printing of Newton’s “Principia” in 1687.

IN 1705 Halley published his own work A Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets, in which he detailed the orbits of known comets and made the case that 3 were actually the same comet returning. He also successfully predicted its return in 1758.

In 1720 Halley was appointed Astronomer Royal at Greenwich.

I’ve been following Oren Cass because his brain appears to work very much like mine. 

I had a “bridge too far” moment under W when he came out in support of amnesty for illegals. I said “oh hell no,” and then began questioning everything I supported him in, including the Iraq war. I ended up rejecting pretty much all of W’s policies as based on lies and bullshit. 

Similarly, Cass appears to have had some “bridge too far” moment in which he questioned some aspect of Conservative Inc dogma that went against foundational principles or known data. Perhaps it was the “tariffs raise prices” dogma that the Trump tariffs proved to be incorrect. At any rate, he’s writing stuff that resonates with me. 

In the article below Cass takes on AI, a topic I ranted on here recently as little more than extremely rapid data mining of multiple gargantuan data bases looking for patterns and trends. Holy smoke!

Data. It’s just data. Nothing new. Nothing smart. Nothing intelligent. Just old fashioned data mining.
 
It’s no different from the cable company recommending movies based upon what you have watched and given a “like” to. Add more data, like times and days of the week, and you get better recommendations. 
 
On Monday evening you like to watch calming movies. On Wednesday when you are in the thick of the week, it’s aggressive shoot ‘em up movies. Fridays are wind-down movies, and Saturday you watch movies with complicated plots to follow. The cable company has “learned,” meaning it has analyzed more data to identify more patterns and more particularize its recommendations.

Have a Happy, Blessed Tuesday one and all

With the forecast for lower temps and the snow cover we have, I decided to buy a squirrel feeder. Mounted it to the big cotton wood tree in the back yard and filled it with a mixture of corn, sunflower seeds, and peanuts. 

For the last 40 minutes I have been watching our fox squirrel on that feeder. Even when my Generac generator kicked on for it’s weekly exercise it did not disturb his feeding. He must have been pretty hungry. Still there when I left to come type this. 

There has been snow coming down. Sherry is in the kitchen baking cookies. There is a fire in the insert. 

Tonight I will be going over to Steve’s barn to watch the races in the Chili Bowl in Tulsa. 

In the meantime I have been chuckling at the democrat senators raging at the Hegseth confirmation hearings. It really is hilarious to watch them act like toddlers that know they are not going to get their way.
