The centuries-old Paris landmark Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens today, five-and-a-half years after a devastating fire destroyed its spire and roof and brought the entire Gothic masterpiece within minutes of collapsing.
The 860-year-old medieval building has been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and the white stone and gold decorations shining brighter than ever. The state hands over the building to the Catholic church, the archbishop opens the door, and a liturgical celebration is held with singing and a blessing.

I was at Notre Dame in October. The speed of the repair & renovation over the past five years is a credit to the people of France, despite their feckless leadership.
Beneath the cathedral and the entire surrounding area is labyrinth of crypts, tunnels and foundations of structures that date all the way back to the Roman Empire.

It is unfortunate to note, but the way the demographics are going, in another one to two generations the Notre Dame Cathedral will likely be a mosque.

Also, remember that for most of the past 20 centuries the common people could not read. If you go into a beautiful Catholic Church you will find Gospel stories in murals on the walls, stained glass, etc.

If anyone has not read Ken Follett’s book, Pillars of the Earth…it does a realistic portrayal of what goes into the building a huge stone cathedral…long read but a page turner. I highly recommend it.

I was in Notre Dame Cathedral in November of 2008. Christmas lights were up all over the city, hot chestnuts being sold on Avenue Haussman and hucksters along the Seine pretending to find gold rings under the autumn leaves that they would then try to sell you. I was wearing a backpack and comfortable boots, staying with friends in Paris and I walked all over the city, from the Moulin Rouge, the Louvre, the tower and up the daunting 222 steps of the Sacré Coeur to Monmartre and Place du Tertre.
There is a bronze plaque in front of Notre Dame and tradition has it that whoever stands on that plaque will return to Paris. I stood on it but haven’t been back. Just as well as I’m too old to do all that walking now.
I remember lighting votive candles in the transept for my wife and sister, who both had cancer. It was one of the most moving experiences of my life.

Yes, I was very blessed! I wasn’t even supposed to be in Paris as I was staying in the south of France with friends.
But the French have little knowledge of plumbing so the friends had a toilet that had been broken for years.
I fixed their toilet and Pierre called his son who was living in Paris with his wife and said, “An American just fixed our loo!” The son was so impressed he told his dad to invite us up to the City of Lights and stay with them…so we did!

People are talking about “respect” being exhibited by many of the world leaders, yet the little penis piano player Zelensky gets away wearing his faux military outfit wherever he goes. WTF is that all about?
Seriously- it has become a bad joke and I feel it is a sign of his (Z-man’s) total lack of respect for the USA, NATO, et al who are financing his hideous war, for him to come to these events looking like a bum.
It is a total farce if you think about it- his outfit is supposed to imply that he’s what? A soldier who has to be prepared for battle? I don’t get it.
But I can tell you this- he needs to be told no admission to any event unless he complies with the dress code for said event. There are many restaurants who wouldn’t let him through the door with his phony costume.
Either he dresses up properly in a suit, tie, etc. or else he’s shown to the door. This should have been done a LONG time ago. The hell with the greedy, warmongering little bastard.

Some Catholic parishes in America rang bells at the same time as the bells at the rebuilt Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris were sounded again.

Leave it to the French to completely ruin a rededication/reopening of the most iconic and recognizable cathedral in all of Christendom.
Paris is the fashion capital of the world, and yet the primary color vestments of the officiating clergy looked like they were designed by a 4 year-old and a box of crayons. The cathedral is a gothic masterpiece — and yet the entry of cathedral banners looked like something competing soccer hooligans would carry into an ugly sports stadium. The music (not the lyrics) at the beginning when they knocked on the portals to gain entrance was mournful-sounding (almost like a funeral, not a celebration). The string duo was just plain bizarre and out of place. DO NOT GET ME STARTED on the organist, who was more interested in showing how he could pound the keys in (for the average listener) discordant noise for 20 agonizing minutes in total.
There were dignitaries from around the world, and the rededication was for all people. There was little that seemed joyous, inspiring, and spiritually meaningful for the world’s Catholics. This edifice is named “Our Lady of Paris” — an homage to the Blessed Mother — and yet there was little to remind us of that. Just stern, somber parsing of words did little to excite Catholics and from the bored expressions on those in attendance, confirmed how lifeless Catholic liturgy can be.
No pomp. No smiling. No soaring, recognizable music. Nothing for the audience to remember fondly, respond to, sing along with, or join in celebrating. Expressionless faces, lack of group dynamics.
This was merely a celebration of French (Parisian) effetism and snobbery. Simply awful.
The best part was the 10-minute standing ovation for the firefighters and those who lovingly restored the artwork. Note on the firefighters: all with short hair, cleanshaven, no jewelry, no exposed tattoos. Well done! On the other hand, the archbishops, bishops, and cardinals — you are on an international televised event with mutliple close-ups from all angles. Would it be asking too much to get a decent haircut before you march in the the cathedral?

So many words and so wrong. Glaringly, your critique of words and people somehow confirms how “lifeless” Catholic liturgy is.
Again you mention Catholics while at the same time mention “there were dignitaries from around the world” – (hence) your assertion “the re-dedication was for all people”. And you are so sure there is little to remind of homage to the Blessed Mother. What then is the Nicolas Coustou’s “Pietà”, part of the Vœu de Louis XIII ensemble, to you? It survived largely unscathed, but molten lead from the blaze was fused into the hand of Christ. A poignant symbol for the ages of the fire’s devastation. God made sure that a piece of the melted lead gets to remain on Christ’s hand. What all you see and critique says much about what/where you place your values – which in sum may be to you to be much. I’m not starting on all you said about church banners and vestments, oh and the organ and the music!
I am Catholic. I live in Europe. I have been to Notre Dame many, many times. I watched the ceremony. It was lifeless and boring. See the bored expressions on the faces of those attending, listen to the discordant music, watch the silly banners. There was nothing majestic or inspiring about this ceremony at all. Your reply shows you have ZERO knowledge of architecture and the importance of Notre Dame in Catholicism and as a beacon for all people who visit Paris. You also don’t understand French — the Blessed Mother was barely mentioned in this 2-hour ceremony. I reviewed the ceremony, not the restoration. Please settle down.
