Syrian President Bashar Assad remains in Syria as of Friday, though Egyptian and Jordanian officials have urged him to leave the country and form a government in exile, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The advice reflects the regime’s rapidly deteriorating position amid the ongoing offensive being led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebels. They have captured Aleppo and Hama, two of Syria’s largest cities, and are poised to strike at Homs, the last major city under regime control on the road to the capital of Damascus.
The capture of Homs would also cut off Damascus from the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, predominantly Alawite areas that are home to Assad’s most loyal supporters and the site of Russia’s Mediterranean naval base.
Government resistance appears to be crumbling elsewhere as well, with U.S.-backed Kurds taking the city of Deir al-Zour in the east on Friday and rebel uprisings around Daraa province near the border with Israel.
According to WSJ, Assad’s wife and children traveled to Russia last week, and his brothers-in-law have departed for the United Arab Emirates.
The WSJ is encouraging Assad to surrender his country, which means abandoning the Russian ports granting Mediterranian access as well. Were he to do so, Erdogan of Turkiye will rediscover his NATO membership and block the Black Sea as well, and be paid off with under-the-counter oil contracts to be resold to the BRICS.
Syria is key to the alternate pipeline routes into Europe. Iran was historically the key gateway of the southern leg of the Silk Road; Israel wants to be the key gateway of both the pipeline routes and access to the Med.
Qatar and the Emirates will control access to the Hormuz Strait, the Gulf of Aden/Red Sea, and the Arabian Sea. This will give both the Israelis and the Sunnis enormous leverage with China’s Belt-Road Initiative, with OPEC, and with India.
In essence, the Israeli/Sunni control of the Middle East as gateway (and oil depot) is what is at stake here.

In August of this year I submitted a form to have a change made to my social security benefits… It’s been almost 4 months now and the the change has not yet been implemented and I have not received any feedback at all from SSA. The woman at the local SSA office told me that my request needed to be reviewed and approved, and it could be up to 6 months before I would be notified. SIX MONTHS!!
Kudos to the employees who actually show up to work at the SSA branch offices, but I suspect the other 75% or so of the SSA “workers” are “working” from home and only during commercial breaks.
With the saving from reducing the size of DC offices, adequate local personnel could be hired.
The biggest problem with government agencies is often too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
That’s because the jobs at the bottom have too high of a workload to compensation ratio, and aren’t appealing as patronage to reward your cronies with, so you will see unfilled positions that provide service to the taxpayer in order to create more “Special Assistant to the Assistant Director” type jobs.
Agree. Even at the local SS offices there will be only 1 or 2 windows open to deal with the public. Prepare for a 4+ hour wait if you’re not standing in line well before the office opens. Last time I went I was #8 in line outside and it was almost an hour before I saw someone once the doors opened.
My youngest son tells me that when he goes to a supervisor, 9 times out of 10 they cannot provide the answer-and these folks are drawn from his group.
My own experience with SS…I have an appointment for a ‘phone appointment’ to deal with benefits…made the appointment in very early November…the soonest they gave me? Mid January.
And the internet was supposed to make it quicker.
Internet access at SSA is basically worthless. It seems like everything needs to be done using paper forms anyway. Elon could definitely fix that.
I had to go to our local office to get my Medicare part b done. My wife got the same 3 month wait for an appointment. I went to the local office with no appointment, and with my forms and waited about 3 hours.
The majority of the crowd there was under 40 by my estimate, and was mostly Spanish speaking only.
You’d think that most of the folks seeking help from SSA would be over 55, and citizens, but no.
Welfare reform caused many hard core unemployables to seek SSI.
Assume this may be nationwide, but in northern Nevada, beginning January 1, 2025 all meetings with social security offices MUST be by appointment only, and the appointments can only be made online –
I had received a letter about a social security option, called the number provided for a week, each time on hold for over an hour and then a recording “politely” said “all operators are busy” and hung up on me!
So I drove over to the local SSA office, there was a long line, the security guard at the door said to come back the next morning no later than 8:00 a.m. (doors don’t open until 9:00 a.m.) and I might be able to get in; he said those phone hang-ups are called “courtesy hang ups” and built into the system.
I went the next morning, at 8:00 a.m., there were only 10 people in line in front of me. When the doors opened there were about 40 people in line behind me.
On the door was one of those q-code things and one of the people in line used their cell phone to access that and it came up as “Error” so she told the door guard and they promptly went inside to let the people know that code thing wasn’t working. He came out and explained that when it is corrected it will give people the contact info needed to make an appointment since beginning in 2025 there will no longer be any walk-in’s allowed.
Glad I didn’t put off dealing with the SSA until next year, that was the 2nd week of November, my phone-appointment is scheduled for next week. Guess I am lucky that it won’t be 3 months from now.

I just read SD’s statement that Carter issued a blanket pardons to draft dodgers in the Vietnam war. Now, the ‘blanket’ refers to the mass of people who avoided the war. The crime on which the pardon acts is specific.
The blanket pardon was not a blanket on the crime. So, it can be argued that the power of the pardon can only be issued to specific crimes.
I still do not see a precedent for Biden’s pardon. The crimes must be stipulated in order to be pardon. Otherwise, they are not pardoned.
Makes sense to me. It seems to me that indictments could be brought after Biden leaves office.

The crime was not responding to being called-up for active military service. At that time, it was a specific crime.
That era also saw the voting age reduced to 18 because it was 18 year-olds being called up for active military service and the people rightly said if 18 year-olds were being asked to die for their country the least that the country can do is give those 18 year-olds the right to vote.
It wasn’t until years after the end of the Vietnam war that the draft was ended and our military was transformed into an all-volunteer army.
Blanket pardon for “draft dodgers” was a very good thing.
I have no legal skills but have learned the law has odd ways of looking at things.
From a legal standpoint, could Jimmy Carters pardon be legally interpreted as simply as an executive order not to prosecute the draft doggers?
Also, Nixon had already abolished the draft so they would have to be prosecuted for a law that no longer existed.

A US government security official urged Americans to use encrypted messaging as major telecom companies struggle to evict Chinese hackers from their networks. The attack has been attributed to a Chinese hacking group called Salt Typhoon.
There have been reports since early October that Chinese government hackers penetrated the networks of telecoms and may have gained access to systems used for court-authorized wiretaps of communications networks. Impacted telcos reportedly include Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Lumen (also known as CenturyLink).
“I think it would be impossible for us to predict a time frame on when we’ll have full eviction,” CISA Executive Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Jeff Greene said, according to Bloomberg. “We’re still figuring out just how deeply and where they’ve penetrated, so until we have a complete picture, it’s hard to know the exact parameters of how to kick them off.”
The FBI official reportedly said the hackers obtained metadata showing the numbers that phones called and when, the live phone calls of some specific targets [such as?! – W], and information from systems that telcos use for court-ordered surveillance.

Just got thru reading a column that lays out why the Russians are not a military threat to “invade Europe.” Fascinating explanation of the histories of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Turkey.
Plenty of maps and photos. The author is NOT a dry analyst!
Also, mockery of the Democrats, a hilarious story about the author bought his wife a sturdy purse for Christmas at a gun shop, and a photo of Gretchen Whitmer that makes her look like a Nazi camp guard.

Ugh.
Historically, up to 1917, Russia has been the SAVIOR of Western Europe.
They save Western Europe from Gustavus Adolphus and early Swedish Kingdom invasions.
They save Western Europe from various attempts by France, especially under Napoleon Bonaparte to dominate the continent.
They SACRIFICED themselves to save Western Europe from the Prussians and Germans.
I will give them some credit for stopping Hitler but historically Hitler’s 1941 Invasion was a preemptive strike, hidden under the Polish Invasion and “mutual economic pact” of 1938.
Now Russia is defending themselves against an invasion via encroachment of NATO (Western Europe + the US), which is the 2nd invasion of Russia by the Western Powers who intervened in the 1917-1920 Russian Civil War.
I didn’t need to read a lot of history, to conclude Putin had no “designs on western europe” as in to invade and occupy it.
Frankly, who would WANT it?
He has nowhere near the # of troops he would need for such a massive undertaking.
The neocons pushing this war are really taking advantage of the ignorance of history of Americans, and equating “Russians” of today with the U.S S. R. of years gone by.
I’m not surprised at Americans falling for it, but AM surprised at Western Europeans falling for it.

As to the US falling for it …. it is an unsavory part of our history that there has always been a form of imperialistic element mixed in to US Foreign Policy.
What we are seeing today is the re-emergence of that element to become a central driver in our foreign policy for aims not related to the security or growth of the nation as well as greed on the part of some elites. It is 100% pure greed and control on several levels of consideration.
The same imperialistic elements that influenced US Policy have been present in Western European Politics for a long time …. especially with respect to Russia. The Western Europeans have always feared the emergence of an economically and militarily strong Russian Entity.
That fear has re-emerged and is being used by the US to whip the Western Europeans into a kinetic conflict with Russia. The US Deep state has masterfully manipulated the working of the G7 and UN Financial Executives to gain control over Western Europe (i.e. the Mechanisms of the EU and NATO).
Exactly it would be like annexing part of the Middle East and Africa!! With no go zones run by Sharia law, no thanks!!!

Russia is the one who handed the allies victory against Germany AND Japan.
“No, the atomic bombs DIDN’T do it.” The 11-day conquest of Manchuria did, utterly crushing an elite Japanese army stationed there. Stalin promised to be in Tokyo within the month, coming from the WEST. The Japanese knew he would do it.
It now became a question of WHO to surrender to: the Allies, or their ancient enemy. To his credit, Stalin remained “an Ally.”

There is nothing in Europe worth having to the Russians. Trying to control millions of useless eaters wouldnt be worth it.
If europe insists on fighting though, the best value option for Russia is to turn it into an uninhabited wasteland.
Russia is twice the land mass of the United States reaching from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean with half the population of the US. They certainly don’t need more land!
