There is free market capitalism, in the general sense of banks and business, in almost all Muslim countries. Their only problem is that they are often stuck with authoritarian governments that are foisted on them through western coups and wars that are waged against them so that they have difficulty developing. And, as with almost all countries, they have their, figuratively speaking, California/Eastern liberal class and mid-west conservative class, and of course, the very religious groups like the, again figuratively speaking, the Amish or Orthodox Jewish groups with their strict dress and religious codes. Most societies are not monolithic.
These are interesting times, to put it mildly. The endorsement of these Muslim leaders is welcome and significant. Very important.

About the Amish in PA and OH. Traditionally, they don’t really participate in elections. However, thanks to government over regulation and over reach, they went and raided the farm of Amos Miller for producing unpasteurized milk. Add to that the targeting of the Amish vote by the Trump campaign, and you can guess the results. About 185,000 votes that didn’t show up before.
I know from personal experience that the Amish aren’t that different from the mob. When you mess with one of theirs, everyone (and I mean everyone) hears about it. With a Lebanese background I can confirm what you say. The French and British betrayed the Arabs in WW1 when, after promising them independence from the Ottoman Turks should they join the Allies, they instead divided the greater province of Syria into a French and British Mandate, with the French taking the northern part. The French took a census and crafted a Christian state out of the coastal area which had 51% Christians and 49% Muslim. They then framed a constitution which required the President to be a Christian, but not any Christian. the President had to be a Christian of the largest denomination, the Maronites. The Prime Minister would be Muslim, but again from the largest denomination, the Sunnis. The Speaker of the House would be from another sect, and so on and so forth. Therefore, according to the constitution, no Catholic can be the president or prime minister. That constitution is still in place and plays no small part in the sectarian politics of the country.
Regarding the percentages, naturally, over time, they will change. Since the president is Christian much of the development is in the Christian areas and their greater wealth results in smaller families. the Muslims, and in particular the Shia Muslims, were the poorest and as with almost all countries they had larger families. This is why the Muslim population in Lebanon has grown so much. Many of the Shia Muslims live in the south and that is where Hizbollah was formed in the aftermath of the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon in 1982. That’s right, it was a resistance movement to dislodge the occupying Army.
Some say history is boring but it really is fascinating because when you come to understand what happened it gives one insight and perspective. By the way, the promise to the Arabs in WW1 was betrayed by the Sykes-Picot Agreement and it comes up in David Lean’s movie Lawrence of Arabia.

I’ve already responded to your post so rather than write a long one refuting what you have said, why not look up stuff like how Jews in Spain noted a marked improvement in their lives after the Muslim conquest, or how the Christian reconquest resulted in the expulsion of Jews (and the Muslims) and they received sanctuary in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople and all across North Africa. Also, when the Crusaders arrived in Jerusalem they found that even after 400 years of Muslim rule half the population of Jerusalem was Jewish – I first got that piece of information from a signpost in Jerusalem. The reason why there are now so few jews in these countries is because when the Jewish settlers expelled 750,000 Palestinians from what is now Israel the local Arab population didn’t understand that European Jews were not like their neighbours, that they were colonial settlers just like the English in America and Australia who wanted to dispossess the locals of the property. Then, in the interests of securing more Jewish settlers the Israelis used Mossad to create tensions between Arabs and Jews in order to convince the Jews to migrate to “the promised land”. History dear boy, history.

One of the initial definitions that Victor Davis Hanson addresses in The Dying Citizen is the destinction between resident and citizen. It’s really, really important. Not feeling good, so I don’t have the gumption to go into it. I have found his book very valuable but also a hard one to read…some sections go easier than others.

Sharon, give your head a shake and consider the following: a resident has the right to live and work in the US while a citizen is someone who has sworn allegiance to the USA. Without citizenship (or US birth certificate) a person cannot get a passport. Without a passport they cannot travel outside the country, including Canada and Mexico . With that in mind perhaps there are not so many people who are not citizens unless they are illegal and generally living in squalor or hand to mouth. That of course is another issue.

It is the Johnson Amendment and Trump signed an executive order halting the enforcement of the IRS consequences for preaching politics from the pulpit. Hasn’t been repealed yet, but maybe in his second term it will be.
I watched the endorsement speech by what looks like the mayor of Hamtramck, and it sounded sincere and heartfelt.

That was not even on my long list of reasons for voting Trump in 2016, but it’s now right at the top!
Most of them were suspect of vote tampering even back then and – if they were voting by mail- did not drop their votes into the mailbox. They drove them right to the voter places and handed them in directly.
