When I was there, the hottest issue, with 2 universities…was should they stay “Dry” or not. 1976. The townspeople were afraid of the student vote. It was a strong Baptist town then I think. I would not recognize the town today.
Some few years ago, my wife and I visited relatives there. I wore my MAGA hat there even the relatives frantically urged me to not do so. Received quite a few sour looks (some even threatening), but enjoyed my time there.

Keep Austin weird is quite the moniker. Escaped Austin 3.5 years ago. Lake life in the country is wonderful. No 15 minute city stuff. Funny, no panhandling or homeless tents either. Numerous church based and food banks helping feed the poor. Eureka, it’s God’s plan to help the widows & the poor. Not meant for government. Purest religion as James writes in the NT.
I read years ago that the churches used to take care of most of the things welfare does now. You went to church, they saw a need and filled it. Wonderful and like you said, it’s God’s plan.
And the supreme blessing of such a local method of helping the down-and-out is that the “needy” people and families are known by the community; the locals have insight into the genuine needs of their neighbors and are quick to recognize when they are being played.
Far less fraud going on and no third party skimming off the pool of resources.
