In the past 36 hours information to understand the context of devastation in Western North Carolina/East Tennessee has started to slowly come out. Today, we hope more families are able to contact their loved ones, as the number of missing persons continues to rise.
As communication lines start to open up, consider this thread an open discussion link for any information about the isolated impact zone. If you are in the region, let us know how you are doing. Tens-of-thousands remain trapped and isolated.
Thousands of rescue and recovery workers are now arriving just outside the area as officials attempt to patch together a way for relief efforts to reach impacted communities. Most mountain roads and bridges have failed or become severely compromised. Stay safe. Our entire CTH community is united in prayer and support.
Below is a solid representation of status for multiple families.
One Story: “My parents are ok but completely trapped. Yesterday, I hiked up to check on them. Brain spew coming; I’m still processing it all and was just locked in on go-mode yesterday.
Still not having heard from my parents in 48 hours, I was drowning in worry. My parents live in an absolute gem of the NC mountains — the Little Switzerland, Spruce Pine, Burnsville area — halfway between Asheville and Boone. Under normal circumstances, it’s pleasantly very isolated.
Little did I know that up there, Helene has demolished roads, homes and utility networks. **This area is completely cut off from resources in every direction.** I tried multiple routes to drive up but had to settle on parking in Marion at the base of a closed road (Hwys 221/226) and hiking 11 miles and 2,200 feet to find my parents thankfully ok but surrounded by devastation. I have never been so relieved to see anyone ok.
Crews weren’t even close yesterday. I can’t tell you how many failing roads and deep mudslides I had to cross, how many fallen trees I had to take off my backpack for and navigate through. While hiking up 226A, I met multiple people trapped by devastation in both directions of the highway.
In this part of the mountains with steep terrain rolling off the Blue Ridge Parkway, not only did water rise, it RAGED to tear up roads, earth and homes. Then, the winds (I’m certain tornados in some places) have brought down up to half the tree canopy.
I’m still processing it all. I’ve never seen anything like it. Power is a couple weeks out. I cannot fathom how long it will take DOT to repair the curvy roads that hug steep mountainsides with the most amazing views. Most of all, I want my parents to have the same basic needs they always provided me — food, water, shelter (house is mostly ok) and the ability to explore! But they can’t even leave their home right now. The steep part of their gravel road has braided channels only 18″ wide but up to 5′ deep from rushing water.
It’s just a waiting game now. If you are or you have family in the mountains, I feel for you. Know that crews are chipping away.”
A small portion video from Lake Lure to Asheville:

Where is our military? Tennesee’s and North Carolina’s National Guard?
I don’t understand. Didn’t our military go to the South Pacific to help with a Tsunami? Where are they now?
Well, here is Tennessee’s recent info. 700 to Kuwait for a year’s long deployment but 50 specialists to help with Helene.
Tennessee National Guard DeploymentThe Tennessee National Guard has been involved in several deployments and relief efforts in recent years. Here are some notable updates:
“… promote self-reliance in the region, increasing security.”
Infuriating, isn’t it?
Tennesee National Guard was deployed to the Middle East just this past Saturday AFTER the flood.
It’s times like these when most realize we don’t need government , it needs us. Close DC and let Trump run things, he’s doing it anyway.
YES, YES, YES! I sure hope this is a wakeup to many Americans, to REALLY SEE just how unneeded our gov’t “servants” are. Tits on a boar.
From “Tennessean” in Nashville, more on Biltmore Village etc. Obviously some tornado damage mixed in.
I want to say at this point that the “Volunteers” (easterners at least) are, in my eyes, the best kind of neighbors. Maybe it’s because we have much in common (early American history). Roots, Appalachia, it’s all the same. And we share those beautiful mountains, which in this present situation means everything.

Amen!
Isn’t it time for citizens arrest of these people. We pay their salaries.
Agreed.
It’s certainly time for an article to give us the legalities we need to get this done.
I agree, this is needed and over due.
We’ve got a whole lot to do ourselves.. and dealing with crooks is at the top of the list.
Remove them
NC Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson and Donald Trump are there bringing aid and support to Western NC. Mark Robinson was there immediately and hasn’t left. He is performing the duties that the Governor should be doing. While people are in desperate need, Roy Cooper and Josh Stein held a ball for their Demorat cronies from PA. The Demorats do not care about the people. But Mark Robinson does and the mainstream media refuses to acknowledge him.
WORSE, they’ve been trying to turn him into some kind of heartless murdering devil.
Since he hired one of Trump’s attorneys, the media frenzy seems to have died down a bit. But they will keep on. He’s their worst nightmare: Black, male, conservative, Christian.
SO TRUE. Oh how they LOVE to hate him, and so many others like him.
He did an excellent video expose (add the ‘ over the “e”) on LGBTQ+ extremism in grammar school literature. FILTHY mess. Of course that made the evil dimokrats hate him even worse.
The Death Cult hates BMCC’s worse than a hundred Natural Born Florida Crackers with pocket Constitutions and shotguns.
The Righteous Black Man strikes fear in the heart of the racist Democrat like nothing else.
🤣
😉
Thank the dems and NC RINOs for demonizing Mark Robinson. He is a threat to them.
I will vote for him!!
It’s called “high tech lynching”.
See Justice Clarence Thomas.
That was my first proper introduction to the Incredible Husk during that Confirmation fiasco when I was 13. That creep hasn’t excited me from the giddyup.
I’ve watched that atrocity of a confirmation hearing so many times. A smirking, condescending, arrogant, confirmed liar and plagiarist…and man of such character who just sat there staring right at his tormenter, keeping his fury in check.
I suppose you’ve seen the interview Ginni Thomas conducted with her husband?
Best 35 minutes you’ll spend today if you haven’t…
There was something sadistic, reeking of animus, in the treatment leveled at Judge Thomas by YNW (you know who).
I watched the whole of that testimony live.
My opinion of the sadist is the same now as it was then.
She is a gem. He chose well.
And his great statement was in response to who???
BiteMe.
Mark Robinson is being sidelined by his own party here in NC. He is cut from the same cloth as Donald Trump, a man of the people. And as always, the RNC do not want someone they cannot control. They are weak and I will go so far as to say the Republican good ole boys do not want a black man in the NC Governors Mansion and are making sure he doesn’t get ANY press. They never mention him in any advertising. NC doesn’t have a future with another Democrat governor. Mark is the only one to vote for in 2024
Amen, ma’am.
100% agree. This state is filled with corrupt republicans and Robinson is their worst nightmare. I’m praying his leadership during this disaster will get him elected. Josh Stein was partying Sunday in Greensboro while Mark was already on the ground in the mountains.
Do we have pictures from the ball. I bet they speak a thousand words.
He has definitely been taking actions like a real NC governor, and the news media hates that and him around here. They ignore him unless it’s to smear him, period. But he has taken action and seems like he at least genuinely cares about NCarolinian’s. Cooper seems like a dullard or a snob.
Let’s hope this gives his campaign a much-needed boost!
Hurricane rescue helicopter pilot threatened with arrest — for rescuing people.
Insane. “Interfering.” How many times have I heard that kind of craziness, always from people who should never be put in charge of anything.
Communist Democrat obviously.
Throw it back at them: You are interfering with the saving of lives.
That fact will come out no matter your obscene threats.
This happened to the Cajun Navy when they first showed up in
Katrina.. There were told no, they didn;t listen did it anyways and
saved countless lives.. These guys should do that. It would
be bad optics to arrest them.
Sent them $ this a.m.
I am not tooting my horn.
I am tooting theirs.
Donate to these groups if you can.
Reminder of Lahaina. People were told to turn back onto Front Street into the inferno so some found some safety in the ocean.
Reminder of 9/11. People were advised to sit tight and wait for help in the towers.
It always pays to listen to your gut instincts.
This is such an outrage! The Asst Fire Chief, Chris Melton is apparently the person who made this hero stand down.
He and the Fire Chief (Waycaster) should lose their jobs for this. Just disgusting.
I hope nothing happens to that poor old man who is now left alone….
That dear man must be going through hell worrying about his wife and she going through the same – these people need to lose their jobs and be exiled from North Carolina!
My Mom always talks about the nice people she used to talk to from High Point when doing business in the trucking and school bus business – incredibly fine people, so well-spoken.
We are nice to a point. I promise there are people in those hills who will not take kindly to this.
Another true-blue industry that bit the dust, along with all the textile mills in GA & NC.
The pilot’s son was with him.
The vast majority of gubmint is completely incompetent; speaking from personal experience.
pls excuse repeated post. Just checking.
We are in the process of buying baby/children’s stuff, water and ice to fillup our 4×4 truck and run it over there. We’d like to get them as close to the people who need them.
If anyone has contact info of who/where at the local level we can go, please post here. Thanks.
I would suggest Y’All Squad.

I heard Louisburg and Concord have big drop off spots. Lots of churches all over NC are collecting aid to send. Even my dentist’s office is collecting relief supplies now.
He said something that resonated. Our devastation is nowhere near as bad as nc and TN, however, by looking at the tree damage we must have had tornadoes. I have seen trees cut cleanly almost like a saw – that’s tornado.
Upstate sc
Yeah. There are strips of utterly flattened forest right up next to relatively undisturbed woods. Tornadoes are the only explanation.
Glad to hear it was nowhere near as bad in your area. So much of my favorite country was seriously mangled, it’s heartbreaking.
The effing Biden terminated the gubmint contract for Starlink unis to be purchased to be sent to WNC. POLITICS AT ITS WORST. SO, ELON IS GIVING THEM AWAY. BLESS HIM.

“In order for the Awakening to spread, it has to hit everyone.
As it turns out, “everyone” is less a centralized collective and more a decentralized series of nodes that need to be sparked to life via a range of socioeconomic, political, cultural, moral and even spiritual factors.
Enter the Crisis Cascade.
With US dock workers going on strike to kick off what’s sure to be a fascinating October, the squeeze is not just going to be put on the Globalist Trade Machine the US freight and retail economy has become, but more so, on the sleepers in our midst; the sort of minds we all know, each of whom have chosen to ignore the state of their nation, and the sins of the corrupt cretins who would lord over them.
From an inflationary economic squeeze to World War 3 mongering to ANOTHER stolen election, the pain will be multi-directional, because it has to be.
You can either join in with the panic, or steel yourself to be the frame and support you were called, trained and perhaps born to be.

🙏 🙏 🙏 For Gods great Mercy and a Revival unlike has never been seen.
Absolutely, GB…something I’ve been saying often. No one can opt out.
They may believe they can, or that those who are bringing death, destruction, and tyranny down on our heads in a sudden all fired hurry (See Pact the UN has just passed… chains of slavery for the entire world), will give them a pass because they hate President Trump…
“But, but, BUT I voted for you!!!”
No carve out has been bestowed.
We really are all in this together, something we know…and the rest are on the cusp of finding out for themselves.
Our enemy is their enemy.
As they are about to discover.
Agreed Betsy and GB.
There are many Hoity Toities around me that seem to think because they are ‘educated’ or have money in the bank, or have voted as told, or live in the good part of town- that somehow they are now immune from God’s truth and REALITY.
Many of us that don’t play that game know that it’s not ‘IF’ disaster will strike you, it’s WHEN.
There are many hard, costly and painful lessons coming that simply need to be learned to bring about the necessary change.
I agree Revival is the only answer.. and a whole lot needs Revival too.
I think many “insulated by money” people in the NC mountains just learned that lesson.

Thank you for this, GB! My heart is heavy today. Thank you for reminding me to be stronger. To be brave.
The milk has some movement, but it hasn’t boiled over yet. We must be resilient – doing what we can, when we can, and leaving the things out of our control to prayer.
You’re most welcome Wvcaity.
We ALL need a bit of “bucking up” when the bad news is raining down on us.
This one made me sit up and mentally shake off the stream of horrific reports and videos I saw again this morning (third day in a row) and so I knew it had to be shared…
Samaritan’s Purse disaster teams are responding, NC & SC Baptists disaster teams are responding. I’m sure there are others. My personal experience in the past is that the Christian orgs do a heck of a lot better than govt agencies. I’ll be up in Boone on THU. Please pray for the safety of all the people that are there and all the people helping out.
100%.
Samaritan’s Purse is there in a disaster and every $$ you give, gets TO THE GROUND.
Same for the Baptists orgs. They are volunteers and they do an outstanding job feeding and from there, recovery efforts and clean-up.
I was with them in New Orleans (following Katrina) and we feed 3x/daily and cleaned up and cleaned out houses during the other times.
Don’t wait/depend on govt or any politician…
Concord, St. James the Greater Parish is organizing a supply through the Concord airport for delivery to Western North Carolina as part of Operation Airdrop, a national organization that’s arranging aid relief for the region.
Donated to them this a.m.
I am not close enough to collect & help. I can give those who are there helping $.
THIS dude…follow him on X (Twittler). HE IS A GODSEND. A TRUE SERVANT.
Don’t wait on politicians, FIND this guy….
Look at his face.
The love of Christ shines through and on it 🙏🏻💕
Excellent advice:
The “I’m from the government, here to help you” are indeed the most frightening words spoken, as RR quipped so many years ago.
The government does NOT care, unless it can find some way to fleece you or make of you a desperate dependent.
We, the people — must be the nation WE ARE. For reasons to obvious to state: their interests are NOT our interests.
While they conspire to enslave us, our Hero fights with us and for us — and is seen in the countless miracles each day by which He blesses us — Yes truly we are blessed: We praise you for the suffering you allow us to endure, confident you will use it to bring those who suffer ever closer to you. Amen.
Just called the Congressman’s DC office to thank him. As it turns out, his aide is from NC! (Family there is fine…) I asked if there was anything we might do specifically to aid the Congressman in his efforts. The aide suggested MercuryOne.org web site. That site is accepting donations for Congressman Mills to continue doing what he’s doing — reaching the super-isolated survivors.
P.S. I doubt that fire chief will threaten to arrest a congressman.
one of a few situations in which “welfare checks” has a different meaning
… but I guess they don’t use actual ‘checks’ anymore, right?
nimrodman: The preferred term now would be “equity verification,” as in “FEMA visited the disaster area to verify that everyone was equally misearable, and then, we left.”
thanks, bill
like me, you’re a stickler for proper and accurate terminology
God bless these true patriots! Love of fellow man! Love of country!
Contribute if you can!
Looking at the road behind the guy telling that story reminded me of some “hidden” hurricane damage back in the late 90s, in east-central NC. Around Greenville (East Carolina University)…
Near one creek that rose out of its banks, in a very flat area, the pavement was crumbling. Water had risen above the pavement for only a few feet, very shallow, but it was saturating the road bed, making it extremely soft so it couldn’t support any real weight. The road crossed the creek at nearly 90 degrees, and pavement was broken 200 feet or more from the creek. Signs advised us to turn around and find a different route, which we did. Most of the road looked “okay”, but it obviously wasn’t because of the broken areas and several small cracks we could see elsewhere.
This could very well be a potentially dangerous problem in some areas of the devasation, if not many areas. Hilly terrain wouldn’t suffer nearly as bad from “soaking”, but there are also plenty of flat areas in those mountains.
Hurricane Floyd probably.
Well, this is interesting. A significant ($$$$) motive to have the govt’s weather manipulation entity deliberately steer the storm over a certain area…?
Hubby said this was circulating. It’s not like they haven’t been trying to engineer the weather for decades.
I’ve posted here that there are private companies already doing it in the US.
There was a story yesterday that Saudi Arabia will expand their cloud seeding efforts.
https://www.semafor.com/article/09/27/2024/saudi-arabia-to-expand-cloud-seeding-program
Edit to add that this hurricane did behave unusually. I don’t remember seeing one hit at a Cat 4 and maintain that for very long.
Opal ’95
Trust God. Fear not.
Edit to add that this hurricane did behave unusually. I don’t remember seeing one hit at a Cat 4 and maintain that for very long.
Well, they DID have heavy downpours a couple days prior from a low-pressure system
So Helene moving inland over saturated ground might have been somewhat similar to it moving over actual ocean water to some degree … plenty of moisture to keep helping the storm intensity
Glad he is “suspicious cat” on this topic. It deserves a lot more investigating so that more “normie” eyes are opened…
Maui…
That is all.
Oh yes. Where the few structures that had a BLUE ROOF miraculously avoided fire and destruction, despite all homes around them burned to the ground!
(Blue is the color that isn’t affected by the directed energy weapon frequencies…)
Lahaina
This is the sort of speculation that Sundance might find intriguing to pursue for an article (not now, but at a later more appropriate time) — only to find it’s one of the few rabbit holes he chooses not to follow. Like Floyd’s $20 bill.
Well…it *is* still a “theory” despite a LOT of ‘coincidences” lining up….
I think SD prefers a bit more solid, documented evidence, especially when said evidence is in a less-frequented / relatively obscure online location, before he expends his valuable time researching it and formulating his opinions/ conclusions.
This calamitous event has generated and will continue to generate a lot of serious consequences that warrant investigative reporting into the corrupt government entities that have quickly revealed their disgusting apathy towards the victims very possibly because the victims are mostly conservative, mostly pro-Trump, mostly pro-MAGA.
People who have lost everything may be induced to sell.
Bingo. That’s precisely the point that has been made – the destruction AND the lack of federal recovery assistance – may all be deliberate because it is known that hardly anyone in the affected regions has flood insurance… since floods have hardly ever occurred in most of those places. So people will be wiped out financially and cannot rebuild in place. So in swoop the vultures who buy the land for peanuts to develop the lithium and quartz mines…..
I believe you are onto something there.
I live in E TN mountains in the disaster zone.
We used to see planes crisscrossing the skies all the time with their white puffy trails that slowly widen out until the whole sky is a pale funny looking blue. Within 48 hours it will rain steady and soaking.
For awhile it stopped when TN legislature passed legislation banning cloud seeding flights over TN.
Until last week.
We had been in a moderate drought in this region and across the mountain we live on, into NC. One day last week I see the familiar crisscrossing but more E/SE from here. I thought it was strange.
Next thing you know the whole Appalachian is soaked for 3 days just before a hundreds of miles wide hurricane barrels through.
Fishy.
Oh my. The bas tards ignored the law and chemtrailed anyway, just in advance of Helene. But they will deny it and challenge any accusations with “produce proof of your assertions.” It was totally unnecessary since Helene had been in the news and forecasts for a week.
With the ground already wet, there was less capacity to absorb more water, so that exacerbated the runoff – creating the destructive monster even sooner and lasting longer than it might have otherwise (if the “seeding” had not occurred).
They know exactly what they’re doing.
Perusing the SFGATE (SF CHRONICLE) website this morning, not one story on the first page about the hurricane or our hurting Americans.
Something to keep in mind when the Big One hits San Fran?
Na. We deplorables don’t work that way.
This is now Kamala’s Katrina.
It is heartbreaking that so many in the very heartland of America must suffer this way, in the face of so cold and callous a government founded to help them.
As she postures for fake social media photos.
This regime declared war on the American people on their first day.
some below are in a position off tangible help and wonder where to go… check out…sure there are others but make sure they’re legit

Governor Cooper, wannabe governor Josh Stein–AWOL.
Even worse than whats-her-name, LA gov during Katrina. She was only out of sight and hearing for a day and a half.
Blank-O (not Blanco) . . . as in a blank expression, deer in the headlights
I finally heard from my aunt who is at my cousins house in Jupiter Inlet, FL. Thankfully she was not at the family cabin in between Waynesville and Canton. I had not heard from her for several days as she ruined her iPhone deepsea fishing. Apparently the roads to the cabin are gone. The ol’boy who cuts the road up the mountain and maintains it for the neighbors is going up the hill on horseback today to see if the A frame still stands.
Hope all is well as it can be. Despite the focus, nobody is forgetting about Florida or anywhere along Helene’s path.
Waynesville, on the route to Cherokee. I wonder how those folks deep in the Valley are doing.
At least they have clean water creeks(maybe). I am sure the springs may be difficult to locate. I heard WNC woman on Glenn Beck in the car a little bit ago saying she hopes “ever’body is carryin’, SAFETY OFF!”..
She continued by saying “people are turning on each other, who are not bad people, they are just desperate..” It’s heart breaking and infuriating at the same moment.
I usually don’t reccomend the Cheeto Duster but if you have the sand, listen to today’s podcast to hear the woman’s account firsthand. I didn’t do it justice.
Damascus VA has a spring available. Right on 91.
Older Mountain people will know where the springs are.
When people are overwhelmed, even the best can strike out. But it’s a good warning. This is such a heart rending disaster, they obviously were not prepared for 100 year storm.
I’m sure you’re breathing easier, dear brother. Thanks be to God🙏🏻
Amen, sis. Thank You.
“She ruined her iPhone deepsea fishing.”
I’m sorry, that made me chuckle.
Hope the home is fine.
My aunt is almost as catastrophe prone as I am. It must be a Capricorn thing..

Leave it to the brilliant Stephen Miller…
I sure would have liked to see Elon’s face when he read that response.
I now feel like I need to go sit down and focus on deep breathing exercises.
Govenor Kemp is reporting Georgia has lost or damaged 107 chicken facilities.
This is a broiler region where they grow chickens for the butcher market.
The butchering facilities are shut down for lack of electricity.
Ah sh!t! Turkey archery season can’t get here fast enough!
Poultry and egg prices are about to skyrocket once again….
I’m in the beginning stages of reaching out to our local non-profits and churches to see who will be gathering up the containers of household supplies that all these families will need.
Cold weather is coming, so many have lost everything. They’ll need everything..
In this case, money won’t even solve all the issues because the stores are wiped out too.
They won’t have the gas to go driving all over creation.. we need to get it to them.
I had a couple bags of clothes my teens grew out of that were headed to the Salvation Army near me, I’m holding off on this to try and get them down there.
If we all do this, it sure will help I can imagine.
At some point, these people will need everything from furniture to replacing their tools..
Men, clean out the garage and get it on a truck to go down there!
I’m going through my old pots and pans I rarely use and kitchen gadgets.
Think of all the storage units across this nation filled with “Stuff”.
We can solve a huge part of this for them if we do this- I’m hoping anyway.
Good ideas.
Even something that one may feel isn’t good enough, because we don’t want it ourselves; someone who has no plate or fork will not mind getting a set with pieces missing.
I live in NC – about 2 hours from the epicenter of total destruction.
I have an adult son stranded on a mountain. He is a medical professional – a blessing in case of injury or accident.
He hiked 2 miles down the mountain on Sunday to reach cell service – 1 bar.
We spoke for a few seconds. The family is OK. They remain prepared as possible for unexpected weather.
No electricity so no well water.
No gas powered generator (the only flaw in their domicile) No cell service. Water will come from the creek – boiled on a gas camping stove. Their food supply is currently adequate.
The main road – (the only road up the mountain – one road is the norm in these parts) is completely destroyed. That road will most likely not be repaired for months-if in that short a time frame.
Our son’s first comment was “I need a generator.” They only flaw in their “what if” plans. Which is impossible now unless it could be airdropped. Then the issue of gas to run it arises too.
Second comment “We can survive but we may need animal food.” They have pigs and chickens and dogs.
All three animal categories will eat scraps if necessary.
Third comment “Call the hospital and tell them I can’t make it in.” He had no idea that everyone was already aware of that.
I think (hope and pray)they will be fine as they try to formulate a plan to insure survival for their farm animals and make it down the mountain with their dogs so they can return to work.
I have read comments that people should choose where they live based on danger probability or accessibility limitations or hazardous conditions, etc.
My son’s home has been in this location for over 80-90 years – as have many others in that area. Flash floods can and do occur – but the magnitude of this event IS a “once in a 1,000 years” event. I have been privileged to reside all over the US and in another country. All have varying weather conditions and environmental threats. Some occur and some don’t.
But sometimes, there is simply NO WAY to prepare in advance for the unthinkable. It can happen to you whether you believe that or not. So be careful what you judge and speak when you have no idea what it is to live through a catastrophe like this. Most people are doing the best they can with the knowledge and capabilities they possess.
People in these communities are doing their best to help themselves and aid others.
Which brings me to a point I have not yet seen addressed.
To return to work, my son has to
1: Get himself and his necessities down the mountain and then find a way to a road out of the area that is passable
All state and county roads in and out of this entire section of NC are impassable.
2: he will have to find temporary housing
3: he will have to rent a vehicle because the hospital where he is employed is not within daily walking distance. His vehicles are where they are until new roads are constructed.
4: he must endeavor to continue to check on his home and belongings and farm animals
5: he must maintain his income flow so as to provide for himself and his family
6: he is a survivor and will succeed I am sure. But the idyllic life he and his family led may never be the same.
Property and possessions are gone. Lives are lost. Livelihoods are in danger.
The impact of this tragic disaster is wide ranging and will be long lasting on the lives and livelihoods of so many.
We trust God and believe and trust in His plan and His purpose for our lives.
We pray that those who do not know Him will come to know Him through this.
We thank Him for His Word which brings us comfort and hope.
We speak the name of Jesus over all those in need or are scared or ill or lost
Amen
BLESSED They’re SAFE.
i WORRY ABOUT the HOLLOWS Like MONTREAT, BANNER ELK and Of Course – BOONE
LOTS of College Students that ARE RELIANT on the Colleges for Their Well-Being
If you are on facebook, go to the Hendersonville, NC page. You will probably find current info about these places. Read the posts and the comments.
I despise fb but decided to use it in an effort to obtain information – people on that page are posting photos and other info… basically for the entire area including Asheville and all surrounding communities.
I read a comment today from a woman who explained that her husband was “bedfast” from a stroke he had in Jan. When the electrical service was disrupted, his adjustable bed was positioned in a certain level. She asked if someone could bring a portable generator to their home and lower his bed. That was all she asked…
She had an immediate response from a good Samaritan.
These and countless other seemingly insignificant issues are compounded now.
And one more thing:
Always keep cash on hand.
No electricity = no internet services. So, no purchases of any kind with either debit or credit cards or checks. Sooo many people were without cash.
A great argument against 100% crypto.
Another example of a problem most would not anticipate:
“Avery county EMS is requesting
Benadryl chewable and capsules
and epipens as the yellow jackets
are everywhere and people with
allergies are stuck out with all
these yellowjackets. They are
literally everywhere because
their homes are all washed out
and they have nowhere to go and
are aggressive and stinging
everyone. Please share so the
people wanting to bring in
needed items can bring this too
and be aware of the bees for
themselves as well”
Kamala and Obiden sitting on their butts isn’t enough?
The destruction isn’t enough?
Now these poor people have to contend with battalions of pissed off yellow jacket assault weapons!
🙏❤️
Banner Elk is a beautiful area. Prayers for the struggling survivors.
he’ll probably want to buy a capable dirt bike (motocross motorcycle) to get up the mountain for his property checks if the road won’t be re-graded for a while
or one of those 4-wheelers if he’ll need or want to cart goods in and out
For a generator, I would highly recommend a solar version. 4Patriots.com and EcoFlow are the best (after my research). Hubby and I bought a 4Patriots 2000k and 2 days later we had to use it thanks to Helene. It can run in the house (no fumes), you don’t need gas! Once the battery is charged it will last several days. You can run fridge, freezer, TV, internet etc…
You can recharge using solar – it comes with one panel to get started – so no need to hunt for gas. You can also recharge using electricity once the power comes back on and then store it for later use.
We are going to be buying the expansion kit for ours so we can last longer before needing to recharge. Very pleased with our investment.
I hope your son & family will get through this and remain safe!
Amen. Prayers up for your son and his family.
🙏❤️
No doubt…
These comments used to be humorous. No longer, because they’re true.
The script is a constant repeat word salad that doesn’t matter, any small venue will do,… cuz the crowd is already in the film can, per CGI.

I sincerely hope that the fire chief or whoever he was, gets identified online. Just so the locals who survive will know who tried to keep them from surviving.

Could the communication issue have been contrived to limit exposure of this disaster in the news and avoid a “Katrina” moment. 30 days before elections?
YES
Or worse intent than that.

Better days, good memories.
Sadly, this sits at the base of an extremely high mountain ridge, and there were little communities of mostly trailers and campers as you drive down the switchback roads from the ridge into the Sliding Rock area.
There is no way the people living off those roads made it out alive unless they evacuated.
Hubby’s grandparents lived in Burnsville NC. We used to visit the National Forest with them and play all day at Sliding Rock when we were just teenagers and dating each other.
Fun times indeed..
Retweeted by General Mike Flynn…
“This is the update I just got from my lineman friend in Asheville.
Went up old fort road where it connects to number 9. Whole area is gone. 100ft ravine where houses used to sit. Kids walking around naked asking where their parents are at. People BEGGING for water. Black hawk helicopters from fema. I don’t wanna talk about the smell from the dead bodies. I’m in disbelief.”
No matter how much we may realise the (not “our”) government which has cruelly and maliciously abandoned… yes, abandoned… people in this devastation, we do not realise them enough.” 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻
Unconscionable that we don’t have military choppers with thermal tech or at least government thermal drones looking for survivors for extraction to safety.

I know exactly what you mean.
I feel the menace in it. There is no better word.

The smell is Unbearable and Unforgettable!
Day after Camille hit the MS Gulf Coast with over 200 mph storm gusts/winds and a 25+ storm surge, I rode in my father’s 18 wheeler loaded with about 80k lbs of ice to set up the first morgue in Gulfport, MS,.. 45 miles West of the ice plant in Pascagoula, that was also laid waste.
The MS Guv had the MS Nat Guard deliver a 20′ diesel generator to my father’s ice plant to get it back on line as ice was the most important commodity needed then. The local hospital received the 2nd generator. My dad had already stored up as much 300lb ice blocks as possible in anticipation of Camille,… that the Nat Hurricane Center failed to predict its landfall until 5 hours prior to all hell breaking lose on the coast at 11PM that August 17th, ’69 night.
Two Nat Guard trucks loaded with guradsmen with chain saws lead us down the back highways, cutting our way Slowly to Popps Ferry and then Pass Road in what remained of Biloxi. It took half a day to go ten miles cutting the downed pine/oak trees and telephone poles out of the road to the temp morgue in Gulfport that the Guv had set up.
However, unbeknownst to me than,…the receding storm surge had left many dead bodies on the beach at low tide,… Humans and animals alike. Scores of human bodies had already been collected and sat there at the morgue in a 95 degree, baking Sun.
When we got within half a block of the morgue, I jumped out of the truck cuz the stench from the area from the rotting human corpses was overwhelming and truly nauseating. My driver put a rage over his nose/mouth and delivered the 300lb blocks of ice to the loading dock, sans me. The guardsmen also stayed back.
Soon, my dad showed up in a State Trooper’s unit at the morgue and took me back to the Buena Vista hotel remnants on the beach in Biloxi where the guv had his Camille HQ set up. I flushed my nose and mouth with copious amounts of ice water there but the snitch lingered and remained.
To this day, I have not and will Never forget that horrid smell. I can’t imagine what soldiers trapped on a live fire battle field must endure. Once sniffed, you will never forget it.
Prayers for the trapped, surviving Helena survivors.
I was reading your eloquent comment of your experiences, my friend…and half way down a vision of times of war appeared. I saw that you referenced that same vision at the end.
We think, those of us who have never been involved in recoveries, we understand. I can’t imagine. I’m sure with Helene it will be the same as you experienced. Utterly and absolutely beyond heartbreaking.
God bless your father, now passed, for taking you with him, horrifying as it was..and for his selflessness to duty for those who were lost during that life shattering hurricane. A lesson of life and of death which comes to us all. Thank you.
He was a great and caring Christian man who only went to church for christenings, weddings and funerals.
He owned/operated the largest ice plant (ammonia gas) in the South with a capacity of 100 tons a day that serviced the shrimp industry, mainly.
He was given the keys to the City of New Orleans, nearby after the mayor made him in charge of all ice deliveries to NOLA following H. Betsey in ’65. He sent trucks of his ice to Johnston, PA after their terrible flood and did the same for countless hurricane disasters from the Atlantic Coast to Texas for about 55 years.
He sold his ice at just above costs to the Red Cross, Catholic Charities and Southern Baptist, prior to FEMA. After Katrina, FEMA told his sons who ran the biz that they didn’t need nor want their ice for disaster relief,… and here we are.
He also wrote the Small Business Administration Bill that LBJ signed into law to help protect the small Biz Man like himself from the Mil/Ind Complex that was grabbing the lion’s share of Fed Funds in the early ’60s. The SBA has since been driven from his mission as he wrote it.
A former US Naval Officer WWII, Lt JG, he was the subject of the Oscar wining full length feature film, Mr. Roberts, but was very humble about it and didn’t reveal that fact to me until he was 75 years old.
He served as a Page in Congress and for this reason, turned down the offer to a US Congressman/Senator,… recommending “that young lawyer, Trent Lott” from his town. Told me WDC was Corrupt beyond repair, back in 1962 and he got his father out of politics when he was the right hand man of MS Gov Wright as a MS State Senator,… and told me his books were clean as he had audited them.
Compared to him, and his father,… I am just a punk,… but one who was given Great examples of how to conduct one’s self and life.
The Greatest Generation was truly the Best, since George Washington. TY for your thoughts of him,… “Mr. Quinn” as his employees called him.
You? A “punk”????
Somehow I think not, dear sir.
A man of your father’s good character, ethics, accomplishments, honour, and humility does not rear a son without passing those dying qualities on. We know a tree by its fruit. I suspect that he would be extremely proud of you as your pride in him shines through your poignant post…rightly so. Oh how we could use more like him, DaPicayune. I can’t tell you how glad to I am you’ve painted such a loving portrait of a fine and worthy patriot 🇺🇸.
I think you will appreciate this sermon very much in light of what you have written, one given by Father Ripperger at the funeral of his own father. I found it moving and thoughtful about fathers’ most essential roles in a family. Methinks you will agree…all blessings to you, my friend. And thank you from my heart for sharing so much of your father with us…and whether you realize it or not, yourself. B
Such a touching and loving sermon, and so well delivered,…TY, Betsy.
Mr. Quinn was no Saint Thomas Aquinas (my name sake, btw) but he was a devoted Father who raised and educated his nine children with his beautiful and most loving wife.
They were both highly intelligent, scholastic achievers and the only thing that hurt them the most was to see their children squabbling or fighting.
We were far from perfect, but it’s not easy to give each of nine enough love or attention, in the kids view, so argue we did. Mom liking me most didn’t help here Due to my asthma as a child, I received more of her attention.
Dad was very principled, with integrity, strict and very hard on me, of all his kids, all of his life,…but he did live his life as a true Christian as his very moral Baptist mother had trained him.
Three years prior to his death, we faced each other in a court of law as adversaries over my mother’s ancestral land grant real estate holdings that she had asked me to develop for her.
The Navy was building a Home Port nearby with 700 new home buyers or renters coming down to town and she rightly thought the time and market was ready to break ground on her wooded beach front land.
It was a protracted legal contest that he won (he owned the legal joint with friendly ‘home town cooking’ legal pals and judges) but there was no animosity afterwards displayed by either, and though it cost me dearly, I still treated him with full respect as his son.
Ironically, though I lost the legal contracts with my Mother, Dad had introduced me to the foreign MD female guest at his home,… who I married three months after we met (still married 28 years this Halloween, lucky me,…thanks, Dad).
I came out Way ahead!
I knew he respected me more for it and realized how much he truly loved me as his son, later… cuz ten minutes after my wife and I left him terminally I’ll at age 83 in his living room that was full of his family,…I received a call in my car from a brother from Dad’s home as we drove away back thru Gautier to ours in New Orleans.
Brother said, “Dad passed as you drove off the property,… He waited for you to come home to see him last, before his heart gave out and he slumped over in his lounge chair!”
I, no,… we 9 kids were extremely lucky to have been born and raised by such loving, Christian, giving parents (mom was a Devout Catholic, Dad was a Potent Baptist & Catholic) who remained devoted to each other and their family their entire lives.
He also had the looks of Tyrone Powers, so it was easy to like him and hard to despise him.
Yes, at my request, Dad, aka, ‘Mr. Roberts’, received full military honors at his interment.
No, I was not allowed to be one of his pall bearers at his huge Catholic church funeral. Petty siblings.
But, so be it, though he rarely expressed loving emotions towards his children, in the end, he found his singular, silent way to show me his love.
I still feel lucky to be his son. He was loved by all who knew him and he excelled at everything he undertook his entire life.
He was president of his class at Tulane (Biz degree) then on to Harvard for the US Navy Supply School in ’42, before shipping out across the North Atlantic as the XO on a Navy Oiler,… the USS Salinas.
It’s a wonder he survived the German Wolf Pack subs on an oil tanker in WWII.
Later, he side stepped a big political career, but was elected President of the regional and then National Ice Assoc.
TY, for your kind and thoughtful comments, and Yes,.. you also bring out a lot about myself, as well as, ‘Mr. Quinn’.
I’m only now seeing your reply. And all I can say is that each family has its own constructs and all that comes with it. My own father, a surgeon, was very much like yours…the persona I grew up with formed as a result of seeing Korean horrors in his capacity within a MASH unit in front of the front lines there. So I can well identify with your growing up in a house with a man such as your father.
When looking back over our lives, I think it is then we can see how even the difficult circumstances have been integral into leading us to wherever we find ourselves in our later lives. You make the point in telling how you met your beautiful wife. Would we change any part which we’ve lived? For myself on superficial examination, there are some things, yes. Until I realize that changing even one thing would have altered the entire landscape of the life I live now…and the people in it.
A small thing really, but I wouldn’t be conversing with you, for example, had any regrets I have …and I have plenty…been any other way than they were…
Such is life, and such is our merciful God.
It’s a terrible shame your siblings denied you your rightful place at his funeral, and it grieves me to read it…as I am sure it still grieves you to write of it. But you continue to honour your father with this expansive and beautiful tribute to him as the man who loved you very much. I am so moved by your recounting his passing, I can’t express how much. There is a lump in my throat that wasn’t there when I started responding…
In the end we are all human with our individual frailties and quirks. We do the best that we can at the time…angels can do no more…and age makes us wiser, if not a little melancholic. Bless you, DaPicayune, and the bless the memory of your father whom you loved so much. B
Bless You, as well, B….. and respect for your father’s service to our Nation as a MASH surgeon in that terrible, costly war.
I am sure it shaped his character in ways he never wanted to express to his family. My father was the same,…. they didn’t discuss their war experiences,… probably to painful to recall the horrors of what man can do to fellow men in arms.
Surgeons are the best. I was also raised to be one,… and many told me my father would have been a great surgeon for his cool head and calm under pressure.
Instead, after WWII, he returned home to become a Biz Man that took over his highly successful father’s business enterprises, of which there were many,… at his mother’s strong urging.
Mothers (and Aunts), where would we be without them, Mine was the loving Best.
Due to my asthma, I was sent to live with my aunt and uncle in New Orleans for several years on and off to receive treatments as a toddler and then teenager.
Uncle was a famous cardiologist (Tulane Med, ’27) who raised me to be a doctor. My Aunt loved me as her son,… lucky me again.
He taught at Yale Med, was a Dean of LSU Med Sch (charter class) for 38 years and graduated over 5,000 MDs over his career, a real class act, a very humble Catholic Christian who cared little for wealth.
Because he treated five LA Govs in a row, he was able to call in his chits and got Bills passed in their legislatures that funded new medical schools,… he opened three of them by 1973.
Can’t think of a more Noble accomplishment in life to help humanity than sending 5k MDs out into the world. (Take that, Bill Gates and assorted other Big Tech Moguls!)
However,…. I disappointed him when I entered Tulane and told him that I would not be going Pre-Med cuz I believed that I lacked the requisite dedication to practice and teach medicine as he had. I thought that he would want me to Teach as well as practice.
Because I had watched his life, one totally dedicated to Medicine/Humanity (he also penned medical books), I thought that it would hamper or deny me a full family life,… in the bargain.
He told me “OK,….now go get your BA in English and Mass Comms if that is what you want to do, but continue to make your grades in case you change your mind,…. remember, grades determine your acceptance and entrance into any med sch,… and I can’t and won’t help you” (his daughter graduated 1st in her LSU Med class, a cardiologist, her cardi husband was # 10, and his son went Tulane, Yale Med then became an oncologist at Johns Hopkins,… a truly medical family, highly intelligent, they read constantly.
Yet, my Uncle understood and never criticized me or expressed his disappointment in my decision.
As you say,… No Regrets,…. one small change can alter an entire lifetime,… Twain and others have written about this theme.
Because I had always been the Black Sheep in my family of nine kids (I even boycotted the big family reunions with over 200 in attendance in our ancestral home in Gautier when I lived in Houston),… the snub at his funeral was just another chance for me to respond with benign, quite dignity.
Mom always appreciated that response form me while others snickered as kids do.
It did rub my lovely wife the wrong way,… she still resents the avarice driven, greedy and jealous younger sister who controlled my elderly father and pushed him into filing his Lis Pendens law suit to stop my mother and me from the real estate development deal,… but I tell her to ‘let by gones be bygones’.
Dads’ heart was never really into the fight, IMHO, but fight he did with cunning and back channel cleverne$$,… his trait – ( “$ well timed and placed can achieve anything”, he once told me at age ten).
My wife was an only child also, raised by her aunt and her wonderful grandmother Sophia (an Upensky from Moscow) in Riga, Latvia, so she doesn’t share my fondness for being raised in such a fun circus of nine siblings,… that tempers any potential bitterness from me now.
Dad was the same until he got his only brother (my land deal defense lawyer) at age ten. He named his wooden skiff, “I am Alone” before Uncle John was born,.. so I understand their points of view, as well.
Yes, we all “do the best we can with what we’ve got” (Dads famous response) and as for the angles,… well,…today, 10/2, is the day the Catholic Church honors our Guardian Angles.
May yours’ continue to watch over and protect you and your loved ones, Betsy.
Forget that lump,… I recently wrote regarding the passing of a loved one that, at best, it should remind all present at the funeral that it should serve us all as a immutable reminder that this life and all that’s in it is all we will ever have,…. so best to get busy trying to love better those close to us and to threat others with respect where due,…. while we still have time and the will to do so!
IMHO,… Our entire lives are a non-stop learning experience, long after our graduations.
While some learn from their experiences, good and bad as well as their mistakes and grow to attain wisdom and perhaps a modicum of peace,… others continue to run into that brick wall of life’s lessons only to endure more pain, sans improvement. More’s the pity.
They say change is hard for humans to adapt to, yet in this known universe of ours, change is the only constant known,… so best to get busy learning, changing for the better and living a more full and hopefully enjoyable life while we still can.
Hope you agree, and thanks for your lovely thoughts and comments, again. DaP.
A very encouraging post DaPicayune, thank you.
Welcome.
Desantis says he is sending air assets. Hopefully NG. And where is NC’s National Guard and Army?? If Desantis is sending his because NC’s is all overseas, shit should hit the fan. Pardon my language.

Some accounts say that about 125,000 registered Democrats and 185,000 registered Republicans are in the affected areas in NC. Don’t have a count for the Independents. But I fear for the election results in NC if this Republican base cannot cast a vote. We need those western conservatives to offset the crazy liberals in the big cities.

Business as usual in the Middle East. Yawwwwn…
Right now, I really do not care.
How many of the North Carolina National Guard were deployed to assist in this “effort,” rather than taking care of business at home? How far would the $8 billion we just gave Israel have gone to rebuild devastated American hamlets, towns and cities?
“Heck of a Job,… Joey & Kammy & Governor Roy!”
It ain’t our fight. It ain’t our soil. They ain’t Americans.
NC/TN/SC/GA/FL is pure America with Americans suffering.
Bring home the aircraft carriers, supporting ships, planes, and people.
Put ’em to work helping Americans.
Let the Middle Easterners work out their own problems.
We’ve got an invasion going on every day, across our southern border.
We’ve got an opiod/fentanyl invasion destroying our country from within.
Crumbling infrastructure, even before hurricanes hit.
Ukraine ain’t our business either. They’ve got a beef with their neighbors that goes back a thousand plus years. Ain’t none of our business. There’s no American security issue at stake there.
Leave them alone and let them settle it themselves.
America First.
The circled area on your map isn’t nearly big enough. Catastrophic destruction extends farther north into Upper East TN and SW VA. Look up Erwin, TN (where people had to be rescued from the hospital roof), and Damascus, VA. Even in areas beyond that, which weren’t so hard hit, power has been out for days.

Well it seems you can’t live near an ocean or in the mountains !
People have said to me (AZ resident), “I don’t know why anyone would want to live in the desert.”
What’s happening with eastern Tennessee?
Seems to have been forgotten, esp. by MSM. The weather channels, esp. only talk about NC . . . : (
I’ve been to Little Switzerland. Steep driveways that I could never get used to. So steep! I couldn’t live there. Beautiful area and sweet people who might ask if you’d like a “hot toddy’ and it takes you a second to understand what they are saying because that is unusual. Also, if you’ve ever seen the road crews who mow the grass kind of hanging on the side of a mountain, it’s wild. So scary looking.
The media made fun out of DeSantis when he created the FL State Guard. They accused him of building a private army. Well, these guys have sure done a lot for people in a time of need, and now he is using them to help people stranded in western NC.

Ironically, I had the chance to speak with some guys doing restoration on a flooded grocery store on Friday.
I asked what they were going to do with the meat which had not had time to spoil)
They said the store had insurance. So they were going to run it all through the register. And throw it away.
