Up early this am because our son (the baby, at 53!) is in pre-op awaiting a total ankle replacement.
He suffered a devastating injury about 20 years ago playing hockey – went “into the boards” feet first. After multiple surgeries, he is still in pain most of the time. The good news from that day is that
had he slid in head first, he most likely would have broken his neck. We are all hoping and praying that this is the answer.
He is a faithful, loving, caring man, and I know that any prayers my Treeper friends offer will be most appreciated. Thank you. ❤️ 🙏

Glorious news!!! Now for the healing. Sounds hopeful, sis. Remembering my displaced surgically repaired with plate wrist fracture of some 9 years ago. Suddenly, then all at once…today I forget it even happened. May it be the same for your son 🙏🏻💕
He can’t return to work for 4 months. Must keep his foot above heart level for one of those. He cares for his MIL with Alzheimers so ……… somewhat problematic. He lives an hour away, but we plan on going to help with things. Possibly helping him to get home health, if he will accept. His birthday is soon, so, got some ideas rolling around!
How much caregiving does his MIL actually need? There are home health care services that specialize in filling in those gaps. Or, and this depends on her doctor’s judgment, it might be appropriate to bring in a hospice service. Medicare and health ins should pay for that. They did for my late wife and proved to be invaluable. Keep us informed, love. . . 🙂

She’s in fairly good general health for 86 years old. Uses a cane for pretty severe knee problems. A very very pleasant and happy lady. Always smiling. I’ve been friends with her for a long time and enjoy her company. I can be talking to her and forget that she won’t be remembering anything I’ve said! She’s forgotten most of the main events in her life. 😥
My son and DIL have to arrange and cook all meals, do laundry etc, and be sure she is safe. She wanders at night and gets lost in a relatively small house.
One major problem is that they both still need to work in order to live. We can help with some of the financial issues – but they are very proud people, so we must tread carefully.
I am definitely going to mention the possibility of Medicare helping with the situation. That would be incredible. Many thanks for the suggestion and your thoughtfulness. ❤️

The local Alzheimer’s Association can provide useful advice—this won’t have been their first rodeo. A lot of what your MIL needs is be “filled in” by other home health care individuals who come to perform specific jobs like bathing, bed changing, doing laundry, etc. This can also be done by a Hospice service.
There is also a nationally based Alzheimer’s Association that can provide good recommendations. I registered with them and was immediately given a counselor. Point being: there is quite a lot of useful info out there. Your son should be able to get the rest he needs while also getting his MIL’s needs met.

I got that ” Mama means it glare” down pat! He is a believer, and has a wonderful attitude about life in general.
He managed a large grocery store at one time. He would take some of the poorest folks who shopped there to the deli counter and buy them a meal – and tell them to ask for him if they were hungry and he he would feed them if they were tempted to shoplift.
One fella came in every week for “half a cake.” My son’s district supervisor told him he was not allowed to sell half a cake, so unbeknownst to this old gent, he would buy the whole cake and tell him it was on special for half price.
He’s had some pretty tough breaks in the past couple of years, but, doesn’t complain. I love being in his company! 😊

Every year turkey vultures (aka buzzards) gather and roost in our tallest trees. Sometimes as many as 40 or 50! The first year, I thought I’d better update my will, but I’m still here, and they’re still coming!
They are starting up again and soon will be in full force. Its really quite a spectacle. I’m going to try for a decent picture for you this year. They’re really quite beautiful. 🐦⬛ 🐦⬛ 🐦⬛ 🐦⬛ 🐦⬛

Afternoon, dear Bet. Haven’t been an early riser in quite awhile. Was up early regularly when I was teaching—office hrs started at 8.
Me and Little ‘Tink love sleepin’ late, nowadays. Darlin’ kitty likes to stay curled up on my shoulder until I get up. I think we’re both looking forward to those cold, 3 blanket fall mornings.
Doing that always reminds me of winter mornings at my granny’s drafty old house. I could poke my 9 yr old nose out of a toasty warm bed . . . and see my breath. Eggs and bacon cooked over her old wood stove smelled great and always seemed to taste better for some reason.

Like you and Tink, I’m hankering for colder weather, too. Had just a mild taste of it about a week ago. It was wonderful. But because this is Texas were back up into the normal. Dry as well. We are desperate for rain.
Your memory triggered mine of long ago….my in-laws converted their expansive attic into a boys’ room when the lads were younger. It was accessed by steep stairs and was open.
When my first daughter was born, we slept upstairs; and in the early morning I would take her down to the kitchen right below where my beloved mother in law was cooking breakfast. Then I would crawl back upstairs and back into bed for a few extra minutes of shut eye.
I say “shut eye”…but what I was doing was making a round of mental cocktails, listening to her talk to her granddaughter (nowhere near talking but chattering right back at her in her own language) sitting in what was called a car bed while she waved a whisk and a spatula about.
I made strong notes of those happy sounds and took in every detail of the room where I was…because even then I knew such times wouldn’t last long. I’m there now by virtue of leaving this post.

Yes, the Telemann Allegro was so joyful, I had to post it. You may have noticed the accompanying playlist where you can find the first and second movements, as well as a selection of other works, many arranged by Rolf Smedvig (RIP) whose playing I’ve posted before.
He is still for me the finest trumpeter I’ve ever heard, Alison Balsam and Winton Marsalis not withstanding.
Still remembering a comment from one of his classmates at the music school where they both studied. This classmate said yes pass a closet where he could year from within Rolf practicing. He would stand there listening, asking himself how in the world he (the classmate) ever could rise to the level of precision and talent he heard from that enclosed room.
And like you with Pepe, I was so privileged to hear Rolf perform with his group Empire Brass in the small East Texas town where I lived long ago. His performance, as with this Telemann, absolutely astounded me. Perfection! I had no idea he would rise to international acclaim, rightly won.
So glad you enjoyed. Please give your precious companion loads of “Auntie Bet” snuggles who delivers them with gratitude that you and she are such a loving team. Makes my heart very happy to know you both have one another for company 🤗😘😽

When we stayed at my Vermont Grandma’s house, the only heat was a vent in the floor that brought a small (very!) amount of heat up from the ground floor. You could see your breath. We would call her beloved German Shepherd, Pokey, to come keep us warm in bed. But, believe me, when Grandma said, “time to get up,”we jumped like “pop goes the weasel!”
She was a schoolteacher.

The God to Whom We Pray
Always remember, the way we view God
impacts how we pray.
So, I just re-read the entire Lord of the Rings books, including The Hobbit. Again. For the umpteenth time in my life and somehow came away with a new perspective. Now I know it is an old fantasy book and it doesn’t matter much when all is said and done. But I found new meaning in the last…well 6 hrs or so of it. Which is probably like the last 5%.
It’s a long series.
Anywho, there were two things, maybe three that stuck out to me this time around. Especially within the context that Tolkien started writing all of this during and then just after WWI and being in it.
The first was Frodo’s PTSD. Well, what we would call PTSD these days. He was so shaken by the events of what he went through, that barely a year after coming back to the Shire and setting things aright, he had to flee to the West (Valinor), the gift he was given by Arwen to take in her stead if ever a time he needed to. Apparently he needed to ASAP.
Which is awfully sad considering it was Sam and not Frodo that was the true hero in the story. But I am getting ahead of myself because…
Second, Sam was the hero, not Frodo. When the going got tough, Frodo passed out. Sam carried on. In one case literally carried Frodo. The only time Frodo ever stood up for himself and fought was when someone tried to take “his precious” from him. Even Sam. Kind of a jerk was Frodo. Sam ,the ever-dutiful servant and Frodo the ever-douche of the Nine Fingers. That should be the song.
OK, one more…all jests aside, all of the hobbits, and especially Frodo, on their return to the Shire, particularly after the rather short events of the Scouring and setting it all aright, are real when it comes to men coming home from battle. The home you left is changed. Everyone looks at you different. And you will never be the same or accept the “new normal” because you went through the “stuff”.
Tolkien understood that because he did it. He lost every single friend he had in WWI, in the trenches. Came home and the freedoms he knew were erased in the name of “there’s a war on!”.
We are all facing this today, even though an actual war isn’t on yet…unless we lay down and sleep and let it become one.
There is so much applicable wisdom in these old books, it is a shame how many people won’t read or listen to them because “it’s just fantasy”.
You’re deluding yourself if you think a good book has to be “proper fiction”. The greatest art is often the most vulgar, at least in the manner of how those who consider themselves great connoisseurs think.
The vulgar often makes the most poignant offerings of commentary on the contempary.
I’ve been in the lotro game for over 15 years and its a truly wonderful passtime and very relaxing to be able to spend time with those little hobbits 🙂

Interesting insight about this series. I have all the books, dvd’s, and cd’s. I too have read them many times, watched the movies, and listened to the cd’s when working around the house. Sam really was the hero, he was always there for his master. I don’t usually find anyone that has enjoyed the series like I do. Nice to hear you have read them more than once. There are always new things to find in each book.

1. -Following the Beeper attack there is a report that Hezbollah was close to exposing the plot which caused a premature use of the beeper attack.
-As I reported before it turns out to be true. A senior IDF Commander hints that the hold up is because the US is very strongly against a menouver into Lebanon and we need back up when it happens, munitions, etc…
-Important: The IDF is moving Division 98 from Gaza to the North border with Lebanon.
Div 98 are the best that we have with the Commando Brigade as part of it with some of the most elite units of the IDF. They crushed the strongest Brigade of Hamas in Khan Yunis and were also in Rafah. This means that it’s getting serious at the North.

A second wave of attack after the beepers.
Now Walkie Talkies are exploding all over Lebanon.
There are more explosives in those. So far 300 injured and 9 killed and the numbers are rising.
This is more strategic than the beepers and it’s the live communication lines of Hezbollah. Major panic in Lebanon. Fires in apartments and stores and vehicles. There are reports of also cellular devices and solar panels and some appliances blowing up. At this time it’s hard to tell but the Walkie Talkies are for sure. Hezbollah ordering everyone to stay away from devices that carry batteries. They say the Israel is using high frequencies to blow up devices. (I think it’s the panic and practically the Mossad had a successful project of dominating their communication lines.
Hezbollah was firing rockets today and Israel is on a serious bombardment of South Lebanon.
Israeli jets are breaking the sound barrier and adding to the panic.
If this follows with a maneuver it will be a historic use of electronics as a first stage of a campaign.
Biden is pressuring Israel strongly to back off. We shall see.
We are now moving Div 98 from Gaza to the North.

Recently had family members diagnosed with Dementia, and as anybody with experience will acknowledge, is probably the most tragic “thing” a person will witness. Slowly watching what you used to know changing. In my way of coping with such I often defer to an almost comical or “good outcome”. This is when we need to listen to our inner voice, connected to God, in truth and humility, and LISTEN for His messages – often inside a post, or a verse/chorus of a song that rings a bell in a verse you just read, or in some manner keeps “poking” at you. Could be in the clouds, the weather, nature, poetry, art, even through the junk of the establishment. If you listen in honesty and with as much an unbiased heart as possible, with much prayer and request for guidance, one will definitely begin to not only “hear” but “see” God. “I am with you always” . Thank you all for the support and advice. Yep, sometimes I wonder just how much the Creator can or will place on our plates. (before we lose it). I understand the “never more than one can handle” answer, but I remind myself that a lot of very worthy good people were put through and did what I, and I guess most of us would consider way past our ability. Imagine us today with the prospect of being thrown to the Lions, or sawed in half, or burned. I cannot even imagine how strong these people were. Testimony to just how powerful faith is – beyond this world.
I’m certain Garrison and yourself (all) with experience, will remember that without help and guidance from above, there is no possible way, one would have made it, without crashing into despair and bitterness. So far it’s just one day at a time, lots of prayer and trust that somewhere someday there is a great big silver lining.
That isn’t preaching.
It is truth.
Initially; and for some time thereafter, it can be very hard to keep from falling down to the floor … and cry like a baby; Who is this person? Where is my loved one???
The swings can be quite confusing, surprising, …difficult to navigate…. fatiguing and frustrating.
As with witnessing any loved one’s severe decline; dramatic change, due to illness, I find it remarkable that the ‘new’ person becomes —almost normalized. We adapt.
Yes, one has to find a way to communicate… to reach that person… to go to that person’s ‘place’… , and hopefully gain and maintain that person’s sense of trust; ensuring security through stability.
– It can be extremely surprising; definitely requiring God’s guidance, when told or asked, “Am I losing my mind?” , or being told , “I know I’m different than I was before.” or asking what time a certain dead person(s) left today…..phew!!!!
Honesty is very important
-as are the possible interpretations by one’s choice of words in reply.
It can be quite a balancing act helping someone (doing just about everything for someone) while not letting that someone know how much help is necessary.
Laughter and calm and listening can wonders.
Condescension is a no no.
-Love brings patience and respect. The rest follows.
