Well, happy Labor Day weekend to CTH readers. My daughter recently bought her own horse. A summer job and she has satisfied a very long dream of hers.
We decided to try and find a rodeo for our kids to watch. Both kids went to a western store and got their nice looking boots for the event.
We found online a rodeo event in Mcbain Michigan. A 5.5 hour drive, so on Saturday we were up very early and off. Absolutely beautiful drive through upstate Michigan. Beautiful farm country. We saw an apple tree growing along the road and stopped for wild apples. We located the rodeo event and found out that we could not get evening tickets until 4:00 so that gave us time to check into hotel.
We came back for the evening rodeo event plenty early and glad we did. Absolutely sold out and packed. Seating was impossible to find later on.
The rodeo opened with the national anthem, prayer, and a stellar salute to the vets. They even had a 97 year old WW2 vet standing and holding a flag. Absolutely eye watering event.
My kids thoroughly enjoyed the entire rodeo. Clean and wholesome. Wonderful contestants. Beautiful animals.
Sunday morning we had small breakfast at the hotel and headed home. We stopped in Midland to attend church. Seriously if I lived anywhere close to Midland this would be my home church.
Fantastic weekend. Plenty of Trump signs all along the journey.

midland, MI (the city) is S.E. of mcbain, and wouldn’t (presumably) be on your route in order to be in upstate as well.

We crossed the border at Sarina. I followed GPS but I believe we took 75 to 10 and then 10 north west up to Mcbain. We could only find hotel in Evart so Sunday morning drive home we left from Evart and not Mcbain. Midland was en route.
I assumed Mcbain would be considered upstate?
Much of driving around Mcbain to Evart was done on secondary roads. This part of the country was where I truly felt at home. Very large dairy farms. I even saw an old Allis Chalmers tractor that I was tempted to see if was for sale. The tires for these old girls are getting hard to find. My dad and I are building a WD 45 for my farm up north.
This is the old girl pre-repair. My dad has done a ton of work to get her up and mobile.

were the most frequent comments among the eligibles.

i can recall even at that young age being so taken aback at the attitude as these were the children of WW2 veterans,
where draft dodging was virtually non-existent.
don’t know what to think about the “dads who would pay”.
so, no, the hippies weren’t against war,
they were against a war they might have to fight in.
not ideology – selfishness, c.y.a., and an attitude of letting some other poor guy go instead –

Different place of upbringing, our local boys fought, repeatedly. Multiple tours, we lost so many. Those who came back, did not consider themselves lucky. Yes there were hippies, just not everywhere. I remember our boys, back when men were men. These men went on to raise men. Thankful for different values, being brought up in a different location.

I just looked up the recipe for making pepper jelly.
My pepper plants have produced a lot of peppers this year. Red and Green Bell Pepper, Jalapeno and Serrano. I asked my wife to make some pepper jelly, she has in the past and it came out really good, but she seems to be busy with other projects and has no time for it, so I will do it myself.
The recipe calls for 5 cups of sugar. I think I will label the jars, pepper flavored sugar.
we got a robust turnout of our peppers as well!

On this Labor Day I’m thinking about how the attitude and work ethic of the young people entering the workforce has changed over the decades. When I entered the workforce, I planned my social life around my work schedule. Now those entering the workforce do just the opposite.
I remember telling my friends, “Sorry, guys, I can’t go camping with you this weekend, I have to work.” Now, the kids tell the employer, “I can’t work this weekend, I have to be with my friends.”
I see new faces working at the local grocery store all the time. I asked the owner about it. He says hiring now is a never-stopping, revolving door. He hires these college students, trains them, and then they quit after a few weeks when they learn they can’t have a week-long vacation after having just started. They also don’t want to work weekends because “that’s when I’m with my friends.”
How did this happen?
I know you asked a rhetorical question, but I can’t resist giving my two cents.
short answer: breakdown of family.
longer answer: due to this breakdown, the “parents” let them get away with it. The mom is too busy finding a new boyfriend, and the dad is too busy with his new girlfriend’s children.
the “parents” probably don’t even know what the kid’s even doing half the time 🙁

I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. “Father God, I am anxious tonight and struggle to fall asleep. Rescue me, Lord, and deliver me. You are my fortress, my strong refuge, to which I can always go. You are my hope and my confidence. Be near to me and come quickly to help me. Comfort me once again. I praise You for Your faithfulness, God. You have redeemed me, and I will always have hope.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
