Two points to make, the first is an indication, the second an observation, both suggest that the Kamala effect is beginning to affect her campaign.
The first is this decision is an indication that her campaign staff are split as to which strategy to pursue, which accords with things I’ve read and heard about. This format reeks of a compromise between two sides, she does the interview, but it’s not live and bizarrely she’s going to be with her VP pick, as they say a compromise is the worst of both worlds and this certainly is.
The second point, linked to the first is that this agreed format runs the risk of falling foul of the paradox of camouflage, which is the more perfect the camouflage the less effective it is. They have CNN, they have a toady interviewer, they have it taped and with Walz to act as a minder, perfect, right. Wrong. This does not camouflage Harris’ weaknesses it highlights them, just like deceptions that rely on getting everything right do the opposite to what was intended. Why is it not live, why is Walz in attendance? These questions reinforce, in all but the most partisan minds, the doubts people have, about the candidate’s competency and lays her campaign open to ridicule from the Trump campaign and SM.
