Here’s a few words about guns . . . For me everything changed after Sandy Hook. As a teacher I acutely felt the danger of a deranged shooter in a school full of innocent kids and teachers. Had there been just one armed and trained
shooter there . . .
I purchased my first ever handgun shortly afterward. Living in Texas made that relatively easy. For awhile, I was comfortable with the idea that I lived in a pretty safe place. If I ever needed a gun, I had several. I’d known how to shoot since childhood and I was confident. But, then reality impinged. I distinctly remembered an encounter at a Lowe’s big box store. A guy began asking inane questions as he tried to get into my personal space between cars.
Alarm bells going off, I put my hand up and loudly told him to stop. My hand was on my gun . . . Fortunately, he realized he’d been “outed” so he left. Did he think I might defend myself? I sure hope so.
I’ve sense discovered that almost all of my female friends have had similar encounters. This seems to be a pattern. If you are old and/or female you are going to be vulnerable.
When I go to my bookstore after my Sunday breakfast, I like to drink coffee and read magazines. Of late I’ve been reading various gun-magazines. Their editorials are disturbing. All agree that our country has become a much more dangerous place. The traditional “situational awareness” admonitions no longer seem to apply—every public space (especially in coastal cities) are now quite dangerous . . .
My point in writing this is to raise an important question. Should you arm yourself? I raised this question to myself awhile ago and it required a cognitive reorientation.
I’ve come to realize that, as a gimpy old guy with a cane, I’m vulnerable. I make a good target for the “clockers” out there. I’m not armed all the time, but I’m grateful to live in a state where, when I feel the need, I can legally arm myself for self defense.
So. Here’s my question. Should you arm yourself? That’s not a question I can answer for you, although what I really want is for you to be safe.
Sadly, I think we are in a time where there are situations where not being armed will make us profoundly unsafe. I realize that for a lot of us here, this will be a challenging question. My suggestion is that this is a major life-change. But, reading numerous thoughtful editorials has caused me to understand that our everyday life has changed . . . and changed for the worse.

I always compare it to a seatbelt – you wear it always, because you don’t know when you will need it.
I understand how you feel and why. My late wife decided she wanted to get a gun and concealed carry permit, being concerned with the world she saw all around us. We both did just that. And that situational awareness is so key to the entire message. Ironically, (and also logically) the most dangerous places are also the ones who make it most difficult to own and carry a weapon. We used to live in San Francisco. Excluding law enforcement, there are EIGHT concealed carry permits in the city of San Francisco. Even the EMTs were denied permits, despite having to go into neighborhoods and situations which are quite dangerous.
There is a phrase that has stuck with me… and it was brought home watching the TV show “Live PD”. There were a number of times where a call came out about a shooting and the officer raced to the scene, lights and sirens both on. On many of those occasions the network stayed with his car for awhile and then went to commercial because it was going to be several minutes before he arrived on scene. The phrase to remember: “When seconds count, the police are only minutes away”
More aware….and armed….. now more than ever before. I’m a very responsible gun owner and carrier. I live in rural Arkansas but the state has changed over the last 10 years or so. I travel a lot to the big cities and my “situational awareness: becomes very elevated on those trips. A.B.C. is great advice

I’m so glad you are carrying, because I want You to be safe. I’ve had a CCW since 1994 when it became available in AZ.
I have had the unpleasant experience of drawing my weapon on a couple of occasions. Fortunately, I didn’t have to fire.
I wish more women would carry. They are actual or perceived easy targets. Lloyd and I both became certified to teach gun safety. We’ve taught our daughter and granddaughter to safely carry and they do. The other grands, we gave pepper spray. Doesn’t really measure up, but better than nothing, I guess.
My issue isn’t carrying a gun. My issue is that I’m not sure I could actually shoot someone. Therefore, having a gun on me that I probably wouldn’t use just makes me more dangerous to myself and others.
I’ll go with pepper spray.

My family has been well-armed for years and practices strict gun safety.
I’m no expert here, but have thought about several issues in my state of Georgia.
Yes, we have the “right” to bear arms – and use them – for self-defense.
However, if you have to shoot someone for this reason, the case will go before a grand jury.
They will either indict or give “no deal.”
The key here: the district attorney controls the grand jury.
It’s been said that “a grand jury can indict a ham sandwich.”
The county where the shooting incident occurs is huge.
If the DA is a Democrat, or the county where incident occurred is Democrat, that could spell trouble, as a conviction is very possible.
Frankly, a person is a greater crime risk in the Demoncrat counties.
However, Neal Boortz once said on his radio talk show, he’d rather take his chances with twelve jurors than six pallbearers …
Georgia became “Open Carry” in 2022, meaning one is not required to have a background check before obtaining a firearm. Nor does it have to be concealed.
This unnerves me, when lately I’ve noticed very young men wearing guns in their pants, or in holsters.
I’ve had gun safety trainings and a “Concealed Carry” permit for years prior to “Open Carry.”
Hopefully, the training and permit would show that personal responsibility was in play if ever necessary to use self defense.
My biggest concern is gun owners without knowledge of gun safety, and the related laws.

In a few of the weapons training courses I’ve taken, there is emphasis on the potential legal and hefty financial consequences of using your weapon to defend yourself.
Years ago, when I was divorced and a single mom, a man (stranger) tried for a couple of hours to break into every door and window of my house. I called the sheriff multiple times. They were struggling to find more than 1 unit to respond, as it was “too dangerous” to send only one!!!
When I told them I was armed and ready they finally sent a unit. Couldn’t find the perpetrator, but threatened me with arrest had I shot him!
Well, my future husband who came from his home an hour away did find him skulking in the bushes.
Turned out he was a fed of some sort (at the wrong house!) – they refused to be more specific.
My point, I think you would use a firearm to protect yourself and family. I know, for sure, I would. It is up to us.

I was in my apartment with my two y/o daughter asleep.
Around 11 pm, someone began breaking the window glass.
I was unarmed, and helpless. Such a terrible feeling!
I screamed, called 911, and a neighbor.
While waiting on help, locked myself in my sleeping child’s room, and I kept getting dizzy, struggling to keep composure and sanity.
I do NOT ever want to be in that predicament again!
Besides, tho my county is red conservative (for now), I’ve heard some stories from the sheriff’s dept about home invasions here.

I think mom tossed them all as we got in to too much trouble with them … they just kinda disappeared.
Baseball lost me in the strike years of the 80’s. Did go to 1 Reds game in Chicago in the early 90’s with my brother … he nearly got arrested … he bought scalped tickets & found some better ones and tried to sell the ones he did not like … cop intervened…. he probably would of been OK to scalp em if he wasn’t wearing a Reds hat.
As I recall someone either stole his battery or tried to steal it while we were in the game.

So when the 75 WS happened, it was indescribable. I scored each game by hand for my wasband (stole that from Patience!) who worked nights.
As I recall, it was very late when Fisk hit that homer. I jumped up yelling and woke the kids – was worth it!
When Fisk jumped up and down, waving his arms to try to will the ball not to go foul, which all somehow worked ALL of us here in Boston and New England were positive that Boston would win Game 7. How could they NOT win after one of the most dramatic moments in one of the greatest games ever ???

It is not a handbox life.
Am I preventing God from doing things in my circumstances because I say it will hinder my communion with Him? That is an impertinence. It does not matter what my circumstances are, I can be as sure of abiding in Jesus in them as in a prayer meeting. I have not to change and arrange my circumstances myself. With Our Lord the inner abiding was unsullied; He was at home with God wherever His body was placed. He never chose His own circumstances, but was meek towards His Father’s dispensations for Him. Think of the amazing leisure of Our Lord’s life! We keep God at excitement point, there is none of the serenity of the life hid with Christ in God about us.
Think of the things that take you out of abiding in Christ – Yes, Lord, just a minute, I have got this to do; Yes, I will abide when once this is finished; when this week is over, it will be all right, I will abide then. GET A MOVE ON; begin to abide NOW. In the initial stages it is a continual effort until it becomes so much the law of life that you abide in Him unconsciously. Determine to abide in Jesus wherever you are placed.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

Israel Update:
The IDF is moving forward nicely in Rafa South Gaza. Quietly and slowly without massive civilian disaster, as Biden warned.
Reports indicate that 40% is already taken and that one of the last 4 battalions of Hamas is dismantled.
There is a fog of War so the numbers could be off but we sure know that it is going well. Give it a few weeks and we will be all good. But remember that “dismantled battalions” doesn’t mean that we don’t get reorganization and resistance. But it means they don’t hold land and lose structure and infrastructure and assets.
We also got the Philadelphi Corridor that goes along the Gaza Egypt border. The oxygen line of Hamas with many supply tunnels that cross the border. I just hope that with every mile we progress we reduce the deal that we proposed for them.
They should know that time is against them. Biden made it so that time is in their advantage.
Our politicians are hesitant and weak , our on the ground commanders are lions.
