I got my start decades ago servicing JR Simplot at one of their nitrogen plants, rebuilding ammonia compressors. The plant produced fertilizer, with some of it headed to their operations in Idaho but also supplying agriculture in California and for the export market. That’s one tiny example of the ancillary economy effects.
In my decades working in ag in CA, I saw the water wars and the boom and bust of the ordinary worker and local economies surrounding agriculture. I’m glad I got out when I did. We were already hearing about the state putting meters on our domestic deep wells and charging us for water, never mind we already paid an arm and a leg to PG&E to pump it.

On another site there is a mod who works in some sort of at store, Dunes, in Louisiana.
She is reporting that small farmers there are in terrible shape and are looking for jobs, any jobs, so they can hold on to their farms.
It’s sickening.
I’d say I’m heartbroken for good people who put food on our tables through back breaking work, who worry as they try to hold everything they are together for themselves and their families, who are being driven to despair.
But that only in part describes what I am feeling for them, for us, for our nation which has been hijacked, stolen, and given to people who have no allegiances to her, or who sit in their air conditioned offices holding the power of life or death over those who keep us going.
Those are the ones which make me burn with the fury of a thousand white hot suns. So hot that I can barely put into words how I’ve come to despise every person who has had a hand in this.

Ben Carson as VP. Another thought. While he would be the best, would he be the best to have when having the “power of incumbency” in 2028 would be so important? Maybe he would be good after Trump if Trump has been successful in truly draining the swamp and leaving the rebuild with someone of the demeanor of Ben Carson. Is a bulldog as VP more needed? I used to think he was too tame but I have come around. The man can stand his ground. I do not see him being pushed around or easily mislead. Sometimes it’s about the man (PDJT) and other times it’s about the tam (Carson). Carson, with the MAGA team, can keep the America First momentum going in 2028.

I have a friend that’s a shade tree mechanic and has a home based auto repair business. He’s honest, does a good job, keeps his word and charges a fair price.
I was talking to him last night and he said that this is the slowest he’s ever been. People are tapped out, credit cards are maxed out, their credit is maxed out, they just can’t afford to pay for repairs. 2 car families are now down to being creative one car families.

I have a contractor business that primarily deals with exteriors but we also help handle remodels as we have subs that do interior work (tile, carpet, drywall, cabinets, insulation, paint, whatever). I have had no work since March, and what I did have thru March was a carryover from last year.
I also moonlight on just about anything. I’m a shadetree mechanic for everything from single cylinder 4 wheelers to 350s. I do solar installs on RVs, tiny homes, shops, etc. I weld, put up field fencing. Pretty much whatever I am capable of and knowledgeable about. Your friend is telling the truth. Even beyond my contractor business, this entire year all the other things I offer services for (charging $20-$50/hr depending what it is) i have had one job – working on a Honda 300 with problem brakes at $20/hr (pistons are seized from rust, and thus drums are stuck on. Also needs a new master cylinder).
People are tapped out.

I live in an affluent area. While I notice remodel and renovation work still going on in my immediate area, it is significantly down.
My friends and acquaintances, in my personal socio economic standing, who live in working and middle class areas, all tell me that things in their areas have almost completely shut down regarding upgrades, remodels, repairs and renovations.
My former coworkers (commercial construction materials industry) have told me that there sales numbers started depressing in March and that in May, they crashed.
They further told me thst their backlogs for June were depressing and very low.
Usually, starting in April, numbers start expanding, and by June, they explode thru October.
A severe economic contraction appears to be imminent.

Thank you sir! Your commercial friends assessment is much like mine. April is usually the biggest month for new business to roll in, followed by May then June. That usually keeps me busy, but slows as July rolls thru October.
There’s just nothing happening now, anywhere. I know number can be faked for a LONG time (see household survey vs BLS jobs divergence-largest in history), but I don’t see how they can fake this for 5 more months before it is evident the wheels have come off as the bus rolls on towards the cliff.

My husband had a small remodeling business and we didn’t experience what you have now, we were down November through April. No one wants their houses torn up during the holidays. I think it picked up in early spring because of the tax returns.
I think the returns are being used now to just live instead of special projects.

Well on the weekend we decided to “ check out” prices to Las Vegas in November during President Trumps election week.
We were truly surprised and arranged for two return airfares from Bellingham Washington.
$200.00 all in for both of us, and we got a room at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas for one night ( not election night.) at a price that “ floors me”
We will only have a small personal carry on..
The catch the hotel room is non refundable.

Funny you say that, I just parted with a bullet proof 2001 Saturn my wife and I bought in 2008 (for $800 no less, and all it needed was an intake gasket [had a high idle issue and CEL]). Sold it to my nephew. Everything has been maintained on that car by me – motor mounts, wheel bearings, alternator, water pump, etc. He got a screaming deal at $1500 for a car that is easy to work on with an uncle that can help him if need be. That car doesn’t leak anything, burn anything, or make any funny noises. Plus it had a natural theft deterrent device – it’s a 5 speed 😆
We have 4 vehicles between ours and 2 that belong to my husband’s daughter but are “visiting” for repairs and maintenance regularly.
They range from 14 years old (the “newest”) to 24.
My husband is such a good customer the local auto parts store offered him a discount, and the UPS guy thinks we run a repair shop.
No desire to buy a new vehicle. My husband says they talk too much 🙂
WOW. Yesterday I was at UPS in Redmond, WA to return something to Amazon. This is at least an upper middle class area. There was a somewhat distinguished looking maybe 60 yr old or so man in front of me. When he went to pay 2 credit cards were declined and he finally paid with a few dollars cash.
