US close to deal to bankroll Moderna bird flu vaccine trial
Funding worth tens of millions of dollars would help to bolster stockpile as H5N1 cases spread
The US government is nearing an agreement to bankroll a late-stage trial of Moderna’s mRNA pandemic bird flu vaccine, hoping to bolster its pandemic jab stockpile as an H5N1 outbreak spreads through egg farms and among cattle herds.
The federal funding from the government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, known as Barda, could come as early as next month, according to people close to the discussions.
It is expected to total several tens of millions of dollars, and could be accompanied by a commitment to procure doses if the phase-three trials are successful, they said.
Talks between the government and Pfizer over supporting the development of its mRNA vaccine targeting the H5 family of viruses are also ongoing.
Pfizer, like Moderna, played a pivotal role in supplying mRNA vaccines for Washington’s jab rollout during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bird flu has been detected on poultry farms in 48 states and in dairy cow herds across nine states as part of one of the worst outbreaks in recent history, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC has also reported two cases affecting dairy workers in recent months, adding to concerns of the virus spreading in human populations.
US health authorities continue to classify the public health risk from bird flu as low, but their efforts to build up and diversify the pandemic vaccine stockpile have gathered pace.
Federal health officials said last week that the government was moving ahead with plans to fill 4.8mn vials from its existing portfolio of protein-based bird flu vaccines and was in discussions with Moderna and Pfizer.
The possibility of contributing to the US pandemic vaccine stockpile also represents a commercial opportunity for the mRNA vaccine makers, whose market valuations have fallen significantly from pandemic highs. Moderna’s share price is up nearly 37 per cent since the start of April.
Moderna has completed dosing of a mid-stage trial of its H5 pandemic flu vaccine, with interim data expected soon.
Pfizer said in a statement on Wednesday that it “would be prepared to deploy the company’s capabilities to develop a vaccine for strategic stockpiles”, confirming that it had launched a phase-one trial for a pandemic flu vaccine last December.
Applications for Barda grant funding for an mRNA-based pandemic flu vaccine closed in December last year, according to a project proposal seen by the Financial Times.
But the bird flu outbreak has increased the urgency of talks, with federal officials acknowledging that the speed with which mRNA vaccines were designed and deployed during the Covid-19 pandemic showed their value compared with more traditional vaccine technology.
The jabs from GSK, Sanofi and CSL Seqirus, which make up the US government’s existing pandemic vaccine portfolio, provide immunity to the current strain of bird flu, according to laboratory testing, but rely on a more time-intensive manufacturing process using egg- and cell-based cultures.
The US health department, Moderna and Pfizer declined to comment on the potential funding.

IDF Soldiers Killed in Booby-trapped Tunnel at UNRWA School, Clinic
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Thursday that three soldiers had been killed by a booby-trapped tunnel in Rafah that was located in a medical clinic that was part of a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school.
In a statement, the IDF said:
In response to an anti-tank missile fired from an UNRWA school toward IDF troops, the 12th Brigade combat team operated in the school complex by which a mosque and a medical clinic are also located.
During the sweep and clear operation in the medical clinic, two incidents of explosive charges set in a booby-trapped tunnel shaft detonated on the troops. As a result of one of the explosions, three soldiers – Staff Sergeant Amir Galilove, Staff Sergeant Uri Bar Or, and Staff Sergeant Ido Appel – from the 50th Battalion of the Nahal Brigade were killed.
In addition, during the operation, large quantities of weapons were found in the complex, including firearms and grenades. Inside the classrooms at the school, the troops located significant shafts leading to a wide network of underground terror tunnels.
Israel has criticized UNRWA’s role in Gaza, saying the agency indoctrinates Palestinians to hate Israel and Jews, and accusing UNRWA employees of supporting, and even participating in, the October 7 terror attack by Hamas in Israel.
The risk of booby-trapped tunnels and buildings is one reason the IDF prefers to bomb dangerous locations rather than sending troops in. The Biden administration has recently withheld the needed bombs, in protest at the Rafah operation.

Thousands of lawsuits against Kiev are pending at the Strasbourg Court, according to a report
Ukraine is among the countries with the most lawsuits lodged against it at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), judge Nikolay Gnatovsky, who represents Ukraine at the court, has revealed.

Ukraine was part of Russia for longer than the United States has existed. It was first created as an independent country in the early 1990s by Washington following the Soviet government’s collapse and replacement of the Communist Party rule’s with Yeltsin’s, a puppet of Washington. Ukraine is thus an artificial country merely 30 years old, having never previously existed as an independent country.
Taiwan is a small island off the China coast, a part of China inhabited by Chinese people. Washington tried to pretend that a small island was China and had Taiwan setting on the UN Security Council. But President Nixon knew better. He supported the removal of Taiwan and its replacement with the Chinese mainland. Nixon originated the one-China policy that was US policy until the Biden Regime.
Israel was a creation of the stupid and corrupt British government, or perhaps more correctly of the fanatic Zionists who drove countless undefended Palestinians from their towns and villages. Generations of Palestinians have been born in refuge camps located in Jordan and Lebanon.
The genocide of Palestine as a people and a country has been ongoing since 1947, and nothing has been done about it. Israel has gotten away with it by using the Holocaust card to gain sympathy for its victim status and by paying Western politicians with campaign contributions to support its agenda.
