Well, if you are going to review that decision please be sure to review Japanese behavior on Okinawa. Where they not only fought to the last Japanese soldier they also murdered most (like 90%) of the civilians on that island as well. And it wasn’t a Japanese homeland island.
It is entirely possible that we would have lost as many Service men taking Okinawa alone as were lost to Japan over the entire previous four hears and, since the Japanese were arming their civilians, civilian loss would have been horrifically high as well. THese are the inconvenient facts that our political leadership had to consider at the time the decision was made. Was it the right decision? I don’t know, but I don’t think that personal or political gain had much to do with it.

With all due respect, this comparison of Hiroshima with the Holocaust is just invalid. On August 6, 1944, when the bomb was dropped, we were just weeks away from launching a ground assault on the Japanese home islands, and estimated U.S. casualties for that assault were about 1 million – likely a low estimate.
The Battle of Okinawa had just finished 6 weeks earlier, in which the U.S. suffered about 50,000 casualties in the bloodiest battle of the Pacific war, including 14,000 KIA. There were about 250,000 total casualties on Okinawa, including Japanese military and Okinawans.
The upcoming invasion of Japan would have been a grotesque bloodbath, which would have killed far more U.S. servicemen and Japanese troops and civilians than 10 Hiroshimas. There is zero doubt – zero – that dropping that bomb and the one on Nagasaki was by far the most humane way to end the war, and it saved innumerable lives and incalculable suffering.

A Gentleman in Moscow…
…is a fun, clever, and surprisingly upbeat look at Russian history through the eyes of one man. At the beginning of the book, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov escapes the firing squad and is instead sentenced to spend his life under house arrest in Moscow’s Metropol Hotel. It’s 1922, and the Bolsheviks have just taken power of the newly formed Soviet Union. The book follows the Count for the next thirty years as he makes the most of his life despite its limitations.
The hotel is located across the street from the Kremlin and managed to survive the Bolshevik revolution and the rise and fall of the Soviet Union.
In one memorable chapter, Bolshevik officials decide that the hotel’s wine cellar is “counter to the ideals of the Revolution.” The hotel staff is forced to remove labels from more than 100,000 bottles, and the restaurant must sell all wine for the same price. The Count—who sees himself as a wine expert—is horrified.
Count Rostov is an observer frozen in time, watching these changes come and go. He felt to me like he was from a different era from the other characters in the book. Throughout all the political turmoil, he manages to survive because, well, he’s good at everything!

I hope those in the reticle, apparently as this Slovak Prime Minister is, are wearing level 4 rifle rated armor plates, which do cover the most vulnerable parts of the chest/abdomen/back.
Ceramic is pretty affordable now; even a poor guy like myself can afford the solid plates that I wear. People with more money can buy the segmented overlapping ‘dragon skin’ style plates that are thinner, more comfortable, lighter and still will stop full military ball and some AP ammo. Not cheap though, between four and five grand for the plates only.
I wear the 10×12 front and back with a trauma pad backer in the front and level 3 side plates. Heavy, around 20lbs, but that’s a cost a poor guy pays.

To businesses whining about the anti-surcharge law: for once CA got it right, see how the surcharge pricing model is literal “bait and switch”. Besides, do you really think any customer will be fooled more than once?
CarpeTrachea: CA legislators never get anything right. The surcharge nonsense would have been resolved by diners, such as myself, who stop going to restaurants that apply surcharges, or who reject the surcharges when the meal tab is provided.
Add CA’s minimum wage laws and onerous regulations to the Covid op and I’m impressed any non-corporate restaurants are open. The last few years have been a full on attack on Main Street.

BTW, the NTSB prelim report on the Dali is out. Looks like circuit breaker trips on the generator circuits. The report has more info, though no smoking gun yet. My question is how those circuit breakers are controlled? There can be multiple methods of control. The report mentioned they were reset manually during the incident.
ETA, the preliminary posit of method of failure was circuit breaker trips leading to a loss of control/logistical power, part of which were the engine lubrication pumps, so the prime mover shut down, ceasing propulsion. The generators continued running but without any load since the breakers were tripped. The emergency genset came online and provided low voltage (not to the prime mover) to ship essential systems.
My understanding is there is one low speed reversible prime mover, four primary gensets and one emergency genset. The report also outlined a bow thruster, a high voltage application, that I’d alluded to back during the incident aftermath. It’s function is limited above 5 knots and wouldn’t have worked anyway since high voltage was offline with the circuit breaker trip.

Though, I am inclined to think this is not accidental same as the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore. Galveston rings a bell somewhere for critical industry, petroleum and or chemical refineries come to mind.

Look it up, shipping is hugely hackable and virtually nothing has been done to protect it over a decade after that vulnerability was published.

They claimed they did, but at that speed such was an absolutely futile effort, and the anchors were reportedly dropped on the Port side to pull it back, so they could not have been responsible for the turn we saw.
Dropping anchor while under way, even at low speed would have accomplished nothing.
Anchor is like a PARKING break on a motor vehicle; you STOP the vehicle, THEN you set the parking break, you do not USE the parking break to stop.

The emergency genset, which was operating independent of the breaker trip, apparently provides power to a backup hydraulic system for rudder control. However, without the prime mover engaged, rudder effectiveness would be minimal to non-extant.
There was plenty of forward momentum to offer some deflection IF the rudder was moved at all, and they’re is no indication it was.
It was put to effect that turn and left there.
We don’t even have an honest account of either what the bridge crew did and what the ship itself did; and we likely never will.
The alarms raised about the hackability of these systems over a decade ago noted that hackers could arrange for the bridge instruments to show them anything they want them to see, even as they were making the ship so something completely different, and they can wipe their tracks and all evidence of the commands they input and the feedback of those systems as they exit.
Like our vulnerability to EMP, this insane risk was known and ignored, and well publicized, as if begging bad actors to take notice.
Those lights going off and on? Could have been hacker theater; we’ve no proof the engine ever did cut out.
That huge billowing cloud of smoke halfway through the turn? Doesn’t look like a generator coming on line to me, it looks like the main engine was being gunned for final ramming speed.
Networked systems are notoriously vulnerable to exploits from external threats.
I do not see any serious efforts to address that even by completely isolating critical infrastructure systems from external networks.

I will be very surprised if it actually comes off. By all rational logic given how far Biden’s mental capacity has deteriorated, his puppeteers must find some kind of excuse at the last minute to cancel the debate or to endlessly postpone it.
But what if Biden’s puppeteers have something slick up their slimy sleeves and the June 27th debate actually does happen?
The ground rules for the debate favor Biden. It’s also possible the puppetmasters believe the moderators can somehow save Biden’s skin by peppering President Trump with baseless accusations and then cutting off his responses whenever it suits them.
If the June 27th debate actually happens — which I doubt it will, but stranger things have happened — it is certain to be the most watched televised political event in American history.
If Trump really did agree to a debate in June with Biden only, his campaign manager should be fired. He is effectively unifying the Dem party behind Biden before the convention and dismissing RFK, West, and Stein, instead of allowing infighting to continue. Never get in the way of your enemy destroying itself. Trump has to insist that there will be no electronic ear pieces or other devices allowed. He also has to find some way to ensure that the debate questions are not given to Biden beforehand.
That the Democrats want to hold a debate in June, long before early voting starts, tells you they are up to something. They envision Biden falling on his face in the debate, thus allowing time for them to put someone else as the nominee at the August convention.
And by having this early debate, they will then have the advantage for their new nominee in knowing Trump’s answers and policies in the debate.
If this happens, Trump should refuse any debates with whomever is their nominee. And he should make that clear before the Democrat convention so the fake media can’t accuse him of being afraid to debate.

Maybe PDJT has a plan for converting the inevitable cheating into an opportunity for turning the tables. Or if Trump strays away from the question track into the real substance of an issue, and the moderators cut him off before his time is up, that action will send its own message to the viewing audience.

Our society has so many passengers, and perhaps it has long been such.
People required at planting and harvest time, but mostly superfluous.
People required to hold a spear when the Persians (Iranians or Aryans) attack, say, every few decades.
One explanation for gay people is their necessity at such times.
I have a brother who lives with my mother, and refuses to work.
Agricultural societies make allowances for such people, because they work at harvest time, and do not create more mouths to feed.
The industrial revolution created the concept of efficiency, and the many deadbeats in an agrarian society were left out. The welfare State was made for such passengers not producers.
Perhaps the concept of human rights boils down to such passengers. The productive do not need to proclaim their human rights.
The balance between the productive and the passengers must have long been a precarious one. The passengers must have always objected to their station in the front line, during war. They certainly don’t jump into the front line, now.
