Sounds like the voting machines we use in Minnesota.
The slots are in doors that lock and can only be opened once the election is over and the final count is done by an Absentee Ballot Board made up of at least two people from two different political parties.
Ballots in the slot means they have not been read and must be hand counted, with that number added to what the machine read — and all ballots must equal the same number the machine kicks out, plus hand counted ballots.
Key thing is making sure your county has an Absentee Ballot Board, and that your Absentee Ballot Board is actually made up of citizens — not county workers — of two different parties who can question everything until it is fixed to everyone’s satisfaction.
Our machines are NOT on the Internet at any time during an election, and the paper ballots have to match the number of votes the machine reports.
It is easy to see how cheating can take place, but when you have people watching every step of the process, it is less likely to happen.
How can you possibly know whether your machines are on the Internet or not? Did you monitor the wifi 24/7?
Also, which machines are you talking about? There are “ballot marking devices”, which aren’t supposed to be online so why do counties pay millions of dollars for machines that do nothing but fill in ovals? There are tabulators, which are probably what you’re talking about, which in our state are behind locked doors with trusted (and ignorant) people from the county, bipartisan people who don’t know computers but who do know their own buy-off price, and the vendors. People who actually know anything about computers don’t get to ask questions. Also there are ballot printers, which as I recall HAVE to be online to do what they do. (Can you think of anything you could do with online access to a ballot printer?) Then the results are transmitted over the Internet, all through one company (Edison) – can you see a problem there?
Besides all that, look up what UOCAVA allows overseas voters to do – vote by email/online. Why even bother arguing whether other machines are online, when there are voters legally allowed to vote by email/online?!? In my county last fall there were more “overseas” voters than in-person voters – for a school board and property tax election…suuure!
We do indeed need people watching every step of the process, but it’s a bit difficult when the easiest places to cheat are through electromagnetic signals, which very few of us have the X-ray vision to track! There is no transparency with machines.
