59-year-old South Korea opposition leader Lee Jae-myung had just finished touring a construction site of a new airport on Gadeok Island when he was attacked and stabbed in neck while talking with reporters.
Numerous media outlets captured the horrific attack.
As a presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung was in favor of normalizing relations with North Korea.

VIA BBC – Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost the presidential elections in 2022, was stabbed on the left side of his neck on Tuesday morning.
The male attacker was arrested at the scene. Lee was transferred to a hospital about 20 minutes after the attack. He was conscious at the time, Yonhap said.
Mr Lee is not currently a member of South Korea’s legislature but is widely expected to run for a seat in the next general election, which will take place in April 2024.

This guy’s personal security, such as it was, sucked. No political leader should have ever been allowed in a crowd like that unless the attack was widely coordinated
agreed. and there is also the aspect of a close up personal knife stabbing. This was not a professional hit. The assailant had a personal axe to grind. maybe a manchurian, but that comes with risk that the demented perpetrator does something different or decides no, not today. This appears to me to be someone who had a personal score to settle. Killing by knife requires a LOT of anger and rage. Most people can’t do that. Most people say they could do it, but walk that back when that moment happens. This guy looks like he was absolutely determined to get in close and finish. It wasn’t some distant jabbing. He was very forceful, closed the distance rapidly when he saw the opening and was very deliberate and quick about it.
it reminds me of the ABE assassination. Someone who had a personal reason to see the man killed, who prepared and built a firearm and then planned an assassination. While a knife doesn’t require the kind of preparation it does require a much higher level of commitment.
Besides that, yes the personal security team was not vigilant. Especially in maintaining distance from the reporters and onlookers who were entirely too close to the client. That’s rule number 1 that was broken. You have to manage space and you have to take action when you see ANYONE closing that space. This was a failure of the team to provide professional security. I doubt any of these people will ever get contracts going forward. they have to be on their A game, 100 percent of the time. the assailant only has to get it “right” one time. It takes a different kind of situation awareness and quickness to be a personal security team. This was a failure.
I have reviewed President Trump’s personal security team (not his secret service…I have no comment on that). His team does all the right things right. I have confidence that if someone attempts to close distance they will be stopped. This will not happen with President Trump. His team also does advance ops, and there is situational planning and contingency. Should something happen it will be limited and really that is all you can do if someone is absolutely committed. And while we think of VIP’s are targets, it also informs us all about the need to be vigilant, and aware and prepared for situations that we cannot predict 100 percent. I tell my family this, here are the highest risks you face in life from assailants:
a. answering your door to strangers. Never open the door. Ask them to leave a note and you will call back.
b. shopping center parking lots
c. banks and bank ATM’s
d. shopping malls
e. domestic violence/family. unfortunately, yes a high amount of violence happens inside the family lines
f. on the road antagonizing or disregarding the threat of someone who is road raging. Never follow a road rager. Just slow down, let them pass and do not engage
g. pulling over to help a driver with a broke down car on a remote road.
h. political rallies and protests
i. gas stations and convenience stores. the number one target of armed robberies…time your entry and always lock your vehicle every single time if you enter a convenience store…if people are loitering, go to a different gas station!
j. walking to your mailbox.
we do live in a dangerous world. There is a reality we have to accept, but not to allow this risk to control our mood, ambition, and attitudes. To be UNAFRAID is to be prepared for the unimaginable.

I don’t think your Union-Confederate analogy works at all. First off, there is the experience of Japanese colonization, which was devastating for the Koreans (and Manchurians). Then you had the perception if not also reality of Korean elites kissing the behinds of the Japanese to protect their positions. That did nothing to endear the elites to their countrymen. (Keep in mind prior to colonization, Joseon was very much a class-oriented society under Neo-Confucianism.) Post-war the elites were seen as currying favor with the Americans to keep their status. You also had the battle of factions between the Hawaii (Rhee) faction and the Shanghai (KGP) faction. So the division of Korea is seen as imposed on the people, not an organic thing brought about by differing economic systems.
