Thank you for the kind words and prayers yesterday. I am 100% sure they carried me through my day yesterday. That, and likely a lack of sleep… which seems to have a calming effect over me – much like Benadryl. LOL Somehow, I stayed highly effective, and it was a very productive day yesterday.
This girl is draggin’ wagon, so I hope to sleep in tomorrow morning. Having the two weeks ahead off, I feel like I won the lottery. Laughed at my girl who tried to start filling the days with an agenda – I reminded her that I would have quiet time and read a book or three. (So glad I took those 4 days alone! Sometimes I think she believes I am her circus monkey and seeks me to entertain her every whim.)

A few days ago Betsy commented that she liked to listen to our nighttime guitar post when she drank her morning coffee. As a result, she much preferred the longer concerts . . . I hadn’t thought much about this difference.
Initially, I tried to find concerts that typically ran about 30 minutes or so, thinking that late-night listeners would prefer somewhat shorter performances before going to bed.
Bet’s gentle observation caused me to rethink why I was avoiding some splendid performances which might take a bit longer, perhaps as much as an hour or so. Really, our listeners are under no obligation to set for an entire traditional concert length concert. We don’t keep score on the Treehouse and I’m not looking over your shoulder.
So, as with David Russel’s performances in the Spanish churches, we’ll sometimes present selections from the wider collection of somewhat longer concert performances. Enjoy, Treeper friends. 🙂

Yhank’s so much for your kind words, dear ‘Woo. My neighborhood traditionally puts up lots of Christmas decorations. I didn’t put any lights up last year but, this year, I didn’t want to be the only house on the street . . . In each of my front windows, I have placed a single battery powered candle. I think they are a perfect, if subtle, signal that my house celebrates Our Lord’s Christmas. Looks good and feels good.
I’ve mentioned we were married for a long time—55 years. In thinking about our long relationship it came to me that what we had was an abiding sense of trust and loyalty. In all that time, through good times and not so good times, we always trusted each other and were loyal to each other. We just accepted that we would do our best to accept the good stuff and try to work out the not-so-good stuff. We never, in all that time, cheated on each other. Not once.
If you have those values constant in your relationship, your have a good possibility for long term success. We were blessed to be able to do this. And, I am blessed to understand this now. But, what I miss the most dear ‘Woo is the casualness of a long-term relationship. Don’t think I can easily replace that loss at age 80.

Mornin’ Bet, love. 🙂 I had an interesting experience this morning. My fresh Bustelo tasted even better than normal for some reason. I’ve also mentioned that Little ‘Tink, formally feral, has slowly transformed herself into a very affectionate little kitty. As I was drinking my first cup, she hopped into my lap for a head and neck rub. This time there was a difference, however. Usually, she likes to get a good rub for a few minutes and then jumps down to eat. This time, however, she didn’t move but, instead, turned and spent time staring into my eyes as I stroked her head and neck. With David Russell in the background, this was a most perfect morning. Looks like ‘Tink has finally learned to be a cat. I really appreciate the affection.

hell, if I could eat fried chicken and live to 90, I’d mark that in the “win” column, gnomesayin’ ?
There is a lady here in IL who started her own cottage craft of home made dog treats…her own recipes with all natural ingredients…and started selling at agility events. She now has a thriving business when it was started to supplement the family income. Now its her only business. Her products are in high demand. She keeps tabs on dog food recalls and nutrition…
She has told me that she is constantly getting requests from big corporate types. She steadfastly refuses as they will change and ruin her “brand”.
That is a good thought, during some dead time between tourist seasons, I made dog treats with left over scraps I have in the deep freeze from making my meats for pizza toppings.
I only made one test mix with oats & rice + I think pork scraps… people I gave them out to to test … their dogs loved them and have asked for more, I just need to find a better way to form / mold them in bulk format as well as some sort of grinder attachment to grind into flour whole grain oats & rice … or a much better / bigger blender.
And I know someone who has a blue ribbon winning dog who travels the local dog show circuit…. hum…..

It is a sure thing that if she were bought out, they would cheapen all things that would go into her treats and ruin them to those who would notice (the dog probably wont complain about noticing the difference anyway).
I see that happen in this town, as every business seems to have a new owner every 5 years or so … the number one thing they all do it find places that they can lower expenses, even if a small number of customers notice the change and stop patronizing said establishment.
I was looking thru my food service provider’s catalog and noticed that they no longer offer a “all meat” beef pizza topping anymore, only a beef/textured vegetable protein (soy) is now the ONLY option.
They still have both options for a sausage topping either “all meat” or the TVP additive version.
My grandparent’s in TN raised their own chickens (about 30), had mountains of eggs that they ate on a daily basis, biscuits & gravy made from either bacon grease or lard and lived into their 80’s.
Chicken too when they were unfortunate enough to stop laying eggs anymore or have other issues.
I’m told I also loved grandmas jellies on biscuits … especially when the jelly had fermented … LOL.
I can only hope to make to that age and beyond.
Sad story; like the MacDonald’s story; really a shame how greedy heartless individuals can hurt so many people, and nearly nothing can be done to stop them.
There’s a movie about Ray Kroc, starring Michael Keaton as Kroc; who scammed the MacDonald family out of their business the same way as what happened to Col. Sanders.
I posted to nimrodman but I meant to post to you….about a beloved lady here in IL…she is constantly getting offers from the corporates…she constantly refuses…as they will ‘ruin my brand’.
And then the second wife ended up with it all.
I found a spice recipe for KFC:
(Serves 4)
Prep: 30 minutes
Soak: 20-30 minutes
Cook: 15-18 minutes
Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 tablespoon salt
1/2 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
1/2 tablespoon dried basil leaves
1/3 tablespoon dried oregano leaves
1 tablespoon celery salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon dried mustard
4 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons garlic salt
1 tablespoon ground ginger
3 tablespoons ground white pepper
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
1 chicken, cut up, the breast pieces cut in half for more even frying
Expeller-pressed canola oil
Method:
– Mix the flour in a bowl with all the herbs and spices; set aside.
– Mix the buttermilk and egg together in a separate bowl until combined. Soak the chicken in the buttermilk mixture at room temperature, 20-30 minutes.
– Remove chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dip the chicken pieces in the herb-spice-flour mixture to coat all sides, shaking off excess. Allow to sit on a rack over a baking sheet, 20 minutes.
– Meanwhile, heat about 3 inches of the oil in a large Dutch oven (or similar heavy pot with high sides) over medium-high heat to 350F degrees. Use a deep-frying thermometer to check the temperature. When temperature is reached, lower the heat to medium to maintain it at 350F. Fry 3 or 4 pieces at a time, being careful not to crowd the pot. Fry until medium golden brown, turning once, which should take 15-18 minutes. Transfer chicken pieces to a baking sheet covered with paper towels. Repeat with remaining chicken.
I don’t fry mine. I also don’t use buttermilk.
I bake them in a hot oven so they go crispy
I saw a “make alike” recipe woman on the Donahue show long ago … Harlan had told her his spice mix was in all stores (he was p*ssed about his lawsuit at the time), and he called in as I recall to a radio show she was doing to “suggest” a solution.
She was a middle/high school teacher…. sent her students on the hunt for something that had 11 herbs & spices in the stores.
11 herbs & spices was the mix packet for as I recall 7 seas Italian dressing which does not appear available anymore but I would need to look @ good seasons which seems to be one of the few packet mixes left. They might have consumed 7 seas company.
then to make it red dry tomato soup mix … not many of those left either
Something that also bothered Harlan was they started deep frying his chicken… he pan fried originally but when he franchised it was baked .. as our local KFC was still baking it when I was a kid.
Now with the advent of pressure frying it can be done much quicker than a standard fryer and eliminate the issues that are inherent of frying Chicken Brea$ts that are not completely done in the center.
She had (on Donahue show) Wendy’s chili, Twinkies, Oreo’s and White Castle burgers recipes (with a name change of course) … the only other one I remember the “secret” ingredient in was WC’s burger ….. jar or 2 of veal baby food mixed into the ground beef.
Wish I would have converted that Donahue show to digital from VHS when I had the capacity to but … sheez I had 300+ vhs tapes. I still find stuff online from time to time that I had recorded on VHS.
Oh and add those 2 items to the dredge flour mix & double dredge with the egg wash.
These days I would probably pan fry the chicken first then transfer to oven to finish the “cook till brea$ts are done in the center … specifically to 165 F … much more and it will become dry & chewy.
Or perhaps someday they will make a “home pressure fryer” but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one due to liability from those budding home “Gordon Ramey’s”.
I can attest firsthand that pressure cooking in vegetable shortening (like Crisco) the fried chicken is the absolute best and least time-consuming. I described it a bit above.
But the entire process to cook 8 pieces of fried chicken (1 whole chicken) took about 20 minutes start to finish. I could do it in about 15 minutes once we had the chicken parts washed and ready, and two large pans of flour/spice coating and egg/milk dip ready. If I had to start from scratch it took about 1/2 hour total.
Maryland Fried Chicken is pan fried in butter and is awesome tasting but to get it cooked uniformly through (regardless of which chicken part) and crispy without being dry requires a bit more stovetop finesse than most amateur “only-cook-to-eat” cooks possess.

I don’t know what was truly in Col. Sanders’ Secret Spice formula (some claim to know it and have published it on the internet but I tried and it isn’t the same) that came bagged up without listing the ingredients, but I cooked many a pot of that fried chicken at a local Gino’s fast food restaurant in Baltimore County in the mid-1960s. The process used pressure cookers filled halfway with vegetable shortening (“grease”). Once the closed pot hit the proscribed temperature, it took 8 minutes per pot. We had 8 burners on which to cook simultaneously…. Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays in any kind of dry weather were always busy enough to keep two men fully occupied making chicken. I never tired of eating it – fresh & hot, out of the pot – it was awesome!

When I taught German, I used several of the Grimms’ Fairy Tales, and my more advanced students were expecting to breeze through it.
No, the language was not particularly easy: The Brothers Grimm believed in raising up the linguistic level of the reader or listener, not in catering to his or her level with unchallenging vocabulary or style.
They would be appalled by the idea that e.g. Shakespeare had to be “dumbed-down” or “easified” for students.
As the biography above shows, nothing was made easy for them! In fact, obstacles to be overcome were thrown their way quite often: note the snobbishness of earlier days that people who were impoverished were therefore, ipso facto , untalented and unintelligent.
America, of course, is one giant fist shake and a scream against that idea!

A day care director friend noticed that I never spoke in a sing-songy baby voice with Savannah when she was an infant or toddler. In utero, she was considered a high risk pregnancy, so I often spoke to her while she still within me… encouraging her along.
She finds the dulling down of literary works and often addition of sexual and obscene content in the margins, so the kids “get the true meaning of the text without having to work their brains or imagine”… quite offensive.
She’s 17 yo and we still read together, which is excellent as one gleens more from the text with inputs and opinions. She’ll often pause and ask me what something means and we will journey together to find out if we stumble across something new.

Of course, in previous centuries, reading a novel out loud to entertain the family was typical! Technology has nearly killed that off, and the effects of the near demise of reading for pleasure are still seen today.

Israel Update:
-IDF accidentally shot and killed three Israeli hostages in Sajaiha Gaza. Apparently they either escaped or let go because of the fights, they were wrongly identified as hostiles and killed. There were before unarmed suicide bombers and unarmed people who try to lead the IDF into traps. Those are fight zones that civilians already left. Also the same area had real terrorists fight shortly later. The subject is under investigation by the IDF. This dominates the news in Israel. Some demonstrations of families of the other kidnapped, they get an excessive media coverage, only hundreds or a bit more than a thousand people. Unfortunately the families of the kidnapped seem to be hijacked by the anti Bibi liberal group who where previously demonstrating against the judicial reform and it goes back earlier. Most Israelis think that we need to keep going but this narrative is getting the help of the media. Overall it is a very difficult situation. The demonstrators want an exchange now at all costs. I doubt that the leadership will succumb to this pressure. Also Hamas will not give all the hostages because they know it will a free ticket to go after all of them everywhere.
-Chief of Mossad is expected to meet the Prime Minister of Qatar in Europe over the weekend. This is regarding hostage exchange. NoteIn my opinion Israel must take it to a point that the negotiation is regarding all the hostages in exchange for the lives of the Hamas leaders. Then later we can hunt them wherever they are.
-The largest Shipping company in the world Maersk decided to stop passing in the Red Sea after two more ships were damaged from missies today. Other shipping companies also considering. The US is organizing some international force to protect the shipping routes.
Note: Defense is not the way. Israel or others should have some 30 jets with 300 tone of bombs and demolish all the centers of power of those Yemen savages. Or better a few Iranian tankers could go down as a response. This is weakness of both the world and Israel. This restraint could be another pressure from the US to contain the war in Israel only.
-Border Police in Israel filmed beating a Turkish journalist. The Police suspended them until farther investigation. Note: Turkish and Arab media in Israel are Hamas sympathizers and inciters of hate. Israel should kick them out of its areas. This is another weakness of Bibi.

North Gaza is still under heavy war in Sajayja, the same place that was the disaster a few days ago where we lost some 8 or more soldiers and officers. I think they are almost done conquering it. There are other places that are not conquered in the North, the main strongholds are 90% taken. But even after conquering, the underground can take months to clear and there are still fights on and off.
No tunnels from Gaza to West Bank. Too far.
We know there are tunnels from Rafiach (most south Gaza) to Egypt. There are also likely from Kahn Yunis to Rafiach. There is a concern that the senior leaders and hostages will escape to Egypt, from Kahn Yunis. I don’t know what Israel is doing about it. I know there was some IDF action in Rafiach. It is the most south city and loaded with refugees so it will be trickery.

Very terrible accident. I am of course very sad for the ones who were shot by mistake; but also for the soldiers: they now have to bear that inconsolable horror, and remembering every second of that scene, wondering how they could have known, or done something different. War is a terrible thing. We should never let ourselves get calloused over it; even though so much in this world is fanatically trying to desensitize everyone from every trace of humanity.
I am sorry for the ones who died, and for their families; and I am very sorry for the soldiers, who were actually trying to save the hostages.
Hamas took responsibility for the safety of the hostages by the act of taking them. The deaths of the three hostages are on Hamas. Their captors must be prosecuted for murder if they are not killed in battle.
Al Jazeera should be banned after the war. All news sources in Gaza must go through censors for a time until the culture is reformed.
Yemeni ports should be reduced to ruin. All ships in the area should be searched for weapons. If found carrying Iranian missiles, those ships should be confiscated and sold to support the operation. Iranian oil terminals should be destroyed. Iran sent swarms of drones to destroy Saudi refineries a few years ago. The same should happen to Iran.
Of course, the Obama holdovers in the US government will prevent any true resolutions to the crises in the area. Bibi has stood strong so far. No other Israeli leader stands out as being strong against Israel’s mortal enemies. May the Lord bless Israel.

In the example of the illustration of the ten virgins, no doubt all of them were happy and excited to receive their invitations, and be given the special lamps for the joyful trek to the wedding feast. But how then did half of them lack even the common sense, that they would need oil for their lamps? Even while they knew that their wise companions had diligently taken care of that first thing?
Shouldn’t it be obvious then likewise, how that when we have been called out of the world, freely granted repentance and complete cleansing from our sins; and knowing that we need the Divine Helper, the Spirit of Christ in us, to give us light; that this should be our first priority for the rest of our life? Does it take any special insight, to understand that we have to be ready in a moment, ALWAYS, and already have the Love of our life Christ, and His Spirit so filling our heart, we will be ready to go when He comes?
And so, the Lord continuing on this point; and that we should not only think of our calling as an invitation to the wedding only, but as His servants being charged with His property till His return; He gives an illustration of a man leaving his property in the care of his servants, while he has to leave the country. Yes, it is a happy and blessed privilege to have an invitation and a place reserved to the wedding; but there is a responsibility for work that has to be done, for which we must all give an account of ourselves to Jesus when He comes.
The wise, and the good and faithful, made sure they had oil in their vessels with their lamps, and were diligent in their business about their Master’s things, and knew not when he would return; because they loved Him, and wanted to do all to please Him. The foolish however, and the wicked and slothful, had no heart for their Master or for His business; and so, no care for preparing for when He should return. Their actions spoke louder than all their words of love and loyalty.
Another thing we should gather from both of these illustrations, about the virgins, and the servants; is that we should not try to smooth over, or falsely represent, what will be the end of those who fail; which is no entrance into the kingdom of God, and not known by the Lord (implying the names having been blotted out of the Book of Life), but cast out into the outer darkness and weeping and gnashing of teeth. Faith and grace are evidenced by the course in life, the thoughts and words, the behavior of a kind of character that matches the talk. Faith and grace are for overcoming, and enduring to the end. They are not cleverly imagined fables; but real life power of God working in us to do the things that please Him.
Justified by faith implies unity of heart. Saved by grace implies the active working of the power of God in the believer, who does the will of God from the heart. Faith is not merely mental ascent; but trust. Grace also, is not an abstract idea, or something that cannot be proven with results. To trust also implies that certain actions are to be taken in that direction. Knowing and believing and being very happy about it, won’t give us what we’re hoping for unless we take a course of action to show what we know and believe is real.
1 John 3:16-24 “In this we have known the love of God, because He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives on behalf of our brethren. If however [some]one may have this world’s means of life, and sees his brother having need, and shuts up his affections from him, how abides the love of God in him? My little children, we should not love in word, nor with tongue; but in work and in truth. Also in this we know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before Him; because if our heart condemn, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. The foolish and the slothful, the wicked and unfaithful servants, which knew their Lord’s will and did not prepare themselves, nor do the things He commanded them; these are the idle and unfruitful: and like the barren fig tree, year after year producing no fruit; when He returns, and takes account with all His servants; to those the Lord will only have this to say, “All these years I come seeking fruit and find none. Why even the ground does it render useless? Cut it down!”

If we want to be rewarded for good, then we have to do those good things which deserve to be rewarded of God. And salt that has lost its saltiness is good for nothing, but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.
All these warnings and instructions of the Lord, make it plain to us, that with all that God has done for us, above all sending His own Son to give His life for our sins, to reconcile us to God and make us new Creations; with all that has been entrusted to us to do for Him till He returns; all these things are given, with the expectation of a character of integrity, and reciprocal love that is shown in loyalty and obedience, WORTHY OF HIM who has freely given to us all things.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.

Carl Barks was one of the original “Duck Men” who worked for Walt Disney.
In the 1940’s he was hired to create comic books for the Disney brand.
He created for the Donald Duck comic books a much more complex environment for Donald and his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie), which included a deeper personality for Donald (e.g. single adoptive father struggling to support three grade-school nephews) and new characters with whom Donald could interact.
One of those characters was Donald’s uncle, a Scottish immigrant, adventurer, and capitalist par excellence Scrooge McDuck.
One of the best stories composed by Carl Barks – he wrote and drew everything – was for December 1951, A Christmas for Shacktown.
This is not just a great comic-book story, it is a great story…period! Barks wrote and drew such stories for nearly 25 years before his retirement in the late 1960’s.
If you have children or grand-children or great-grand-children, read this story with them!

My youngest has a friend and her husband and from her university days, the wife, along with two of their three children, who has been hammered with existential physical afflictions. I have posted a few parts of their never ending journeys trying to work through them…
No matter the few victories or the many crushing disappointments, their confidence and praise of Almighty God is resolute and immutable. In every photo she posts all one can see amongst the post surgical bandages and IVs are smiling faces.

The last couple of weeks I’ve been talking about building my new (old?) computer. I’m confused about what to call it, because it’s an old system with new parts hanging off all over the place. So, old/new? New/old? Who knows.
The hardware part is done. All I have to do now is add a video card, and we’re off to the races.
I’m having a little bit of buyer’s remorse, because I’m now realizing that I’m just trying to put some lipstick and a little makeup on a pig. My system is old and obsolete and there’s only so much I can do with it. I can hot-rod it up all I want but it’s still not going to compare with newer systems out today. The remorse comes from realizing that my money would probably have been better spent on a new, or newer, system. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Say la vee (La Vee!).
Now we get to the “fun” part. The software! And I get to re-install Windows all over again. Oh, joy!
I have five separate hard drives in my system; four SSD’s and one platter drive. Everything on all those drives is going to get wiped and the disks formatted. It’s going to be like Picasso, standing in front of a fresh blank canvas. It’s kind of a nervous moment, because with one irrevocable keystroke every bit of data on those drives is gone forever, with no possibility of retrieval. So there’s a tinge of paranoid mania, making sure I didn’t overlook anything important.
Then I’m going to use RAID, which is a way to make the computer see all those hard drives as one single massive drive (or as two or more smaller drives, whichever one prefers. One may configure it any way one wishes.). I plan to set it up with one small SSD holding the OS and other critical files, the rest of the SSD space for program data, and the platter drive for backup purposes.
As you’ve probably experienced for yourself, installing Windows is a pain. It’s not especially difficult or complicated, it’s just tedious and dull. And being Windows 10 and a few years old, the updates alone will probably take hours, after which I’ll have a nice bloated system. Then I’ll get to work pruning down that overgrown shrub, and make it lean and mean. Then I’ll make a baseline backup image of the drive(s) so that I’ll have a fall back position in case anything ever goes wrong.
Then I’m going to set up a dual-boot with Linux Mint, and make another drive image of the computer in that state. This is going to be an intermediate step. I have some apps that won’t run on Linux so I have to keep Windows around to run those. But as soon as I can determine which of those apps I can do without, or find a Linux alternative, or a work-around (such as a Windows emulator), Windows is gone! Buh-bye Bill Gates.
After that, I have to reinstall all my apps one by one and restore any user data I may have accumulated, making backups at each critical juncture.
At this point may I put in a plug for Open Office. It’s a full-featured Office suite, every bit as good as MS Office, and it’s free! If you have need of such an app, I recommend you try it out.
I have this large photo editing app called Photo Impact; it’s pretty good. The rest of my software is mostly games, but I also have a lot of disk and computer management utilities. They are small, but they are many, and they help me keep an eye on my computer’s health and performance.
And now the playground is prepared. With my new video card I’ll be able to run some of the newer games. In particular I have my eye on the new MS Flight Simulator. From what I’ve been reading and seeing, it’s so realistic it’s hard to tell it from the real thing. It live streams actual terrain and geography, such that one can actually fly over and see one’s own house. Naturally, that’s going to get into some serious bandwith, so it’s best to have a really good unlimited internet connection. And all that detail and realism requires some serious horsepower, so we’ll have to see how that goes.
Well, I think everything is ready. I’m pretty sure I’ve got everything backed up that needs to be backed up. Of course, being slightly (!) OC about this kind of thing, I’ll be be triple and quadruple checking to make sure I have everything before I step off that cliff (and then probably checking again!). Hopefully I can get it done in one day, but I guess I can finish up tomorrow if need be.

I’ll never forget a radio commercial with Bob Newhart. I don’t even remember what the product was but it was Bob doing his signature talking on the phone bit, and at the end he says, “No, I’m not any kind of retentive, I just like things neat. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go alphabetize my freezer.”

Jeff: My first PC, in the fall of 1986, for my first year at business school, was an IBM XT with 30 MB RAM. I had a big dot-matrix printer and used Multimate wordprocessing software and probably Lotus 1-2-3. The whole set up arrived in 3 big, heavy boxes and cost about $6,500. I can’t believe I spent that much money at that time. Software ran off floppies and took forever to load. Having to fiddle with DOS was a nightmare and crap shoot.
DITTO! In 1986 my first pc was a IBM XT clone made out of SE Asian parts bought at a local Amateur Radio / Computer “Ham fest” held at a local county fairgrounds. I put it together using someone’s hand printed / drawn and xerox-copied instructions. It worked! I think my total investment was $100 including a green-screen monitor.
You had 30 MB! My first one was 20 MB! But it was only about $4000. Did my PhD thesis on it.
That was very interesting, and fun. I would love to get rid of windows and instead install Linux, though there are so many different versions and I am no techie. Perhaps Linux beginners level 🙂

We saw Wish, the latest cartoon movie from Disney, because a friend of my wife wanted to see it and check whether it was suitable (i.e. not woke) for her grandchildren.
I was skeptical.
In one sense, it is not “woke,” in that homosexuality is not present, overtly or subtly, and no “save-the-planet” agitprop was in sight.
In another sense, it is “woke,” in that a feminist agenda is prominent: the main character is a sub-Saharan African girl living on a (Spanish?) island in the Mediterranean among a multi-cultural population. Males are either evil (the king of the island) or incompetent yet lovable schnooks.
However…
(Spoilers ahead)
Of interest is that the plot centers on a “freedom from government, think for yourself, get busy and fulfill your own wishes and dreams” – theme!
To us, all of that is obvious! But these days of government paternalism have destroyed those ideas among too many generations.
The king in the story is also a sorcerer who takes his people’s wishes, puts a spell on the wishes, and “keeps them safe” in his palace, preventing people from fulfilling their wishes on their own.
The sorcerer-king decides whose wish will be fulfilled at the rate of one per year: you see, people’s desires might have unexpected consequences and cause distress, i.e. your success might prevent my success, and so, mediocrity and repression are necessary “to keep everyone safe.”
I was rather amazed by that aspect: and so a revolution occurs against the king, who is placed in a dungeon by his wife, the queen.
Matriarchy good, patriarchy bad! So the anti-government message is clothed in curious dress!
The “music” is barely deserving of the name! The “songs” tend toward the “yell-lots of words-on-one-note” style: melody is absent.
The style of the music is all over the place: one sequence sounds like something from Hamilton, in the “rap-style” which I despise, loathe, and hate on aesthetic and intellectual grounds.
The “lyrics” are clumsy, unmetrical, have far too many words racing by (both my wife and her friend complained they could not follow what the song was about, as the jabbered “lyrics” zipped past), and are basically prose statements, and bad prose at that: not one atom of poetry exists in them.
We all agreed that no little girls in the Fifth Grade will be singing anything from this movie in school talent shows, unlike what happened with Frozen! That song also suffers from clumsiness in the lyrics, banality in the construction, and poor orchestration, but it is light-years beyond the complete failure of every “song” in Wish.
In the end, it is a mediocre, and at times boring movie – too many of those terrible anti-musical sequences, which do nothing or little for advancing the plot or anything else- which has little in it to evoke laughter or even a smile.
It is a sad tribute to Walt Disney himself.

A poll two years ago by Pew Research found that the majority of adults in America say they believe in heaven and hell, with more believing in the former than the latter. Some years earlier, another poll by U.S. News & World Report asked who Americans believed were going to heaven. Mother Teresa got the highest vote, with Oprah Winfrey coming in second. At the bottom of the list that year was O.J. Simpson.
The poll respondents evidently thought that the good works done by those higher on the list would gain them entrance to heaven. You could be the best person in the world but it will not prepare you to meet Jesus. The apostle Paul reminds you, “None is righteous; no, not one” (Romans 3:10) and “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). However, God, in His love and mercy for the whole world, “gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Faith in God through Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven. It is not by any works of righteousness that you have done, but because of His mercy (Titus 3:5).
The word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, “but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18).
Today’s verse is from the parable of the net, and Jesus said that many fish will be caught, but not all will be accepted. If you have heard the call of Christ but have not yet received Him into your life, what better time than this Christmas season? Many in government need to find eternal life today as well—intercede that their hearts would be softened to know the only One who saves.
