So sorry. I understand to some degree what you went through. I had a cousin, he was charming, witty, fun to be with, but could not stop drinking. Started in his teens and never stopped. His mother, a gentle, kind, quiet lady, was worried sick about him.. all the time.
He could not have had a better mother, and his two sisters loved him but could not get through to him, that he was killing himself. I think his father chose to give up on him. He had a good childhood, not a wealthy, but a loving home.
His stay-at-home wife left him and took the two children. He would drink away all the money. He must have had some depression, yet he was always kidding around, smiling and seemed fine. That was when I saw him of course, I did not see him as often, or in the same way as his family did.
His doctor told him his liver was in bad shape and if he did not immediately and completely stop drinking he would not last much longer (6 months?) His mom, my aunt said sadly, he just can’t/won’t stop he has, tried AA and other things but he just goes right back to the drink. She begged him to stop.
Then about a year later he died. He was in his 30’s His liver was destroyed. Addiction is a terrible thing and hurts so many, not just the victim himself. I was so sad to hear about his death and kept thinking uselessly what if we had done this or what if I had tried one more time to talk to him.
I asked my doctor about it. He said ‘its a sickness’ it’s not just willpower. There was not much you could have done. I kept thinking about his smile and wondered what was behind it to cause him to choose that path.

We also have family and friends who lost children to addiction, they did so much for those children.
Not being superhuman or having massive wealth to spend on the addicts in the family, they finally had to stop.

When I lived in rural Wales, we would all gather for dinner parties at my sister in law’s 14th century farmhouse. The main course was politics. Things would get pretty heated on occasion but in an entirely civil way (if that makes sense). These parties were exhilarating! We’d put the world to rights over a gorgeous meal, then part as friends.
Boy, do I miss those gatherings…
YES!! I grew up in a VERY blended family…and we had great conversations about all kinds of topics! I remember my very right leaning Southern Baptist mother clashing with my very left leaning atheist uncle and everyone would sit back and watch them go, occasionally throwing out questions or comments. After a while my dad and my aunt (brother and sister) would call time out, we’d all laugh, pour a glass of wine and sit down to a lovely dinner. I miss those days so much, for so many reasons…

One of the few classes in high school I benefited from, I benefited from a LOT, it made the whole thing worth while .
It was an ELECTIVE class, debate 101.
SHOULD have been MANDATORY class, for all students. How to confront , without being confrontational, and how to seek the truth, by subjecting all ideas/positions to the fires of rigorous debate, which burns away false truths and deceptions while truth emerges unscathed.
As a result of that experience, I USED to seek out those I deemed as intelligent and with an opposite point of view to my own, in order to debate them.
Alas, had to stop that some time ago, and I REALLY miss having a good debate!
Dutch, my grandson took a class in debate in high school…on his own initiative. That thrilled me no end, I can’t tell you. He enjoys , as you say, dismantling views of others without being confrontational…vigorous but civil debate.
Just like those dinner parties I miss so much.
So hard to find someone to debate “the other side” with me, that understands the concept and won’t end up putting their fingers in their ears and going “Nah, nah, nah I can’t HEAR you!” literally or figuratively…

I can personally attest to the value of vetting ideas with an open mind. dutchman has saved me from assuming false premises and gently guided me to examine alternative perspectives. The pursuit of truth is the only important goal. However human nature will drive some to protect cherished beliefs. I am learning, but the more I have learned the more disturbed I’ve become.
