I like that. Starting at 3:56 the bass drone. Turns out that in the Renaissance there was a piece composed a lot like this. Jump forward if you will to the 6:18 mark in this Segovia recording. Its a standard in the Guitar world. Of course it is not nuanced like this piece but it is in lowered “D” tuning.
Will Ackerman (Windham Hill New Age) often used alternate tuning in his music. I have a book of his compositions. Very interesting. . . 🙂

What is pretty cool is to see a professional guitarist tune a string up and down mid-stream. After school and after a bit of time passed, I took lessons from Paul VonDiziano at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. He showed me that if you turn the string down 1 whole step lower than your target, then up to the target you would get a perfect result. In other words, down from E to C then up to D.

I “get”your post perfectly well. I still enjoy going to master-classes just to spectate and knowing full well that the great players participating on stage will, with lots of hard work, attain a level of competence I’ve decided I would never attain . . .
I arrived at this very personal epiphany in a very direct way. I was at a Pepe’ Romero master-class when demonstrated a passage (can’t remember what it was, Rodrigo perhaps) . . . Suddenly I realized that no matter how hard I worked, how much I desired that kind of success, I could never come close to the level of virtuosity I was was witnessing.
For some this would be a crushing realization, but for me I instead felt a sense of great relief—I could love the guitar, love the music but could be entirely comfortable being “good” but never “great”. I’ve told this story to ‘Pepe on several occasions and each time I’ve been met with a knowing smile.
Thanks Garrison, exactly. I’m sure in your best moments your guitar work is incomparable but that’s what you are really saying – you can please yourself, sometimes flat out amaze yourself but still realize that there are plenty of absolutely superb guitarists on the circuit that are almost superhuman musically.
That is certainly me although I have a hunch that you are a much better musician than I. In spite of taking advantage of amazing mentors and having a supportive wife and family, I realized quite a few years ago that I like who I am and that I am not a concert guitarist.

Mutton was an important source of protein for the UK and in fact all of the commonwealth during WW II. Americans that made the trip across the Atlantic on a British flagged ship and wrote about it, did not fail to remark about the steady diet of mutton in less than flattering terms.
They were lucky to have a steady diet of anything protein during the WW2. In the UK during the war there was strict rationing, meat was very scarce. People ate stuff they normally would not have like whale meat if they could get it, rabbit, disgusting stuff. some horrible stuff called Snoek?

if a can of meat like spam or corned beef was available it had to last a while with one thin slice for person each to try to add taste to the potato that was the main part of the meal. Lamb was a luxury as was pork and beef. Sometimes couple of sausages would be the meat ration for the week, that were light on meat and were mostly flavored breadcrumbs inside. Vegetables were only available if the shops had them often they did not, maybe you could get a couple of carrots, and a tomato if you were lucky. shops could only sell what was available to them, often not much was. If you had a little garden you tried to grow a few things, mostly potatoes.
The British soldiers were given somewhat better food naturally. The American soldiers probably ate well. but remember importing food was difficult, importing anything was difficult as the Germans sank the transporting ships from their submarines
There was a good series called Foyle’s War about a policeman in a small town on the south East coast of Britain and life during WW2 there. See it from the beginning.(about 2003?) It is very authentic and enjoyable.. Look it up and read about it. One episode there was as an office contest and the prize was a large onion. 🙂

Anyway calorie restriction/deprivation is so far the ONLY think that promotes longevity. Think of little old British ladies having tea and toast and sitting all rugged up in front of the telly. There are many centenarians in that cohort.

Yes, rationing was very strict for the Brits. And yes during the first two years of war Britain was on the verge of starvation at times. Churchill said that of all the battles of WW II the Battle of the Atlantic worried him the most. This was because the U-boats were sinking tonnage faster than it could be produced. At one time it got so desperate Churchill ordered that ships carrying vital food stuffs have priority for unloading and pleaded with the longshoremen to work even longer hours to unload the ships.
But after May of 1943 the back of Donitz’s U-boat campaign was broken and never again come close to rising to the threat it had been in 1941 and 42.
That result came from better escorted convoys, hunter killer groups not required to stick with a convoy that could stay and keep the U-boats down and better depth charges and the introduction of the hedgehog, and better ASDIC (Sonar).
Those all helped but even more important was the increasing numbers of escort carriers and the VLR B-24 that closed the mid-Atlantic gap. Aircraft scouting ahead of convoys forced U-boats to dive and sat on them so they could not surface while they warned the convoy so it could change course to avoid them. The U-boats did not have the submerged speed to get in position to fire on the ships and innovations like the snorkel were a dead give away because of the wake they left when the sub was moving at high speed.
And because of airborne radar the cloak of darkness which had before aided the U-boats greatly now became a detriment. B-24s, Lockheed Venturas, and Suderland flying boats hunted the U-boats day and night. Mosquitos and Beaufighters hunted them during the day. There was no respite and the most dangerous time came when a U-boat and departing or coming in from patrol and had to stay on the surface because of the anti-submarine nets and other defenses used to protect their ports from attack.
And the final and very important factor was that US ship yards launched far more ship tonnage far quicker than anyone in the military or governments on either side of the Atlantic imagined they could.
As for rationing. The US diverted a lower percentage of its manufacturing and agricultural output to the war effort than any other major combatant on either side. Thus the US citizens, despite the rationing, could buy stuff that was impossible to find in Britian or Germany. An American housewife could buy things like vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and typewriters, throughout the war. Such things were not in abundance of variety but they were available. And food and tire rationing, was far less stringent than in any of the other countries.
The US military members were supplied with and could buy stuff in quantities the British simply could not get. Beef and pork, eggs, Fresh and canned fruit, sugar, flour, chocolate, and even good cigarettes and chewing gum found their way into many a British home from US messes and PX’s via US troops that shared. And the US service members were still the best fed of all the major combatants.
And even with that, 1,000s of tons of provisions were available to ship to the UK and the Soviets. Then after the war many 1,000s of Europeans on the mainland avoided starvation because of the larder supplied by the US.

That. *THAT* is one of the key points that is lost on politicians and business leaders today.
They have gleefully driven manufacturing out of the US, and they are proud of it.
Trump knows the value of US manufacturing and tried to bring it back.

Even back then steel was the key shortage. The mills simply could not produce enough and so some new ones were built. Including one built by Kaiser in California to supply the west coast ship yards.
Kaiser Steel, Fontana, CA.
Even before the war industries on in the west had been suffering from a steel shortage for a decade. Then with Kaiser building multiple massive ship yards on the west coast the problem came to a head. And so just about the time that lend lease was starting to hit it’s stride Henry Kaiser wangled an interview with FDR.
He showed him the plans for a 150 million dollar steel production complex and told the president he could draw all the electrical power needed from the plant from existing Hydro-electric dams Kaiser and Six Companies had already built. The plant would produce all the steel plate the yards on the west coast needed to build the Liberty Ships he and others were building.
The President liked the idea and pushed him on to a panel of Government engineers. They thought Kasier was crazy.
He had not arranged financing.
He did not have a site.
They claimed a plant in Southern California would be vulnerable to attack by the Japanese.
They saw that Kaiser had no plan for the plants utilization after the war.
The current big steel companies were all against the idea.
And above all they pointed out that Kaiser didn’t know squat about building steel mills or making steel!
But reality trumped all eventually. That reality dawned on all the objectors in Feb, 1942, just two months into the war the US was facing an estimated shortfall of 4.5 million tons of steel.
Kaiser got the loans with the proviso that the location of the plant be at least 50 miles from the coast and that the plant would have a turbo-blower (a critical piece of equipment for the newest method of producing steel in high volumes at the time).
As Kasier walked out of the meeting he turned to his lawyer and asked him “What’s a turbo-blower?”.
That was the Kaiser way. What ever it is, we can do it, even if he wasn’t sure exactly that “it” was!
And they did do it.
The land at Fontana was cheap, being mostly hog farms, and orange and walnut groves. It was located near the junction of three major railroads. And the area provided a source of plenty of cheap labor.
And that is why the plant was located what was 3 miles east of Fontana at the time.
The single major problem Kaiser’s people faced was there was not natural water sources nearby. They drilled their own wells and came up with ingenious ways to recycle the 160,000 gallons of water they would need each day for production.
The San Bernadino council were supporters but worried about the winds carrying the smoke and soot from the smokestacks and so Kaiser had a scrubbing system installed. It was the most advanced pollution control technology in the country at the time.
Experts in blast furnaces, rolling mills, coveyors and everything else that would go into the plant flocked to the new project to be part of the dream. They knew that under Kaiser it would be a plant like no other. That was the power of the Kaiser name, founded on the building of the great dams during the depression.
That is spectacular history, along with a healthy dose of the AmeriCAN(!) way of thinking!

The biggest reason the U-boat campaign failed is that the Germans failed to plan for it. They did not have anywhere near enough boats that could fight the British when the war started. Had they built a sizable fleet of U-Boats, instead of useless Heavy Battle Cruisers and Battleships, they could have succeeded before all those great improvements were made.
They started the war with just 57. By the end of the war they had commissioned over 1100.

Your knowledge of the shipping problems is really interesting. So many men lost their lives trying get those supplies over to England. A relative of mine worked for the Air Ministry. He was doing secret work to perfect radar for aircraft. Yes, Radar was crucial to victory. He did not smoke but he died young of lung cancer just before the war ended.
Also, sadly there was a black market. The black marketiers were loathed by most Brits. The stuff was stolen from the docks as some people tried to enrich themselves. Some people who could pay the price were able to buy some of those extras that normal everyday people never saw. Most Black Market men kept well under the radar. You had to know someone.
They were despised by some as much as the vile looters who scavenged the bombed out houses. Sometimes looting when the victims of the German bombs could still be there in the rubble, and even unexploded bombs There are still many unexploded bombs still in the ground in the UK and in parts of Europe. Every so often they are found.
Not Surprising. and this is just London. All other cities were bombed too.

All told, about 72,000 merchant marines and naval personnel on the Allied side in the Battle of the Atlantic.
About 30,000 German submariners. In fact German submariners as a percentage of losses was the most dangerous branch of service in any of the armed forces on either side.
The same can be said for American submariners in the Pacific. 52 boats on eternal patrol, most of them with their full crews.
Incredible losses. Just imagine the stories they could tell.

Loved, LOVE Foyle’s War, jb. Just superb! We return to the whole series often, especially as the rest of British offerings which we favour are now unwatchable. Remember the onion episode well. My husband grew up in post WWII Britain in those rationing days. Meat of any kind was not on the menus in his house. Except for the occasional sausage. Gave “poor” a whole new meaning.
Foyles war was great. I have cancelled my cable, nothin on except the very rare and usually much repeated British crime drama, like ‘Vera’ or ‘Lewis’ etc and as you know, they have become more and more nauseatingly politically correct.

One of my most joyful vacation memories was being stuck on a bridge near Feltre, Italy, when the sheep were being herded up to high pasture. A river of sheep streamed past our car with the intermittent guard donkey joining in the mix. My cousin and I laughed and laughed. I can’t imagine how hard it is to care year round for a massive flock of sheep. I’m glad folks do, though, as I love tasty lamb, sheep’s milk cheeses, and wool sweaters.
On a side note, my better half and I, both suburban raised, raised dairy goats for many years. The big lesson I learned is that you have to be smarter than a goat in order to keep them fenced in. It was a humbling experience.

The sheep herders should consider getting border collies. to help . Someone I think it was Betsy? who posted a video not too long ago showing the amazing speed and skill of the Border Collies. That breed, I believe, is the smartest there is.

After 9/11 no one told America to wrap up operations in Afghanistan in weeks. We stayed 20 yrs fighting a terror organization only to on our way hand the country over to another terror group.
In WWII no one said America needed to avoid German or Japanese civilian casualties.
During WWII no one expected the Allied forces to send humanitarian aid to the German and Japanese civilian populations. Everyone knew that the Nazis and Japanese would grab any humanitarian aid and use it for the war effort.

From what I saw last night on Twitter the overall internet reaction to Blinken’s demands to the Israeli War Cabinet was negative. People immediately recognized that Blinken was trying to sabotage Israel’s ability to win the war.

Returned From Gaza Today.
-We had 8 hostages back after 55 days in captivity. As a note there are two of them 17, 18 old brother and sister who are Bedouin, their images are above on the top right. (Bedouin are Muslim Nomads who settled mainly in South Israel. They are about 3.5% of Israeli population and the Arabs as a whole are 21%. They are Arabs. They are known to have low income and high crime rate. There are some 300-450 of them volunteering to the IDF per year. We have a special Bedouin unit that is specialized in tracking in the desert. The are amazing trackers. Overall I think more are hostile to Israel but it’s not all of them.).ֶ
Note: There were a few incidents in the 10/7 that Bedouins risked their lives and saved Jews,
there was one killed when tried to save a jewish man, rockets killed 17 Bedouin lives
(6 children). There is footage of Hamas torture a Bedouin and kill him. His family went on TV and offered a lot of money to whoever identify the killers. They want to take revenge.
There were also some 6-7 Bedouin hostages.
140 hostages are still in Gaza.
-Death toll of yesterday’s shooting terror attacker in Jerusalem is 4. Some 10 injured. The terrorists were shot and killed. They were both previously in Israeli prisons for terror. They are from East Jerusalem and are brothers. One of them was dangerous and was 10 years in prison. The subject of releasing terrorists into our streets is arising. Israeli judicial system is liberal and not compatible with the circumstances of the area. WE had a whole crisis about reforming it. It’s a whole huge subject so I am just mentioning it here.
-Israel agreed for another day of ceasefire for 10 hostages. It’s too soon to tell who will be released. Shortly after the deal Hamas fired some rockets to Israel which were intercepted. Note: by the time I finished this update it seems like the ceasefire came to an end.
-The Palestinian terrorists who were released almost all to the West Bank were welcomed by cheering crowds with green Hamas Flags. There is a general feeling that Hamas is becoming much stronger in the West Bank. They could possibly overcome the Palestinian Authority like they did in Gaza. This is another reason why we must crush Hamas.
-One of the released Israeli women (21 years old) was forced just before the release to say that she was treated well. Said so while surrounded by armed Hamas After the release her mom said that she had an arm injury and had a surgery done on it by a veterinarian. Her arm doesn’t look good. It’s too soon to tell but there may have been rapes in captivity. So far I heard so but it’s still a rumor. I will let you know if I know for sure.
-Emily the little girl who was released after her father thought she was dead and later he said that she is “broken”, have now appeared smiling. The picture tells it all so I am posting it here below.
-Hamas released a psychological cruel video of the father of the Bibles family (the family of the baby Kfir and his red haired brother and mother). I didn’t watch it but it was written that he was crying and saying that his family is dead and we failed to release them.
The IDF insists that their death is not confirmed.
-The follwing just happened and can change in different directions.
Speaker of the IDF said that Hamas violated the agreements and also fired to Israel and the IDF is now attacking in Gaza. This may or may not be the end of the ceasefire. You will have to follow up because the situation just started so it’s hard to tell.
-Palestinians report Jet fighters over Han Yunis (South Gaza). Also repot on exchange of fire in West Gaza.
-Report , Airplanes are hovering over the south of Israel for an hour. (Looks like something is cooking).
-Israel is moving tanks and artillery to south Gaza. Waiting for the Cabinet to give a green light.
-Palestinians are saying IDF is attacking in South Gaza.
-IDF is attacking in Han Yunis (south )and Jabalia (North).
-Apparently Israel didn’t receive a list to be released by the deadline. Additionally Hamas fired rockets. It seems like the end of the ceasefire now unless Hamas offers hostages and persuades Israel to stop.

So the problem is that you would never want to live in Iran, Russia, China if you have any desire to express independent opinion that doesn’t represent the dictators. To those listening, there was always a bit of mystery in His stories, and that has not changed. People read the Bible today and still do not understand what it says. However, the mystery of Christ and His kingdom is not an unknown you must accept.
The Lord always revealed the meaning of His stories to His disciples, and that has not changed either! “These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10).
The book of Mark has two unique parables not found anywhere else in Scripture. One of them is the story of the Growing Seed. A man scatters seed on the ground, then returning home, goes to sleep. Then, while he rests the seed sprouts. The man did what he could do, plant the seed, and God did what only He can do, cause the seed to sprout. The mystery of work in God’s Kingdom is resolved in that partnership!
Today’s parable is applicable to the conflict and division in the world today. God is calling you to be faithful to do what you can, pray and share the hope and love of Jesus Christ. Like the seed-planting farmer, you may take your rest when you have done your part, depending on God to make the miracles happen.

UPDATE: I spoke to my lawyer and I told him what my plans are as it relates to releasing information on X about the J6 set-up and the cover-up that ensued after. Please know that I am fighting for EVERYONE that was aggrieved from the events of J6 and UNITY in our country. I’m not doing this for any financial gain now or in the future but for the reasons I listed above by order of the God I serve. I am a LION and I will protect my cubs. In this case they are EVERYONE in the J6 community as you were set-up and that should not have happened to you even if you did wrong things that day. The police from all 17 agencies that responded to the Capitol to defend it as we should have been more prepared that day. All the people that died on J6 or as a result from that day. All whistleblowers from every agency that put their careers in jeopardy and or lost them because they wanted the truth out and saw what was happening to US citizens because of J6.

seems like he’s had a crisis of conscience about something or other and makes me wonder about the Capitol Police officers that went on and committed suicide after having been working that day, J6, at the Capitol –
did they too have a crisis of conscience and couldn’t live with themselves after realizing what they were part of? We will never know but that question sits in the air.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

One of these fellows is stalking my poultry this morning. He’s a large guy but full sized poultry are a hit oversize for him. May depend on how ravenous he is this morning. Some locals are known to shoot these but I just shake my head. I’d rather lose a free range chicken or two if I must to watch these guys soar.
This little fellow is doctoring on one of my maples this morning.
Maybe a red shouldered hawk? We have one on the lookout for tasty songbirds in our greenbelt.

Thanks Monti! When man disappears nature’s habitat it’s sure there will be pushback. Fox, coyote, bear, deer, etc. we read and hear about it regularly. Seems a sad fate for God’s creatures.
From my branch it brings me much joy to witness some the greatest creations that still exist.

It’s horsetail reed grass. Quite invasive but makes for a good privacy screen. I pull a taught string atop it and hedge clip a butch cut when needed. It’ll soon freeze out, I cut it back to ground level, and it comes back with fervor!
After researching reed grass the invasive part seems prohibitive for my use. I have a patch of bamboo that gets roughly 15 foot tall each year. I believe it to be the same type used for bamboo fishing poles. It slowly spreads and you can cut it down to the ground with a bushhog but it pops right back. I’m contemplating plowing a barrier around it since I do not want to eradicate it but do not need it spreading any further either. It’s non-native and I strive for native landscaping like dogwoods, redbud, oaks, maples and fruit trees.
I especially like the perky little wrens!
They do get into everything though and they will build their nests in places unimaginable.
