✝️ Daily Devotional, November 27, 2023
Spurgeon sure had a gift for expressing thoughts with words; and his love for Jesus can never be questioned. I have always thought this. However, as I have tried to point out a handful of times, (and met with quite remarkable hostility, sorry to say;) while his messages are good, generally speaking, just like this one for example; he has gone quite a bit away from the context of the Scripture he uses.
The context of the words of Nahum the prophet, are against Nineveh, the blasphemous city of the first heathen Antichrist, Nimrod. And the message CLEARLY is not about some ancient history in the forgotten past, utterly insignificant to us now; but about the very Antichrist and the final kingdom of the heathen, WHEN CHRIST RETURNS! which is all that is significant for us in our times.
The statement, “The LORD revenges and is furious . . . ” is simply not about Him being jealous of our affections, or how we spend our time and desire; but about the children of the devil who have slaughtered and destroyed God’s people, and perverted the whole earth with the devil’s thoughts, the devil’s filthy and wicked pride, and violent madness for the throne of God.
Now I’ll say it again; just to calm anyone down, who might be easily upset or scandalized, that anyone dare to say something about such a beloved preacher of the gospel: I do in fact, and have always had a great affection and respect for all the massive volumes of Spurgeon’s writings; but we are still accountable to God, to Jesus, to know the word ourselves, and use the discernment the Holy Spirit gives us through the word; and judge what each other says.
My strong advice, for anyone who is interested; is read the Bible for yourself, and read it all the way through, no less than ten times; taking notes and writing out what you see when you read. If you’ve got something wrong up till now; that’s what we have the Holy Spirit and the word, and each other for; so we can correct what needs to be corrected. If I have been wrong about some things; if Spurgeon, or the Prayer Team at the White house, or the most popular big name preacher in America, gets something wrong; we are under commandment to judge, and to watch over one another, in the same love as Christ loves us.
Sorry for being tedious and whoever I offended; but I think its important to rightly interpret and teach the Scriptures. I have been very fond of Derek Prince’s teachings; but there are a few things that he was dead wrong about. Why he thought, that the rider on the white horse represents the gospel, is quite astonishing; for it is in fact the heathen spirit of Antichrist. why, for example, did he buy into the ridiculous deception about the fallen angels breeding with human women, in Genesis chapter six; when it is CLEARLY about a great falling away and betrayal of the Spirit of God and the faith of Christ. The whole context of the scriptures, once again, make it perfectly clear what every part is about. Apostasy caused the moral collapse of the whole world, just like today.
It is NOT going to be aliens coming down to breed with our women folk, and making a freak race of giants, that makes Jesus come back! It will be, just like it is already now full in the go, the casting away of all restraint, and the transgressors coming to the full, and the faith of MANY Christians failing, as they see all that’s coming on the earth; for which the LORD is coming in fiery vengeance and furious wrath, to burn up the wicked of the earth; when He comes to establish His everlasting kingdom.
Michael, I think people enjoy the freedom (while we still have it) to interpret and apply as they choose. I personally like hearing other viewpoints, but I don’t want to be lectured or scolded. Whether intentional or not, that is what I hear — a lecture.

No, it is not “freedom” to interpret the Scriptures any way we choose. God delivered them to us through His prophets and apostles by His Holy Spirit of Truth. God is not the author of confusion and self will, but of godliness and order. When you say something, for example, to anyone; is it then that person’s right and freedom to interpret it however they like? Or how you meant it? God has no uncertainly in His understanding, and the thoughts and intents of His heart. What He says, He means exactly what He says; and if it takes a sentence or two, or several pages, to express that thought; the context and meaning are one; and cannot be pulled apart to suit the fancies of anyone who might be offended.
Proverbs 6:23 “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”
Proverbs 10:17 “He is in the way of life that keeps instruction: but he that refuses reproof errs.”
Didn’t the Lord say, on numerous occasions, how that the words He Himself speaks, are not His words, but the Father’s who sent Him? And so did He also pass down to His saints, that whoever receives, or does not receive, our words; it is Him that they are doing it to. And how is that loving one another and submitting one to another in the fear of God, by calling it “lecturing and scolding?” I seriously think, that you don’t read or think about at all, what it is I’m writing; but just have an instant reaction to refuse it; and you don’t have to know or care what I’m saying. For NONE of the things you are protesting against, are anything connected with what I wrote!
So what did I write? First, and most sincerely, that I do have great affection and respect for Charles Spurgeon, and have no question whether he loves Jesus. And it is clear by the mountains of books filled up with his sermons, that he had a calling and a gift; which I appreciate and respect.
HOWEVER, we are still accountable to God to discern what each other says and does: we are our brother’s keeper. And if it be Spurgeon, or Derek Prince, or John Calvin, or any modern day teacher; just like the Bereans, we are counted more noble by the Spirit of the LORD, when we search the Scriptures daily, to see if those things are so, which Paul, or Spurgeon, or anyone else, preaches.
And as far as feeling lectured to, or scolded; or simply being upset because someone said, you can’t just think and believe what you want, but how God says we are to think and believe; then that’s something you have to take up with the LORD.
And lastly, ONCE AGAIN! anger and resentment and accusations, instead of receiving the word as it is intended! Name specifically the point you think I am missing. I did say, that the message is good, generally speaking; but that it is taken out of context to the whole meaning, in the place where it appears. Yes, we do need to guard our affections, and not let our desires wander away from the Spirit of Christ, and His calling and election of us. True and faithful friends are who we must be, to the Lord, and to one another in the Lord’s stead. But the meaning, the whole meaning of what the LORD said, about being jealous, “Zealous,” and revenging, is about what He is about to do to the people of the prince that is about to come. It is not zeal and fury and burning anger to His people; but to those who are the persecutors and destroyers of His people.
And the fact that so many “like” your bad reaction to the good and sound words I wrote, shows something of the true nature of many professing love for Jesus, but not love for those He sends.
So the Scriptures are only for a people at a time?
What did Paul say about the Bereans? You search through the Scriptures to see if these things are true…
Our OT were those searched writings.
I have been subjected to many that truly wander from the meaning of the text. Some are spittle and mud men for restoring blind eyes others only teach:Acts 7 Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Proscriptive vs descriptive.
I do not know about you (I can assume?) But I can be hard hearted and need a strong wake-up call from the Lord.
Scripture is meant to speak through the generations of God’s redeeming work.
The people of Nineveh repented. So that generation became children of God not the devil. Thus the word of the Lord was effectual to Them. That word has been a powerful change agent in my life.
I must say you must be careful in making definitive statements about scriptural passages that are open to discussion. Origins of Nephilium and race of gaints is interesting discussion along with fire breathing behemoths. We cannot say yea or nay as these are not deeply explored in the Bible.
Let the plain things be the main things.
Spurgeon was making a valid point, God is patient but does have limits to his mercy. That understanding matters to the children of God as well as those needing to turn to him.
Scriptures mean nothing if we are free to rip them from their context and make them mean whatever we please. That is preaching by the authority of man, camouflaged with scripture.
As for applicability outside of context, that varies. In this case, the jealous God phrase is ripped right out of Exodus, and used in many more places. Above is almost a lazy application, grabbing whichever is remembered at the moment.
It gets more difficult extrapolating say John’s letters to the churches in Revelations to us. But there are plenty of precedents for scriptures to apply both at the time and now.
Take Jesus predicting He would die and be resurrected in three days. Very timely. And the timely part is very important to us even now. But in doing so, He also predicted the Temple would be destroyed and rebuilt. The destruction took 40 odd years before it happened. And 2000 years later, the rebuilding hasn’t yet been fulfilled. Applicable in multiple times.
There are of course those who think the purpose of writing them was for the benefit of all who come afterward. But there is a lot that has to happen for some writing to become treasured scripture. Some of that we haven’t even grasped but the knowledge we have is fascinating to me.

I’m sorry, but I think you may have misunderstood. I can understand that. But NO! That is exactly the point; that the word of God is eternal, and applies to everyone and everything, as it fits. What happened, for example to the ancient cities of Nineveh and Babylon: the prophecies against them came to pass. But in the very language of the prophecies, it is evident, that He is speaking of the great and final fulfilling of that word, at the end of the world, and upon the people of the Antichrist.
We know the beginnings of those cities, and that it was a certain wicked spirit of war and blasphemy against God and against His Anointed, that they were building, and “making a name for themselves.” That Satanic spirit of the beast has never left the world, nor the hearts of the men of the world, ever since; even though their language was confused, and God scattered every family to their own part of the world. At the end, when all restraint is taken away from them, to do what they have all this time imagined to do; THAT is to whom this prophecy is directed!
And as I said; the thought and intention I think was good, in what Spurgeon wrote; but it completely missed the Lesson that God intended in this word; and for that, he is to be faulted.

Then clearly more time has to be spent in the Scriptures, and asking the LORD for understanding, that we may learn; and that He teach us! You can’t just say, Oh, Be careful; things that are not well understood, we shouldn’t mingle with. And worse still, is going along with what’s popular, AND NOT LOOKING IT UP AT ALL FOR YOURSELF!
Jesus said, that whatever we ask of Him, believing that we receive, we shall have. Why would that then exclude understanding of His word? Do you remember when Jesus appeared to them after His resurrection? The first thing He did was, Open their understanding that they should understand Scripture!
The generation that repented was more than a hundred years before Nineveh was destroyed. So when one generation does fear God, and do right, and repent, but the generations after do not fear God, and do not repent, and do not right; then the judgment has already been pronounced. If the people today, who are the descendants of those who repented and did right in the fear of God, if this generation remains hardened in pride and unbelief; then the same word that has been in the world from the beginning to all generations, will take hold of them. Our great great grandparents’ faith and fear and repentance, is not going to answer for us if we take another course in life. So too, if we look at out parents’ unbelief and wrong choices, and consider, and take the way prescribed by the Lord Jesus unto repentance and conversion and life; then whatever was their end, will not be ours.
Way to derail a message.
No; but I think I brought it to a point. For clearly, there are many who like nice soft words and comforts; which is good; we all need soft and comfortable sometimes: but the point about where are our affections and loyalties, evidently is not giving fair hearing to Someone’s words, or caring particularly what He means by them. I feel that the derailing was actually caused by those who are adamantly closed to true interpretation and the intended instruction of the word.
If you go back and read what the Scripture text is, and look up in Nahum where it is said; and then read what Spurgeon wrote; I think it should be obvious, that he quite sidestepped the very thing the LORD was saying, in order to give a simple, non offensive comfortable little message. But if our lives and our words are not accompanied and confirmed by the Holy Spirit convicting people; what good is it? We all would like to be liked and have friends; but isn’t a real friend someone who tells you the truth? I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, or put anyone down. If we really love Jesus, then we will be very jealous that His words are understood and interpreted accurately. What anyone’s reaction then is to the Light, shows in itself that the Light has exposed something that they didn’t want to be exposed. Otherwise, why all the opposition to quite simply, sound teaching according to the Spirit of the Lord?
Michael I think it is obvious that Spurgeon used Nineveh only as an example.
Spurgeon was showing what can happen if you don’t guard our hearts.
Hence, the title/theme ……Guard our Hearts
You focused on the example not the theme of what Spurgeon was saying.

I pray that when the Lord does exercise His fiery vengeance and furious wrath, to burn up the wicked, we are safely to one side. I do have this dread though that we will probably go through it, possibly even need to, in the great “wheat from chaff” sorting. Perhaps if I pray hard enough, together with all of you, we’ll convince the Creator to be a little less vengeful around us. I like to appeal to His kind, loving side – like this.
The Lord knows them that trust in Him, Oldspeak. A sparrow doesn’t fall to the ground without our heavenly Father, and even the hairs of our head are all numbered. We who know our need of the Lord’s mercy, may be less than, and nothing worth, in the estimations of the proud; but the Lord sees our love, and our trying to put our love into actions.
Yes, I think that the Scriptures are abundantly clear on that point; that we will grow alongside the tares up until the time of the harvest; and THEN he will say to the reapers, to first gather the tares into bundles together to be burned; but gather the wheat into My barn. And that He has foretold us all things, is so that we should have understanding of the times, and know what we ought to do, and not be scandalized along with all those many who will be wrongly expecting something else, which the LORD nowhere said it would happen.
Paul wasn’t wrong for begging the Lord three times for the relentless persecution following him everywhere would be taken away; and he accepted it as the will of God, when He told him, My grace is sufficient for you: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Our Master, in the hour of His agony, and the weight of the world’s sin about to be laid on Him, who knew no sin; He begged the Father, that if it is possible, to remove this cup from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours be done. Howsoever we depart this world, we are going home to the Lord; and He knows how He will use us to glorify Jesus. And when he calls us to do anything for Him, He gives us the grace to be able to bear it; and if He has for us to speak for Him, it is the Spirit of our Father who is speaking in us. even so, it will be US who will have to walk by faith and do the doing of His will; and our reward will follow.

I totally teared up. I did lose my hair to chemo – it came back in very fine and white, and then the color came back, with a curl on the ends (gone now, after 3 1/2 years) but straight instead of wavy like before.

Israel Update:
-40 Israelis were so far released. 17 Thais and 1 Philippine national .
16 Children and 5 mothers are still hostage. We are still waiting for Kfir who is a 10 months old baby, his brother 4 year old and the mom. The deal relates to women and children when they define a child as “up to 20 years old but not a soldier.”
One of the mothers in Gaza was separated from her child who was released in the last round, this violates the agreement and they said they “don’t have her” but the released daughter 13 old said “they were together until a couple of days ago.” We want to see Shiri Bibes who was taken with her 4 year old Ariel and the baby Kfir. They are kind of a symbol after they were seen in a video of the kidnapping with their red hair in the hands of mom. We want to see them all. Hamas are asking for more days of ceasefire. That is good news because every additional day should give us 10 more released. If we are at a pause we may as well get more released. At least get the mothers and children all out.
-There is some extra noice about Abygail the 4 year old girl who was released and is an American citizen too and Biden keeps talking about her and waving her release as his personal achievement. I even read here on this platform someone who said that she has an aunt who bought Art from Hunter Biden and is going to adopt her and suggested a conspiracy of a kind. So I looked into it a bit. Here is Abigail’s story.
She has a brother 9 years old and a sister 6 years old. Her mother was shot in front of her. Her father was holding her and got shot too and it appears that he fell on her because she ran to the neighbor and was full of blood from her father. The neighbor with his family and Abigail were kidnapped. The brother and sisters go in a closet and stayed there some 12 hours. They have grandparents around and when I looked into it I saw that the two kids were hosted in the home of an uncle who lives nearby and owns a restaurant. When Abigail was released there was another aunt talking on TV and asking everyone to give the girl privacy.
There is another aunt in Israel who seems to be the wife of the guy who hosted the kids.
She said that “she still doesn’t know what Abygail understands. She said the whole family will be together and taken care of. It is not clear who will take them all. I am sure it will be in Israel as they have so much family and a whole nation behind them.
So I don’t see here some odd conspiracy. I would rather leave politics aside on this one and just care for Abigail and her family and it’s not a “minus” that Biden is talking about her.
I will pay attention to Abigail and let you know how it goes with her.
-Wall Street Journal is saying that Israel hit the next to be released list. 11 people.
Israel confirm there is a list and saying they are discussing it. There seem to be a problem with this list. Doesn’t meet the agreements.
-US Navy said that two ballistic missiles were fired at them from Yemen after they helped rescue a British civilian ship that is owned by an Israeli. The missiles landed 16 KM away from the US ship. Five armed people left the ship on a boat and the US ship got them captured. I don’t have much data about this incident but it looks like a US rescue operation of the captured ship.
-10,000 people in Guatemala conducted a prayer for Israel. An evangelical organized event.
-Adina who is a 72 year old woman from a Kibutz was arguing with a terrorist to let an older woman who is in worse physical shape to go instead of her. Special woman.
She also said that at first when they were taken out of the tunnel they thought they are going to be executed. Adina watched her husband shot before she was kidnaped. She was more upset about the loss of her husband who was also her best friend than the captivity.
-100,000 people in an anti antisemitism demonstration in London.
-Prior to the pause of the fighting the IDF assassinated senior Hamas people, Commander of the North Brigade, Commander Head of Rocket Operations, Deputy Commander of the North Brigade. and two more high commanders. It was an airstrike on a specific tunnel, those commanders were in that tunnel.

In this portion of the hymn of Daniel, according to Dr. John Walvoord, “Daniel’s faith also contemplated a God greater than any king, and who could, therefore, remove or set up any monarch.” While God often allows humans to select leaders, as in the United States, He could easily override the decision “of the people” by various circumstances.
C.S. Lewis said, “Every prayer in the universe falls into two categories: Your will be done or my will be done.” It is God’s plan that those who follow Him “may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2). Dr. J. Vernon McGee stated, “The perfect will of God comes to the rescue of the permissive will of God.”
The bottom line is to trust the Lord and His sovereignty over all things. Study His Word to know His will for all humankind, “That you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days“ (Deuteronomy 30:20, NKJV). And Jesus added that you should also love your neighbor as yourself.
Pray that the people of America would recognize Who is really in charge and submit their lives to Him.

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. I’m halfway up the trail on my daily hike and it’s super windy. I always enjoy watching the ravens and hawks when I get higher up. Just now I saw a group of 5 sparrows who seemed to be getting tossed about coming up from a saddleback, but once they got over they darted away in control. It occurred to me they were in control the whole time, but it’s just more difficult in these conditions. I may very well be mistaken, but I choose to believe God wanted me to see that and have hope. I know He watches me 🙂

Some politicians are arrogant, elitist and think the public are stupid, with short memories. Some, like Boris, can be charming, but have no real substance, no strongly held principles, like actually standing for something other than personal whims, self-gratification and aggrandizement..
His charm wears thin when you see the lack of commitment to what the people expected of a Conservative PM. Their trust was betrayed. Boris sits on the fence to see which way the wind is blowing or what the polls are saying.
He has interesting ancestors, being descended from George II of England (he even looks like him)and has links to other European noble families. He is said to admire Winston Churchill. One would think then that he would emulate Churchill and be the patriot Churchill was, (who was also from a noble family) but alas, Boris is weak, and ‘virtue signals’ political correctness(like so many politicians.)
