I did not know this fact. I knew about meth, but I would have assumed that alcohol was a bigger factor in poor parenting.

Cannabis is TERRIBLE for parenting, especially of young kids. It makes users lazy and prioritizes sensation over emotion.
The bigger problem is that we raised a generation that was completely and thoroughly indoctrinated via a public school system that while saying the were teaching the 3 “R’s” (respect, responsibility and whatever. The other 3 “r’s” were gone a long time ago) were teaching if it feels good do it.
This generation has no clue what they are doing and have been taught that pot is harmless.
Yes, there are gems in this generation but for the most part, there is a large number using substances and waking up in the morning (maybe) wondering who is going to pay their rent today, and then finding someone to do it.
Pot, meth, fentanyl (found outside on the sidewalk in this community) booze, if it feels good do it. We need to turn this around and fast.
That could be why some of the comments are so touchy about te idea that marijuana use can be bad for society, and deliberately misconstrue Alex’s remarks.
I’m in one of the big legal pot states and I am very well read on the subject. Can’t stand the sight of pot shops on every corner, think the legalization push was done horribly wrong, and grow cannabis in my backyard for the medicine (purpose = stopping melanoma).
People are so touchy. I had to really think before I even wrote.
People can, obviously, be addicted to pot but pot acts in the brain differently that other substances which is why you don’t die from a pot overdose. The legalization push wrongly presents pot as harmless. It is not, but it also acts on the body in amazing ways. Legalization was and is a double edge sword.
The population has become too lazy to research and long term smokers are just happy they can go to the pot shop and get a senior discount. Young people are thrilled they can go to work high. Neither of these two groups are paying too much attention to THC’s negative impact on higher brain functions although of the two, imo, the younger group is screwed. They are using crazy high levels of THC. The old stoners were never using this high of level. Whatever.
It’s a gigantic mess. But it is government.

I definitely support medicinal marijuana laws but here in NC we do not have that. I do have a relative in another state that has legalized medicinal marijuana and he has Parkinson’s and that is one of the diseases that marijuana is specifically prescribed for and it really as helped him.
However, I have changed my mind on recreational marijuana. First of all, I do know people who have been smoking it for 50 years on a daily basis and it does affect the brain cells. The thinking processes are screwed up. I can always tell without asking if someone has been been smoking this stuff daily for a long time.
Also, the smell. I was in DC a couple of years ago walking the streets of Georgetown and it reeked of MJ smoke. MJ is legal in DC. They can’t smoke it in public but clearly they can sit in windows and doors and smoke and stink up the entire town. Some of the stuff smells like skunk. I do not want to be exposed to it in any form and I was a hippie in the 60’s and I did inhale but I don’t think you should be free to expose others to the stink and smoke. And the new day stuff is more potent and people are smoking it at younger ages…my generation were college students, to day is high school and younger.
In the midwest, it smells like skunk. So I wonder what kind of additives have been placed into the substance, that in 10+ years we will find out, are harmful to the human body?

It is a mess. we are also going to see psychedelics legalized federally within the next few years. I don’t have as much of a problem with that as I do with marijuana, other than the mass brainwashing potential being a HUGE concern.
They are going to be legalized because of the alleged benefits they offer when used by a trained (and ethical) psychologist, which should raise big red flags about who else will be using them for less ethical purposes.
This story just posted. Seems that these reckless dirt-bags are going to try and nationalize legal pot next year as a campaign issue like they’re already laying the groundwork to do with abortion.

“Legalization” was a tax and regulation scam that benefited tobacco companies, cartels, and politicians. Pot is nothing more than a plant that anyone could grow themselves. It should have been just left completely alone, no laws at all. This would have prevented massive corruption.
I remain pretty cynical about most of the claims for needing “medical marijuana” and suspect that these are rationalizations, excuses, or placebo effects, with the possible exception of immediate nausea relief. Research remains ongoing about curating and concentrating various substances in the plant for drug manufacturing for various other ills, but this is not the same as smoking some weed.

Yes! Our schools have gotten progressively worst over the years. CRT, DEI, White Privileged, Gender Dysphoria, etc is common teaching in K-12 and in college. This while teaching math, science, english and accurate history is being reduced-Tests show the results.
Also our society has become a ME oriented society focused on a flawed theme of social justice. Protesting, rioting, bullying, shutting down speech is the new norm of many of our youth. Fairness, truth, respect is not important anymore as long as they get their way.
The Greatest Generation that survived the Great Depression and WWII has been lost to the Me Too Generation educated by the internet and identity issues.
We were taught as kids-lying is bad, cheating is bad, be respectful, be responsible, no bullying, etc. Remember Pinocchio, George Washington and the Cherry Tree, the boy who cried wolf, liar liar pants on fire……So many stories to teach our kids to be honest and respectful, but no more.
So many things in our new culture are creating division and hatred it’s no wonder we have all the problems we have in our society.

I wonder on this one in our so called “culture”….is there an increase of female teachers getting arrested for sexual relationships with their students? Or do we just hear about it more? I know we see it in the news…some of these ‘teachers’ seem to be the same age as the targeted victim.
We have shifted significantly over the last 50 years. We are less religious, less family oriented, much more sexually driven, and, I think, less morally driven. We are a if it feels good do it driven, the means justifies the ends, etc. if you have to lie or cheat to get your way, not a problem.
Anyway, I could go on an on about the changes in our morale compass from my youth and I think that’s what has driven our culture and society into the mess we are in today.
I think it all goes back to Sigmund Freud. His theories about psychosexual development require a tradition family dynamic and a mother capable of normal friendship with a child in order for that child to psychologically grow up to be a healthy adult.
The ‘free love’ movement was pure evil because it destroyed many women’s ability to be a mother rather than a sexual competitor to their child.
I think Freud did a fine job showing us why we are now seeing all the extreme attention seeking behavior. This is why Freud has been cancelled by the cult of psychology. For the same reason as the WHO making a statement that transgenderism is mental illness but should not be referred to as such because it would be mean.

I would prefer they first released all the videos that showed the police attacking peaceful protesters and suggested Fedsurrection. I noticed and am concerned about the “almost all” statement as well.
I remember that four Capitol/DC policemen committed suicide soon after J6. That seemed really strange to me. It was covered in the news briefly mainly blaming rioters for the reason.
That made no sense.
Just wondering if these policemen saw a lot of fabricated stuff during J6 and wasn’t going to go along with it. Probably not the case, but things conspiracies are made of. I sure don’t remember any real investigations or reporting on these suicides.

It’s a good thing the House GOP elected a “real” Republican leader the other day. In his debut action the new GOP Speaker kept the government open, by golly, and did so with a huge majority of, well, Democrats!
That’s right. Among the 336 votes for Johnson’s continuing resolution 209 or 62% were Democrats. By contrast, among the 95 nay votes, 98% were cast by Republicans. We’d guess the two Dems who voted “nay” may possibly be color blind.
In any event, the public debt weighed in at $16.4 trillion in 2013, and it had taken 226 years to get there. Now, in single decade that figure has doubled to $33.2 trillion and we are just getting started. Factor in the built-in policy deficits and another overdue recession in the next year or two, and we will be at the $50 trillion mark well before the end of the current decade.
To put it more dramatically, we recall well the angst that overcame the Reagan White House in early 1981 when it became necessary to raise the debt ceiling above $1 trillion to finance the red ink inherited from Jimmy Carter. Whatever was the financial equivalent of turning into a pillar of salt, believers in the old-time GOP religion of balanced budgets feared it was about to happen.
No more. The public debt has gone from $1 trillion to what will be $50 trillion in barely five decades. And yet today’s GOP cannot even seem to elect a Speaker who will take a stand for even the mildest gesture of fiscal restraint.

An illegal alien convicted of raping a child in Brazil has been found living on Martha’s Vineyard, the elite island off the coast of Massachusetts, after having successfully crossed the United States-Mexico border.
Saulo Cardosa, a 37-year-old illegal alien from Brazil, was arrested on Martha’s Vineyard by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents this month, according to Ted Daniel with Boston 25 News.
In May 2019, Cardosa was convicted of raping a five-year-old child in Brazil and subsequently sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Sometime after his conviction, Cardosa fled to the United States by illegally crossing the nation’s porous southern border where millions of “got-aways” enter, undetected by Border Patrol, every year.
ICE agents were eventually alerted by international authorities that Cardosa may have been living in the United States as an illegal alien and an investigation was launched. ICE agents ultimately discovered Cardosa living on Martha’s Vineyard and arrested him.
Cardosa remains in ICE custody pending deportation to Brazil.

Concerning “endless war,” lethal conflicts over religion, hubris, exceptionalism, decline of nation-states, and other such items rising today…
The 30 Years’ War – a complex affair which involved most of continental Western Europe including Denmark and Sweden (England did occasionally meddle in it) – involved two men of interest, one whom you will probably recognize, the other being less likely. It involved conflicts of Catholic versus Protestant, peasants versus aristocrats, and France attempting to thwart the Catholic Habsburg/Holy Roman Empire from surrounding and dominating.
Caveat: The following is greatly simplified!
Albrecht von Wallenstein was a Bohemian prince in the Holy Roman Empire. The conflict began in Prague, and so he was involved very early in the first phase of the war.
One aspect of the war is that it was a civil/religious war of (mostly German) Catholics against (mostly German) Protestants, but that was only one. Cardinal Richelieu, in charge of France de facto (he was the main adviser to the queen mother, regent for the child-king Louis XIII), saw an opportunity to weaken the Habsburg Empire by supporting the Protestant side and Protestant nations willing to do the same, perhaps by direct intervention (Denmark and Sweden).
And so French money began to pour into the conflict to prevent a Catholic Habsburg victory.
Wallenstein won a good number of victories, but as the war reached a stalemate, he realized that the war was not worth it, and against the emperor’s wishes he opened up secret negotiations to end the conflict.
France had earlier learned the lesson that a civil war about religion simply devoured the nation from within. King Henry IV, switching sides in the later 1500’s from Protestant to Catholic, was able to end a seemingly “endless war.
Richelieu grew up in the aftermath of this hostile, destructive atmosphere, which had led to French intellectuals and others of the French elites that France was a in a decline. Richelieu and others wanted to reverse this decline and proceeded to take measures to do so. One aspect was the assertion of “French exceptionalism,” i.e. that France had a unique Roman and Celto-Germanic heritage indicating that it should be a leader of allies (weaker allies like Denmark and Sweden), and a leader culturally, but not (necessarily) an empire.
And so, “covert warfare” was one of the hallmarks of Cardinal Richelieu’s foreign policy: keep your enemy fighting somewhere somehow to exhaust him. This was successful for most of the war in Central Europe. Only toward the end did the French send in troops to provide support to the princes and others revolting against the Catholic emperor.
You will note that this Catholic cardinal was a French nationalist first: his membership in the Catholic Church as a cardinal did not seem to interfere with his political decisions most of the time.
In the meantime, the hubris of the Habsburg emperor, who wanted to re-Catholicize Central Europe for his own power, led him to assassinate Wallenstein, his own general, for daring to seek peace with the Protestants and their foreign allies.
Central Europe would therefore need 30 years (1618-1648) to learn the lesson that religious wars are worthless, and that religious toleration (as in France’s Edict of Nantes under Henry IV) was the proper road to follow.
And so, we see that one of the “laws” of warfare is that – at some point – it becomes absurd to keep fighting. Usually that absurdity is massive loss of population, massive economic loss, or both.
However, warfare can pay! In earlier days it paid by the booty and land taken from the conquered area.
Today, we see a variation on a theme: warfare pays, but not for the nation states! It pays for the global elites who profit from the companies selling armaments and other types of support for the fighting.
We see precisely the situation warned of famously by President Eisenhower: a military-industrial complex whose raison d’être depends on the existence of warfare on a consistent basis. True, a profit can be made from the threat of warfare and the constant need for vigilance and advancement in defense.
However, actual warfare can bring them much more profit.
The lessons of The Thirty Years’ War have not been learned by the modern Islamic forces, still living in the medieval fog of a World Caliphate and the extinction of other religions. “The religion of peace” might have peaceful adherents, but they seem to be a minority.
The hubris of our elites, the religious fanaticism, the cool calculations of certain heads of state, the bankrupting and destruction of nations, nationalism versus internationalism, all of this has happened before in similar ways in Central Europe in The Thirty Years’ War.
In fact, America benefited from it: in the later 1600’s, the aftermath of the destruction was still so widespread, and the desire for religious freedom so great, that many Germans packed up and came to America, beginning in 1683.
That America is now perhaps repeating the same mistakes 360 years later shows a sad lack of historical knowledge among our leaders, or, if they are aware of it, a sad hubris making them think they are immune to the consequences of their hubris!

The English historian Cicely Wedgwood (publishing as C.V. Wedgwood) was a not just a great historian, but also an excellent writer, who specialized in early modern European History.
If her book on the 30 Years’ War is not what you are reading, you might try hers. She also wrote an excellent biography of Wallenstein.
If you are reading the book by Harvard historian Peter Wilson, yes, it is perhaps too detailed for beginners.

Ausonius: I read a lengthy, well referenced tomb on th 30 Years War and still don’t know what happened. Something about people getting tossed out a window and bunch of Holy Romans and Protestants killing each other.
When I was teaching Advanced Placement European History, I found The 30 Years’ War (1618-1648) extremely salient and fascinating not just for its length, but for the characters involved and its effects on Western Europe and – therefore – its influence on early American settlement, and, as mentioned above, similar to things happening today.
Again, as mentioned above, I found the belief among French aristocrats and intellectuals that France was declining because of its nearly suicidal civil war known as The French Wars of Religion.
“Declinism” in France was turned around, not by democratic forces, which did not exist as such (politically, France was still mainly medieval), but by the same aristocratic and intellectual leaders who believed France was “exceptional.”
Later, of course, we see Louis XIV and Royal Absolutism attempt to marginalize the power of the aristocrats and oppress the peasants with high taxes (who were still renting land from the nobles, who themselves had exemptions from taxes).
Thus the stage was unwittingly being set for The French Revolution 4 generations before it happened.

It was the 1970s. Dry cleaning bags lurked quietly behind couches waiting patiently for the opportunity to pounce on the hapless child who dropped a Lego nearby. Unguarded five-gallon buckets stood brazenly in the middle of basement floors hoping to entice their next drowning victim. Discarded refrigerators prowled the land looking for unsuspecting eight-year-olds to gobble up. GI Joes and Barbies, with the help of their little owners, were making out everywhere.
It is the 2020s. Entire schools ban peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because maybe one kid might have an allergy. Parents get visits from county protective services for letting their children play unsupervised in the park across the street. Jungle gyms are an endangered species. And third-graders are taught to not impose cisnormative constructs, let alone behaviors, on anyone or anything.
The odd thing is that the events described in the first paragraph (except the GI Joe one) were not actually happening on any grand scale. The sad thing is that the events in the second paragraph are.
Admittedly there were children – one assumes – who did manage to trap themselves inside random refrigerators, hence the televised public service announcements (seriously, and such a seventies solution) asking the public to at least take the handle off of the appliance before heaving it over an embankment or leaving it in a burned-lot in the Bronx.
And admittedly – again, one assumes – a child somewhere somehow managed to get themselves tangled up in a dry cleaning bag. As to the bucket problem, that one is rather hard to fathom but it must have happened at least once to spawn the lawsuit that forced manufacturers to put drowning warnings – complete with a graphic depiction of the inept toddler – on their buckets.
Whether it was caused by the misadventures of Darwin’s children, the ever-burgeoning personal injury litigation field, a cherry-picking sensationalist media, humanity’s inability to comprehend statistics, or some combination thereof, society has clearly shifted drastically from a relatively laissez-faire approach to common hazards to – not just a risk aversion or risk reduction model – the codified elimination of risk.

Levels in food either exceed limits in food or they are “acceptable”. Not providing that information is a serious knock against the scaremongers who write these screeds.

Parts per billion is small. Say you weigh 100 kg. (~220 lbs). That is 10^5 g. Ppb is 10^-4 g. 0.1 mg. 100 millionths of a gram. There are medicines whose active dose is in millionths of a gram. But most use much more material.
The issue though is more complex. How does the body process the material? How is it disposed? What is its dwell time. What does it do to the body? What levels are safe? What levels cause harm? What is harmed? Does it recover or does the damage only accumulate? What does it do to children? Etc.
Lots of legal limits were set in law when ppm, parts per million, was what we could detect. As you noticed we have vastly improved detection ability. Ppb was passed by some time ago and it won’t be long before the scaremongering is in ppt, parts per trillion.
The scaremongers will always imitate Ralph Nader ‘unsafe at any speed’. Just replace speed with level. We need real safety limits. Unfortunately, I don’t trust the organizations with a stake in the results either.

The Islamists, including the Palestinian Authority (sic), make it quite clear that the only reason they would take a state in Judea and Samaria would be to use it to launch attacks to get what they really want, which is to get rid of the Jews who they see as occupying all of the land that was once ruled by Muslims and therefore must return to Muslim rule.

The Biden Administration’s plan empowers the FCC to regulate every aspect of the Internet sector for the first time ever. The plan is motivated by an ideology of government control that is not compatible with the fundamental precepts of free market capitalism.
