Garrison is right about Bustelo being probably the highest quality for a reasonable price. Our local brand (H&C) changed for the worse about a year ago and brewing Choc Full of Nuts since interspersed with Bustelo.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I miss those glorious fragrances of freshly roasted and ground coffee in the supermarket aisles when you did your own. That fragrance was only exceeded by the “whole house” wake up call of the percolator pulling you to the kitchen. Most coffee seemed like good coffee back in the day. The days before instant and freeze dried and low quality brews.

Just sitting down for a few spare minutes with my instant coffee…but it is from Mexico and quite tasty. Mine has foam. And since my grandkids all call me “Bucca” (long story but it does make sense, sort of😉) I call it my Starbucca’s coffee. Costs a fraction of the real thing and tastes a heck of a lot better, too! 👍🏻
My wife and I have been hooked on Piñon coffee from New Mexico ever since visiting Albuquerque in 2017 and attending the International Balloon Festival. We’ve been buying it from a seller there ever since.

We had an international one every September in our little Welsh town of Llangollen nestled in the Dee Valley. It was colourful and glorious. One landed at the top of our lane (for some reason) in the even smaller village of Glyndyfrdwy as I was arriving home. So I quickly drove down, prepared a cup of tea, and we walked back up to watch them reinflate , then drift upwards and out of sight. A memory of simpler peaceful times I wish we had back….

A close relative lives in ABQ and frequently has hot air balloons floating overhead her house. Often they’re not that high and she’s shared verbal salutations with a few pilots.
There’s an arroyo directly behind her property and infrequently a pilot will put down there since it’s accessible by a pickup truck.
The current year festival is underway and she’s already sent photos of this mornings “mass ascension” from the huge field in Albuquerque that the city built for the annual event. She lives on a high area from which she can see the balloons as they lift up from the Event field.

Of course, as with Guy Fawkes night on November 5 in Blighty and the firecrackers, not all found the balloon weekend there enjoyable.
My sister in law was one. The sounds of the balloons as they would sail over her riding establishment as they fired up spooked the horses terribly. Once, one of hers bolted, and it took them forever to get it back.
I don’t have to imagine your relative’s excitement with the festival. I’ve seen many, and it really is an experience of tremendous enjoyment.
Yes, in the stillness of a rural area, the sudden roar of the gas flame can be quite startling if unexpected. However, when my lady relative is sitting quietly while reading, that sound alerts her to get up and grab her camera….
More than a few times she has dashed out back and looked up only to be surprised by how CLOSE the balloon was – drifting by and not very high at all…

I’ve experienced the exact same!!! A window on the second floor of our shop looked out a cross the various chimneyed houses. Wed put Tue day’s taking in vs in the kitchen in a cupboard I had to bend down to open.
When I entered that kitchen the view was clear. I bent for maybe five seconds, and when I returned to the upright position, the whole window was filled with one of those massive beautiful balloons!

Did you ever learn the Welsh language Betts? It’s very strange and difficult. Amazing to believe they’ve kept their culture in the midst of the English overlords.
Certain words and phrases…but not to speak it conversationally. I had a Welsh non Welsh speaking friend who decided she needed to learn. Bless her, she tried😂! Gave up in the end about 6 weeks later. It is definitely one of the hardest to learn and also to speak.
I used to have certain Welsh people come into our little upmarket gift shop and ask in Welsh if I spoke it. Clearly upset that an American lived in their country. Thankfully I lived in North Wales where that sort of rabid nationalism wasn’t prevalent.
But I understood what they were asking and why…
So I would give them my biggest Southern smile (while I was eyeballing them) and say simply…
“No, but I speak exceptionally good English, if that’s of any use to you”

Monticello – not sure if you can find it – but Trader Joe’s had an excellent brand of INSTANT coffee that 100% Columbian. I love my coffee – but this particular brand is as stout as a Guinness beer and I can only drink it with milk. But, it is the most excellent version of a latte, and it is delicious.
Agree with the review of Bustelo – like it a lot.
Trader Joe’s has good Breakfast Blend or French Roast, as well. Fairly reasonable.

You are all aware how music often marks times, feelings, and emotions from moments in our lives. Red Rubber Ball is one of those songs for me. It came out just when my own mother had gone to Court to relinquish her custody of my brother and I. At age 10, I was uprooted from my life and sent to live with my alcoholic father who was living with his mother. My grandmother was well-to-do and had recently finished building a custom home in a very nice new neighborhood in an upper middle class neighborhood in Lafayette, CA. She had remarried after the death of my biological grandfather and she had sold the two lots they had bought to build a home on the Orinda Country Club golf course. Her home in Lafayette was > 1 acre and had a creek running the length of their rear yard. It was really “in the country” for a suburban lot. It was a beautiful home.
As a confused, uprooted, and essentially REJECTED ex-child of my mother … I sought refuge in music of the time which was exploding on the radio. My grandmother was a very prim, proper, strict, no-nonsense woman. And she barely tolerated that awful rock and roll music. She literally banished me to her beautiful two-car garage (you could eat off the floor of her garage) to listen to my music. My father had just bought a beautiful NEW transistor radio for my birthday in 1966 … a Panasonic so small you could fit it into your shirt pocket! A big deal at the time. So I spent hours in her garage listening to AM radio in grandma’s garage. One of the HOT songs at that time was Red Rubber Ball (the Cyrcikes version) . Whenever I hear that song … I remember my grandmothers garage … my transistor radio … and my confused mind trying to work out what I had done wrong to be REJECTED by my mother. The answer was … nothing. My brother and I were really good kids who did well in school and were very sociable. Turns out my mother’s older new husband didn’t want us around anymore … he was FINISHED raising children. So my weak minded mother … sorry … that’s the most charitable way I can describe a woman who tosses her own kids … for an aging older boyfriend. Oh well. As it turned out … my grandmother cared MORE about my brother and my welfare than any other adult in our lives. It was the very best thing for us to be “banished” to mean grandma’s house … she was uptight and repressed on the outside … but was full of love and commitment on the inside. She certainly cared more for my brother and I than our own dysfunctional parents. She is really the singular reason I have made it through life (thus far) successfully. Yes, God provides for us … even when it seems we’re getting screwed.
So … when I hear Red Rubber Ball … a happy sounding bouncy tune about love and rejection … THAT … is what comes rushing from my memory banks. But the memory is warm and happy … even humorous … that grandma MADE me listen to Rock music in the garage. No matter … my really cool next door neighbor and I played tennis racket guitars in his living room to the brand new Beatles album Revolver. His mom was cool … not uptight 😎. We didn’t know quite what to make of that Indian music at the time (now, I love it).

My older brother did come out very well. He was my rock and strength. We always had each other … and many times that’s ALL we had. After another failed marriage and divorce, we ended up living alone with our father in a fleabag apartment … if such a thing exists in an upper middle class community (it did … I assure you). My brother and I both got paper routes (remember those?) so we would have enough money for food and clothing. Yeah … not what a 13 yo should be doing with his wages.
My brother fled our dreadful “home life” with our father when he graduated from HS … I had bailed out a year earlier when I was starting my sophomore year in HS … yeah … things got REALLY ROUGH after we left grandma’s house. My brother became an auto mechanic … and he was a really good one. He bought his first house when he was 23 years old. You can imagine what it felt like for one of two boys bounced around … like a Red Rubber Ball … to buy his own home! It was his own personal show of defiance that we would NEVER be victims of our circumstances.
Sadly, my brother died of a rare lymph cancer at age 27. The single most devastating moment in my life. But years past … I have nothing but happy memories and massive respect for my older brother … who always looked out for his little brother. I named my first son after him.
Ha! Memory cocktail. Perhaps I had one too many cocktails last night … 😝
I know the song. it is a happy one for me, too. the grandmothers that I know are often the only source of love for the child let loose like a kite. we thank God for them and their saving grace.
Sadly my situation was far from unique. My elementary school teacher wife just completed her parent/teacher conferences … and several of them out of a class of 30 were with the grandmothers. Yes, bless them for taking on that challenge in their golden years … when they should only be spoiling the little tykes … like I am doing with my grandkids … not raising them.

I remember that radio! It was referred to as “The All America Five!” It was a 5 transistor radio that was a small hand held radio that would fit in your pocket! Panasonic and Zenith as well as RCA made them! Quite popular amongst the teenie boppers! To receive stations you had to orient yourself in the correct direction to the station you were listening to. Wish I had an operational one today!
Really … thankfully there were a couple of local Bay Area AM radio stations with huge transmitters. And I learned how to set the tiny radio and its 1-1/2” dia. speaker in a small cubby of boxes on garage shelves to enhance its volume 😝 … my first foray into audiophile “tweaks” 😜
God bless your grandmother — a tad stilted– but still loving as she provided you and your brother with a home. So glad things worked out for you. 👍
We had gone from a life with virtually no rules or structure … mom and her older husband couldn’t be bothered … to grandma’s STRICT rules and regulations … that were honestly over the top. You can imagine what that was like for a 10yo boy? Her own really COOL 😎 older sister would come to visit and tell grandma to BACK OFF … and let the boys be kids. But … in hindsight … those were the singular best years of our childhood.
The desperate hurt you felt in your younger self your grandmother felt as well, my friend. I guarantee it. It sounds as if she did her best to give you as normal a life as she possibly could, so much did she love you. God bless her for that 💕
My grandmother was embarrassed by her son (my father) … she used to ask “what she had done wrong” in raising her boy so well, yet he turned out so poorly. She felt very responsible for my brother and I. She was a true blessing when we truly needed a blessing …

But … alas one with another story. When I was in 8th grade in 1970 my English teacher was Mrs. Yamaguchi, a middle age woman who tried to be hip to the counterculture of the times. We all called her Yama-mamma … was that racist? or just what middle school boys do? She absolutely adored Simon and Garfunkel and considered Paul Simon a great poet and social commentator. The lp Bridge over Troubled Water (story of my life) had just come out and she was over the moon for that lp.
One of the assignments she gave us (who remembers 8th grade English paper assignments?) was to break down and analyze the meaning of the song The Boxer. Good Lord … the song was written about ME !! … and the life I had to fight my way through. She gave me an A+ on my paper and was blown away that an otherwise irreverent 8th grade boy could describe EXACTLY what Simon meant when he said The Boxer “carried the reminder of every glove that had ever laid him down or cut him”. She had no idea that I was just a poor boy who had left my home and my family (involuntarily). After I wrote that paper … her attitude toward me was forever changed … my story hit her hard. And I respected her for that sympathetic and supportive reaction.

It took me 4-days to hitchhike from Saginaw … Simon sings plaintively. As a poor kid growing up with essentially no family … I hitchhiked everywhere. In fact I hitchhiked home from HS my entire Sophomore year (I got a ride TO school in the morning). But that’s an entirely different story, that my morning coffee won’t lubricate quite like two scotches do in the evening.

I LOVE that movie and James Garner was always swoon-worthy. My goodness!
I kind of think I’m a little cross between “Hope Floats” and “While You Were Sleeping” with Sandra Bullock. Sandra’s cuter though.
I really appreciated Garrison’s post about his new normal and the challenges of being widowed at close to 80 years old. The silence he is becoming accustomed to is my constant companion – or rather the sounds in my home are ones of an ADHD tornado that would strike and wreak havoc from one end of the home to the other. I was/am constantly cleaning and just as I “finish”… I am back to the beginning with the next touch down. Even now, I will go into my garage in the earliest hours of the morning to pray and be alone.
Was it John Wesley’s mom, Susanna, who would sit in the middle of the kitchen and put her apron over her head to escape into prayer as her numerous children swirled around her? Yes, this is me. Between my daughter and my work, there was never a free moment. There are still very few and usually due to sleeplessness. I’ve learned to love those waking hours.
My heart was broken with Kenji’s story of his mother who valued a boyfriend more than her own children. I simply could never, ever, ever reconcile with those notions. I did have moments of weakness during times of dire straights where I wondered if she would have been better off adopted to a two parent family who had extended family.
I had to open my home to an acquaintance of mine who was a single mother and she left her three children at home in the middle of the night to have sex with a boyfriend. He proceeded to try to strangle her and shattered a back patio door with the struggle. I promptly collected her children and her and brought them to my home to be safe and there was no talking to her to change her ways. Another single mom left her two young girls at home alone and ended up on my doorstep threatening to stab herself with a screwdriver. She was mentally ill and a beautiful, beautiful, abused and abandoned young woman. I thought she might even stab me. Did I mention these were church-going women? Wow – the singles groups were awful in my opinion.
My own mother left me at home in the middle of the night at 9 years old to feed her cigarette addiction, which she was quite literally killing me with. I was terribly sick as a child with very feeble lungs. She was hit and killed by a car and I fielded the hospital calls alone. Was dragged to the hospital, forced into the ICU by my father who NO ONE would say no to, and then faced my dying mother’s body alone in the arms of a nurse – not a family member. My mother put me in the worst circumstances and she was a cautionary tale of what NOT to do while raising a child.
I think what I miss the most is the quiet in the middle of the night when you could whisper to your mate about the happenings of the day. I never had anyone I could whisper “Did you see Savannah do such and such today? Oh wow!” or “Do you think it’s a good idea to…” or “Oh my God! Did she really sit on the 14th century setee at the Museum of Art and set off all the alarms?” and of course, I simply couldn’t be there for everything. I really missed the good pillow giggles and I have needed help carrying all the memories around. They keep falling out of my mind.
On one hand, I never had to ask for permission for anything, but on another there was no one to ever give it, so the errors were all mine.
My only prayer – my ONLY one – is that I will live long enough to see my daughter in a good and loving marriage where her husband loves The Lord first and then her. I pray he has a wonderful family to envelope her and give her the siblings she’s always deserved and in-laws who will cherish her.
I would give everything in the world up, even the blessing of seeing my grandkids, if I only could have that one and only wish. She is so incredibly worthy.
I pray there is something left of our America that they may be able to have a peaceful home, healthy and loving marriage, safety and good health for their children.
My dad who died when she was 14 months old – said to me the kindest thing ever when I phoned him that I was an unwed mother at 32 years old. “Joanie, God finally gave you someone to love.” He was not an overtly religious man and his harsh words far outweighed the kindnesses to everyone, but when he came through for me which was few and far between… he really did hit it out of the ballpark. He and my mom would have adored her, God rest their souls.
Moms love their children with ferocity – or at least they should. There is something primal in wanting to protect them from harm. That’s why I knew we had passed a point of no return when evil entered their schools and sought to separate them from us, morality, and faith in God. There is no excuse to hurt children. None.
I know our God intimately. It is He Who I spoke to in those dark and lonely times. He gave me an understanding of His faithfulness and Divine provision. He taught me how to be the mom my kiddo needed and she teaches me how to never give up.
We are in a good place, her and I. When you’ve walked through fire – you are more reticent at not getting burned. My next beau – if he exists – will likely have to walk on water because the romeos of the movies are few and far between.
Why do I even share all this? It’s because with our goodness, our commitment to a Just and Holy God, and every fiber of our being… we have a responsibility to stand. Stand firm and upright and take no bullcrap from anybody. The Lord says that at His Word the devil must flee. We have to practice this and use it liberally and frequently. Else, how will our world know what His Word says?
We need to live our lives in such a way that we prove good stewards and examples to our children. I don’t have this all worked out and I’m far from perfect with it – but effective risk assessment is a start. Don’t believe what people say, watch what they do, or watch what they don’t say. Sometimes silence is as bad as a lie.
Now, I am being yanked from this computer to join “reality” and do more chores. They never end. Thanks for listening to the ramblings of a lonely, getting older, woman.

Chains are fascinating. A simple technology, the joining of separate links is used to make everything from fine jewelry to lifting and pulling devices, to DNA, watches, fences, and the internal workings of most engines. Link chains are everywhere! They are also in your spiritual life.
Your spirit comes with a linking device, as you have no doubt noticed. Today, your body and spirit are temporarily linked until the time you pass through death and await the resurrection, at which time they will become permanently linked ready to enjoy a restored and perfect eternity.
When sin entered the picture the human spirit became capable of linking to harmful things. For example, fear was originally unknown in the garden. However, many people find that fear runs much of their lives through life experiences and erroneous teaching. Physical chains are nothing compared to spiritual ones that bind the soul.
After He ascended to heaven, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to Earth as the Comforter who relieves the human soul from the fears of failure, rejection, or the dread of loss.
God’s good news to you is that He knows your linking device needs restoring. When you invite Christ into your life, surrendering your will to Him, God begins to dismantle those chains. He unlinks your destiny from sin, coupling your soul to Christ.
Through His overcoming strength, your focus can move from the links of fear and death to the free and amazing love of God.
Pray for God’s people in positions of authority in America to be aware of the links to which they tie the nation. Ask that unhealthy would be broken, and a chain of healthy, Godly alliances will be made.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.

I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

If you didn’t break your arm … you weren’t playing hard enough. BTW … I was in Ireland last year, for a wedding, and took my grandkids to a nice playground at the beach … and OMG! the scary equipment! They had a zip line for the kids where they just had to hang on …. or fall to certain injury … and this giant spinning tilt table that was impossible not to get spun off flying through the air. So. Much. Fun.

I broke mine on a slide when I was ten. It was serpentine in shape and I just had to go up instead of down.
My younger sister decided she had to come down at the same time and pushed me over the side of it, about five feet. Awesome…
Good afternoon. All the things we did as kids put us and kept us in great shape. Thankfully, I’ve not broken anything even though I was a tree climber to the very top of our 3 story tall pepper tree. To graduate kindergarten we had to be able to climb the fireman’s pole and ring the bell. The pole was in the center of our class so we could practice on rainy days. I had to wear shorts under my dresses so I could hang upside in the bars. Seems all our playtime as kids involved risky behavior but we had good balance, no fear of heights, and really no fear of getting hurt. Dare devils we were.
Afternoon back, deb🤗 Good grief!!! Kindergarten?? Whoa!! More like ROTC I’d say 😂.

Some fundamental truths about war and conflicts as I see them>
In fact, war can solve it. Or at least in this case the primary threat to Israel from the inside.
History indicates that usually in any dispute that comes to war there has to be a clear winner that takes all or the war/conflict will be continued.
Another fact is that the longer a war lasts the higher the cost in treasure, be it human or otherwise.
Bottom line is shorter is better as long as there is a clear winner that takes all.
No matter which side one thinks is righteous does not change these facts.
Another fact. Appeasement does not work and that is exactly what this current administration has been practicing when it comes to Islamic terrorism.
For all the handwringers in the press just beside themselves that 1.2 million people have been given only one day notice to vacate northern Gaza (basicaly Gaza City) and remove themselves south of Wadi Gaza, it should be noted that from Gaza City to Wadi Gaza is just a little over 5 miles. Throw some things in a back pack and walk there for crying out loud. When I was a kid I used to walk further than that to school and then back again in the afternoon each day, up hill both ways. And it’s not even raining or snowing there. If you are still in Gaza City on Saturday, you’re screwed.

Note: I personally don’t like the “long and hard”. It’s negativity. I also think Israel is too much caring about US political support. Yes it’s needed but the Defense Establishment should focus on the operations. There will be Investigations and people will lose their jobs all the way up. But now we have to work with who we have.

-Over 600,000 Gazans are evacuated from North Gaza the zone that is designated for the initial land invasion of the IDF.
-Israeli Shabak (Internal Intelligence) alerts jews and Israelis across the globe to avoid the areas of pro Palestinian protests across the globe and alerting to guard Israeli embassies and Jewish locations. Note the declared a Day of Jihad and Rage globally including the US. This may be in your own areas so pay attention.
-5 direct hits on Shderot city in the south. No known injuries. Most of them moved out of the area already.
-Jordanian forces use tear gas on rioters in the East border of Israel. Organized rage at the border.

-I have to say that my family in Haifa (mixed arab Jew city) are afraid to go out. Telling me there is a lot of distress many elderly who are hopeless. They are trying to help them with open phone lines and other means.

I think the attempt is to Egypt. But Hamas is ideologically a wing of the Muslim Brotherhood which is illegal in Egypt.
Biden may pay Egypt to take them.
Arabs know to be carful of Palestinians. Publicly they support them. But Jordan killed thousands of them. Egypt closed their tunnels in Gaza. Lebanon was ruined because of them.
David how will IDF know who is Hamas and who is not? Couldnt Hamas hide in plain sight in Gaza, blending in with Palestinian residents in the north, or following those that fled to the south?
Good question. The people in the North of Gaza were told to evacuate. It’s the border area from which Israel is going to enter.
We already know that there are Hamas people amongst the refugees. Israeli intelligence is identifying some.
In the evacuated zones everyone who is still there is considered to be a terrorist. This is no joke and they know it.
It will be harder in the depth of Gaza. Unfortunately any place where there is resistance will be taken down.
Israel have more experience in urban war than anyone. We have ways to grind the roads to take out explosives. We have ways to avoid soldiers walking in the streets. Ways to move through walls of buildings. Ways to blow up tunnels.
But there will be a lot of loss as Hamas have whole buildings wired to explosives and under roads.
We also have special forces dressed and talk like them in Gaza. Looking for the kidnapped and sporting targets for assassinations. .
