In the first video there’s a complaint that people trying to bring in supplies are being refused
That’s well off the mark … it’s EVERYONE that’s being refused … there have been miles-long lines of cars lined up trying to get back into Lahaina to see if their house is still there
Police have been refusing re-entry to residents because authorities need to work thru the wreckage to find and recover corpses. To an extent, it’s a disaster recovery situation but on the other hand authorities need to treat it somewhat as a forensic scene.
Yesterday, police let returning residents in for a while but halted traffic entry within about a half hour because entrants were parking along the high road in back of town and walking downhill into the housing subdivisions to check on their houses. Police had barricaded entry on side roads but residents climbed over or drove around the barriers, contravening police intent and control. Police and other officials trying to assess fatalities had to break away from their work to escort the entrants back out.
Later in the first video they float a conspiracy about a land grab and point to a plan on the books for a hundreds-acre housing development.
Well, you don’t need to burn out the existing town for your new development, there are hundreds or thousands of acres of land just uphill from existing development. These are remnant plantation-era fields that used to be in pineapple and sugarcane for about a century and that were removed from cultivation in the 80s or so.
Just get on Google Earth or Google Maps and switch to satellite view and you’ll see. Ten to fifteen years ago they built a “bypass” road in back of town (uphill from existing residential development). Uphill from that are the former agricultural fields and further uphill is forest.
The second video is mainly complaints and conspiracy theory about some unknown hands that — lemme get this straight — burned out a main hub of economy and residence, so “they” can take it over?
Again, you don’t need to burn folks out, there’s plenty of land uphill.
And he leads off with a misunderstanding about “how did a hurricane miss the Big Island, didn’t flood it, no rain …. but caused fires “in the most precious parts of real estate”
The hurricane didn’t hit the Big Island and it didn’t hit Maui either … it passed 500 miles south of the Hawaiian Islands
The winds that stoked the fires were strong, gusty trade winds (easterlies) on the lower limb of a huge high-pressure system. This is our fair-weather pattern … high pressure, clear skies, blue and sunny. We have strong, gusty tradewinds like that several times a year, peak season is usually March, with a secondary peak in August.
The winds were intensified by a strong pressure gradient between the high and the low (the down-south hurricane as it passed). Envision 2 gears, a top gear spinning clockwise and a lower gear spinning counter clockwise. Where the gears’ teeth mesh is where the pressure gradient was strongest between the two pressure systems and driving winds east to west. Reports were gusts up to 50 to 80 knots.
Again, we have bouts of strong, high-pressure easterlies every year — in this case, intensified by the hurricane passing to the south. But you don’t need to have “climate change” to get that. We also get about 10 hurricanes passing each year in hurricane season (June-October, roughly).
Now what’s really the problem are those former agricultural fields. They’re now unmanaged grasslands and in the dry season the grass dries out and will burn fast and uncontrollably if torched and it’s windy out. And you don’t need to get side-tracked whether it’s “invasive” grass or not, that’s just another environmentalist talking point to go down. When you stop harvesting sugarcane, the land will be taken over by grasses, whatever’s lying about, perhaps even leftover sugarcane growing wild.
So the nature of the grasslands depends on how the former plantations left them on their way out of business. Did they let sugarcane grow wild? Did they plant a replacement grass? I don’t know the details of that but someone does.
Now as a land-management principle, maybe there’s a less flammable ground cover you could leave behind. Succulents like California’s ice plants? Some sort of cactus like agave? Aloe?
Another option would be to cultivate biomass for energy conversion, a tall hardy grass that you harvest and send to the former sugar mill to burn in boilers to generate electricity.
I’m sure that was considered and found uneconomical, but that economic analysis probably didn’t give adequate weight to fire hazard, which we’re now finding out is about a $20+ billion dollar loss, not to mention loss of life in the hundreds.
So it was a bad, bad, bad land-management situation with highly flammable fields upwind from intensive suburban development. Combine high winds and an arson bug and it’s game over. Notably, as I looked at still photos it appeared to me that most of the burnt land was downhill from that upper bypass road. That road would have been a good access for an arsonist to set fire to the fields just uphill and winds would carry fire across that highway and down into the residential area.
Or, maybe the winds brought down power lines and that sparked off the fires. Dunno.
Finally – the sirens that didn’t bark. There’ll be an investigation, but the main question to me is whether the sirens were activated and failed or whether no one activated them.
Now, in our multi-media new world, the Civil Defense agencies have begun programs of phone alerts the past couple years and you’ll read in articles about the county’s “facebook page” yada yada.
Phone alerts and facebook pages are maybe a bit too cool for school, ultimately — what if you’re not on facebook and what if you don’t get the phone alerts because cellular coverage is out?
But I guaran-damn-tee ya you’ll jump out of your recliner chair when the air-raid sirens go off, especially if there’s one just down the street.
So why didn’t they?
Well — who triggers them and where were they?
Is there a Civil Defense guy for the west side who’s capable of activating them when he’s seeing a big orange glow?
Or is activation from the headquarters over the mountain in Kahului-Wailuku were the headquarters office is?
In that case, does activation depend on them getting a phone call?
“Hey, we’ve got big fires over here in Lahaina, you guys better set off our Civil Defense sirens”
Dunno … but like I said, there’ll be an investigation

The Mann Gulch fire in Montana is a striking example. Twelve smoke jumpers died in that fire and one fire guard. Only three men escaped.

Yesterday was the auction of Phillis’s estate. She was a great lady and we’ll miss her but I picked up some things to remember her by.
The house was auctioned first. It went for $196,000 to a young couple with two little girls. A year ago before inflation and raising interest rates it would have gone for more I’m sure. I figured it would go for $200,000 to $225,000. That house has an acre going with it and a lot of trees that need trimmed. There is at least $4,000 in tree trimming work needed and an acre to maintain. Too much for most older people.
But anyway I am quite thankful that it appears we’re going to have good neighbors. Looking forward to playing with the little girls and we have some stuff up in the attic that I think they’ll really enjoy.
Then came the car. 2002 Malibu grandmas car with only 52,000 miles on it. I bid on it for a friend of my Granddaughters and went up to $3,100 on it. It went for $4,100 plus the 10% buyers premium. I couldn’t believe it!
Then came all the little stuff laid out on tables. I got Sherry two lawn ornaments she wanted and myself an old fashioned 5 gallon gas can that doesn’t have that BS controlled pour spout like this new junk their selling now. So next was the furniture. I had my orders from Sherry and got everything she wanted. A heavy solid wood desk in perfect condition. An oak wheeled serving cart with wings, under tray and drawer that goes perfecting in our oak trimmed and floored dinning room. And though Sherry didn’t say she wanted it, I got her a nice lighted vanity with chair and she was happy I got it. All that furniture all without a mark or mar on it, I got for $175.00! And that includes the 10% buyers premium.
I already have all the stuff in our house except the desk. It’s heavy and will take a pickup truck to move it. But Steve has the key to the place and we’ll go get it at our convenience. It is 45 days until closing so I have plenty of time.

estate sales /(auction) are bittersweet. I like to pick up things as well, and have memories and even give respect to the history of said item.
Since Jason, her husband, just started a new Job with the VA he is required to stay at that job in TN for a year before he can transfer. Otherwise he can never work for the VA again. I could have bought it for cash money but then putting on the planned additions and remodeling of our house would have made things very tight for us.
I didn’t want to rent it and both of my kids lives are in so much flux there is not guarantee that either one would have moved into it.
Coincidentally just now, Chris made the comment that there is something terribly sad about estate sales. Independent of my having read your comment, he said it’s as if one is getting rid of the person whose possessions are being sold. All trace of who they were or that they were gone.
I am glad you and Sherry have managed to secure some of this dear lady’s treasures. I know you both will see and remember her every time you look at them. God rest her soul🙏🏻

Here at my Indiana home yesterday saw a low cloud passing north of us that looked threatening. Obvious slow rotation, but apparently nothing came of it. To the north of us is Anderson, IN. It was named after Chief Anderson who selected that location for his tribe there partly because he said it was unlikely to be hit by tornadoes.

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Certainly a tiny emphasis on Gods children here this morning, and may our God bless and protect them. Regrettably, and probably sadly, I’ve never been drawn to “babies” (of course my own was different, but…). I prefer them at the walking talking stage – lol. Then sometimes I feel pity that they will (mostly) end up buried by the darkness that suffocates us all, the world of lie and pain. Which I feel they and we are headed – much deeper – IF we don’t “parent up” and do the right thing, starting with fixing ourselves. Here and now, while we are alive, is our only chance – and what I strongly believe is THE chance. May it be His will. Of course, many here are already well on the right track – may your light be a beacon for other to follow.
