When I retired as a public library manager and early literacy specialist 8 years ago, storytime were considered early literacy activities, and staff who presented them were trained to interact with parents and children to help parents actively engage in preliteracy skills, not just during storytimes but also at home.
We would share books; not just reading them but talking about the words and pictures, predicting what might happen next, repeating catchy phrases as a group.
We shared children’s songs and nursery rhymes, did counting activities, and overall engaged in 30 or more minutes of interactive learning activities.
While we encouraged pretend and make believe as learning tools, “pretend time” was clearly defined. How Drag Queens and acceptance of cross dressing crept into storytimes totally escapes me!
