We peeped into one which was moored in Nantwich one Sunday morning, thinking it was only a tour one.

It was someone’s home, and there sat the resident in his robe and pajamas reading his paper, drinking a cup of something….we beat a hasty retreat (don’t think he saw us).
But I remember imagining living on one…as close to pure freedoms as one could get (no taxes for a start😎).
For anyone interested in Canals and how they helped the Industrial Revolution, I recommend
searching for ‘ James Brindley Canal builder and engineer’. He was a remarkable man, one of the those
natural geniuses. He changed the face of Britain in the 18th C. Now those wonderful canals are used for leisure and where once the narrow boats fed the ‘dark satanic mills’ with coal and blackened the face of the industrial cities. But Britain grew rich and powerful because of the industry. I agree with Betsy, I think it would be a great way to live. (You can rent them too for a vacation)

Watching that was quite a pleasure. I had to turn on the Closed Caption feature, my “ears” not quite tuned to the delightful accents of the couple. I enjoyed the few minutes with the old beekeeper in Charlotte.
Having owned four RV’s (two travel trailers, a 1959 wooden cabin cruiser, and a 1977 sloop) since being marrIed, I can readily understand most of the logistics involved in owning and operating a canal boat in that environment. It’s a hybrid of an RV and a wooden boat.
The couple’s lifestyle seems very low-key / low stress. But when an inboard engine fails or a wooden hull suffers damage or starts leaking from seams, everything else becomes secondary to getting the problem repaired. Not a lifestyle for the faint of heart.

The CIA fact book is a reference I first learned about and used when I was an SF solider. It is a fantastic reference and I would suggest that if you have any questions about geography or demographics or a myriad of other subjects, you look there as your first source.

BTW, OSS detachment 101 was working with the Kachin tribes in Burma behind enemy lines to get the Japanese out. They were very effective at helping the Allied campaigns, by gathering intelligence and interdicting Japanese LOCs. The Kachin’s were the indigenous people of Burma driven into the mountains, a nearly perfect parallel to the Montagnards of Vietnam that the US SF recruited and worked with in Vietnam. To this day many Kachin tribes do not accept the authority of the Myanmar government!
One must always remember that as far as the allies were concerned the primary objective was to defeat the Japanese. Japan had the vast majority of their troops fighting in China.
In SE Asia the OSS worked very effectively with Ho Chi Minh against the Japanese. Ho was pro American until the US backed France’s fight to reacquire their SE Asian colony. After the war the US had plenty of excess weapons, including aircraft and vehicles and France’s military was supplied by them. The French employed a number of German POWs to fight for them in Vietnam. Even many SS prisoners were given the option of either serve in combat in Vietnam for the French or rot the rest of their lives in French prisons.
I liked her because she was sensible and for using lots of butter in her cooking when it was politically incorrect and they were pushing Margarine (Yech!) and other horrors, sayin it was better for us. What rubbish!

I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

My Bluebirds brood #2 fledged the other day. Hopefully I will get a brood #3 in a few weeks. The summer Doldrums are here so very little bird activity.
Plenty at my feeders. Yesterday a red tail hawk stopped by looking for dinner. He was in the big Chinese Elm in my front yard checking out the birds at the feeders. Five Blue Jays in the top of the dead spruce that my 8 lb. feeder hangs on were raising hell, letting everybody know that the hawk was there.
Then the jays, working together, chased that hawk off. They chased him until I lost sight of them in the distance.
Great photo, Colkitto! Nothing like a healthy dose of mealworms…mmmm.
Same with the dolrums here. We have 3 or 4 adolescent carolina chickadees visiting our feeders, sparrows, doves, cardinals, and a titmouse on ocassion.
Our area is being menaced by Mississippi kites right now. I think the songbirds are laying low and being cautious.
Kites are amazing birds. I like them better when they are hunting Insects.
Nice observations. I had a pair of Carolina Chickadees successfully nest in my Bluebird Box a few years ago. I hyst placed a hanging Chickadee box but I put it up to late for it to be used for this year. hopefully next year I will get both species. Cheers
I love bluebirds like in your picture. Wish we had them here in the Mojave. I’m on the Western edge of the desert so we do occasionally see blue jays.

Highlights from the 1 million dollar race last night at Eldora.
Logan Schuchart won the million. Leading from start to finish. Great story. It is a family team.
Bad crash involving 5 cars, three of them real contenders, but nobody hurt. But it was a very close call for Kyle Larson in 57. Kyle is a very successful young driver, so successful they call him “young money”!
Ernest Hemingway once said that ““There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”
The next two nights there is more racing of the same cars at Eldora. Culminating in the “Kings Royal” Saturday night. Over 2 million in purses in 4 days of racing. And BTW the 50/50 drawing payoff last night was over $100,000 so it wasn’t only some drivers that walked away from that track with a lot of money.

Good afternoon, pals.
Had an interesting little ditty happen to me this morning. Went into my office to process the mail and check deposit. Usually a check deposit takes me all of 20 minutes in the two systems I have to post them in, plus running them through the bank check scanner.
However, this mail batch included SEVEN lost payments from April and May. But, here’s the kicker – two clients – I received BOTH the original check issued in April or May AND the replacement checks issued in July – on the same day. Now how in the h-e-double hockey sticks did THAT happen???
Incidentally, two of the payments were from some VERY high profile clients. VERY high profile and very wealthy.
So, how does that happen? Did the missing mail from April and May get lost when they were scanning the letters with their B.S. “we will tell you what’s in your mail before you get your mail” that we DID NOT sign up for? And how would they have just been held aside until their replacement checks issue in July caught up to them?
Well, I couldn’t just cash the old checks because some may have had stop payments issued on them. So spent the morning tracking all the payers down and telling them what happend, which… sure enough.. some of the checks did have stop payments issued. Still awaiting word back on two clients.
What takes me 20 minutes – took me over 3 hours today and it is still not done.
Incidentally, two separate occasions yesterday;
one at dinner (the server tried to overcharge me $16 for the two of us on our $60 bill – only revealed after I asked for the itemized receipt) I am a known patron at this particular restaurant and this was a new server, unknown to me.
and the other from the clerk at a store who gave me the wrong cash change back and he full on looked at the screen and the receipt and still shorted me.
Folks – as much as we talk about throwing sand in the machine – be clear that it is reciprocal.
We have to watch, watch, watch – all of our transactions – always.
I want to believe (pie in the sky) that none of these instances were “on purpose”… but SEVEN of our client payments? And what sort of VEGAS odds is it to receive both the original check and the replacement check – on the same day???
If I would have just proceeded with my company’s check deposit – imagine the mess when those checks bounced back unpaid.
Then I got the City of Carmel newsletter which I posted about in the Presidential thread and sent Sundance a copy of – because the corresponding photos of the Carmel Mayor nuzzling up to Chy-na was just too precious!
Rolling my eyes – and heaping a heavy SIGH.
Taking kid to the drive-in tonight. Double feature of Mission Impossible and Transformers. We may just get in the car – and keep driving – to that Huckleberry Finn raft and sail away. (Frankly, my first impression was of a Haitian immigrant raft.) When are we going to start with emigration? Where we goin’?

I seriously doubt that it’s true. Most Likely a malicious rumor to scare people away from seeing the movie. AMC owners would not endanger their assets by exposing themselves to lawsuits from customers who get sick from consuming food or beverages served in their theaters. After all, AMC does not enjoy immunity from lawsuits as do the Big Pharma corporations who make the quackcines.
