Close the Gate (For Dad)

For this farmer the worries are over, lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been struggles enough, put the tractor in the shed.
 
Years were not easy, many downright hard, but your faith in God transcended,
Put away your tools and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended.
 
You raised a fine family, worked the land well and always followed the Son,
Hang up your shovel inside barn; your work on earth is done.
 
A faith few possess led your journey through life, often a jagged and stony way,
The sun is setting, the cattle are bedded, and now is the end of your day.
 
Your love of God’s soil passed on to your kin; the stories flow like fine wine,
Wash off your boots in the puddle left by His rain one final time.
 
You always believed that the good Lord would provide and He always has somehow,
Take off your gloves and put them down, no more sweat and worry for you now.
 
Your labor is done, your home is now heaven; no more must you wait,
Your legacy lives on, land and the Lord, and, Dad, we’ll close the gate.

Sundance, I’ve never used this thread before, so I hope it is right for this question. Has there been any confirmation of what was in “the envelopes” at the funeral for GHWB?

Good news and bad news on the weather front. NHC has issued it’s last report on Bret. It had died in the Caribbean just as Joe said it would.

Cindy will weaken and then is likely to start to redevelop in 4 – 5 days going north hooking of with the trough off the east coast of the US. It will threaten Bermuda and then as it starts to strengthen it goes up towards the Canadian Maritimes according to current track forecasts.

Good probability of TS development in the Pacific off the Mexican coast. Joe is concerned about development in the Gulf in 10-20 days.

Texas! The models have changed! After this week relief comes. Rains and much cooler weather! And when the heat dome over Texas dissipates so does the pattern that is causing the violent weather! However, that pattern will also be more conducive for TS or hurricanes to make landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast. Joe said that pattern is not unlike that which was present when Harvey, a CAT IV hit up at the Texas/Louisiana border.

And speaking of violent weather. This afternoon into tonight, enhanced probability of violent weather in my neck of the woods. I could feel it building yesterday and this morning it was warm and humid even at 02:30 when I took the dogs out. Band of enhanced probability runs from Arkansas and Norhtern Mississippi, up through most of Tennessee, central Kentucky and then takes in the eastern half of Indiana and most the western half of Ohio. Good chance for widespread outbreaks today. Don’t want the violent weather but any rain would be welcome here now.

Let’s put it this way. I’m going to take my 5 x 8 Colors and 3 x 5 Gadsden flag down and just fly my 3×5 storm colors today.

The Greeks of Athens loved to discuss different philosophies and did so daily. They invited Paul to speak with them to explain the “strange things” he was presenting in the town square, so he stood before them on Mars Hill. It was said that Athens had more gods than men, so Paul’s initial approach was to address their altar “To the unknown god” (Acts 17:23). 

First, he said they needed to recognize that God exists, then recognize who He is, and finally recognize what He said. The apostle explained that the true God was Creator of all things. “In Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). The Greeks accepted that, but what Paul said next was offensive to some of them. God commands all people to repent, for He has fixed a day in the future when the Man appointed to do so would come in righteousness to judge. God had raised Him from the dead to give assurance of His coming (vv. 30-31).  

Saving knowledge comes in God’s special revelation. While Paul did not call Jesus by name in his message, there is no salvation apart from Christ (Acts 4:12), and some who heard him came to believe. Once Jesus came to Earth and the gospel has been preached, all people must repent, and turn to Him.

Missionaries are sent around the world to preach the Gospel. Yet the mission field is wide open here in the United States. Stand tall, believer, and share the message of salvation through Christ Jesus with others. Then pray that your hearers will respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and accept this saving knowledge.

RECEIVING ONE’S SELF IN THE FIRES OF SORROW
 
“What shall I say? Father, save me, from this hour? But for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify Thy name.” John xii. 27-29, R. V.
 
My attitude as a saint to sorrow and difficulty is not to ask that they may be prevented, but to ask that I may preserve the self God created me to be through every fire of sorrow. Our Lord received Himself in the fire of sorrow, He was saved not FROM the hour, but OUT OF the hour.
 
We say that there ought to be no sorrow, but there IS sorrow, and we have to receive ourselves in its fires. If we try and evade sorrow, refuse to lay our account with it, we are foolish. Sorrow is one of the biggest facts in life; it is no use saying sorrow ought not to be. Sin and sorrow and suffering ARE, and it is not for us to say that God has made a mistake in allowing them.
 
Sorrow burns up a great amount of shallowness, but it does not always make a man better. Suffering either gives me my self or it destroys my self. You cannot receive your self in success, you lose your head; you cannot receive your self in monotony, you grouse. The way to find your self is in the fires of sorrow. Why it should be so is another matter, but that it is so is true in the Scriptures and in human experience. You always know the man who has been through the fires of sorrow and received himself, you are certain you can go to him in trouble and find that he has ample leisure for you. If a man has not been through the fires of sorrow, he is apt to be contemptuous, he has no time for you. If you receive yourself in the fires of sorrow, God will make you nourishment for other people.

God morning, everyone.

I woke early this morning and we have a rumbling storm outside that I am hoping will pick up some steam and linger for a little while. We need the rain so bad.

I am watering my patio plants twice a day to sustain them. They are so big and beautiful. Looking forward to my Peace Rose’s first bloom. When I was a child, my father had 22 rose bushes in our backyard – so roses are special to me.

Tomatoes on the vine and it will be fun to see what kind of Frankenstein monsters those turn out to be.

We have the blessing of two Canadian Geese and three of their goslings taking shelter in our shrubs. They were coming right up to my apartment patio – so I hid so they couldn’t see me through the windows of my office.

I find it a great honor when wildlife feels safe to shelter near my home. Few of the apartments here have the large leafy shrubs that I have, which is awful for bugs and I fight them with food-grade Diatomaceous Earth… but they’re great for feathered friends and the occasional neighbor cat taking cover. We are not allowed to feed them – but someday we will be back in the high life again and will be able to have our feeders.

Now, Canadian Geese are not friendly – actually they’re quite mean and a bit of a nuisance. I was once backed up against a mausoleum at my mother’s cemetery when I was feeding ducks. I was little and those mean things were honking, demanding my breadcrumbs, and looking me eye to eye and threatening to trample me before being saved by my Dad.

I didn’t especially like them after that – but my daughter when she was just a toddler – would put her chubby cherub arm in the air and exclaim “BUDDIES!!!” whenever she saw them – and they seem to love her. Everyone and everything does… she’s light wherever she goes. She’s the Rose Red to my Snow White.

I am blessed and I thank God for it. Hope God is revealing Himself in big and precious ways to you all today.

Now that is unusual. When I fill my 8 lb. squirel proof feeder I cast handfuls of the seed and nuts out into the grass around the feeder. This is for the ground feeders, like Doves, cowbirds, and red winged blackbirds, which do not use the feeder or seedblocks. But of course squirrels like it too.

Now fox squirrels and the smaller piney squirrels generally do not get along. But as I write this I have a fox squirrel and the piney on the ground feeding near each other.
