“He hath said…so that we may boldly say…” Heb. xiii. 5-6
 
My say-so is to be built on God’s say-so. God says – “I will never leave thee,” then I can with good courage say – “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear -” I will not be haunted by apprehension. This does not mean that I will not be tempted to fear, but I will remember God’s say-so. I will be full of courage, like a child “bucking himself up” to reach the standard his father wants. Faith in many a one falters when the apprehensions come, they forget the meaning of God’s say-so, forget to take a deep breath spiritually. The only way to get the dread taken out of us is to listen to God’s say-so.
 
What are you dreading? You are not a coward about it, you are going to face it, but there is a feeling of dread. When there is nothing and no one to help you, say – “But the Lord is my Helper, this second, in my present outlook.” Are you learning to say things after listening to God, or are you saying things and trying to make God’s word fit in? Get hold of the Father’s say-so, and then say with good courage – “I will not fear.” It does not matter what evil or wrong may be in the way, He has said – “I will never leave thee.”
 
Frailty is another thing that gets in between God’s say-so and ours. When we realize how feeble we are in facing difficulties, the difficulties become like giants, we become like grasshoppers, and God becomes a nonentity. Remember God’s say-so – “I WILL IN NO WISE FAIL YOU.” Have we learned to sing after hearing God’s key-note? Are we always possessed with the courage to say – “The Lord is my helper,” or are we succumbing?

Good morning all!

In past years I have usually posted multiple little essays about Overlord the week of D-Day. I have posted descriptions of various operations within Overlord and battle accounts and listed every type of landing craft used and their specs. Long ago I listed the superlatives in men, ships, aircraft, and various equipment involved in the great endeavor. The LST (Landing Ship Tank), warranted it’s own separate essay. And of course I have posted on the various Airborne operations. I have posted some personal stories of prominent heroes that carried out the invasion. I have even posted a little piece of how the word “Overlord” was selected as the code name for the operation here in the past. I have posted essays on the events and arguments on strategy which led up to the long awaited cross channel invasion. And a brief history of amphibious assaults starting with Greeks and Persians.

In this essay I will get off the beaten path so to speak and explain a vital portion of “Neptune” that I feel is neglected. Neptune was not just the Naval portion of Overlord as one might guess from the name. It encompassed almost everything that came before the Landings took place that was done to make the landings possible. As per the Operation order:

Neptune is a joint British-United State Operation, the object of which was to secure a lodgment on the Continent from which further offensive operations could be developed. It is part of a large strategic plan designed to bring about the total defeat of Germany by means of heavy and concentrated assaults upon German-occupied Europe from the United Kingdom, the Mediterranean, and Russia.

And so this essay is about the Minesweeping operations, not much written or talked about, but a vital component to the success of the invasion. Most, but not all of the information in this essay has been extracted from Craig L. Symonds excellent book Neptune: The Allied Invasion of Europe and the D-Day landings.

Admiral Bertram Ramsay, Naval Commander & Chief of the Allied expeditionary force for the invasion said in reference to D-Day “the mine is our greatest obstacle to success”. Admiral Harold Stark, Commander US Naval Forces, Europe said: “Minesweeping is one of the most vital and critical parts of our forthcoming operation”.

The Naval commanders were convinced that the waters off the shore of every prospective landing beach along Hitlers “west wall” were heavily mined. And they were, but not as heavily as feared because Hitler had ordered that a significant stock pile be held, to be deployed only after the Allies had started their invasion so as to use them where needed most.

Minesweeping was complex and dangerous work. The Allies had made great improvements to the sweeping gear and procedures since the last war, but it remained an inexact science. To make matters more complicated, the Germans were past masters at naval mining and had devised diabolical mines that made detection and sweeping far more difficult than it was for the horned sphere held in place by a chain anchored to the bottom that most picture when they think of a naval mine. No matter the type of mine, sweeping for mines meant not only detecting them but attempting to detonate them to eliminate the threat.

Besides the conventional contact mine type described above, German mine types included “Katie” mines which rested on flexible tripods that would bend out of the way when they came in contact with sweeping gear. And “Oyster” mines, used in shallow water that would detonate when a ship passed over initiated by the pressure wave of the ship passing over it. There were still magnetic mines in use but they had fallen into disfavor by this time in the war because the Allies “degaussed” their metal ships, or IOW used a process which minimized the magnetism of the metal in the hull once the vessel was constructed. However the threat of magnetic mine is one reason why most minesweepers during WW II were wooden hulled vessels.

The mines could be laid by multiple types of vessels, including submarines, and the Oyster mines could also be deployed by aircraft. In fact, it was the Oyster mines, dropped by German bombers flying over the waters off the invasion beaches by night after the assault, which ended up taking the heaviest toll of Allied shipping. And the oyster mines could be set to only detonate after being passed over a few times.

The minesweepers were almost all Royal Navy or the commonwealth nations. Over 300 minesweepers were assigned to the task of clearing 10 channels, two per invasion beach through the German mine field out near mid channel and then to the clear the waters nearer shore right under the enemy guns. Of those minesweepers only 32 were US Navy. In the Pacific the island hopping campaign continued and the w0rk up to the invasion of the Philippines staring in October was in motion. It was like pulling teeth to get Admiral Ernest King, obviously more oriented towards the Pacific theater by then, to deploy assets for Neptune. Not only Minesweepers, but necessary vessels like the tugs needed to tow and position the parts of the Mulberry artificial harbors, were in short supply. Only the terrible losses to German E-boats during the Exercise Tiger dress rehearsal had convinced King that a squadron of PT boats should be provided to Neptune for protection of the mine sweepers as they carried out their dangerous task in the dark of the pre-invasion night.

The minesweepers started leaving their ports and heading out into the still stormy channel on the afternoon of June 5th. They began sweeping at 8 PM when it was still light out. The worked in flotillas of 6 minesweepers formed in echelon. Four hours out and four hours back. They were protected by USN PT boats and RN Harbor Defense motor launches, and accompanied by smaller craft tasked with dropping Red and Green Dan buoys to mark the mine swept channels. All of the vessels had wood hulls and thus were far less detectable by radar than metal hulled vessels would have been.

Once the 10 channels were cleared they moved in to sweep the waters closer to the shores of the invasion beaches where the transports would anchor and bombarding and escorting ships for the fleet would maneuver. They were literally working under the nose of the German shore batteries in the dark.

To maintain secrecy they did not detonate the mines but cut them loose to be floated out of the invasion area by the tide and currents. Finishing off the mines would come later detonating them by rifle fire.

After more than 16 hours straight of this vital and dangerous work almost all carried out in darkness, they had finished. It was minutes before the dawn of D-day. Three of the minesweepers had been lost doing this dangerous work. More would follow. But the threat of the German mines, while not eliminated, was minimized to the maximum extent possible.

Their work would go on. Constantly sweeping off the invasion shores and detonating floating mines. They were magnificent!

Well, It will be a month and a half before I can get an updated MRI for less than $3K, uninsured. Another month after that I could get the MRI read and get another recommendation to be put back onto opioid medications after 4.5 years of freedom provided all traces of medical cannabis are out of my system.

I will have about a month back on the pills before peristalsis kicks in so badly that my liver and pancreas won’t be able to do their job and both will become inflamed. Again. Heckuva price just to gain a few days per week of productivity. It certainly isn’t going to help me get a “square” job.

Nobody wants to hire someone with an active opioid prescription for chronic pain anymore than they want to hire someone with a medical cannabis recommendation made for any medical malady. Rock meet hard place.

The thing about sacrifice is that something living must die. In the Old Testament, animals would be slaughtered and offered to God in worship. The worshiper understood sin had a price and blood was the currency of remittance. The worshiper also knew the blood of bulls and goats was counterfeit currency, acceptable only in the abstract until the real thing, the priceless sacrificial blood of God’s Messiah, was available.   

The picture of God’s forgiveness and fellowship being restored from the ravages of sin by applying blood has not changed. The difference now is that you live in the era after the Savior has come. You have fellowship with God without sacrificing animals because the price of sin has been paid by the blood of Jesus Christ. 

In the New Testament, Paul makes the point that sacrifice has not been completely done away with! Today, you worship God as a living sacrifice! He clarifies that followers of Christ are to submit their very act of living, body, mind, and soul, as worship to God.  

Human philosophy divides the world into secular and divine but God, as supreme Creator of all things, sits enthroned over everything, making it possible for you to dedicate your entire day, work, thoughts, and feelings, in worship to Him. Ask Him to show you any areas of life you have not yet offered Him. Dedicate yourself to fully living in sacrificial worship to God.

Pray for unsaved public officials in America to come to the knowledge of God and accept the Savior, and that believers in governing positions would not separate their work and life but offer all to God in worship.
