One of the candidates, Armstrong is a VERY left leaning liberal. Crazy as it sounds, its looking like she is out spending all 5 of the other candidates combined. It seems that someone who has very deep pockets is funding her campaign with billboards, TV ads, clothing , signs and ??? Seems typical of liberals who is trying to take over our country.

There has never been effective oversight of the NSA’s bulk collections programs, or indeed, intelligence agencies in general. There’s been a lot of noise made about this vaunted oversight in defense of programs revealed by leaked documents, but this is nothing more than a talking point.

At The Big Picture, a clip of Sen. John D. Rockefeller (then Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence) discussing how oversight actually works has been posted. It’s from an interview given in 2007, about the time the FISA Amendments Act was being put together to replace the expiring Protect America Act. The amendments act, among other things, extended the length of warrantless surveillance and gave telecoms retroactive immunity for their participation in the NSA’s bulk collections.

Here’s Sen. John D. Rockefeller explaining why, even back in 2007, intelligence agency oversight was a joke.

DAVIS: Reports quote administration officials as saying this is going on and it’s being done in a way to avoid oversight of the Intelligence Committee. Is there any way—

ROCKEFELLER: They’ll go to any lengths to do that, as we’ve seen in the last two days [during hearings on FISA].

DAVIS: Is there anything you could do in your position as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee to find answers about this, if it is in fact going on?

ROCKEFELLER: Don’t you understand the way Intelligence works? Do you think that because I’m Chairman of the Intelligence Committee that I just say I want it, and they give it to me? They control it. All of it. ALL of it. ALL THE TIME. I only get – and my committee only gets – what they WANT to give me.

Retired Magistrate here: We live in a really messed up country and we are all wondering what we can do. Most of us are looking at something really big that somebody, we don’t know who exactly, can do.

But there is something that each one of us can do; ready for it? Little acts of kindness. I know, you are sitting there thinking well, this woman is nuts. No, not really. Start with your own family and circle of close friends. Do something nice for them; it doesn’t have to be something big, just something thoughtful that lets them know you love them and are thinking about them.

Then, go outside your immediate circle of friends and family. Smile at strangers. If a person needs help in the grocery store (reaching a product) and if you can help, do it. Look for ways to be a light in this dark world. No, I am not naive, this will not change this country overnight, but it is a start and something everyone can do no matter your age or health.

There are so many angry, hurting, lonely people all around us so take off your blinders and see what you can do to help others. Have a Blessed Day.

[T]he history of this case illustrates the disruption we have experienced over the last three years in how our laws are made and our freedoms observed.

Since March 2020, we may have experienced the greatest intrusions on civil liberties in the peacetime history of this country. Executive officials across the country issued emergency decrees on a breathtaking scale. Governors and local leaders imposed lockdown orders forcing people to remain in their homes.

They shuttered businesses and schools public and private. They closed churches even as they allowed casinos and other favored businesses to carry on. They threatened violators not just with civil penalties but with criminal sanctions too.

They surveilled church parking lots, recorded license plates, and issued notices warning that attendance at even outdoor services satisfying all state social-distancing and hygiene requirements could amount to criminal conduct. They divided cities and neighborhoods into color-coded zones, forced individuals to fight for their freedoms in court on emergency timetables, and then changed their color-coded schemes when defeat in court seemed imminent.

Federal executive officials entered the act too. Not just with emergency immigration decrees. They deployed a public-health agency to regulate landlord-tenant relations nationwide.They used a workplace-safety agency to issue a vaccination mandate for most working Americans.

They threatened to fire noncompliant employees, and warned that service members who refused to vaccinate might face dishonorable discharge and confinement. Along the way, it seems federal officials may have pressured social-media companies to suppress information about pandemic policies with which they disagreed.

While executive officials issued new emergency decrees at a furious pace, state legislatures and Congress—the bodies normally responsible for adopting our laws—too often fell silent. Courts bound to protect our liberties addressed a few—but hardly all—of the intrusions upon them. In some cases, like this one, courts even allowed themselves to be used to perpetuate emergency public-health decrees for collateral purposes, itself a form of emergency-lawmaking-by-litigation.

Doubtless, many lessons can be learned from this chapter in our history, and hopefully serious efforts will be made to study it. One lesson might be this: Fear and the desire for safety are powerful forces. They can lead to a clamor for action—almost any action—as long as someone does something to address a perceived threat. 

A leader or an expert who claims he can fix everything, if only we do exactly as he says, can prove an irresistible force. We do not need to confront a bayonet, we need only a nudge, before we willingly abandon the nicety of requiring laws to be adopted by our legislative representatives and accept rule by decree. Along the way, we will accede to the loss of many cherished civil liberties—the right to worship freely, to debate public policy without censorship, to gather with friends and family, or simply to leave our homes. 
We may even cheer on those who ask us to disregard our normal lawmaking processes and forfeit our personal freedoms. Of course, this is no new story. Even the ancients warned that democracies can degenerate toward autocracy in the face of fear.

But maybe we have learned another lesson too. The concentration of power in the hands of so few may be efficient and sometimes popular. But it does not tend toward sound government. However wise one person or his advisors may be, that is no substitute for the wisdom of the whole of the American people that can be tapped in the legislative process.

Decisions produced by those who indulge no criticism are rarely as good as those produced after robust and uncensored debate. Decisions announced on the fly are rarely as wise as those that come after careful deliberation. Decisions made by a few often yield unintended consequences that may be avoided when more are consulted. Autocracies have always suffered these defects. Maybe, hopefully, we have relearned these lessons too.

In the 1970s, Congress studied the use of emergency decrees. It observed that they can allow executive authorities to tap into extraordinary powers. Congress also observed that emergency decrees have a habit of long outliving the crises that generate them; some federal emergency proclamations, Congress noted, had remained in effect for years or decades after the emergency in question had passed.

At the same time, Congress recognized that quick unilateral executive action is sometimes necessary and permitted in our constitutional order. In an effort to balance these considerations and ensure a more normal operation of our laws and a firmer protection of our liberties, Congress adopted a number of new guardrails in the National Emergencies Act.

Despite that law, the number of declared emergencies has only grown in the ensuing years. And it is hard not to wonder whether, after nearly a half-century and in light of our Nation’s recent experience, another look is warranted. It is hard not to wonder, too, whether state legislatures might profitably reexamine the proper scope of emergency executive powers at the state level. 

At the very least, one can hope that the Judiciary will not soon again allow itself to be part of the problem by permitting litigants to manipulate our docket to perpetuate a decree designed for one emergency to address another. Make no mistake—decisive executive action is sometimes necessary and appropriate. But if emergency decrees promise to solve some problems, they threaten to generate others. And rule by indefinite emergency edict risks leaving all of us with a shell of a democracy and civil liberties just as hollow.

DeSantis super PAC tackles tricky task of organizing support for him in Iowa without the candidate

The 75-year-old retired speech pathologist had driven an hour to hear the Florida governor speak in northwest Iowa last Saturday. She was one of more than 600 Iowa Republicans who filed into the exhibit hall and past the display’s brochures about DeSantis and cards to sign pledging support for him in next year’s Republican presidential caucuses. The display, with all the earmarks of a presidential campaign, was the work of Never Back Down, a super political action committee promoting DeSantis while he moves toward a 2024 bid.
It was also an early glimpse of how this group — able to receive unlimited sums from wealthy donors, unlike a presidential campaign — plans to build a network of supporters necessary to compete in the caucuses. Essentially, it’s a caucus campaign that, for legal reasons, cannot attach itself explicitly to a candidate. The novel approach, aimed at maximizing super PAC dollars, underscores the stakes in Iowa for DeSantis. He needs to show early that he is a viable threat to former President Donald Trump, whose team says it has already signed up thousands of Iowa volunteers and supporters before DeSantis has even declared his candidacy.

The effort comes with thorny challenges. The super PAC must essentially build a separate grassroots network to finagle commitments from Iowans to support DeSantis without coordinating with him.
About 240 miles southeast of the fundraiser DeSantis headlined in Republican-heavy Sioux County, the real work of Never Back Down was well under way.

In an office in Des Moines’ western suburbs, Republican operatives had by mid-May conducted three five-day training sessions for classes of paid organizers, with three more scheduled for June. By early May, the group had hired more than a half-dozen seasoned political strategists and recruited volunteers from veteran statewide organizers, including former senior aides to Gov. Kim Reynolds and former Gov. Terry Branstad. As of early May, the teams had canvassed at least 1,000 addresses, and planned to double that by Sunday. The goal is to secure commitments to back DeSantis at the caucuses, which are expected to lead off the 2024 Republican voting season, in all of the 1,670 precincts where the party plans to hold them next year.

The Maricopa signature match Kari Lake trial judge sounded like he had a gun pointed to his head (sorry for the violent analogy but it fits as far as what he is now tasked to do) at the end of trial after listening to the defense’s gaudy closing arguments yesterday. They were off point to the task at hand and instead spewed out garbage talking points for MSNBC to attack him with if he ruled for a recall election: ‘not one fraudulent ballot alleged’, ‘does anyone really believe tens of thousands of ballots were comandeered?’, ‘the reason why people believe elections are crooked is because of people claiming elections are crooked’.

None of those statements are even close to what the AZ Supreme Court tasked the lower court with determining : whether of not Maricopa County did not follow the statute on ‘comparing signatures’ on enough ballots that it could have effected the outcome.

The defense’s closing statements went so far as to attempt to discredit the signature verification keystroke log data when the judge explicitly overruled an objection to that data and told defense they needed to present evidence data was illegit earlier in the trial and they ultimately failed to do so.

Defense also failed to assert or present evidence that the 300k signature verifications performed in under 3 seconds and 70k verifications in under 2 seconds were indeed lawful in order to counter the plaintiff’s expert testimony to the contrary.

So the judge knew instantly after closing he is now stuck between reluctantly ordering a recall election or concocting some ill formed mental gymnastics out of the trash that the defense left him with.

I don’t check in with Sarah as much as I used to – she posts at Instapundit in a late night stand, and I used to read her from there, but I gave up on Glenn and the gang – but here she writes about the alienation that those of us with hard freedom principles experience when we watch the Left encroaching from all directions and walk, or run, away from our dream spots because we watch them slowly being eaten alive, and feel an increasing demand to pledge allegiance to the false flag – self exile, walking away from people and places and scenes that we worked hard in earlier life to make happen for us, took risks and chances, ate sardines and crackers when we could while we cultivated friendships that we hoped would never die.

Sarah is an Elder, and she has re-created her dream and community at her site, very much akin to CTH here. I make a conscious effort now to remember to check in with her regularly, to see what’s up, and to connect with kindred souls not afraid to take a principled stand.

This article touched me deeply, as I am coming full circle from a 10 year self imposed exile from a community of musicians in the Pacific Northwest that was broken and destroyed from the inside, and surrounded on the outside with the insanity of Seattle, Portland, and the entire West Coast. I am rebuilding that community carefully now back home in Florida, fighting bugs and cockroaches agin, but finding kindred musical souls in the new neighborhood that, together, will let me recapture the gift and dream and freedom of touching people’s hearts thru music.
