I dunno. You should ask some people in treatment, AJ. Every junkie I have spoken with who used heroin before oxy became a household name swears by that assertion. Heroin is scary to civilians. A little pill from the “doctor”, the medicine cabinet or a friend or family member’s clammy palm seems much more benign..
It’s the blood-filled syringe that makes the heroin habit seem so much worse.
In a way it is, because you can’t unintentionally develop that bad habit, you can’t not know what you are doing.
You have to be going for the high and nothing else, with full knowledge ahead of the fact of what it can and almost certainly will do to you.
I’ve known plenty of people who have used or even are using those little pills and are functional and productive members of society.
I can see it from the junkie’s point of view, because there are some people who are prone to addiction, and they may not know that when they take that pill that they see other people taking and stopping with no apparent ill effects.
I knew people who used snorted heroin a few times and were never hooked. That drug is not very user friendly to newbies, when snorted or smoked for the first time it usually makes users so sick it scares the fool out of them and they never touch it again.
Prior to the Oxycodone Tsunami, usually junkies started out with a combination of tobacco and alcohol in junior high. Then comes the marijuana, mushrooms and LSD. Next up in high school was typically exposure to cocaine , MDMA (tablets in the 90’s were occasionally pressed with a heroin cut) and Methamphetamine. Once those rubicons have been crossed the natural progression was onto the Horse.
Usually that took years. The flood of pills from ’98 to 2011 put out over a billion tablets into the hands of people who would have never had a taste otherwise. When the pills went away the only thing left was heroin(now fentanyl) for millions of who were righteously medically dependent and millions more who fell into the trap for funsies.

I don’t know of any denomination that hasn’t felt the brunt of the Apostasy. The UMC is gone, in my book… but Protestants don’t feel themselves part of a massive org. The Church is local. Period. So pretty different from Catholic + the large Orthodox ministries were local goers feel some connection to members in different cities + countries + what someone high up here or there says means more that it would among Methodists…

The most I can say in way of formed conclusions is — like I wrote – it seems to me – the average goer to a Catholic Church has a far, far broader outlook in terms of connecting to the Church as a whole + Catholics in whatever other region… Whether the view is positive or negative – Catholics feel a connection to the Roman Catholic Church as an organization far more than the Protestant denominations I’m familiar with.
The United Methodists might be a large denomination with an large organization on paper —- the Average Methodist doesn’t think much at all above his local church + preacher + goers he knows from there….. The focus is also on the Bible + the people in it —– so no focus on Saints beyond its pages or deep sense of Church History beyond the history of Christianity itself….
—- and of course ——– at least in my time — most Church Goers around me in my hometown had hardly ever read much in the Bible to begin with….. They were satisfied with the understanding they got 1 day a week at the Sunday Sermon…..

This is a key statement. Just like the foundation of the US Constitution to the greatest country every created, the Catholic Church is based on a foundation that likes us to God. Many of the off shoot religions are a product of this foundation and were a direct result of abuses within the Catholic church by “humans in power”. Same goes with what is happening with the US today. The abusers are the ones that must be called out and held accountable or the foundations will be destroyed. I will not abandon my faith in this country or my Catholic faith. I will hold those accountable if I can.

Tucker Carlson gave his Heritage speech from the perspective of an Episcopalian, and he said “it’s the samaritans of religion” (? I think he called it)… implying it’s not a very strongly Faith-fortified – or Faith-fortifying – religion. I thought his approach to speaking Truth was/is very fortifying nonetheless… as is yours. I think Michael Matt’s approach is the same – Speak the Truth & fear no man (which is refreshing coming from that direction). Truth wins because God wins. I had to learn that from an entirely different direction.
I also appreciate your considerate & considerable empathy. I think the “victim” label is detrimental – that doesn’t ever seem to get lifted away, it seems like a pigeon-hole; like “once an alcoholic, always one, and once a cesarian, always a cesarean just=*chronic* victimhood, and chronic victimhood is as debilitating as unresolved/chronic grief… look at what the “woke”= *chronic victimhood* class is accomplishing everywhere right now.
“Survivor” is less so by being slightly more positive, yet still falls short of connecting one to the inner potential/empowerment for the degrees of healing that Humans are capable of (Jesus demonstrated that) if only one were to demand it courageously from The Almighty in one’s life experience; as in full freedom from disempowerment/disconnection. I believe, God gives us what we’re Righteously entitled to when we become willing to claim it powerfully from Him.
IMO – just IMO -Begging God for what’s Righteously ours demonstrates weakness & doubt in owning His Gifts & Promises; correctly exhorting Devine delivery of His Righteous Gifts with confidence from a position of authentic repentance & Gratitude shows clarity & alignment that is richly rewarded (in my experience- maybe only in my experience).
That is what kills the vipers in the Garden (killed them in my Garden)… their coerced & manipulated spell of disconnection in God’s children from alignment with Him & His Laws His Word is undone/broken… their defeat is complete as they no longer hold sway, they become powerless/neutralized… when we come back into alignment. Not gonna lie it took me some getting to.
I have powerfully claimed in anger what’s Righteously mine before… and it came almost immediately, and in an unmistakable yet significantly uncomfortable delivery – I learned that repentance first, then Gratitude for the Gift exhorted – because I fully Trust & appreciate that it’s already mine – induces a much more Gracious delivery of what’s already mine yet unmanifested. It’s so good to be clear.
I’ve read a lot of perspectives on personal experiences and the language is all over the place. “Snake Bit by vipers in the Garden, which killed the vipers” comes to my mind in this moment for me. Restored is probably my Occam’s Razor language; I’m Restored… God helps those who help themselves played out for me & I was shown exceptional healing tools & approaches to empower myself & self-empowers others… which includes a kind of bonus- wisdom-education for perceiving lies & Truth & possibilities with an appreciable degree of clarity; and yes some conundrums=’creativity enhancements’/adaptations for my benefit as well (I think you referenced ‘weakeness’ I perceive a bit differently).
I didn’t find that flip-the-script language or instruction at all in victims/survivors’ or in ‘counseling’ language, it’s my personal perspective for me from my own work very far afield from “accepted” channels. I had an awful lot of manure/compost to get out from under and to displace effectively, and I needed the Spiritual Earth Movers I was shown the way to, located very far outside the box & off the beaten path. I really had to take the scenic route to get back into alignment.
Thank God we never have to make any of our journeys alone, especially when the path is deliberately & effectively obscured.
This is why it’s clear to & appreciated by me how much fortitude it takes for one to overcome the imposed spells on a child of God (of any age and especially from their beginnings/early in their life) who is Restored to do good/God’s work of any description in the world subsequently.

You missed a few talking points, I could probably threw out a few more. Catholic haters are good that that. I can not denied that the Catholic church has it problems, but to say 20+ generations of my family are wrong is an insult to me. For example, the mass grave stuff is one example that is way off base. As for the sex abuse stuff, it is not just in the Catholic church, it is in our schools and everyday life. We are humans and when power is involved, there is going to be problems. Michael Matt is great at pointing out the faults of the church but he does it to make the church stronger and better, not to take it down that the valueless people have been doing since the beginning of time. “The Church” does not represent those who are of the faith. The truly faithful do not condone or excuse the The Church for their actions and fight every day to keep it strong. Remember some people use their religion for power where others use it for guidence (ie: Biden/Pelosi). Don’t confuse the two.

Why would the church apologize for something that never happened, and why would governments apologize as well??? LOL Gas lighting? Ha. You really miss the point of foundation. If you are Christian you can’t ignore the Catholic Church. If you believe in the US you can’t ignore the Constitution. Those in power are the ones that abuse it in both cases. The measuring stick you use to attack the Catholic Church is not the same stick used to measure the rest of humanity. My faith and my families faith is what has protected me from much of what you have experienced. As for the Magdalene Laundries, I do not deny they existed. The picture painted does not reflect all the players involved. Just as the J6th political prisoners denying individual freedoms stream from a corrupt political system, so did The Magdalene Laundries. What is a problem, like in the Canada false claim about the Catholic school, the truth is distorted to attack the faithful.
Until you dig deeper in to the stories, you will never understand that it is not faith but evil that is attack that faith. The flaws you want to point out are meant to distract and weaken, not right the wrong. As with the abuse in the Catholic Church, nothing is pure and that evil is everywhere including those funny uncle Joe’s to high school teachers, to step fathers, to cheating spouses, to drug users….. Lay blame as you may, but I disagree where you place it. In many cases, the lack of faith is what brought many of the pains in life including the murder of my friend’s sister or the suicide of my best friend. The shame of sexual abuse effects us all and has impacted my life in ways you would never understand. Blaming the faith instead of the evil is where the the argument is flawed. Not facing the reality that evil is everywhere, you will never find peace if you don’t know how to protect your self and others. That faith is my guide. Like a good solider who practices for self preservation, I do the same everyday with my faith. It is evil that prevents many to see that faith. We come by it in many ways. What works for you, might not work for me, but if you do not find that faith, you will be lost to the evils of this world and possible the next. I have taken a leap against all odds. I practice it everyday. I learned from my parents. It is faith that they passed to me and it includes the Catholic Church as a tool to fighting evil.
It’s by Divine Grace if you weren’t affected by the institutional/instutionalized brutality & inhumanity of the church as a baby/child/young person/mentally fragile individual. Germany couldn’t fight its way out of a duffle bag with what it’s got, and it is supposedly Europe’s leading economic power. The sad truth is that it will stop being any kind of power without the cheap Russian natural gas it was running on, and later this year Germany will be in a panic to try and restore its horribly damaged trade relations with Russia to get that natgas.
Since NATO’s essential mission is to oppose Russia on everything, that will be the end of NATO. Europe will return to what it has always been: a region of squabbling national interests. Let’s hope Europe does not become again the slaughterhouse it was in the last century.
